Front Cover Artists
Loren Entz presents a unique picture of the
West. Whereas many Western artists focus
on the more adventurous aspects of the
historical West and modern ranch life, Loren paints the quieter, more domestic side
of rural life. His paintings often depict the
simple moments that make up the fabric of everyday life – mothers with
their children, a father holding an infant at the end of the hard day’s work.
Fred Fellows was able
to realize his ambition to become a full
time artists but not
without challenges.
Early on he traded his
paintings for groceries and doctor bills.
By the late 60’s he had
established a sound regional reputation and was breaking into
the mainstream market in places like Scottsdale, Arizona.

Benny Reynolds
His first rodeo was in Butte, Montana at age 6 – he rode one calf and was
bucked off the other. Reynolds came by his rodeo interest and ability naturally.
Both his mother and father rode saddle broncs and his brothers rodeoed.
Reynolds was about 15 when he seriously began entering rodeo. He remembers that first year well. “I got thrown off everything I got on.” Improvement came with practice on his father’s team of work horses, using them for
both bareback and saddle bronc stock.
That practice paid off when Reynolds joined the pros in 1956 and went
on to win the 1958 Rookie of the Year honors competing in saddle bronc,
bareback, bull riding and steer wrestling. Reynolds never expresses a preference for one event. “Whichever one I’m winning the most money at is my
favorite.” His best year was 1961 when he won the Association All Around
title, $31,309, a saddle, a silver buckle, silver spurs and a life size fiberglass
horse. He went on to win the 1966 Linderman Award given to the contestant
earning the most money in a combination of three or more rough stock and
timed events.
“I just like to rodeo. There are several things I guess...the people, the
excitement, the challenge.”
Sonny Linger
Sonny Linger has spent nearly his entire life in rodeo, from his days as a contestant in the 1940s to his four decades of effort at the Wrangler National Finals
Rodeo as the chute boss and then the livestock superintendent. His great ability
with animals will be his legacy. His peers credit him with knowing and handling
roughstock better and easier than anyone in rodeo. From 1949-66, Linger served
as chute boss and arena director for Beutler Brothers Rodeo. The first to realize the
potential of the great Beutler Brothers saddle bronc Descent, Linger kept meticulous
records on the six-time PRCA horse of the year. Linger was chosen as chute boss
for the first National Finals Rodeo in 1959 (a position he held until 1968) following
the NFR from Dallas to Los Angeles to Oklahoma City. In 1971 Linger began his
own stock contracting company, producing rodeos in Montana, Wyoming and North
Dakota, as well as providing stock for the National Western Rodeo in Denver, Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up and RodeoHouston. In 1985 he was selected as livestock
superintendent for the NFR in Las Vegas. Although Linger would describe himself
as just a cowboy, rodeo will remember him for his great ability with the four-legged
contestants who count for 50 percent of the score.

Garrison Family
Bill Rumney Family
Since 1883 the Garrison Family has been part of Montana, for over 100 years, 4 generations have
ranched on the 17,000 acre property and soon a 5th generation will inherent this legacy. When it
comes to PRCA Rodeo, Tod, Tim and Jim, all have participated in the MPRF. Tod qualified for the
NFR in SW, Tim is a former NIRA Nat. Champ and Circuit Champ in SW. Jim was a NRA SW Champ.
Since 1966 Bill (late) & Lorraine Rumney have built one the premier cattle ranches in Montana on their 14,000 acre
ranch (with leases, 30,000 acres). Through responsible grazing, pasture rotation & shrewd knowledge for genetic
traits which translated into uniformity for their herd, this has garnered them statewide & national acclaim for the
quality of their cattle. 3 generations of Rumneys have competed in amateur & professional rodeo with great success.
Melaney Family
Small Family
Ranching over 50 years & with 3 generations on the ranch, they’ve been involved in rodeo through high school and
college rodeo. Chuck served as director, secretary & president of the Montana High School Rodeo Association. Susie won the Montana High School All Around in 1958 & the NIRA All Around in 1961. Children & grandchildren
of this great family have qualified for junior high, high school, collegiate, Montana Circuit Finals & the NFR.
Edwards Family
Clifford is a third generation Montanan. Grandfather Edwards came to the great Judith Basin of central
Montana in the early 1890’s. His grandfather Cunningham came shortly after the turn of the century to
that same area. Edwards cattle have grazed the Judith Basin for over 100 years. The Edward’s family business interest include banking and aviation, but Clifford’s passion was being a Montana born trial lawyer.
Ivan and Pauline Small married in 1947 & raised their family in a ranching & rodeo tradition. The family raised cattle & horses relocating between the Crow & Northern Cheyenne Reservations & finally settling near the head of Rotton Grass Creek (Big Horn Mtns).
All 5 of their children & several grandchildren continue to raise cattle & horses. For the Small family the love of rodeo has produced
multiple PRCA members, NHSRA qualifiers, many INFR qualifiers, & 3 INFR World Champions; Courtney, Walker & Ivan Small.
Alfred Adolph Family
One of the great cowboy families, patriarch Alfred, in late 50’s & early 60’s was very active in helping local cowboys rodeo. He served as a mentor, pickup man, helped with roping, hazed for steer wrestling, broke horses for cow cutting. He
took his son Darrel to the High School National Finals in ‘65, ‘67 & ‘68. Alfred was also a key member of the great M89
Centennial Cattle Drive. He’s raised quarter horses & paint horses & still hears from owners all over the U.S. & Alaska.

Miles City Saddlery
Original Coggshall Saddles

bought the Miles City Saddlery in 1989 and have continued to make saddles and custom leather work under the
original Miles City Saddlery stamp. They sell western boots, hats, clothing, tack and novelties. Now retired from
farming and ranching, they primarily focus on operating the Miles City Saddlery.

Great Montana Western Bands
The Band, first know as Cooper and the Crowd
Thinner started in March of 1987 with just two
guys, Ted Nees and Don Cooper, at Bill Mankin’s
Saloon in Fromberg, Montana. They had both
been playing music for years but had been on
a sabbatical for a while. They got
together and at the suggestion of
Diane Nees, of being called Cooper
and the “Crowd Pleaser”, a sarcastic
“friend” changed it to “Crowd
Thinner”. After performing under
that name for a couple of years, Ted
Nees moved to Butte and Cooper
hired more musicians that became
the “Crowd Thinners” and it has been
that way ever since. Twenty seven and a half years
as a Traditional Country Music Dance Band where,
most of the time, Cooper and the Crowd Thinners
had as much fun, maybe more, than the dancers.
The Ringling Five was started in the 1980’s by a
group of guys who liked to sing and poke fun at
others and themselves. Most of the guys grew up
on ranches in the Shields Valley around people who
helped form the character of the group. You add a
0XOFECZ,SBNFS3PEFP$P
quick witted base player from a ranch in Valier,
a music teacher that could play any instrument
and grew up on a farm in Opheim, a dance
band leader with a love of writing music and
playing the rhythm guitar to a bunch of other
ranch raised boys who try to sing and you get a band
that has produced seven CDs and a video. Most
of the songs are original work about the trials and
tribulation of ranch work in the west.

And Many More!
Signed Artist proof print from the original oil painting by
western artist Loren Entz, CAA
Loren Entz presents a unique picture of the West. Whereas many
Western artists focus on the more adventurous aspects of the historical West and modern ranch life, Loren paints the quieter, more
domestic side of rural life. His paintings often depict the simple
moments that make up the fabric of everyday life mothers with their
children, a father holding an infant at the end of the hard day’s work.
“Life In the Fast Lane”
Signed Artist proof print from the original oil painting by
western artist Fred Fellows, CAA
Fred was able to realize his ambition to become a full time artists
but not without challenges. Early on he traded his paintings for
groceries and doctor bills. By the late 60’s he had established a
sound regional reputation and was breaking into the mainstream
market in places like Scottsdale, Arizona.
