Applicants must be under the age of 21, unmarried and a descendant of a veteran with at least ninety days active service in the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard, who received an Honorable Discharge for such service. A photocopy of the veteran’s DD214, discharge or separation notice must accompany the scholarship application. Any additional scholarship requirements are on individual scholarship applications. Lillie Lois Ford Scholarship Fund - Two awards of $1,000 each are given each year. One award is given to a boy who has attended a full session of The American Legion Boys State of Missouri or a full session of the Department’s Cadet Patrol Academy. The second award is given to a girl who has attended a full session of The American Legion Auxiliary’s Girls State program or a full session of the Department’s Cadet Patrol Academy. M.D. “Jack” Murphy Memorial Nurses Training Fund - Currently one $750 award is given for two successive semesters, and may, by application, be extended for two additional successive semesters. This award is available to a Missouri boy or girl training to be a Registered Nurse, and may be used in their freshman or subsequent college years. The student must have graduated in the top forty percent of their high school class or have a “C” or equivalent standing from their last college or university semester. Scholarships are awarded for one year, payable $375 per semester. Joseph J. Frank Scholarship – Five awards of $500.00 are given annually to individuals who are descendants of a veteran. Applicant must have attended a full session of The American Legion Boys State or The American legion Auxiliary Girls State program. Applicants must be unmarried, under the age of 21, a current resident of the state of Missouri and must use the scholarship as a full time student in an accredited college or university. Charles L. Bacon Memorial Scholarship – Two awards of $500.00 are given annually in memory of the first Missourian to serve as National Commander of The American Legion. Eligible are individuals who are currently members of The American legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, or The Sons of The American Legion, or a descendant* of a member of any thereof. Applicants must be unmarried, a resident of Missouri, under the age of 21, and must use the scholarship as a full-time student in an accredited college or university. Erman W. Taylor Memorial Scholarship – Two $500.00 awards are given annually to a student planning on obtaining a degree in education, in honor of this Past National Executive Committeeman from Missouri. To be eligible, individuals must: (1) be a descendant* of a veteran who served 90 or more days of active duty in the armed forces and having an honorable discharge; (2) be a Missouri resident; (3) use the award as a full-time student at an accredited college or university; (4) provide a copy of the discharge certificate for the veteran on whose the application is made; and (5) submit an essay of 500 words or less on the subject: “In your opinion, what was the most significant world event of 2013/2014?” 2|Page Updated 02-03-2015 American Legion Scholarships continued: Shane Dean Voyles Memorial Scholarship – One $500 award will be awarded, annually. We are primarily an educational club with a focus on helping members learn the best practices in the field of beekeeping. We are excited to announce a scholarship opportunity for any student who is interested in learning more about beekeeping. We will be awarding the following to 2 interested students, age 15 to 18, in the southwest Missouri area: A complete hive set up A hive of bees A hive tool kit A book, First Lessons in Beekeeping A mentor from the club This is the perfect opportunity for anyone with a science, nature, or agriculture interest to gain hands-on experience in beekeeping. The applicant would be required to do the following: Write a 500 word essay explaining the applicant’s interest in beekeeping and how this scholarship would help his or her future goals. A short biography should be submitted with the essay, to include name, parents’ names, address, phone number, email address, and other hobbies, activities, and interests Depending on the number of applicants, he or she may need to appear before a selection committee. The applicant will need to attend at least 3 of the 4 beginning bee classes that will be held at Nixa Hardware each Friday evening in March. These classes are free. The applicant will ensure that the location they plan on keeping the bees does not have any codes or ordinances prohibiting bees or beekeeping. 4|Page Updated 02-03-2015 Bees Alive Continued: If the applicant is awarded the scholarship, he or she must be willing to: Attend the April, 2015 monthly meeting to accept the scholarship and regularly attend club meetings thereafter. Sign a waiver acknowledging the risks of beekeeping. Work with a mentor from the club, which involves contacting him or her with questions and progress checks monthly. Give a presentation to the club after a couple of months to update members on how the bees are progressing. The awardee should understand that the bee equipment is theirs to keep, but if the awardee does not follow through on maintaining contact with the mentor or making his or her presentation, they will forfeit the bees. The Bees Alive Club wants to encourage younger people to take up this exciting and rewarding hobby that can lead to a profitable career. Focus, Inc. is a social and philanthropic organization of gay and lesbian professionals in southwest Missouri. Founded in 2002 The FOCUS Foundation Scholarship Grant has been awarded to over 30 students across SWMO. Annually, between $3500 and $5000 is awarded. To date, the scholarship grant committee has given nearly $43,000. This year The FOCUS Foundation will again award scholarship grants that can total between $500 and $2000 to individuals who represent the ideals of the foundation. The grant will be paid to the post-secondary institution where the recipient is currently enrolled. It will be applied towards tuition, fees, supplies, or university housing expenses. The grant is valid for only the year it is awarded. The grant cannot be used for a student’s previous bill at the post-secondary institution.
