Our research has focused on biointerface engineering by using functionalized poly-pxylylene coatings on biomaterials. These coatings can be prepared in a solventless
process by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) polymerization and can be seamlessly
applied to a wide range of different substrate materials. These advanced coatings can
improve the interfacial biocompatibility of biomaterial surfaces or can be compatible with
complex biological features as they represent a designable interlayer; stable under the
conditions of the biological environments. Many key features of exploiting the reactive
coatings for biological applications have been demonstrated during the past few years in
precisely controlled biomolecules including saccharide, DNA, proteins, and drugs, as
well as the demonstrations on manipulated cell behaviors. Efforts have also been focused
on using these advanced polymer systems for the engineering of chemically and
topographically defined surface nano-/micro-structures.
