Archbishop Wenski describes the purpose and fruits of the ABCD this way: "The Archdiocese of Miami, through the Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD), opens the door for us all to unite as one community of believers to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ and bring hope to those in need. United, we feed the hungry, cloth the poor, care for the sick and dying, and touch the hearts of those in despair. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we nourish and educate our children, both spiritually and intellectually. We assist the poorest of our parishes and schools so that all persons may encounter Jesus Christ. We provide shelter for the homeless. As Catholics, we consistently defend and respect the dignity of all human life, work to eliminate prejudice, and promote social justice. We journey together by sharing in the sacraments—from baptism to receiving the Eucharist, to confirmation and penance, to marriage and anointing the sick. And this year, we are blessed with sixty-five men studying in our seminaries answering their call to the priesthood to become shepherds of Christ here in south Florida. You make all this possible." The theme of the 2015 ABCD is "One in Faith, One in Hope, One in Charity". This is how your donation to the 2015 ABCD will be used: One in Faith: Education and Evangelization - 21% One in Hope: Formation of Seminarians, Clergy, Religious and Laity - 34% One in Charity: Social Ministries and Assisting Parishes in Poor Communities - 45% Thanks to your generosity, Saint Andrew Parish met and slightly exceeded its 2014 ABCD goal of $250,275. This year our goal for the 2015 ABCD is the same as last year, $250,275.00 I am most grateful to all those who include the ABCD in their annual stewardship commitment to the Church. It is my hope this year to increase the number of parishioners who participate in this worthy cause. Provided that your personal/family finances allow it, please consider donating the same amount or a slightly more to this year's ABCD. If you have not donated in the past, I encourage you to consider a first-time donation of at least $250. Envelopes and pledge cards are available for you to make a donation or a pledge. Pledges can be paid in full or on a monthly basis, whatever better suits your personal budget. Because I know of your gratitude to the Lord for the many gifts you have recieved from Him, I am confident that we can reach this year's ABCD goal. I hope all our parishioners will join me in prayerfully considering and generously giving to the 2015 ABCD so that we can be "One in Faith, One in Hope, One in Charity". On behalf of those who benefit from your generosity, I express my thanks. May the Lord continue to bless you and your families with His love! Monseñor Michael A. RESPECT LIFE CORNER CARDINAL O’MALLEY WELCOMES HOUSE PASSAGE OF ‘NO TAXPAYER FUNDING FOR ABORTION ACT’ January 23, 2015 WASHINGTON—Cardinal Seán O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston and chairman of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities, welcomed passage of the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2015” (H.R. 7) by the U.S. House of Representatives. “By passing this legislation, the House has taken a decisive step toward respect for unborn human life, reflecting the will of the American people,” he said. Co-sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dan Lipinski (D -IL), the pro-life bill passed with bipartisan support by a vote of 242-179 on January 22, the day of the annual March for Life in Washington. The House approved identical legislation a year ago by a closer margin, 227-188. The bill codifies a permanent, government-wide policy against taxpayer subsidies for abortion and abortion coverage. It also requires health plans offered under the Affordable Care Act to disclose the extent of their coverage for abortion and the amount of any surcharge for that coverage to consumers. Cardinal O’Malley wrote to Congress last January urging support for the legislation, saying it “will write into permanent law a policy on which there has been strong popular and congressional agreement for over 37 years: The federal government should not use its funding power to support and promote elective abortion, and should not force taxpayers to subsidize this violence. Even public officials who take a ‘pro-choice’ stand, and courts that have insisted on a constitutional ‘right’ to abortion, have agreed that the government has every right (in the Supreme Court’s words) to ‘encourage childbirth over abortion.’” “H.R. 7 also requires health plans under the Affordable Care Act to provide full disclosure on their abortion coverage to consumers,” said Cardinal O’Malley. “This lets Americans choose health coverage that reflects their values. Just as most Americans do not want their tax dollars used for abortion, they do not want their own health coverage misused to pay for abortions. I hope the U.S. Senate will take up this important legislation soon.” Respect Life (954) 977-7769 Project Rachel 1-888-456-4673 “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you” (Jeremiah 1:5) A Stewardship Minute Reflecting on God’s Word Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de Dios Prophets tend not to be very popular. They get thrown in jail, ridiculed, beaten up, or killed. The leaders of Jerusalem once had Jeremiah thrown in a cistern, where he would have died if someone had not interceded for him with the king. Today we hear how the people of Nazareth would have killed Jesus if he had not given them the slip. In both cases, people did not want a message that God was sending them through the prophets. Jeremiah had to tell the leaders that their time had run out because of their infidelity to the covenant. God was leaving them to their own devices, allowing Jerusalem to be destroyed by the Babylonians. Jesus confronts his own townspeople by admonishing them that they should be like that woman whom Elijah helped and that leper Elisha sent to wash in the Jordan. Both of these Gentiles had faith they should imitate. But the villagers only wanted a God who would wreak vengeance on the Gentiles, a God who only worked wonders for them and who was confined within the boundaries of Israel. Sometimes we may want to keep God in a little box of our own making, limiting God to the boundaries of the church building or maybe even just the tabernacle. That way we go and visit God when we have time or need something, but we hope that God will not bother us too much with any burdensome demands. The God of Israel was never satisfied with confinement, even in something the size of the temple. And Jesus would not allow himself to be constricted in his own day concerning whom he associated or ate with or even touched. Tight quarters wouldn’t do, not then but especially once he was raised from the tomb! — James A. Wallace, C.SS.R. — James A. Wallace, C.SS.R. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, ―What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!ǁ Jesus rebuked him and said, ―Quiet! Come out of him!ǁ The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed and asked one another, ―What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.ǁ His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee. Brief commentary: We are now well into Ordinary Time, the liturgical season that invites us to enter into the Gospel story and become a part of it by allowing it to inform and shape our lives as Christians today. It calls us to follow Jesus Christ throughout his ministry by actively living out his Gospel message in everyday concrete ways. Today‘s readings emphasize the prophetic aspect of Jesus‘ ministry. The Old Testament reading from Deuteronomy anticipates a ―prophet like Moses from the among the people,ǁ whom God ―will raise up to speak his words to them.ǁ The psalm similarly emphasizes the people‘s call to listen to the voice of God that comes to them through a variety of ways, most especially from prophetic witness. Paul‘s advice to the Corinthians to ―adhere to the Lord without distractionǁ is a call to a wholehearted commitment to the cause of the Gospel, which is to be lived in area of our lives. In the gospel we meet ―the One who is not only a prophet, who speaks ‗in the name of‘ the Lord, but is God himself who comes to speak to us ‗in the person‘ of his Son, his Wordǁ (CCC). At Capernaum, by the Lake of Galilee, Jesus as a devout Jew enters the synagogue on the Sabbath day. His mission is characterized by an authoritative teaching that amazes the people. Rather than commentaries on the Scriptures, his ‗new‘ teaching is one in which he speaks on his own authority as he boldly reinterprets the Scriptures afresh and surpasses customary biblical reflection. In conjunction with his stunning words, Jesus‘ authoritative deeds affirm his message. Central to Jesus‘ mission is the liberation of the oppressed and of healing. Together with his teaching, Jesus of Nazareth confronts the oppressive powers: these recognize him as ―the Holy One of Godǁ who puts an end to their grip on the people. Jesus rebukes, silences, and commands them: they are powerless before the only true power. As a result of his astonishing teaching and works of deliverance, Jesus‘ fame spreads throughout the region. As Christians, we are both believers and followers: this means that we have put ourselves in the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ totally, and that we are willing to follow him in all things, for he is the Way. Therefore, like Jesus, the Church today teaches ‗with authority‘ the Gospel to the world in a way that it meaningful, coherent and which addresses the issues and challenges, the hopes and dreams, of our world. Similarly, Christians today must expose, rebuke, and drive out the demons that plaque our lives, societies and world: violence and war, prejudice and racism, materialism and narcissism, oppression and poverty, and so many forms of evil that daily and oftentimes subtly affect our thinking and attitudes, relationships and choices, values and way of life. Because he has given us his Spirit, we too can – if united to him – bring to the world the saving Gospel and help liberate our world from the demons that bound and threaten our very existence. Discipleship essentially involves both believing in Jesus Christ and the living of the Christian mission to the world. Today’s reading offers significant messages: • The readings of Ordinary Time call us to weekly to learn from the ministry of Jesus, and put to practice his mission today. • Jesus‘ ministry is characterized both by words and deeds. Similarly, the Church and her members today must be both prophetic and active. • Jesus mission revealed to people the truth that sets us free, and his actions liberated the afflicted and oppressed from their bondage. For our shared or personal reflection: After a brief pause for silent reflection share your answers, ideas or feelings. • How can I come to better learn the teaching of Jesus Christ, so that I can share it with others? • How do my actions toward others reflect the ministry of Jesus? • As a member of the Church, how do I expose, rebuke and silence evil in my life and society, and how do I help bring about the liberation of the oppressed in our world? ¿Has venido a acabar con nosotros? Today, the Magisterium of the Catholic Church continues to teach. The Holy Father’s speeches, and papal encyclicals provide wisdom on pressing issues of our times. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) helps us to understand moral and political issues by examining proposed legislation through the lens of Scripture and Catholic social teaching. USCCB advocacy alerts explain how proposed legislation will impact people who are poor or vulnerable and provide talking points for speaking with legislators. Jesus calls each of us to act on His authority, as His hands and feet. We, like Moses, are called to live prophetic lives to build God’s Kingdom here on earth. And the Church equips us with resources to advocate for others. Do you receive advocacy alerts? It was much too frightening. Why couldn’t God send human teachers, prophets, instead? God agreed, but with a warning. The people had better listen to those teachers, because they spoke in God’s name. That arrangement, though, had its own problems, for them and for us. How do I know this teacher is truly from God? And if the teacher is from God, are all parts of the teaching meant for me? We have the Church and scripture to help us with those questions, but still there are always a few loose ends. That is the powerful significance of the sentence in today’s Gospel: “The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” The people knew that this Jesus was authentic—truly a teacher sent by God. They knew it by hearing him. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Era demasiado aterradora. — St. Augustine — San Agustín REMEMBER SAINT ANDREW PARISH IN YOUR ESTATE Why use Envelopes? The regular use of Sunday envelopes is so important!!! Whenever we do not have a record of contributions or when contributions have ceases, we have no way of knowing whether someone is still joining our community of worship or not. Unless we know someone is a practicing Catholic, delays and hard feelings can result when people want to be married, when they want their child baptized, or when they want to be a godparent or a sponsor. We go through this with people every day. It is the Church, not just this parish, which insists that signs of good faith commitment be present on these occasions. It is simple to establish and maintain a record of attendance at Mass and parish support—simply by using the envelopes that parish provides. This is also necessary in order to enroll your child in our religious education or sacramental preparation programs, and to obtain a favorable tuition rate at a Catholic school. You must be able to demonstrate that you are a practicing Catholic— that you are participating at Mass and contributing to the support of the Church. Filling out a registration form alone does not accomplish this, USING ENVELOPES ON SUNDAY DOES OR FAITH DIRECT. It also enables us to thank you and provide you with a record of your contributions for tax purposes. Thank you! Yo… Usted… Nosotros, somos uno I… You… We are One For centuries, the Catholic Church has performed more works of charity than any other organization in the world. Why? Because God is love, and through that powerful statement, He teaches us that it is in giving that we receive. His message is simple—to love God above all else and to love others. It is through His love that I seek your help. You are the answer to someone’s prayers, and together, we are changing lives. United, as one family of God, we feed the hungry, cloth the poor, care for the sick and dying, and touch the hearts of those in despair. You make all this possible. Let us unite through our support of this year’s ABCD so that I… you… and we can continue to carry out the good works of Jesus Christ here in South Florida.
