Group).
RMD Pain and Palliative
Care Trust is a registered nonprofitable organization which
provides pain relief and
palliative care to terminally ill
patients and their families
through medical care and
counselling.
The organization provides
both outpatient and inpatient
service and also extends home
care for patients who cannot
be taken to the trust. Family
support and counselling are
also given.
Dr. Republica, a general
practitioner, was drawn to the
field 8 years ago. She has a
post-graduate degree in
Palliative Care from Flinders
University.
The Trust also runs hospice
service centers in Porur and
Madurai, where patients are
provided food, shelter and endof-life care. Community-based
palliative care is also undertaken, where a team of doctor
and nurses treat patients in
their homes.
The Trust, which has so far
helped over 5,000 patients, is
run on donations from
philanthropists and corporate
companies.

Actor Raghavan passes away

While 1950s chased the fast approaching next decade1960s, G. Ramanathan, movie music maestro, was in his best
form since he had begun composing songs several years earlier.
In 1956 he scored music for a hit movie ‘Naan Petra Selvam’
which was directed by K. Somu, an experienced Tamil filmmaker
with a good track record. Earlier he had worked as Assistant
Director under the American Tamil filmmaker, Ellis R.Dungan.
Produced by A. M. Ismail for Pioneer Productions, it was
written by the leading film personality of Tamil cinema, A. P.
Nagarajan, who wrote stories and dialogues for many movies,
directed quite a many and also acted in more than many!

sleep in a hospital in T. Nagar
on Jan. 24. He was 89 and is
survived by his sons
Srinivasan and Krishna, and a
grandson.

Vacant TNHB complex being
misused
It was a family melodrama heavy on sentiments and Shivaji
Ganesan rose to great heights as usual, and his performance
as the hero was well supported by the multilingual stars
actress G. Varalaskhmi. With a family theme, the movie lent
itself to songs and there were more than nine of them. One
particular song, ‘Naan petra selvam, nalamaana selvam’
became a super hit, sung off-screen by T. M. Soundararajan
who considered it as one of his best. Composed in the classical
raga, Jonpuri, not surprisingly, the song became a big hit. The
lyrics were by Ka. Mu. Sheriff, one of the leading lyricists of
Tamil Cinema.

Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer sang the song at high speed
known in Classical Carnatic Music as ‘rendaam kaalam’ which
is faster than the ‘mudhal kaalam’, which is slow-paced.
According to tradition, there are only three kaalams depending
on the speed. A legendary musician of the past centuries
Shatkaala Govinda Maarar was believed to have sung in six
kaalams! Hence the prefix to his name! Sadly there were no
recordings in that era of his singing. How human bodies can
perform at such high speed without becoming incoherent is
difficult to imagine by us mere poor mortals!
Other movies of 1957 for which music was composed by
Ramanathan include ‘Aaravalli’, ‘Manamagan Thevai’,
‘Chakravarthi Thirumagal’, ‘Rani Lalithangi’, ‘Puthumai
Pitthan’, ‘Vanangaamudi’, ‘Puthu Vazhvu’, ‘Sarangadhara’,
‘Kaathavarayan’, ‘Uthama Puthiran’ and ‘Veera Pandya
Kattabomman’, an excellent collection of movies in a single
year. Many songs in them became hits.
‘Aaravalli’, made in 1957, has already been discussed in the
earlier chapter in full. Many of the comedy songs in the movie
became popular and are heard by people to this day.
The next film of 1957 for Ramanathan was ‘Ambikapathi’,
a remake of the 1937 super hit movie of M. K. Thyagaraja
Bhagavathar, a folk myth tale about a Chola King, his
daughter Amaravathi, her love for the poet Ambikapathi,
the son of the legendary poet Kamban who wrote the Tamil
version of Ramayana.

who perhaps sang the most number of songs off the screen in
the history of Tamil Cinema.

Sivakami is survived
by 4 sons Sankaranarayanan, Krishnamoorthy, Sundaram and

Mambalam for more
than 25 years. As per
her wishes her eyes
were donated to Rajan
Eye Care.
Sir, - I wish to bring to your notice the
smoking menace in West Mambalam particularly in tea stalls which one has to go to
frequently. No smoking sign is painted but
people smoke right under it and not outside.
Tea stall owners are not at all bothered.
Central and State governments have made
laws to prevent smoking in public places but
to no avail. Enforcing authorities do not take
any concrete action. Even Chennai Corporation harps on the slogan “Smoke-free Chennai”
but without any results.
Inspections by health officials and fining of
tea stall owners is not evident.
The only option is to ban the selling of
cigarettes and tobacco products near tea stalls.
