We’re getting closer to April 15: Tax Filing Day. And while there may not be much you can do to change your results for the 2014 tax year, you can certainly look closely at your tax returns to find areas you might be able to improve next year — and one such area is your investment portfolio. Of course, you may also find opportunities in other places, too. Could you have taken more deductions? Could you have moved some of your debts into a tax-deductible loan, such as a home equity loan or line of credit? You’ll want to consult with your tax advisor to determine areas of potential savings. However, you may be able to brighten your tax picture by making some “tax-smart” investment moves, such as the following: • Resist the urge to trade frequently. It can be costly to constantly buy and sell investments. In addition to the commissions you may incur, and the possibility that such excessive trading can impede a consistent investment strategy, you could rack up a sizable tax bill. If you sell an asset that you’ve held for a year or less, any profit you earn is considered a short-term capital gain, which is taxed at the same rate as your ordinary income. So, for example, if you bought Investment ABC for $1,000 on January 5, 2014, and you sold it for $1,250 on Dec. 31, 2014, you’d be taxed on your $250 gain. If you are in the 28% tax bracket, you’d owe $70 in taxes. But if you had waited until January 6, 2015, and you sold your investment for the same $250 gain, you’d pay the more favorable long-term capital gains tax rate of 15%, which translates into $37.50 in taxes — just over half of what you’d owe at the short-term rate. If you habitually sold investments after owning them less than a year, the taxes could really add up —so try to be a “buy-and-hold” investor. • Increase your 401(k) contributions. If you aren’t already participating in your 401(k) or similar plan, start now. And if you are contributing, boost your contributions whenever your salary goes up. You typically put “pretax” dollars in your 401(k), so the more you add, the lower your annual taxable income. Plus, your earnings can grow tax deferred. • “Max out” on your IRA. Depending on your income level, you may be able to deduct some, or all, of your contributions to your traditional IRA — and these deductible contributions can lower your taxable income. Plus, your investment can grow tax deferred. (Keep in mind, though, that taxes will be due upon withdrawal, and any withdrawals made before you reach 59½ are subject to a 10% IRS penalty.) If you contribute to a Roth IRA, your contributions are never deductible and won’t lower your taxable income, but your earnings are distributed tax free, provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you are older than 59½. In 2015, you can contribute $5,500 to your IRA, plus an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution if you are 50 or older— and it’s almost always a good idea to “max out” your contributions each year. By following a buyand-hold investment strategy and using those tax-advantaged accounts available to you, you may be able to help yourself — at tax time and beyond. All were required Information Session on Computer Training by Audrey Tolle Several computer training programs will be offered at the library in the near future, beginning with an introductory session that will give participants the opportunity to tell us what they most want to learn. On Tuesday, February 10th at 5:30, professional computer trainer Robert Beauchamp will provide an overview of the importance of technology skills and will survey those in attendance to determine their needs. Beauchamp is the owner of Computer Assistance for Beginners. He has a degree in Electronic Engineering Technology as well as many years of experience as installer/ project supervisor of security systems for corporations in Texas and Oklahoma, and has acted as trainer in the use of those systems. Robert specializes in offering basic skills to those who are retired but want to keep active both physically and mentally. His classes are especially designed for a pace that allows the novice to ask questions and avoids ‘tech speak,’ using terminology that makes sense to a generation that didn’t grow up with computers. This series of computer programs will be open to all adults who need basic computer instruction, however, regardless of age. The classes Robert offers include Introduction to Computers, Introduction to the Internet, Internet Security, Microsoft Word and Excel, and Introduction to iPhone and iPad. He also customizes classes according to the needs of an organization. Whether you have a specific need or would just like to know what is available, it will definitely be worth your while to join us on February 10th ! Herbs in Texas at Sanger Public Library BY Lynne S. Smiland North Texas is a great place to grow herbs, those flavorful plants used to season foods or make medicinal preparations. Grown for centuries by gardeners, herbs add fragrance and beauty to a garden. Because many like full sunlight, our Texas summers generally are no obstacle to growing most varieties. On Tuesday, February 10th at 10:30 a.m., the Sanger Public Library will host a presentation on “Herbs in Texas.” Two Denton County Master Gardeners, Coral Gates and Chris Orosco, will teach us about growing and using some of these delightful plants. Coral has been a lifelong gardener, and says she always plants herbs like cilantro, basil, oregano, thyme, parsley, mints, and flowers such as sunflowers roses, daffodils, and lily of the valley. Chris is especially interested in native and adaptive plants and water-wise gardening, which is suitable for herbs because many prefer dry growing conditions. She is also an orchid grower and member of the North Texas Orchid Society. Coral and Chris will discuss which plants grow most easily here and which require a bit of effort, sun and water needs, and things to do with your herbs after you grow them. Stop by and see him soon! I-35 Keep your browsing secret Q. I’m getting really tired of ad companies tracking what I do online so they can send me more annoying ads. What can I do to get rid of them? A. Every major Web browser - Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera - has private, or incognito, browsing. Turning this on means your browser will ignore cookies, including ad-tracking cookies, and won’t record your browsing history. It’s almost like you weren’t online. To fire up private browsing, just hit CTRL+SHIFT+P (CTRL+OPTION+P on Macs). This works in every browser except Chrome. In Chrome, the shortcut is CTRL+SHIFT+N (OPTION+SHIFT+N on Macs). You can also enable private browsing mode from your browser’s main menu. When your browser is in private browsing mode, it will show a special icon. If you don’t see a purple mask in Firefox, the spy in Chrome or the “InPrivate” in IE, then you aren’t secure. Is this email a scam? Q. I recently received an email that might be too good to be true. How can I tell if an email is a scam? What are the telltale signs? A. There are five major warning signs you will want to look for in a fake email. Visit www.komando.com for more details. You will first want to look for misspellings, grammar mistakes and any phrases that don’t make sense. These are the first clues. Also, take a look at the formatting. Is the spacing a mess? How about in-body links? If the email is security-related, keep in mind that no company talking about a security problem would include a link or attachment in an email. Instead, you’ll get written instructions on where to go. You’ll also want to take a look at the “from” line to make sure the address is a real address. For example, if the email is coming from Amazon, it should end in amazon. com, not Gmail or another email service. Stop telemarketers and robocalls Q. My phone won’t stop ringing with robocalls and telemarketers. How do I get them to stop? A. Sign up for the Do Not Call registry. Joining Do Not Call is actually very simple. You go to the site and enter the landline or cellphone number you want on the list. A quick email verification and you’re done. You can also call 1-888382-1222 from any phone you want on the list. That’s all it takes. The Do Not Call list keeps you off of for-profit business call lists, but it isn’t immediate. Telemarketers update their lists periodically, so the FTC says it can take up to 31 days to take full effect. Also, political organizations, charities and survey takers are still permitted to call you. For those calls, try an app like PrivacyStar. Increase storage space on your iPhone and iPad Q. I recently tried to take a photo on my iPhone and got an alert that there isn’t enough space on the phone to store the photo. What do I need to do to make room and free up space? A. While there’s no limit to what you can do with your Apple gadget, there IS a limit to the amount of stuff you can store on your gadget. Photos and videos will take up the most room. Go through and delete any duplicate files, or transfer them to your home computer or an external drive using iTunes, iPhoto and other programs like Dropbox or Picasa. Then, after you backed up your photos, you’ll want to kill the Photo Stream completely. Go to Settings >> Photos & Camera >> My Photo Stream and hit delete. Next, look at your phone and tell me how many of those apps you really use on a regular basis. I’m pretty sure there’s one or two you can live without. If you can’t decide what apps to clear out, I’ve got a trick that can help you decide. Go to Settings >> General >> Usage. Here you’ll see a list of apps that take up the most storage. This helps you make an informed decision about where to go fat-trimming. A new and better way to send email Q. I do a lot of volunteer work between two different organizations. I manage the email lists and was using Outlook Express, which won’t work for me anymore. What’s the best email service to switch to? A. You could manage all your lists in Gmail, but I have a better option to make things super simple and easy. Check out a mailing list manager like MailChimp. It lets you send up to 12,000 emails for free every month. It’s chock-full of beautiful templates that will help make your messages pop. Even better, with a dedicated list manager you won’t have to manually update your email lists. When someone unsubscribes, the service will take care of removing them from your lists. You also can see stats and open rates, too. The other option is to set up a Facebook group for each organization. You can invite people to join the group, send out events, post meeting times, invite people to share photos, get added to the mailing lists and so on. ® Come See CARL SPINDLE at 940.321.7404 N O W O P E N [email protected] billutterford.com 1404 N STEMMONS FWY • SANGER (JUST BEFORE YOU GET TO MIGUELITO’S) 4 3 day money back guarantee 4 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty on every vehicle we sell 4 We report to the credit bureau to help rebuild your credit 4 Free Car Fax on every vehicle we sell 4 Members-only parts and service pricing 4 Three convienent service centers, Bob Utter Ford, Sherman, Blake Utter Ford, Denison and Bill Utter Ford, Denton 4 FREE LOANER CARS 4 First oil change free 4 Free tank of fuel with every purchase 940.321.7404 1404 N STEMMONS FWY SANGER, TEXAS 76266 (JUST BEFORE YOU GET TO MIGUELITO’S) 4 Thursday, February 5, 2015 v Sanger News v www.lemonspublications.com Sanger Weekly Police Report The Sanger Police Department responded to the following calls for service during the period of January 1-11. The way I like to say it is – I know that you don’t know, but you don’t know that you don’t know. You can’t know everything, but you can know people that do. The best remedy for conceit is to sit down and make a list of all the things you don’t know but should know. • Do good. Be a nice person and polite to everyone. Help people who need help. Try not to be judgmental. • Be kind. The Golden Rule applies here – Treat others the way you want to be treated. Smile and ignore anyone who wants to be mean to you. As a professional photographer, Julie took a lot of pride in her work, and brought samples everywhere she went in hopes of getting new business. One evening she was at a dinner party, and her host asked to see her portfolio. She showed him over a dozen pictures, and the host was impressed. “These are some really nice shots,” he told her. “You must have a great camera.” Julie was annoyed at the suggestion that it was her camera – not her talent – that allowed her to take great pictures. She had 318 kills, 612 assists, 58 blocks and 67 aces her senior year. During her career, she was also named Second Team All-Area by the Denton Record Chronicle and Second Team All-District. While juggling high school tennis and track during the spring, Kearney’s club background includes time with Conquerors Volleyball Club and Get It Right Sports. “Erin is an accomplished multi-sport athlete that has a high ceiling for volleyball,” Georgetown volleyball head coach Nick Griffin said. “Her athleticism, versatility and overall skill set is an ideal fit for our program. She is a five-tool player that can impact the game in multiple ways.” Kearney is the daughter of Brad and Melissa Kearney and plans to major in business management or marketing. She is pictured with her brother Aidan. The Tigers volleyball team was 31-12 overall last year and 12-2 in conference. His two top players Jesse Sheridan finished with 29 points on Tuesday and teammate Vivian Gray led all scorers with 30. Sanger (18-12, 5-3) was the aggressor early as it connected on four 3-pointers for a 16-9 lead late in the first quarter. The Lady Indians still led by two in the second quarter when Argyle put together a 15-2 run to end the half. Gray and Sheridan had 18 and 17 points, respectively, by halftime. Sanger, which got 16 points from Carissa Spiker and had three players reach double figures, did not score another point until there was 4:41 left in the third quarter. That allowed the Lady Eagles to rip off a 14-2 run to start the frame. Gray had 10 of her team’s points during that surge. Argyle outscored Sanger 41-21 in the second half and Argyle closed the game with a 12-6 run. “That’s a great team and they shot lights out early and didn’t want me to get to 1,000 wins,” Townsend said. “We finally woke up and realized we were playing a physical team. “I’m glad this one is behind me. Now we can focus on 1,001.” Argyle sits in first place in District at 7-1. Celina is in second place at 6-2 and Sanger owns third place at 5-3. Gainesville is 4-4, Krum 2-6 and Aubrey 0-8.
