From Fr. Mi ke . . .
Dear Parishioners,
The winter weather sure is with us now so please be
careful as you move around. Check on people who live alone
in your neighborhood and give extra time for every trip. I
know at St James you have been noticing that we are locking
many of the interior doors. It is out of safety for everyone. I
know it will be a little time as we all get used to having these
doors locked but there are many situations that we are doing
our best to avoid, not least of all is having someone surprised
by another person already lounging in the closet when we
open the door. In our diocese we have had thefts and when
Pennington Police told us that they were keeping an eye on us
I decided that we should take precautions ourselves, too, and
not be careless with our security. Above all, we must do everything to protect the children in our pre-school and in our Rel
Ed programs so please be patient as we make sure that all are
safe.
Mass in parishioners backyards, affectionately dubbed by Joe
Logan as "Mass on the Grass", will continue this summer. If you
would like to have Mass celebrated in your backyard please
give a call to Diane at 609-737-0122, or at [email protected], to arrange a date. Last year we celebrated Mass
throughout Hopewell Twp and surrounds so I have set aside
many dates throughout the weeks of summer and hope that
we can have Mass on all of the nights that are available.
We have established the schedule for celebrating the Sacrament of Penance during Lent in both churches, when you get it
please consider celebrating the Sacrament as early in the season as you can. Last year there was a big jump in numbers the
last couple of days and people had to wait a long time. There
are many opportunities and the priest is there waiting for
someone to come. It would be great for all of us if we could
spread the crowd throughout the season.
The second Season of ARISE will begin in Lent. Now is the
time to sign up for it. This weekend you can sign up at both
churches and if you decide late please call the Religious Educa-

As we completed our monthly theme of Social Justice, we spent the evening talking about being falsely accused.
The youth started the night playing Mafia. We then watched a
video about bullying from the perspective of the bullied. The
youth then discussed how Jesus was falsely accused and how
they may find this happening in their everyday lives. Great job

On the Feast of St. Blasé (February 3) the Catholic Church
celebrates a special blessing of the throat. St.
Blasé of Sebaste lived in the 4th century. He
devoted his early years to the study of philosophy and went on to practice medicine before
becoming Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia (now
part of Turkey). Legend has it that St. Blasé
once cured a child who was choking on a fishbone. And so, on his feast day (or on the nearest weekend) we
are invited to come forward after Mass to have our throats
blessed. When you come up, a Priest or Deacon will hold two
crossed candles around your throat while saying: “Through the
intercession of Saint Blasé, bishop and martyr, may God deliver
you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit.”
This year in our Parishes we will celebrate the Blessing of
Throats after all Masses on the weekend before the Feast of St
Blasé (on January 31 and February 1).
Next Week: Sending Forth
The St. James Hope Ministry thanks all who stopped to talk
with us last weekend during our annual Awareness Weekend.
Many parishioners took home a card describing the New Jersey
Good Samaritan Law, whereby if an individual feels the need to
call the police or an ambulance to assist someone who is in serious medical difficulty because of excess alcohol or an overdose
of narcotics, they can do so with the knowledge there will be no
legal repercussions even if the caller is also under the influence
of alcohol or drugs. More of these cards are available on the
Hope display in the Gathering Area. Please take and share them.
In our raising awareness of this law more lives may be saved.

St. James Nursery School — “Nurturing the Whole Child”
Now Enrolling for Fall 2015
Prior to Christmas, as our small school community celebrated the birth of Jesus, it was beautiful to see our parents with their children. What a wonderful gift God has given us in family life – a gift where the dignity of the person is
cherished because they are made in His image and thus precious. As we completed the Church and
calendar year with the Feast of the Holy Family and anticipate all that 2015 has to promise, it
seems appropriate to reflect on the words of St. John Paul II who emphasized that the family “has
the mission to Guard, Reveal, and Communicate love.”
The St. James Nursery School hopes that the New Year brings our entire parish family a year filled
with joy and peace. Consider joining us – now enrolling for Fall 2015.

This week’s WORD
AU THORITY
Last week, Mark’s Gospel reminded us that it is Jesus who
chooses us to continue his work of building the Kingdom of
God. Today’s Gospel clarifies for us Jesus’ amazing authority over
all of creation. Even the “unclean” spirits recognize Jesus as God
and obey him!
Through our Baptism, we come to know Jesus and as we grow in
our faith we are more able to understand how to be Jesus to the
world. This is our privilege and challenge. We cannot make the
excuse that we don’t know enough about our faith to be an example of a faithful Catholic; it is our duty to educate ourselves
on who we are and what we stand for.
A good way to share faith and get to know Jesus better is
through small group faith sharing. You’d be amazed at how these
settings help you to see the presence of Christ in your life. If you
haven’t yet joined an ARISE Lenten small group we encourage
you to do so and give yourself a gift this spring!

RCIA – Small Faith Sharing Groups
Really? I thought the RCIA process was a
bunch of classes to teach you all you needed
to know about the Catholic Church!
Actually, the RCIA model is the foundation
for all faith formation, which includes faith
sharing. The process begins with questions –
not from us, but from those wanting to
know what Catholics are all about. This involves prayer and discussion highlighting
Scripture, service, and the strong sense of
community that is so important to Catholics. The next step involves examining your lifestyle to see how it can be more Christcentered. Once this becomes rooted, a “commissioning” occurs
through several beautiful and meaningful rites, culminating in the
celebration of the sacraments of initiation. The last, and most important, step is the commitment to live a life centered on building the Kingdom of God, in other words, to be and bring Jesus to
the world.
Does this sound like what you are seeking? If you are interested
in becoming catholic or joining the RCIA Team, we invite you to
contact Nancy Lucash at 609-737-2717 or

scription drug abuse and heroin addiction.
An accidental overdose claims a life every
nine minutes in our country. Here in
New Jersey, there were 557 heroin related
deaths in 2013. It touched old and young, rich
and poor, educated and not, all races, and all religions. We, in Mercer County, can consider ourselves fortunate that we have not
been hit as hard as other counties in the state – at least not
yet.The DEA has stated, “Education and prevention are the key
ingredients in fighting this deadly addiction.”
There are a number of excellent websites that can help you learn
more about this epidemic and how you can talk with your children about the danger of prescription drugs and heroin. One site
in particular is very informative. It is –
www.getsmartaboutdrugs.com. A second site,
knowaddiction.nj.gov, also has valuable information. Another excellent resource in our area is City of Angels and their website is
–cityofangelsnj.org.
Knowledge is a gift, but it takes work to acquire it. At the end of
the day, your knowledge may save a life and that life may be of
someone you love very much.
As always, please feel free to call on us in confidence, and as always, remember that God hears our prayers and is with us on
this, our journey of life.
