Sunday crash

hospital, one
to jail
A loud ‘boom’ rang
out through downtown Palacios last
Sun. (Jan. 25), but
it wasn’t shots of
fireworks that were
fired.
Instead, the Sunday
silence was broken at approximately
1 p.m. by a crash that sent two passengers to the hospital and one driver to jail. The incident occured at the
intersection of Sixth St. and Lucas
Ave. A red Chrysler Sedan driven
by Palacios resident, Jonathan Lopez, was travelling east on Lucas
Ave. when he ran the stop sign and
collided with a white Chevrolet S-10
pickup, driven by Palaicos resident
Dage White, that was heading north
on Sixth St. The impact spun the
pickup a near complete 360-degrees
with the red sedan coming to a rest
two feet up the trunk of a pecan tree.
An eldery female passenger in the
white pickup was knocked unconcious by the impact and was transported by ambulance to the Palacios
Community Medical Center. A male
passenger in the sedan suffered minor injuries. Lopez was arrested and
transported to the Palacios Police
Dept. (Beacon Photo by Ryan West)

PEDC, City look to
strengthen partnership
BY BRANDI G. WEST
The Palacios Economic
Development Corporation
(PEDC) met for the first
time in 2015 this past week
and moving forward will
seek opportunities to become
more transparent and bring
about public awareness of the
progress and happenings of
the PEDC.
The PEDC, with City
Manager David Kocurek
present, scheduled a workshop
with the Palacios City Council
to strengthen this partnership.
Ultimately this close
partnership will increase the
likelihood of each achieving
their mission.
The PEDC’s function,
according to its’ website, “Is
to administer the expenditure
of sales taxes for community
and economic development
programs in the City of
Palacios.”
Other opportunities to
engage and bring awareness to
the mission of the PEDC were
discussed, possibly speaking
at a Chamber Luncheon,
future Chamber Banquets,
community events along with
other possibilities.
Director’s Report
Matagorda County
and Palacios Economic
Development Executive
Director Mike Strotheide
presented the PEDC with the
monthly Director’s Report, as
always, in code.
The following projects, in
an effort to protect the rights
and maintain the trust of
potential investors, are named

City sales tax slump continues in new year
BY ALYSSA WILSON GARCIA
Palacios Beacon
Palacios remains on a
decline, according to the State
Comptroller’s Office, the city
saw a 35.42-percent decrease
in January sales tax monthly
revenue, compared to the same
month of the previous year.
The city sales tax is collected
by businesses and merchants
along with the state sales tax.
Both are submitted monthly to
the State Comptroller’s Office
which then rebates the local tax
back to the entity in which it
was collected.
The sales tax on December
sales received earlier this
month totaled $36,078. That
was $19,793 or 35.42-percent
less than the $55, 871 received
for December 2013 sales.
H o w e v e r, s t a t e w i d e ,
according to State Comptroller
Glenn Hegar, cities, counties,
transit systems and special
purpose taxing districts
will receive local sales tax
allocations totaling $618
million this January, up 7.7
percent compared to January
2014.
One month left to apply for SBA Disaster Loans
Tanya N. Garfield, Director
of the U. S. Small Business
Administration’s (SBA) Disaster Field Operations Center - West, reminded Texas
small, nonfarm businesses in
Aransas, Calhoun, Jackson,
Matagorda, Refugio and Victoria counties of the February 25, deadline to apply for
an SBA federal disaster loan
for economic injury. These
low-interest loans are to offset economic losses because
of reduced revenues caused
by the drought in Calhoun
County that began on April,
29, 2014.
According to Garfield,
small nonfarm businesses,
small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture and
most private nonprofit organizations of any size may
apply for Economic Injury
Disaster Loans (EIDLs) of
up to $2 million to help meet
working capital needs caused
by the disaster. “EIDLs may
be used to pay fixed debts,
payroll, accounts payable and
other bills that cannot be paid
because of the disaster’s impact,” said Garfield.
“SBA eligibility covers
both the economic impacts
on businesses dependent on
farmers and ranchers that
have suffered agricultural
production losses caused
by the disaster and businesses directly impacted by
the disaster. EIDL assistance
is available regardless of
whether the applicant suffered any property damage,”
Garfield added.
The interest rate is 4 percent for businesses and 2.625
percent for private nonprofit
organizations with terms up
to 30 years. Loan amounts
and terms are set by SBA and
are based on each applicant’s
financial condition.
Businesses primarily engaged in farming or ranching
are not eligible for SBA disaster assistance. Agricultural

Abbott, Patrick sworn in, Senate changes rules
BY RICHARD LEE
(Austin) Governor Greg
Abbott and Lt. Governor Dan
Patrick took office at a ceremony held on the Capitol
grounds Tuesday, marking
new leadership in the state
for the first time in more than
a decade. Patrick takes over
from David Dewhurst, who
has been Lt. Governor since
2003, and Abbott replaces
Rick Perry, whose 14 year
tenure is the longest in state
history. Abbott said in his inaugural address that he wants
to keep Texas the best state
for business in America. “I
will also ensure that we keep
Texas number one in the nation for job creation,” he said.
“We will promote policies
that limit the growth of government – not the size of your
dreams.”
Patrick was more specific
on his policy goals during his
inaugural address, saying that
he will deliver on his campaign promises. “In my campaign I pledged to secure the
border, to lower property and
business taxes, prioritize, reform and improve public education, build our infrastructure
and protect life, family, and
the Second Amendment,” he
said. “That’s what I pledged
to do as a candidate and that’s
what I will do as Lt. Governor.
My goal is to be the best Lt.
Governor in the history of the
state.” Patrick called for the
passage of a school choice
program, the highest level of
border security funding in the
state budget ever and a plan
to reduce both business and
property taxes this session.
Wednesday, the Senate
voted on new rules for the upcoming session and changed
a long standing tradition. For
many years, the Senate has
operated under the two-thirds
rule, which requires that twothirds, or 21 members, must
vote to bring up a bill before it can be considered by
the body. This session, that
threshold has been lowered
to three-fifths, or 19 members. This controversial issue
sparked considerable debate,
but Administration Chairman and Tyler Senator Kevin
Eltife defended the provision
as necessary to keep the Senate operating efficiently. “We
must work on the rules that
allow the Senate to govern in
regular session and complete
our work in a timely manner,” he said. Issues blocked
under the two-thirds rule, said
Eltife, just come back again in
special sessions when Senators have no option to set the

Senators also approved reducing the number of standing
committees from 18 to 14 and
limiting the number of congratulatory resolutions to ten

the state.

Synthetic Marijuana: A Dangerous Epidemic
suffer severe brain damage. (safe4emily.org)
There are many other cases just like Emily’s,
even stories from our own community. Community leaders are aware of this issue, and it was the focus of our Tri-County
Community Coalition meeting in November.
Lieutenant Clayton Ryman of Bay City Police Department said on this topic, “Synthetic
marijuana causes health risks for users, safety
concerns for law enforcement officers, and
increased numbers of emergency room visits. This situation is not specific to one geographical area but spans across the nation. As increased numbers of children and adults
choose to use these drugs, the risks substantially elevate for everyone involved.”
Parents, be sure to talk to your children
about the dangers of synthetic marijuana. Too
many lives are being ruined. Together, we can
work to eradicate this epidemic. For more
information, contact Tri-County Community
Coalition of the Bay Area Council on Drugs
and Alcohol (BACODA) at [email protected] or 800-510-3111.
BY Marian Bullard
Tri-County Community Coalition Coordinator
Synthetic marijuana is a growing epidemic
in our community, and it can no longer be ignored. It’s important to know that synthetic
marijuana - also known as fake weed, K2,
Spice, Kush, and other names - is not marijuana. It mimics some of the characteristics
of marijuana, but it is chemically made in a
lab. The effects of the chemicals are more like
ecstasy, methamphetamines, heroin and other
serious drugs. Retailers and websites advertise the drugs as “safe” and “legal,” but these
statements are false. The possible chemicals
in any given container of a synthetic are not
known and may differ each time the product
is purchased, even if it is the same product
name.
In my years of working in the prevention
field, I have seen the devastating effects of
synthetic marijuana firsthand. This drug can
destroy physical and mental health from the
very first use. Immediate effects of synthetic
marijuana may include vomiting, confusion, hallucinations,

Snacking your way to good health
BY Chinatu Gladrich Matagorda. Co.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agent
It’s a new year, and many people have
goals to make this one healthy! Snacks
are a big part of a healthy eating plan,
and if you choose wisely, snacks can
help you reach your health goals.
“Too often, people grab calorie-dense
snacks, such as chips or a cookie, because they are hungry between meals,”
says Texas A&M AgriLife Extension
agent Chinatu Gladrich. However, if
you plan ahead, you can have a variety
of healthy and nutritious snacks ready to
grab and go. Choosing healthy snacks
from the grains, fruit, vegetables, dairy,
and protein food groups can boost your
energy between meals and keep your
hunger in check so you don’t overeat
at meal time. In fact, you can think of
snacks as “mini-meals” and view them
as opportunities to eat more fruits, vegetables, and calcium-rich dairy foods,
which are often under-consumed by
Americans.
It’s no secret that many people are try-
ing to lose weight. Therefore, there are a
few tips you should follow when choosing to include snacks into your day. First,
most people do not need more than one
or two snacks per day. You should never
snack if you are not hungry, and always
avoid the urge to eat if you are bored,
stressed, worried, or angry. Next, if you
do choose to include snacks in your day,
keep snacks to less than 200 calories,
and be sure that you do not exceed the
total number of calories you need. To
help you control snack portions, measure out your foods, or choose foods
that are pre-portioned, such as yogurt
or canned fruit. Some stores even offer
snacks that are pre-packaged in 100-calorie portions.
Many foods make great snacks! Some
snacks may just be a single food, such
as an apple or popcorn, while others
maybe a combination of foods from several food groups, such as fat-free yogurt
with fresh berries. Whatever snack you
choose, be sure that you choose foods
low in solid fat, salt, and added sugar,
but high in nutrients and fiber. When

On January 19th, Jo Ann

India and Asia.
Members answered roll
call by indicating if they like
or dislike Indian food, and
with what Indian dishes or
spices they are familiar. Answers varied, but most were
familiar with curry and other
spices. Many members indicated they were not familiar with Indian food, or had
never had the opportunity to
try it. Some would be willing
to try Indian food if given the
opportunity.

planning your snacks, you’ll need to
consider whether you need access to a
refrigerator to safely store your snack
foods. Here are a few ideas for healthy
snacks:
Whole wheat crackers and low fat
cheese;
Fresh vegetables, such as cucumbers
and cherry tomatoes, with low-fat salad
dressing;
Fruits canned in their own juice, such
as pineapple or pears;
“Grab and Go” fresh fruits, such as
bananas, apples, and peaches;
Nuts, such as almonds or walnuts;
Granola bars;
Low-fat popcorn;
Peanut butter and celery sticks; and
Bell peppers and hummus.

ing and creative, and followed an adapted version of
“Would you like to be a millionaire?” based on questions
about India and Asia. Questions were asked of Marty
Rieck by Jo Ann Schneider,
with a ringing bell each time
Marty chose the correct response. Questions were frequently clarified or expanded by Miss Murphy, to the
amusement of Alapha members and the mock irritation
of the questioner, Jo Ann. At
the end of the question and
answer period, a large quantity of fake and overlarge money was presented to Marty for
her 100% correct answers to
all questions.
Additional facts regarding the area were added by
committee members For
example, religion there has
evolved over time. Primary
religion of 1500 BC was
Hindu, then in 600 BC it
was Buddhism, but by 1100
AD the primary faith was
Muslim. The Muslim faith in
India is the 3rd largest in the
world, but millions of young
Muslims have now left India
and are scattered throughout
the world.
In 1947 India gained its independence from the United
Kingdom. Their government now includes 29 states
served by three branches of
government.
The literacy rate is quite
low, with less than half the
citizens able to read and
write. India has the 3rd largest economy, after the United
States (1st) and China (2nd).
Their services are heavily involved in outsourcing, such
as call centers. Mathematics is a favored subject, with
a long history of over 2000
years.
The most popular sport in
India is cricket. Art is centered on ancient paintings
and sculptures. The poverty
rate hovers around 20%30%. Alapha’s next meeting
will be a social hosted by officers on February 2nd.

Tough times on
court continue
for Tigers
The tough times on the basketball court continued for
Tidehaven’s varsity Tigers
with a pair of district losses.
Early last week, the Tigers were bounced by Edna’s
Cowboys (no score reported).
Coach Shane Walker said
the “Tigers started off slow
and fell behind early but never gave up.”
The Tigers’ fight resulted
in 24 attempts from the free
throw line.
Last Friday, the Tigers
were toppled by Hallettsville’s Brahmas 56-24.
The Tiger cagers started
off slow and were unable to
mount a comeback against
the state ranked Brahmas.
No individual scoring was
reported for either game.
The Tigers were to host
Rice’s Raiders on Tues. (Jan.
27) before traveling to tangle
with the Palacios’ Sharks on
Fri. (Jan. 30)
JV Tigers
The junior varsity Tigers
were edged by Edna 36-16
early last week.
Coach Walker said the
team of JT Travis, Dylan Birchum, Chance Atkins, Rusty
Hackfield, Chase Fink, Keith
Buduas and Tristen Martines
played a “hard game.”
Last Friday, the JV Tigers
fell to Hallettsville 55-12.
No individual scoring was
reported.
Sharkettes
booted by
Stafford
In their lone action on
the pitch last week, the
varsity Sharkettes were
speared by Stafford’s
Lady Spartans 7-0.
Sharkette
Maria
Hurtado registered three
shots on goal and Bianca
Gonzalez had another.
The Sharkettes match
last Friday against La
Grange was cancelled.
Palacios was to visit
Rockport-Fulton
on
Tues. (Jan. 27) before
opening District play on
Fri. (Jan. 30) at 5 p.m. in
Sweeny.
Tigerettes bounced by
Edna, Hallettsville
Tidehaven’s Tigerettes were dealt a pair of losses on the
hardwood last week.
Early last week, the Tigerettes were corralled by Edna’s
Cowgirls 64-40.
The Tigerettes held a slim 8-7 lead after the first period, but
fell behind 28-15 at halftime and never recovered.
A trio of Tigerettes finished with a team high 11 points : Bri
Sanchez, Melanie Brewer and Brianna Armour.
Last Friday, the Tigerettes were tramped by the stampeding
state ranked Hallettsville Lady Brahmas, 56-6. No other information was available at press time.
The Tigerettes were to host Rice’s Lady Raiders on Tues.
(Jan. 27) and will make the short trip to Palacios for a Fri.
(Jan. 30) meeting with the rival Sharkettes. Action is slated to
get underway at 6:15 p.m.
Sharks boot La Grange,
fall to Stafford on pitch
The soccer playing Sharks
split their pair of contests on
the pitch last week against La
Grange and Stafford.
Early last week, the Sharks
put the cleats to La Grange
for a 6-2 win.
“This was the best game we
have played up to this point,”
remarked Shark coach James
Overton.
“The offense really got
after it and pressured the
defense from the first touch.
Our defense kept La Grange
from any serious chances until the final 15 minutes. I’m
really proud of our effort.”
Sharks Gilbert Hernandez
and Juan Mancera each found
the back of the net twice for
goals. Hernandez was also
credited for an assist.
Selvin Zamora and Marco
Calixto supplied the Sharks’
other goals.
Mauro Gonzales supplied
the helping foot for two assists and Luis Mancera assisted on another goal.
Last Friday, the Sharks
came up short against Stafford’s Spartans, 2-1.
“We started off very poorly and gave up two goals in
the first four minutes,” said
Overton.
“We eventually calmed
down and figured out that we
could play with them. I was
proud of how we finished,
but we need to come out of
the gate with the intensity
that we finished with.”
The Sharks were to hold
their annual Alumni Soccer
game on Tues. (Jan. 27) and
will open up District play
on Fri. (Jan. 30) at 7 p.m. in
Sweeny.
JV ‘White’,

Brahamas 42-40 in a double overtime thriller.
With one second left in

While the cagers fell
short of a victory, they
displayed never give up
attitude.

Tran led Palacios with 13
points. Tyler Harris hit
the hoop for a dozen and
Tyler Kocurek finished
with two points.
JV RED
The JV ‘Red’ Sharks
fell to Industrial on the

win against Industrial Lady Cobras
BY RYAN WEST
Palacios Beacon Publisher
With the first go round in
district play under their belt,
the Palacios varsity Sharkettes (19-6, 4-1) sit firmly in
second place and are in control of their own destiny.
Last Friday, the Sharkettes
rallied back with a 21 point
fourth quarter flurry to stun
Industrial’s Lady Cobras on
their home court 64-56.
“What a great come from
behind win at one of the
toughest places to play in
south Texas,” noted Sharkette coach Aaron Wollam.
The two teams stood toe to
toe for the first two periods
as Industrial clung to a 32-31
lead at hafltime.
Things didn’t look to bright
for the Sharkettes after the
break as the Lady Cobras increased their lead to eight by
the end of
the third.
In the final period,
Wollam’s
Sharkettes
went into
a scoring
frenzy and
outscored
the snakes
21-6 and capped off the come
from behind road win.
“I will say this about this
year’s team,” said Wollam.
“They are great competitors.”
“If they make a mistake,
they don’t pout; they keep
playing. If they miss a couple
of
shots,
they keep
shooting, they play hard and
compete no matter what is
going on and they never give
up.”
Wollam
added, “I
am dang
lucky to
be able to
coach this
group of
young ladies with
such great
character.”
Palacios sophomore Lila
Filip proved to be snakewrangler and finished with
27 points, 12 steals and five
rebounds. Jennifer Fort bucketed 15 points and finished
with eight rebounds and eight
steals. Sydney Garcia hit
the hoop for 10 points and
grabbed four rebounds and

three steals. Katelyn Sexton cleaned the glass in the
paint and finished with 13 rebounds and six points. Vriana
Hernandez finished with five
rebounds and three points and
Sara Filip netted two points.
Earlier in the week, the
Sharkettes were bounced on
their home court by no. 7
State ranked Hallettsville 6337.
“We had a rough start, falling behind 21-0 to open the
game, but after that I thought
we competed,” remarked
Wollam. “There is a reason
why Hallettsville is ranked
no. 7 in the State; they are
darn good.”
“We will continue to work
to get better,” Wollam added.
The Lady Brahmas kept
the Palacios hot handed Lila
Filip in check, as she finished
with 13 points and five steals.
Fort and Garcia chimed in
with eight points each. Sexton continued to dominate
the boards and finished with
13 and four points. Amoni
Gomez netted three points

Sharks bounced by pair of
State ranked opponents
The varsity Sharks were
dealt a pair of district losses
by state ranked opponents on
the hardwood last week.
In Industrial last Friday
facing the #22 ranked Cobras, the Sharks were unable
to recover from a two point
first quarter as the Cobras
slithered away with a 40-31
victory.
Despite the horrible first
quarter, the Sharks cut the
Cobra lead to 27-24 after
the third quarter. The continued to fight in the fourth and
closed the gap to 32-31 with
two minutes left in the game.
The Sharks managed to get
several good looks on some
shots, but nothing was falling.
Palacios was forced to foul
late and the Cobras closed
out the game on 6-8 shooting
from the free throw line.
Coach Trent Weixelman
called it “A very hard fought
game that didn’t have the ball
bounce our way at the end.
I’m very proud of how the
guys fought back and kept
the game close with a shot to
win it.”
Cameron Sides and Sam
Schulman led the Sharks in
scoring, with nine and eight
points, respectively. Justin
Filip and Jackson Kelley finished with four points each,
and the trio of Johnny Gatida, Isaac Filip and Chase
Ford bucketed two points
apiece.
Earlier in the week, the
Sharks were bucked by Hallettsville’s no. 6 ranked Brahmas, 57-34.
Ford led the Sharks with 10
poitns. Sides pumped in eight
and Gatica netted six. Schulman was limited to just four
points. Justin Filip, Zach Seaman and Kelley netted two
points each.
The Sharks were to visit
Rice on Tues. (Jan. 27) before hosting rival Tidehaven
on Fri. (Jan. 30).
