Prescription drug abuse is a growing trend among our nation’s youth. According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, most young people obtain these drugs from their parents’ or grandparents’ medicine cabinets. For this reason, it is important to secure your prescription medications so that they cannot be easily stolen from your home. In addition, unused, unneeded or expired prescription drugs should be disposed of properly. The Danvers Police Department has a Medicine Disposal Program where unused prescription medications can be dropped in a secure box inside the entrance to the station. One may put the container itself into the disposal box, or if worried about personal information on the container, take the label off first, or simply pour the medication into a plastic bag before inserting into the disposal box opening. Disposal down the drain or toilet is not safe for the environment, since residue has been found in rivers and lakes. Danvers Police about twice a year destroy drugs that have accumulated at headquarters. There is also a secure box inside the station for the disposal of the home use of “sharps”, i.e, medical needles and other sharp medical instruments. TUESDAY TRAVELS “Popcorn & A Movie” – Join us on Tuesday, February 17th at 1 PM. “The Good Lie” Starring Reese Witherspoon. Plot: Mamere and Theo are sons of the Chief in their village in Southern Sudan. When an attack by the Northern militia destroys their home and kills their parents, eldest son Theo is forced to assume the role of Chief and lead a group of young survivors, including his sister Abital, away from harm. As the tattered group make the difficult trek to Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, they meet other fleeing children, bonding with Jeremiah, already a man of faith at 12 and Paul, whose skills become essential to their survival. Thirteen years later, the young adults are given the opportunity to leave the camp and resettle in America. Arriving in Kansas, they are met by Carrie Davis, an employment agency counselor who has been enlisted to help find them jobs. Carrie has successfully kept herself from any emotional entanglements, but these refugees, desperately requiring help navigating the 20th century and rebuilding their shattered lives, need just that. So with the help of her boss, she embarks on her own uncharted territory, and the Lost Boys and these unlikely strangers find humor in the clash of cultures, and heartbreak as well as hope in the challenges of life in America. Rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for thematic elements, some violence, brief strong language and drug use. Dream on you say? Actually, such an option exists and, if you’re eligible, it’s yours for the taking. According to the MA Department of Revenue, some 957,000 residents 65 and older in the state are eligible to receive the tax credit. It’s called the Circuit Breaker, and according to this month’s AARP Bulletin, in 2012 more than 86,000 Massachusetts taxpayers claimed nearly $67 million in refunds under the program, according to the state Department of Revenue. The average refund in 2012 was $774. The Circuit Breaker refund acts the way an electrical circuit breaker would work, but here it prevents property taxes from exceeding an older person’s income and ability to pay taxes. Eligible taxpayers can file for the credit up to three years retroactively, so read the Bulletin story today and learn more about this valuable tax refund.
