MASS INTENTIONS
From the Pastor…..
for the week of February 2nd—February 8th, 2015
“The people who sit in darkness have
seen a great light.”
Today’s Alleluia verse
from Isaiah
Today is my last article for a while. This weekend I begin my
four-month Sabbatical. As you read this, I will be in Colorado, having begun my 30-day directed retreat in the style of St.
Ignatius of Loyola. This retreat is based on the “Spiritual
Exercises of St. Ignatius” who designed this retreat as a fourweek journey through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus,
as well as the salvation of our souls. I look forward to the
privilege of taking this spiritual journey in my life.
Please know of my prayers for all of you at St. Mary Magdalen during this time. After the retreat, I have a number of different experiences planned. I know these four months will
fly by. I am so grateful to the Diocese for allowing me this
opportunity, and I’m also thankful for a
hard-working staff who will keep things
going while I’m away.
Please pray for me as well. God bless
all of you!
Word for the Day
Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life.
It turns what we have into enough, and more.
Melody Beattie
Flu Season—Refrain from Sign of Peace
We have decided for the next several weeks of the height of
the Flu Season to discontinue the traditional “Sign of
Peace” handshake greeting at Mass. This is a temporary
move to help reduce the spread of communicable disease
during this intense Flu Season.
Church Has Automated
External Defibrillator (AED)
Through the kindness of Acadian Ambulance Service, Inc., the parish has received an AED device. This is a lifesaver and is very easy to use by anyone. Should someone have a medical
emergency while at Church, this device
may save their life. It is located on the
wall of the sacristy entrance, and has
step-by-step voice instructions on use.

SCOUT SUNDAY FEBRUARY 8, 2015
The Boy Scouts of America annually celebrates its founding
on February 8, 1910. In the 1940's, the Scout Sunday tradition was started to help people in houses of worship be

to God" pledged each week. The Scout Law says that a
"Scout is Reverent" and the Scouts of all ages promise to do
their "Duty to God". These values strengthen youth character
in their family, community, and faith. Cub Scout Pack 326 is
chartered to St. Mary Magdalen Church. Scouts and their
families will attend Mass at 11 am on Sunday, February 8
along with other scouts from throughout Abbeville. They will
hold a reception in the Ministries Building immediately following Mass, and all are welcome to come meet the scouts

BISHOP’S SERVICES APPEAL
I urge you to persevere in your love for Christ and your faithful observance of the law of Christ. Our Goal is God, the
source of all good. As we say in our prayer, we are to place
our trust in God and in no one else.
In his kindness, our Lord wished to strengthen your
faith, for without it, as the evangelist points out, Christ could
not have performed many of his miracles. He also wished to
listen to your prayer, and so he ordained that you experience
poverty, distress, abandonment, weariness and scorn. God
alone knows the reasons for all this, yet we can recognize
three causes.
In the first place, our blessed Lord is telling you that
he desires to include you among his beloved sons, provided
that you remain steadfast in his ways, for this is the way he
treats his friends and makes them holy. The second reason is
that he is asking you to grow continuously in your confidence
in him alone and not in others. Now there is a third reason.
God wishes to test you like gold in the furnace. The dross is
consumed by the fire, but the pure gold remains and its value
increases. It is in this manner that God acts with his good
servant, who puts his hope in him and remains unshaken in
times of distress. God raises him up and, in return for the
things he has left, out of love for God, he repays him a
hundredfold in this life and with eternal life hereafter. If then
you remain constant in faith in the face of trial, the Lord will
give you peace and rest for a time in this world, and for ever
in the next.
~ from a letter to his brothers by Saint Jerome Emiliani
Page 5
Every Christian must be a living book wherein one can read
the teaching of the gospel. This is what Saint Paul says to
the Corinthians, 'Clearly you are a letter of Christ which I
have delivered, a letter written not with ink, but by the Spirit
of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of
flesh in the heart' (2 Cor 3:3). Our heart is the parchment;
through my ministry the Holy Spirit is the writer because 'my
tongue is nimble as the pen of a skillful scribe' (Ps 45:2).
~ from a sermon by Saint Joseph of Leonissa
Memorial: February 4th
The only reason for my being killed is that I have taught the
doctrine of Christ. I thank God it is for this reason that I die. I
believe that I am telling the truth before I die. I know you
believe me and I want to say to you all once again: Ask
Christ to help you become happy. I obey Christ. After Christ's
example, I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask
God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my
fellow men as a fruitful rain.
