Semas Shines On, WinningTop 3 Places at PacWest Futurity

Tami Semas is on a roll and she isn’t about to slow it down anytime soon. If anything, by going off how her last three weekends
have gone, she will only get hotter and hotter! Semas and her three
futurity horses have been heating up the arena at Buckeye, Arizona
the last month and this past weekend at the PacWest Futurity was
no exception. Her horses, Guys Best Bet, Guys Amberetto, and
Smooth N Famous made their mark once again!
Semas made her name known in the futurity world in 2009 when
she and her futurity horse for that year, Hot N Frosted aka Hotrod, made waves everywhere they went. Through Hot N Frosted,
Semas got to know Bill and Deb Myers with Myers Training Stables,
Home of Frenchmans Guy.
“Hot N Frosted opened a lot of doors for me and started a great
friendship between Bill, Deb and I. I have bought a colt from them
each year since and have not once been disappointed. They breed
and sell the best horses in the country,” noted Semas.
Semas had yet another phenomenal colt, A Smooth Kidder from
the Myers string that she was running in 2013 but unfortunately a
freak accident ended his career and life.
“A Smooth Kidder was the first A Smooth Guy colt that I trained
and competed on. I started running him at the spring futurities and
just loved everything about him. He won everywhere we went. I
was completely heartbroken when he died. He rolled into a fence
and ended up hitting his head in just the right spot on the fence
post and died instantly.”
After losing A Smooth Kidder, Semas wanted to take a step back
from the futurities but Bill (Myers) had a different idea.
“Bill and Deb really pulled me out of the dumps after losing A
Smooth Kidder. I wanted to take a break from the futurities but
they helped pull me through that tough time, along with my family
and friends. Losing a horse is like losing a part of your family. It’s
very difficult,” Semas explained.
Semas and her futurity mount from 2014, Ninnekahs Guy, a son
of Frenchmans Guy, won close to $40,000 last year only hitting a
few futurities. Slowly but surely, Semas knew she was getting back
into her winning ways.
After her run of bad luck, it was time for Semas to see some light
at the end of the tunnel and 2015 was going to be that light. Having
two successful weekends at the 2015 Classic Equine Futurity and
Greg Olson Futurity, Semas and her three futurity mounts were
ready to make the best of their Arizona trip during the PacWest
Futurity.
“The Classic Equine and Greg Olson Futurity went great. We had
a few bobbles here and there but my three horses ran great. The
superstar of the Classic Equine Futurity was Smooth N Famous

The Greg Olson Futurity made for yet another great weekend,
where Guys Best Bet aka Bet, owned by Harry LaToush and ridden
by Semas, won the futurity 1D average and made just under $9,000.

to attend their organizations Youth World Show. A $500 show
assistance checks will be awarded to the Southeastern Arena Youth
Championships and The All American Youth Barrel Race.

On the Field With the Cowboys
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Fans headed to AT&T Stadium on March
1 for RFD-TV’s $2 million rodeo, The American, can now mix
business with pleasure.
By attending a unique live auction in the world’s largest honky
tonk – Billy Bob’s Texas – on February 22, they can purchase ad
space on the backs of their favorite rodeo celebrities who will rope
and ride for millions of dollars on March 1.
During the rodeo, the winning bidders will be promoting their
brand on live television while cheering for their respective contestants from custom-made suites near the 50-yard line. After watching
from the best seats in the house, the buyers will be invited on stage
during the awards ceremony if their cowboy or cowgirl becomes
the champion.
The auction is the brainchild of Randy Bernard, CEO of RFDTV Events, who first brought the lucrative, tournament-style rodeo
to AT&T Stadium in 2014.
“Our goal is to raise money for cowboys while at the same time
giving potential new sponsors an interactive way to get involved in
one of America’s greatest sports,” said Bernard.
The cowboys and cowgirls themselves, notoriously underpaid in
terms of professional sports, will receive 85 percent of the winning
bid, with the remaining 15 percent being donated to one of three
nonprofits dedicated to keeping Western heritage alive – the Texas
Cowboy Hall of Fame, the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of
Fame and the National Cowboy Western and Heritage Museum.
Anyone can participate in the auction on February 22 at Billy
Bob’s Texas in the Fort Worth Stockyards. Bidding will start immediately following the American Semi-Finals in the adjoining
Cowtown Coliseum, or at approximately 6 p.m. Following a silent
auction of all contestants, those commanding the highest bids will
livestock.com.
Tickets for The American Semi-Finals are available for $40 per
single day or a three-performance package of $100, not including
taxes. They can be purchased at the Cowtown Coliseum box office,
at stockyardsrodeo.com, or americanrodeo.com.
Tickets for RFD-TV’s The American, presented by Polaris Ranger, and the PBR’s Iron Cowboy VI are on sale at the AT&T Stadium
Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations and at americanrodeo.com. Prices for each event range from $20 to $150, not including taxes.
New WPRA Tour Program
How and Where Are the 2015 WPRA Tour Standings Used:
The WPRA Tour Standings are used at many approved limited
entry rodeos. As a matter of policy, the WPRA strongly encourages all limited entry rodeos to include the WPRA Tour Standings
as one of their qualifiers. By including the WPRA Tour, it provides
an opportunity for a wider range of our member to participate and
possibly gain entry to a limited entry rodeo.
Eligibility: To receive points in the WPRA Tour Standings, you
must be a current WPRA card member before the competition
begins.
Timing: The 2015 WPRA Tour includes selected rodeos
between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015 of the 2015
competition year.
Number of Rodeos/Events: The 2015 WPRA Tour is made up
of a total of 65 rodeos/events. There are 65 rodeos across the US
(5 from each circuit and Canada).
Type of Rodeos/Events: Rodeos selected to be part of the
2015 WPRA Tour are: 1 round or multiple rounds. Limited entry
rodeos are not part of the 65 identified in the program. In the case
of a rodeo with multiple rounds, points will be allocated based on
the average only.
2015 WPRA Tour Standings: The 2015 WPRA Tour standings
will be point based and will count from your best 7 results (out of
the 65 possible qualifying rodeos) where one competed and won
money up to and including the 15th position. There is no minimum
or maximum number of rodeos/events required.
Points: There is a 15- point scale, with points allocations from 15
points (for 1st place money) to 1 point (for 15th place money). No
more than 15 positions will be awarded points. At a multiple rodeo/
event, points are allocated to the average only. Points are awarded
to money winners only, i.e. if a rodeo only pays 12 places, than first
gets 15 points and 12th gets 4 points.
Note: Points in the 2015 WPRA Qualifying Tour standings will
count from your best 7 rodeos/events where you have competed
and won money.
Tie-Breaking Method: Ties in the 2015 WPRA Qualifying Tour
Standings will be broken by looking at total money won at your best
7 point rodeos/events.

won third in the futurity 1D average by placing in both go rounds
and the average. In addition, Smooth N Famous also claimed the
Double Crown, which was the combined average from both the
Classic Equine Futurity and Greg Olson Futurity.
Lastly, Guys Amberetto aka Amber was named for Semas’ horse
for the slot race during the Greg Olson and ended up winning 4th
in the slot race as well as placed in the first round of the futurity.
She and Semas ended the weekend winning 4th in the futurity 1D
average, totaling just under $11,000 for her weekend earnings.
After two stellar weekends, Semas was confident going into the
PacWest futurity, the last leg of the Triple Crown.
“I felt great going into the PacWest. My horses were working
great and I felt like my timing was on point with each of them.
Talmadge (Green) had two slots for lease in the slot race, so I ended
up running Guys Amberetto and Guys Best Bet in those two slots.
Unlike the two previous futurities, PacWest allowed you to run as
many horses as you wanted in the slot race, so I bought a final slot
for Smooth N Famous to run in.”
The slot race was based on the first go-round of the PacWest
Futurity, which was on Saturday.
“The first round went amazing. Guys Best Bet ran a 17.2 and I
was very happy with her. Then came Smooth N Famous. He tried
his butt off and ran a 17.1. I was ecstatic. Last was Guys Amberetto
and she was a 17.3. She had a nice run but hung in a spot down
on the third which cost us a little time. Overall, I was completely
tickled with how my horses worked in the first round.”
Semas’ times for the first go-round of the PacWest counted for
the slot race as well, where Smooth N Famous won 1st, Guys Best
Bet won 2nd, and Guys Amberetto won 4th, respectively. In addition, they won 1st, 2nd and 5th in the first round of the futurity.
“The second round of the PacWest futurity went just as great!
Guys Amberetto was a 17.0, Smooth N Famous was a 17.2 and
Guys Best Bet was a 17.4. Guys Best Bet had a bit of a baby moment during her second run when she spooked at the sun spot on
the first barrel. I tried not to let it slow us down and kept telling
myself to not panic and ride hard. She was still a 17.4 with that
bobble,” Semas said.
Smooth N Famous, owned by Tami Semas, won the PacWest Slot
Race, the PacWest 1D Futurity Average and the Triple Crown, tallying up to $21,142.00.
Guys Amberetto, owned by Tami Semas, won 2nd in the PacWest
1D Futurity Average, and 4th in PacWest Slot Race, adding up to
$8,451.
Barrel Racing Report
Guys Best Bet, owned by Harry LaToush, won 3rd in the
PacWest 1D Futurity Average and 2nd in the PacWest Slot race,
bumping her lifetime earnings up by $12,394.
Semas had what one would call a fairy tale trip while in Arizona.
She will be leaving Arizona with over $70,000 just in three weekends of futurities. That not only says something about the trainer
and rider but also about the breeding program that these three
horses came from.
“It’s a huge credit to Bill and Deb’s breeding program. They have
worked hard to get to where they are, and have bred some phenomenal horses. I feel extremely blessed to be able to ride some of these
fabulous horses. Every horse I own is from their breeding program
and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have confidence when I buy
a colt from Bill and Deb.”
In addition, Semas would like to send out a big thanks out to Sue
Smith who has been very instrumental in her success, which she
credits for helping her out with her horsemanship along with many
other great barrel racing tips.

Scott wins American qualifier in Buckeye

The Phoenix suburb of Buckeye, Ariz., has become a mecca for
the most talented barrel horses in the country each January, and
now the incentive to make the trip includes a qualifier to RFD-TV’s
$2.5 million rodeo, The American presented by Polaris Ranger.
The BBR-sanctioned race on Jan. 24 in Buckeye was held in conjunction with the PacWest 3 Drum Classic. And as expected, it was extremely competitive, with the winner of out of 77 horses clocking a smoking
16.9-second run on the standard pattern in the covered arena.
It was the first American qualifier entered by Katelyn Scott, who
was riding her sister Lorissa Jo Merritt’s 7-year-old mare, A Kool
Talent (“Tally”).
“I somehow got blessed to run her,” said Scott, 23, who lives with
her husband in Odessa, Texas. “My sister bought her in April and
just worked on getting her speeded up and then last fall she started
letting me run her.”
Scott ran Tally the first time at a barrel racing finals in west Texas
and hit pay dirt both days. So the sisters decided to late-enter the mare
in the derby at the BFA World Championships in Oklahoma City,
where she made the short round (but didn’t finish in the money).
“We did have to plan, with these qualifiers,” said Scott. “We
wanted to take her to a place where we could get her in the arena
beforehand, and we thought the pen at Buckeye would suit her
well.”
Scott obviously had the goal of qualifying to the American
Semi-Finals, but hadn’t planned on winning the race, which paid her
$1,925. Second place went to Lindsey Trammel on Stitch’s Smoke
N Fame with a 17.079. Her horse is a half-sister to Andrea Cline’s
good horse, Stitch’s Streaknfame. Both are by Firewater Ta Fame
(“Stitch”).
A Kool Talent, meanwhile, is out of a Flaming Talent mare and
by First N Kool – a First Down Dash stallion out of a Dash For
Cash/Azure Te/Go Man Go mare.
“She’s really smooth and level through her turns,” said Scott. “I

think it’s important that a horse be somewhat fluid and smooth
through the turn no matter what their style is.”
She had run Tally in the Open on the previous weekend in Buckeye
at the 16th Greg Olson Futurity/Derby and hit the second barrel
leaving it to clock a 17.0. So she knew she had the horsepower to
wind up in the top 10 of the American qualifier race. But then in the
slot race, the mare had stumbled at the third barrel and posted a 17.3.
“All we could think was just to keep believing in our favor, and it
worked,” said Scott. “This was one of the last qualifiers and I was

blessed to get qualified. I’m pretty excited.”
A Kool Talent came from the Rankin family, who raised her in
Abilene. The youngest Rankin daughter, Caitlin, started her and
took her to some futurities in 2012, after which she was sold. Later,
Merritt traded a horse to the owner in College Station, Texas, to buy
Tally.
“I haven’t quite decided which horse I will run in Fort Worth,”
Scott said. “I have a couple of options, because I don’t think the
tiny Fort Worth arena will suit this mare. I haven’t been there for
four or five years so I’m going [to the Stockyards Rodeo] this weekend to get in the arena. I don’t know what to expect.”
Also in Buckeye, Talmadge Green became the ninth male barrel
racer to earn a berth in the American Semi-Finals with his 17.0second run on DTF Way Ta Fire. Just one qualifier remains (in Glen
Rose, Texas) for barrel racers looking to compete for that $35,000
first-place prizes at The American Semi-Finals in Fort Worth,
Texas, Feb. 18-22. Several more will advance from there on to THE
AMERICAN inside AT&T Stadium, where one could win up to $1
million.
“It’s just amazing in this sport that we have the opportunity to
run for that much money,” said Scott. “It’s just awesome. That’s
more money than even the girls at the NFR get to make.”
Also, anyone who does well enough at the Semi-Finals to advance
will be invited to take part in the sponsor auction held immediately
after the Semi-Finals in the adjoining Billy Bob’s Texas nightclub.
Starting at about 6 p.m. on Feb. 22, a silent auction will be held so
bidders can buy ad space on the backs of the contestants where a
back number would traditionally go.
Bob Tallman will emcee, and Superior Livestock will conduct the
sale. Those contestants commanding the highest bids will then be
resold in a live auction televised at 8 p.m. (Central) on RFD-TV.
Everyone is welcome.

Johnson & WW Nellie Laveaux Dominate National Western

Meghan Johnson, Deming, N.M., and WW Nellie Laveaux led
from start to finish at the National Western PRCA Rodeo in Denver. They were the first gunners through the gate in the opening
performance and never relinquished their hold on the No. 1 position throughout the rodeo.
“Talk about a set of nerves!” said Johnson, 22. “It was nervewracking. I was first out in the short go, too. I don’t like being first
out!”
Since it was her first time to run at Denver, Johnson took advantage of the 6 a.m. practice session before the first performance that
Friday afternoon.
“Everyone told me about the offset pattern,” she said. “I was
kind of worried about that, but that first run just seemed like a
simple run. She actually checked herself pretty good on the first
barrel. I thought it was a slip because I flew forward—thank God
I had rubber bands on! I looked back at the video and she was just
shutting down and I wasn’t ready for it. The second and third were
good turns.”
They had stopped the clock in 15.25.
“I had a friend from college rodeo tell me that was a really good
time. She said Christy Loflin won the (Cinch) Shootout with a 15.2,
so I thought this might be pretty good, but I still had to wait for
all those girls to run and you never know if the ground is going to
change.”
Friday night they were even quicker with a 15.14 for their second
round run.
“My time was a little bit faster even though I was on the bottom of the ground. Whenever I’m not first out, I seem to be a
little calmer because I have a little better idea when I’m going to be
out. When you’re first out, you have wait for the sponsor girls with

Following her first two runs, Johnson returned to New Mexico
State University in Las Cruces, where she’s majoring in agriculture
business, for classes. She even made a detour to Buckeye, Ariz., for

“I ran my backup horse at the American qualifier,” Johnson
explained. “She’s a Frenchmans Fabulous. We just missed it by
2/10ths of second. It got really tough over there, but I didn’t want
to draw out of it. My dad took another rig with Nellie to Denver
and I caught a plane in Phoenix Saturday evening and flew into
Denver for the short round Sunday. It was a crazy setup. I wasn’t
too sure about doing all of that. I thought we’d officially hit the
‘crazy people’ mark, but it all paid off.”
Johnson had a 4/10th lead going into Sunday’s short go and
all she wanted to do was have a smooth clean run. She ended up
fourth in the short with a 15.56.
“I thought I hit the first barrel coming out of it,” she said. “I did

racing when she was 8 or 9.
Johnson partnered with Nellie when she was a 16-year-old sophomore in high school. Her mother—who actually started barrel racing when she did—purchased Nellie as a 5-year-old. Bred by Darrel

Williams, Houston, Texas, Nellie is a 2001 daughter of First Down
Laveaux out of the stakes placed mare Darlin Dannell, by Dashing
Encounter. She raced in Louisiana under three different owners until she was 4, amassing earnings of $11,362 and a high speed index
of 87. Nellie was on her way to a horse sale when she was unloaded
for a rest in Deming.
“A friend of my mom’s called her and said there was a really nice
horse over here, that she needed to come take a look,” recalled
Johnson. “My mom went and rode her. They guy (hauling her)
wasn’t coming back for another week or so, so my mom asked if we
could take her and ride her for a week. She didn’t know how to stop
or turn or anything. All she knew how to do was run forward, but
Mom took a liking to her.”
When Johnson’s horse got hurt half-way through her high school
rodeo season, she jumped on Nellie and her mother never got her
back. That same year, Johnson and Nellie qualified for the National
High School Finals Rodeo. Nellie filled Johnson’s WPRA permit
the first weekend she bought it when she turned 18 in November
2010 and later carried her to two College National Finals and two
Turquoise Circuit Finals.
“My parents told me when I first started college—because I
wanted to pro rodeo hard—that the deal was I had to get a degree,
before I devoted my time to hitting the road rodeoing,” explained
Johnson, who will graduate in May. “It’s fixing to come that time.
I’m getting my degree, so now I’m like ‘Hey Dad, remember that
deal we talked about four years ago!’”
At the start of her senior year, Johnson told her rodeo coach that
she was going to focus on pro rodeos for 2015. Next up for her is
Fort Worth, followed by San Angelo, Texas. Then her circuit rodeos
start up in Arizona with Yuma, Buckeye, Tucson and Scottsdale.
“The goal this year is to be in the Top 30,” said Johnson, who
wanted to thank her family, friends and sponsors for their support.
“2015 is looking like it’s going to be a pretty good year!”

Headin’ For Home
M
y two great-nieces recently came to see us from Denver.
We have horses, cats, dogs, chickens and anything else
Mike will let me drag home, so of course it’s fun for city
kids to come here. Stop number one is ALWAYS the barn and what
goes on there. My grandkids are familiar with most things country
and all about the same age so it was fun to hear some of the explanations to questions asked……such as…..
Simone, age 6. “Where do these eggs come from?” as she is gazing down at the nest and gently picking them up.
Darcy, age 6. “A chicken poops eggs out their butt” as she rolls
her eyes like EVERYONES Papa Mike has already explained this to
them.
Just a side note here that if you want your grandchildren to know
the factual accounts of stuff, please don’t call Mike. He tends to
exaggerate and dress things up a bit!
I am a firm believer that you tell the truth in love. It’s better than
lying and then trying to re-explain things later. I have found over
the years, that mostly we adults don’t want to hear the truth. We
want to hear what we want to hear. “That is a really nice horse”.
“Your grandkids are truly beautiful”. And, “No those pants don’t
make your butt look big.” Now I know that we should be nice. But
seriously, if those pants make my rear twice as wide, please love
me enough to tell me so!! And don’t say, “Good run” when I’ve
creamed three barrels on my teachers pet horse! I have obviously
done something wrong here and would appreciate a look at it from
a different point of view!
The Word of God tells us that the TRUTH will make us FREE.
Read it yourself. It’s John 8:32. Just keep reading. It’s really good
stuff.
Let’s don’t be afraid of the truth. It’s like the sun. Sometimes it’s
hard to look at but you can’t live without it! Bless you!
