Cathedral Life 1-29-15 - The Cathedral of St. Andrew

"Pa`akai a Malamalama" (Salt and Light)
Reflections from the Dean
Thursday, January 29, 2015
"Faith & Service"
"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."
Everybody can be great . . . because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to
serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of
grace. A soul generated by love."
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
I write as we have this past weekend elected our lay leadership. The results
are inside this edition of Cathedral Life. I thank all who offered themselves for
an election. I look forward to serving with those elected, and I hope that
those not elected will continue to serve in other ways. A life of faith means
many things including a life of service. Service is what Dr. King was about and
it is what we should be about.
Dorothy Day was an American, mid-twentieth century figure. She was a
Roman Catholic writer, pacifist, activist, and founder of the Catholic Worker
Movement. Dorothy suggests that we love and serve God as much as we love
the person we love the least. That, this neglected and challenging love, must
guide our conversations with each other in our homes and all the public spaces of life.
I encourage each of us to look where we can serve to the greater glory of God in this year.

Opening the Prayer Book: (Jan 18th - Mar 15th)
Join us for the next several weeks as Walter and Susan facilitate a discussion on Episcopalians
being "People of the Prayer Book." It will be practical, offering tips on how to find your way around
the Book of Common Prayer (BCP), but also ripe with why we do - what we do! You're encouraged to
bring your own Book of Common Prayer if you have one. (We will also have copies to borrow.) Even if
you missed earlier sessions, you can join us at any time.
Feb 1st: The Daily Office tour - A practical and concrete session that first
talks about praying the hours. This will be a practical session to show how
to do Morning Prayer (MP) and Evening Prayer (EP) (plus Compline) from
the BCP. Shorter Morning Prayer options shared; with a handout for a
daily Lenten MP use at home.
Our weekly conversations will refer to John Westerhoff's book, Living Faithfully as a Prayer Book
People. For those who want to purchase a book, we will have them there for $10.

Lent is almost upon us!
It's not too early to consider how you might enter into a Holy Lent this year.
May we suggest that an important part of that preparation starts with worship and fellowship with
one another? In joining with your Cathedral Ohana, you join the universal church in preparing our
hearts for Easter's resurrection joy.
Ash Wednesday (Feb 18th)
The Lenten season begins with Ash Wednesday. Interestingly - many feel this is one of their most
meaningful services of the year. The Cathedral is open to all - and offers three opportunities to receive
ashes and enter into a Holy Lent.
7:15 am - Ash Wednesday - Holy Eucharist
12:15 am - Ash Wednesday - Holy Eucharist
5:30 pm - Ash Wednesday - Choral Eucharist
Wednesday Evening's Lenten Program (Feb 25th - Mar 25th)
Between Ash Wednesday and Holy Week, we will offer a 5-week Wednesday Evening Lenten Program
that explores, in detail, the drama and tensions of Holy Week (Passion Crossing Points). As we've done
in years past - our program of a light soup supper and teaching will be enclosed in worship, before and
after.
To help us get a better idea of our "headcount" on food preparation for the Soup Supper, please email
the office ([email protected]) (or sign up under the Aloha Tent) if you plan
to attend. But even if you haven't signed up - come!!!
5:30 pm - Evensong and Holy Eucharist With a Reflection (Cathedral)
6:15 pm - Lenten Soup Supper and Program (Von Holt Room)
8:30 pm - Sung Compline (Cathedral)

An Interview With Dan Benedict,
Ecumenical Associate
by Harry Speigelberg
The Reverend Dan Benedict serves as Ecumenical Associate at The Cathedral of
St. Andrew and has led Emmaus Journey, our catechumenate, since January
2012.
Dan was born and grew up in central New York State. He earned a BA degree at
Syracuse University in Syracuse NY and a Masters of Divinity from the American
Baptist Seminary of the West in California. He has done further study at the Claremont School of
Theology. He is an ordained elder/presbyter in The United Methodist Church. In 2003, he completed
a certificate program in Digital Culture Ministry through Perkins School of Theology and Lumicon
Digital Productions.
A liturgy specialist and teacher, he served thirty years as a pastor of congregations in New York and
California (Santa Barbara, Los Angeles and San Diego areas). Subsequently he served for 12 years at
the General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church in Nashville TN as Director of
Worship Resources. Dan has written three books and numerous articles focused on worship,
evangelization and liturgy.
Also in his career, Dan served on the United Methodist Baptism Study Committee that developed By
Water and the Spirit: A United Methodist Understanding of Baptism(2000) and was a member of the
United Methodist Holy Communion Study Committee mandated by the 2000 General Conference
(similar to the Episcopal Church's General Convention). Its work, published as This Holy Mystery: A
United Methodist Understanding of Holy Communion, was adopted the 2004 General Conference.
Dan has served on the board of directors of the North American Association for the Catechumenate
and remains an active advocate for the centrality of baptismal ministry. He was a contributing author
of Go Make Disciples, a catechumenal ministry handbook published in 2012.
You'll be interested to know that Dan is also the Abbot of The Order of Saint Luke, a dispersed
religious order of women and men, lay and clergy, founded by Methodists in 1946, now including
members from many denominations. Dedicated to sacramental and liturgical scholarship, education,
and practice the order seeks to live the sacramental life under its Rule of Life and Service.
When asked what we should call him, Dan says, "My baptismal name is Daniel. You can call me Dan or
Daniel. If you want to call me Father, Abbot, or Pastor, that is fine too."
In 2005 he moved to Waialua, Oahu and continues to write, teach, and consult. As part of his teaching
ministry, Dan teaches online courses with laity and clergy through Southwestern College's (Kansas)
Institute for Discipleship.
He is married to Mary O, who is a member of the Cathedral. They have a son and daughter and ten
grandchildren, six boys and four girls. Son Jonathan is married to Lei and they live next door in
Waialua. Daughter Sara and husband Rob live in northern Virginia . In addition to loving worship as a
professional pursuit, he practices contemplative prayer, loves powering home and car with the sun,
and enjoys gardening, walking the beaches, cooking, reading poetry, and good novels.
The Cathedral of St. Andrew is very privileged to have Dan and Mary O worship with us.
Stewardship
On behalf of the Dean and the Cathedral Chapter, we would like to extend our deep appreciation to
those who presented a pledge card for 2015. As of January 20, we have gratefully received a total
pledge amount of $266,310 from 136 pledgers. That's up from last year! For comparison, on January
23, 2014, we had received a promise of $256,419 from 145 pledgers. By this date in 2013 we had just
120 pledgers promising a total of $238,850. We've raised significantly more than last year and are a
growing and healthy congregation - but still need your help to top the total number of pledgers. Every
little bit counts - so, if you are putting any amount in the plate but haven't filled out a pledge card
please do so.
Thank you all for helping us go forward with God's work in 2015! If we missed your name, or if you
would like to pledge or increase your pledge for this year, it is still not too late! Pledge cards are
available in the Cathedral or the office, or please email or call us and we will be very happy to mail you
one immediately.

Eucharistic Minister & Visitor Training on Oahu
The Cathedral needs more people to serve as Eucharistic
Ministers (chalice bearers) and to serve as Eucharistic Visitors
(take communion to our parishioners who cannot come to
church.) Both of these ministries require licensing from the
Bishop. To become licensed, Susan+ will do the hands-on training,
but you must also attend the Diocesan training as described
below on April 11th. For those who are in the process of becoming licensed, or would be willing to
serve in one of those capacities - please sign up to attend the Diocesan training.
The required Eucharistic Minister and Eucharistic Visitor Training is on Saturday, April 11, 2015, at The
Cathedral of St. Andrew, beginning at 9:00 am. The trainer is the Rev. Walter Stevens.
Both EMs and EVs attend the morning session, which begins at 9:00 am. That session lasts 2.5
hours. Eucharistic Ministers, need only attend the morning session. Those who intend to be
Eucharistic Visitors stay for the afternoon session, which lasts until 3:30 pm. To register, either see
Susan+ ([email protected]) for assistance, or register on the Diocesan
website. Space is limited, so register early.
You can hear an interview with Lorenza
at http://www.ministrywith.org/media/audio/audio_view/?id=15 and see an informal presentation
she made in 2013 at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjuSDewHYAo
Choral Services on Sundays at 5:30 pm

Sunday, February 1
Candlemas Procession and Evensong
The Feast of the Presentation, popularly known as "Candlemas,"
is one of the principal Feasts of Our Lord that the Book of Common Prayer keeps.
The presentation of Christ in the temple forty days after his birth
commemorates the entry of the 'true light' into the world.
You are invited to bring candles from home to be blessed
along with candles used at the cathedral throughout the year.
February 8 - Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany, The Cathedral Men's Schola
February 15 - Last Sunday after the Epiphany, The Hawaii Sacred Choir
February 22 - First Sunday in Lent, The Diocesan Choir
Godly Play
The Children's Gathering on the Square
Sundays, 9:00 - 10:00 am
The Loft at St. Peter's Church
The program takes place in The Loft at the back of St. Peter's Church, from 9:00 to 10:00 am on
Sunday mornings. It is appropriate for children who are curious about the bible stories that they hear
in church, enrolled in pre-school through the 4th grade of school. Older children are welcome to assist
as "helpers" or participate in "The ROCK" (Relationships, Outreach, Christ & Kids) program located in
the Sun/Son room at St. Peter's.
February 1. Parable of the Leaven. The lesson for today is The Parable of the Leaven. This story is
found in the Bible both in the book of Matthew and Luke. In modern English, the term "leaven" has a
positive connotation, but in ancient literature, except for Jesus' parable, the connotation was
universally negative. It was a sign of moral corruption, because fermentation is a process of
putrefaction in the mass of dough. Leaven was made by storing a piece of bread in a dark, damp place,
until mold formed. Our children do not know about this ancient way of thinking about leavening, so
the parable will define itself for them as it unfolds.
February 8. Story of the Life of "St." Valentine. Today we celebrate the life of "St." Valentine
who loved for God. Valentine was executed of February 14, 270. The practice of sending love
messages on February 14 originated in part from the story of Valentine's note to the jailer's blind
daughter. This day celebrates love and commemorates Valentine's life.
