500 MAIN Winter 2015 Newsletter HARVEY JOHNSON: A Triple Middle Passage (January 17 – April 12, 2015) Opening Reception: Friday, January 23 Houston ar st Harvey Johnson will return home this winter with an exhibi on opening at AMSET, en tled Harvey Johnson: A Triple Middle Passage. Born in Port Arthur in 1947, Johnson is familiar with the southeast Texas area and renders poe c imagery of his upbringing, African American culture, Negro spirituals, folklore and religious symbolism in his art. This exhibi on will feature over 30 works on paper and pain ngs by Johnson and will be a major solo exhibi on, inspired by an earlier feature of his work at The African American Library at the Gregory School, Houston in 2013 (curated by Danielle Burns). Burns is the guest curator of the AMSET exhibi on, and has worked with AMSET curatorial staff to prepare for this show. In celebra on of this landmark exhibi on, AMSET is publishing a full color exhibi on catalogue, including an interview between Burns and Johnson, image Harvey Johnson, Humble Yo’self de Bell Done Ring, 2011, acrylic oil wash on canvas 41 1/2 x 32 3/4 in., highlights and an ar st biography. collec on of John H. Stone Johnson graduated from Texas Southern University, Houston (1971) with a B.A. in Educa on, later receiving his M.F.A from Washington State University in Pullman, Washington (1973). While at Texas Southern University (TSU), Johnson studied under Dr. John Biggers, who remained a mentor and friend for the dura on of his career (the two o en collaborated on commissions). Following his studies, Johnson returned to Houston where he accepted a post as Instructor of Art at TSU. He was a devoted ar st and educator to the students of TSU for over thirty years (re red as Professor of Art in 2007). Johnson’s career as an ar st is lauded with numerous honors and awards; he was the recipient of a Ford Founda on grant in 1977, traveled to Sierra Leone to research African-American Ancestral Art in 1990, and was recently acknowledged by city of Houston Mayor Annise Parker as an important, founding ar st of Houston (“Founding Ar st Day Proclama on,” 2013). This exhibi on is generously funded, in part, by the Edaren Founda on, the City of Beaumont, the Wesley W. Washburn, M.D. and Lulu L. Smith, M.D. Endowment Fund, the Texas Commission on the Arts, the C. Homer and Edith Fuller Chambers Charitable Founda on, Sandra F. Clark and Dr. Charles and Linda Foutz. Caprice Pierucci: Dream State (January 17 to April 12, 2015) Opening Reception: Friday, January 23 This winter, we welcome ar st Caprice Pierucci to AMSET with a solo exhibi on of her large-scale wood sculptures. Pierucci’s sculptures interlock, interlace and dance together, building a “tapestry” of wood that resembles woven fabric. Before turning to wood, Caprice o en worked in other media and explored with fiber works. She cites her late mother, renowned fiber ar st Louise Holeman Pierucci, as a key influence on her career. Louise encouraged Caprice to pursue a life as an ar st, and the two o en collaborated on fiber pieces. The sculptures presented in this exhibi on evidence these forma ve influences and Caprice’s keen eye and facility with the medium of wood. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Pierucci currently resides in Aus n, Texas, where she splits me between crea ng art in her Aus n studio and teaching Fibers at Texas State University in San Marcos. She received her B.F.A. from Carnegie-Mellon University, Pi sburgh, Pennsylvania in 1983, later a ending the School of Visual Arts in New York (graduated with her M.F.A. in 1989). Pierucci has received numerous awards throughout her career; she was nominated for Aus n’s “2010 Ar st of the Year 3D,” declared a winner in Interna‐ onal Art Waves: Art and Design Compe ‐ on in the Netherlands, and has exhibited her art throughout Texas and the na on. Café Arts DIVIDING TIME: Works on Paper by Chris Troutman On View: Through March 22, 2015 Opening this January, our Café Arts space will feature a selec on of monumental charcoal drawings by Chris Troutman, Assistant Professor of Art at Lamar University. Before moving to Beaumont, Troutman lived in Japan, where he returns annually, as well as Illinois, California, Kentucky and Indiana. Much of his imagery references these geographic locales, exploring the rela onship between memory and pictorial expression. His pieces are large in scale and divided into mul ple sec ons, building a con nuous narra ve throughout his composi on. Born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in Peoria, Illinois, Troutman graduated from Bradley University in 2003. He moved to Japan that same year, where he and his wife opened a conversaonal English school. Upon his return to the states, he received his graduate degree from California State University in 2008. He currently teaches drawing at Lamar University, Beaumont, Texas. Born in Denison, Texas in 1907, Sterns Price eventually moved to Beaumont, where she was a major figure in the local art scene. She assisted in the founding of the Beaumont Art Museum (now AMSET), where she also taught anatomy and life-pain ng classes. This exhibi on will feature a variety of pain ngs and drawings from Stern Price’s oeuvre, paying a en on, in parcular, to her me in Taos, New Mexico where she briefly studied with renowned ar st Walter Ufer. The range of styles and subjects in this exhibi on will explore her movement from tradi onal, conserva ve composi ons to abstracon, and her exquisite versa lity in both Will‐Amelia Sterns Price, Dock, oil on Masonite, 18 x 31 7/8 areas, fluidly transi oning between in., c. 1960, The Bobbie & John L. SELECTIONS FROM THE PERMANENT COLLECTION (April 25, 2015 – August 30, 2015) Opening Reception: Friday, May 1 In conjunction with the Will-Amelia Sterns Price exhibition, we will also feature a selection of works from our permanent collection, highlighting the diversity and strength of this collection. The works on view will focus on fine and folk art created in the 19th century through present, with a focus on the Texas region. A full color catalogue will be published to accompany this exhibition, highlighting AMSET’s collecting mission, focus, and objects acquired by the museum over the years. John Alexander, The Beast, Arnhem Land, Northern Australia, pastel and charcoal on paper, 50 x 72 in., 2001 Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Permanent Collec on Permanent Collection Spotlight DOROTHY HOOD – Sounds From The Earth DOROTHY HOOD, Sounds From the Earth, 1972, oil on canvas, Gi of Dr. and Mrs. Mavis Kelsey Dorothy Hood’s 1972 pain ng en tled Sounds From the Earth is a significant part of AMSET’s t ll Thi t l permanent collec on. This stellar, monumental work is one of two Hood pain ngs in our permanent collec on, which focuses on modern and contemporary American art with an emphasis on regional ar sts. This pain ng is exemplary of Hood’s signature period during the 1960s and 1970s, which is characterized by large pain ngs with sweeping waves of color that spread throughout the composi on, o en producing a rain-like effect across the canvas crea ng an atmospheric void. Shapes, fissures and cave-like mo fs are juxtaposed against Hood’s minimal backgrounds, giving a sense of excitement and mystery to her works that o en resemble cosmic mo fs in their nonobjec vity. In addi on to large-scale pain ngs, such as those in AMSET’s permanent collec on, Hood also created fascina ng abstract collages and watercolors, as well as stunning drawings that are at mes more representa onal in nature, depic ng organic, flora elements and otherworldly, surrealis c figures. Born in Bryan, Texas in 1919, Hood studied art at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1937 -40, and the Art Students League in New York in 1941. Following these studies, she moved to Mexico where she remained un l 1961. While there, she met significant Mexican modernists including José Clemente Orozco, who became a close friend, and married Velasco Maidana, a Bolivian composer and conductor in Mexico City. In 1961, Hood and Maidana moved to Houston, where Hood accepted a post as instructor at the Museum School at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (she taught there un l 1976). She lived in Houston for the remainder of her career, where she was lauded with a solo exhibi on of her drawings at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston 1975, and honored as the Ar st of the Year by the Art League of Houston in 1984. Hood exhibited at many pres gious ins tu ons throughout her career and died in Houston in 2000. Her works are highly sought a er by collectors of American art, in par cular, those who focus their collec ons on ar sts living and working in Texas. In addi on to AMSET, her work is in numerous public and private collec ons, including the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Chris ; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Na onal Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Susie Kalil, art historian and independent curator, is currently working on a retrospec ve exhibi on and book featuring the life and art of Dorothy Hood with the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Chris . Part of our mission at AMSET is to support and acquire works by regional ar sts. Dorothy Hood is one of many key ar sts from our region that is also well-known on a more na onal scale. We depend on the generous support of our museum patrons and donors to assist in building our collec on, and are constantly looking to diversify and strengthen our growing permanent collecon holdings. We con nue to raise funds through annual gala auc ons, grants and contribu ons. Please contact the museum at 409-832-3432 if you would like more informa on on how you can help us meet our goals.
