CHECK THIS OUT!
During Sunday school this month, our children have opportunities to learn
about God's love for them as well as some of the miracles Jesus
performed. Our wise and wonderful teachers will not only lead engaging
lessons, they'll also love on our kids and serve as godly examples. Make
attending Sunday school a priority -- you will be glad you did!

W o r s h ip Is . . .
If what most of us were taught as children is any indication, the most
important thing we need to know about attending a worship service
is sitting still and being quiet. In fact, I have a friend that was taught
that lesson so well he almost never goes to church. He says that
sitting still for an hour and listening to other people talk just isn’t his
thing. Can’t say I blame him, if indeed, that is the essence of church.
Truth is, sitting still and being quiet is not what a church service is all
about. When we come to church, we worship; and worship, while it
takes many forms, is not passive.
Instead of planning to sit painfully still while time slowly creeps by, I
find it helpful to think of worship as a conversation. Not a casual
conversation but a powerful, mystical, transforming conversation
with the one who is closer than breath; a conversation that involves
both listening and sharing.
It begins with an open heart. When we are gathered, Christ is
present and the Spirit speaks. We hear the words of life in our songs,
prayers, readings and sermons. We will hear them even more
clearly if we ask ourselves, what is God saying to me, today? How is
God comforting, calling, forming me, in this service? Listen and you
will hear.

In addition to listening, we speak. We offer God’s welcome to our
fellow worshippers, we sing to the Lord songs that reveal our heart,
and of course, we pray. We pray for others, for our church, for our
worship leaders, and for ourselves. Hopefully the entire time is filled
with our prayers for each part of the service and for those seated
around us.
Finally, and I guess you saw this coming; there is a place for being
quiet and still. But it is a quietness that is filled with awe and it is
stillness like the stillness you seek when you are in the forest, hoping
to be captured by the majesty of nature.
All to say, there is a little more to it than trying to make it through the
service without misbehaving. When we worship, we listen deeply,
we pray from the center of our hearts, and we are still and know that
God is.

Concerns & Opportunities
Sympathy
The Hibben family extends sympathy to the family and friends of
Anne Smith, who died on Wednesday of this week. Funeral services
were held in the Hibben sanctuary on Friday, January 30th, officiated
by our pastors. We lift this family in our prayers and trust that God
will embrace them with His love and comfort.
means it's time once again for the Souper
Bowl of Caring. Hibben's Youth will join
in this nationwide effort to tackle hunger.
They will be stationed at the exits of each
worship service to collect your monetary
donations, which will be used to support
organizations in our area that work to
eliminate hunger. We are asking that
each person in attendance donate $1.00
(or more!) to the cause.
