This year Mililani Uka Elementary has had a chance to participate in the Aloha VEX IQ robotics tournament at Island Pacific Academy on January 17th. Our students worked hard and did their best. The results for the teamwork ranking was #30 out of #39 teams and for the skills ranking was #13 out of #26 teams. This team was led by Mrs. Ohira, Ms. Gamiao, and Mrs. Kishimoto. Our team was very fortunate to have parent volunteers, Mr. Zaborski and Mr.Hanger. We appreciated all the support from our Principal Heather Wilhelm, our technology teacher Mr. Nguyen, and parents. Our team was very excited to participate in our very first competition and looking forward to more to come. What’s better than pizza? BOGO Pizza with a mission! Every month we would like to feature one of our staff members in our new getting to know you section of our newsletter. The featured staff member for this edition will be our very own SASA (School Administrative Services Assistant), Ms. Jo-Ann Chang. Ms. Chang has been an office clerk at Mililani Uka Elementary School since 1989. She remembers when our school had 2 campuses because we had 1300 students in the school, and used to go up to 6th grade. Ms. Chang is a graduate of Pearl City High School and also graduated from LCC with a degree in Secretarial Science. Ms. Chang says, “I love to see our former students grow, move on and come back to visit, sometimes they help out as office monitors.” In her free time she loves to go shopping and spend time with her dog. Some of her favorite things are, Disney’s 101 Dalmations, Japanese food, and playing Tsum Tsum. Ms. Chang does everything in our front office from answering phone calls, to taking student lunch payments and taking care of our staff’s HR needs. She says that her mantra is, “Enjoy life day by day.” Ms. Chang’s co-workers say she is very helpful and will try to solve any problem and figure things out. We hope you enjoyed getting to know Ms. Chang. Mahalo! For all you do at our school. Be on the look out for our next featured staff member in our “Getting to know you” section of the Talk Story. WE WANT YOU, because HUI CAN DO IT! This has been an amazing, fun---filled year with great activities like Fall Fest, Family Holiday Night and a Movie Night where our entire Uka Ohana gathered and shared the joy. We, as the Executive Board of the Hui O’ Mililani Uka have been honored and proud to serve the parents and children of our school, raising funds for our classrooms, music, art and technology programs. We have seen so many members of our extended ohana participate by giving their time, money, and love to support our children. Now we are asking you to do so again, but in a very particular way. Several of our current Board members will be retiring at the end of this school year, after combined years of service and effort for our school. That means that our Executive Board is in dire need of assistance in order for the Hui O’ Mililani Uka to continue to thrive, grow and continue to provide the activities and programs that enrich our children’s lives. We are currently looking for Officers in ALL positions, bearing in mind that for our PTO to continue we MUST HAVE a President, Treasurer and Secretary, AT THE VERY MINIMUM. It is an investment of time, and your individual gifts when you participate on the Board, but it is so very worthwhile. You have direct impact on the decision making for our entire Hui (yes, everyone with a child here at Uka is an integral part of our Hui), and you are entrusted to listen to the voices of our ohana and represent them. You work as a team, and you make our children’s school experience better. So, consider this open invitation to submit your nomination for Treasurer, Secretary, President, Vice---President, or School Community Council Representative. The Hui Board Nomination Form will be sent home the first week in February and will also be available on our website to download at www.huiomililaniuka.org Help us keep our family activities going and our programs funded. Volunteer because WE WANT YOU, and HUI CAN DO IT! Mililani High School Visits Mililani Uka Elementary School The Mililani High School Choir performed for our students on Monday January 26, 2015. The whole school gathered in the cafeteria to be serenaded by the angelic voices of the MHS choir. Under the direction of Keane Ishii, the Choir sang many songs and gave our students motivational talks about pursuing their dreams. Many of the choir performers shared stories from their elementary school days and how they never gave up on their passion, like sports and singing. The choir members also talked about how students should pursue all of their dreams and become involved in many different activities. The inspiring story of one student who is an athlete (basketball captain) and a member of the chorus was compared to the story of Troy Bolton from Disney’s famous High School Musical. This comparison really helped our students relate. The passion for singing and bringing joy with their voices was apparent on the performers faces and through their beautiful song choices for our students. The Choir even sang Happy Birthday to several of our students who were asked to come forward and be recognized. Thank you to the Mililani High School Choir, instructor Keane Ishii and music director Kristi Higuchi. Mahalo!
