NSUUS Weekly Update - North Shore Unitarian Universalists

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
We are fortunate at NSUUS to have a group of dedicated individuals who
serve in leadership positions as committee members or chairpersons,
task force leaders and members, and coordinators of certain church
activities. Many of these good folks have served in their position for
much longer than the anticipated one to two years they originally signed
on for. While many are quite willing to continue fulfilling these roles,
some are now experiencing health, work, or family issues that demand
attention and limit their ability to devote the time and energy to volunteer
activities that they have in the past. They need relief. Though we are a
small congregation, we have many talents. Our success depends on each
of us using those talents while actively participating in the life of the
church, including its governance. If our only participation is to fill a seat
on the Sundays our favorite ministers are in the pulpit, then I fear our
continued existence is in jeopardy. I urge each of you to consider making
time to contribute your talent, voice, and energy toward guaranteeing the
success of our church community. Join a Committee; participate in a
Chalice Circle; attend Circle Suppers, attend board meetings on the last
Saturday of the month. The best way to know what is going on is to be
involved in what is going on. In most cases the required time
commitment is not great, particularly when shared among a group, but it
can be burdensome when carried only by the few. Get involved. We need
you!

Strap on your life vest. Step off of the solid rock of truth and into the nimble
boat of faith. We may get wet, but these nervous departures are a necessary
part of the journey to a better world. In this sermon, Meadville Lombard
student Sky Stewart will speak about the relationship between risk, the
willingness to make mistakes, and the life force within our living tradition.

MESSAGE from the NSUUS PRESIDENT
While I know we have to recover from some recent disagreements and
disappointments, I see a lot of optimism in our congregation. This past Sunday
Tamara talked about the services the Worship Committee is planning and got
feedback from you as to what you would like to see as the committee moves to
complete the Worship Calendar for the year. I am particularly excited about the
support we are getting from the UU ministers in the area. Most of our past service
ministers are continuing in our rotation and have signed on for as many or more
services than last year. There are also some new UU ministers in the area who
will be joining our rotation. We will be unique in enjoying such a wide variety of
professional ministers with their varying interests, viewpoints, and presentation
styles. How exciting is that?
This past Saturday your outgoing 2014 board hosted your incoming 2015 board in
a retreat to ease the transition from one leadership group to the other. We had an
ambitious agenda and, unfortunately, we were unable to complete all items as
thoroughly as we would like. However, the incoming board did begin to zero in on
some important goals for 2015. The most important of these are restoring
goodwill and a genuine sense of community in the congregation and finding ways
to foster better communications between the congregation and its leadership. The
new board will continue refining goals at its next meeting. As always, we welcome
your ideas and input.

Update from Family Promise
I talked with my contact at Family Promise today, Krista Carpenter, so I thought I
would send out an update. The first cycle of families, as of today, will start in
May - but that does not mean they will be with us the first month. Our first
families at NSUUS could be in May or as late as August, we will have to wait for
the preliminary schedule to come out to see where we fall in the rotation. Krista
assured me that the schedule will be flexible to accommodate other events at
host churches.
Family Promise is in the process of securing its day facility. It looks like it will be
located near the Southeast Hospital in Lacombe. We also discussed the showers
and she confirmed that the day center will have showers and laundry facilities. I
know there was some concern over the bathroom limitations at our community
center.
In a couple of weeks I will be sending out the list of needed items and volunteer
opportunities. I know everyone is excited to be involved with such a worthy cause
right here in St Tammany Parish. What a difference we will make in the lives of
struggling families! WOW!
In loving community,
Gwen

Community Event from the New Jim Crow Task Force
There will be a private showing of the movie “Selma” followed by a one hour town
hall panel discussion regarding our community expectations for St. Tammany
Parish on Thursday, 1/15/15 at 6:00 pm at the Slidell Grand 16 Theatre on Hwy
190. Tickets for the event are $25.00 and include a 1-year membership to
Louisiana United International (LUI). All profits will go to operate LUI’s Criminal
Justice Fund. Reserve tickets by calling 985-503-0626.
This is a great movie and a wonderful way to celebrate Martin Luther King Day.
The movie shows a “preacher from Boston” who was brutally killed during the
Selma march. He was the Rev. James Weeb, a UU minister. Viola, who was also
killed, was a UU member from Detroit. Let’s celebrate their commitment to social
justice as well as MLK Day.
Attending this event also renews your membership in Louisiana United
International headed by Belinda Parker Brown who has done so much to bring the
cause of criminal justice to the fore front.
See you at the movies! Bonnie Schmidt
