PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Happy New Year!!! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and are now
ready to input your CM students’ repertoire. :) Panel teachers remember to do this soon because the deadline is Jan. 15th. Also, you must
request Evaluation Day 2 for the Panel Regional Auditions at Saddleback
College as Marie Kaneta has instructed. Please read the CM info in this
newsletter for more details.
I want to thank Margery Burger for giving a wonderful lecture-demonstration on Beautiful Tone in Piano Playing at our November 2014
meeting. She is an amazing pedagogue who shared many of her piano
teaching secrets and helped motivate us to be better teachers. We
are very fortunate to have such a well-respected and highly successful
teacher in our branch!
Thanks go to Julie Nakamura for doing an outstanding job as the Theme
Festival chair. She made it look so simple and easy! In addition, Natalia
Gubenko (co-chair), Jamie Park (hospitality), and all the teachers that
assisted deserve a round of applause for their great work.

GENERAL REPERTOIRE INFORMATION
Piano and String teachers MUST USE 2012 PIANO SYLLABUS!!! You can order it online at mtac.org or call the State Office
at (800) 834-3340. You will find more information regarding repertoire on p.10-11 of New 2012 Piano Syllabus.
The repertoire is divided into four categories:
1. Baroque: approximately 1600-1750.
2. Classical: approximately 1750-1825.
3. Romantic and Impressionism: approximately 1825-1900.
4. 20th and 21st Century: Composers who have “come of age” in the 20th Century (Composers born approximately
1880 or after).
Composers Categories for Repertoire Selection are listed in Section 6 of Syllabus (p.161-169). Some composers are listed
in two different categories. These are transitional composers, and may be used for one of two different categories in Levels
3 and up.
MTAC OCC Branch Newsletter, January 2015
Page 4
Make sure that your student’s repertoire is at or above their CM level. One
piece must be chosen from their CM level repertoire list.
If a piece is listed under the composer list with a “not” it can not be used
for the Level unless the piece can be found in an Anthology for the Level
and the Anthology does not have a “not” for it. Then the piece may be
used. Golden rule: If in doubt about repertoire, do not use it! Current CM
Policy regarding Automatic Remain at Level (RAL) and Ineligible for Certificate (IC) is listed on p.18 of Syllabus.
If you have any piano repertoire questions or concerns, please contact Marina Sakach, [email protected].
