Newsletter di Febbraio
February 2015
Buon Anno 2015!
We wish you all a fun, healthy and prosperous New Year. For
us living here in New Zealand, the start of a new year usually
means extended holidays and amazing summer weather.
Even in February, although work and school are well and
truly back on the agenda, we feel still a little in “holiday
mode”, thanks to the long and sunny days, which make
winter still seem far away.
In Italy, the new year tends to be off to a sobering start, with
cold weather and short, grey days. Thankfully, in February
the days start to get noticeably longer, the weather warms
up a little and Italians celebrate two delightful events: San
Valentino (Valentine’s Day) and Carnevale, which runs for
weeks and is celebrated with a continual stream of
boisterous parties, parades and masquerades – not only in
Venice but in many other cities on our beautiful peninsula.
Finally I would like to take the opportunity to introduce
myself to you, I am Stefania and will be producing this
newsletter for the next months.

Corso Intensivo 2015
divertimento e l’amicizia. Come dallo stare bene insieme,
Buttiamo tutto all’

Author of the month
Andrea di Robilant, Italian journalist, historian and
author of Chasing the Rose, is coming to Wellington
direct from the Perth International Arts Festival for a
very special event.
In his 2008 biography (Lucia: A Venetian life in the
age of Napoleon) of the great Italian lady Lucia
Mocenigo, Andrea di Robilant described a pink rose
that grows wild on the family’s former country
estate. Could this unnamed rose possibly be the
long-lost Rose Bichonne, a China rose that
nineteenth-century growers cultivated but which
had apparently disappeared since?
In Chasing the Rose, he recounts the enthralling
search for the identity of this rose, taking us back in
time to Josephine Bonaparte and into some of the
most delightful rose gardens in Europe today.
Heritage Roses NZ Inc, in partnership with NZ Book
Council and Old St Paul’s, presents Andrea di
Robilant telling the story of his quest in Wellington,
Old St Paul’s on Thursday 26th February, 6.30pm.
Books on sale, book signing after the event.
VENUE: Old St Paul’s 34 Mulgrave Street
DATE: Thursday 26th February
TIME: 6.30pm
TICKETS: $22 ($20 HRNZI, NZRS members, Book Council
members) from bookcouncil.org.nz or call 04/801-5546.

Febbraio in Italia
Il Carnevale in Italia
In Italy Carnevale begins approximately nine weeks
before Easter, which this year coincides with the 1st
February, and finds its culmination in Martedí Grasso
(Fat Tuesday), the day before Ash Wednesday and
the beginning of the Lent. In fact, traditionally, the
period of Lent was marked by fasting and other pious
or penitential practices and during this time no
parties or other celebrations were held, and people
refrained from eating rich foods, such as meat, dairy,
fats and sugar. In the days before Lent, all rich food
and drink had to be disposed of. The consumption of
this, in a giant party that involved the whole
community, is thought to be the origin of Carnival.
While it forms an integral part of the Christian
calendar, particularly in Catholic regions, many
carnival traditions resemble those that date back to
pre-christian times. The Italian Carnival is sometimes
thought to be derived from the ancient Roman
festivals of Saturnalia and Bacchanali.
An important part of Italy’s carnival tradition,
especially at the world famous Carnevale di
Venezia, are the masks of Arlecchino,
Colombina and Pantalone - three popular
characters dating back to the 16th century
Venetian Commedia dell’Arte style of
theatre.
In the Italian tradition it is customary for adults and children to wear fancy dress themselves when going
to watch the procession of the Carri - carnival floats sporting artful depictions with an allegorical,
political and satirical meaning. Particularly famous is the spectacular Carri di Viareggio parade in
Viareggio, Tuscany.
A Carnevale ogni scherzo vale!

Radio Cartolina
Our traditional summer compilation is this year dedicated to Mina.
The iconic Italian singer is 74, and going from strength to strength.
She releases new compilations regularly, to great acclaim, so we
are now catching up with her production. This 4-programme series
is realized thanks to Mina-ologue extraordinaire Luca Manghi. Luca
realized a summer series on Mina almost 10 years ago, so there’s a
lot to talk about on more recent events and songs. The
programmes are aired on: 28 January, 11 February and 25
February. For details on the single programmes check the Dante
Christchurch Facebook page… or just listen and enjoy!

La parola del mese
GOLIARDICO
