TENNIS SENDS TWO TO STATE Angelina Ye qualified for the IHSA State Tennis tournament for the third time by winning the Sectional for the third time. Yet something was different, her teammate, Katherine Sullivan would also qualify for the big tournament. Sullivan had a great tournament, going 2-2. Ye finished in the top 12, earning All State recognition. This dynamic duo also were NI Big 12 Conference Champions. Ye won her 3rd NI Big 12 #1 Singles title, with Sullivan winning the #2 Singles title. The tennis team won the NI Big 12 regular season title, but more impressively has earned the IHSA Academic Achievement Award for the 5th consecutive season. All team member’s GPAs must average a 3.72 to earn this honor. SPARTAN ATHLETICS Page 2 FOOTBALL MAKE RUN TO THE QUARTERFINALS After coming off a Final Four appearance, the Spartans had the daunting task of replacing many senior starters. Three year starters Daniel Coovert, Dion Hooker and Brett Weaver made this transition smoother. The Spartans started out 2-1, with wins over North Lawndale and Crete-Monee and one point loss to Lincoln –Way West. The remainder of the season was a roller coaster ride, starting with a loss in the Castle Challenge to local rival DeKalb. Next was a decisive win over Ottawa. The Kaneland Knights were the next oppo- nent for Homecoming. For this occasion Sycamore went throwback with a purple jersey. (Front cover picture) The Spartan won 14-7. The next two weeks were losses to Yorkville and Morris. Sycamore would need a win in week 9 against Sterling to make the playoffs. The Spartans came through with a 21-18 victory over the Golden Warriors. In the playoffs, Sycamore defeated Chicago Westinghouse in the 1st Round. In the 2nd Round Sycamore toped St. Viator. The Spartans season came to a close with a quarterfinal loss to Geneseo. Dion Hooker takes a handoff from Brett Bemis. The season started with the Sycamore Invitational at Afton Forest Preserve. This is a 18 team event, bringing the top teams in Class 2A together. The Sycamore Boys put together a great race with a top 5 finish, the girls did well finishing in the top 10. At the NI Big 12 meet, the Sycamore Boys finished 4th, with Millburg placing 5th overall. The girls team finished in 9th place. At the IHSA Regional, the boys team advanced to the Sectional by placing 5th as a team. On the girls side, freshman Ella Holland advanced to the Sectional as an individual. At the Sectional, Millburg was the story here.” only one to advance to State, At State, Millburg placed 50th. BOYS SOCCER IMPROVES The Boys Soccer team started the season with a new coach, David Bachta. Bachta has previous experience as the coach at Boylan High School in Rockford. The team started the season with a 3rd place finish at the Earlville Invitational. During the regular season, the Spartans posted seven wins, which was a major improvement over the previous season. The signature win was a 4-1 victory over Sandwich. The Spartans went to the Hampshire Regional, where they squared off with conference rival Kaneland. The game was close throughout the 1st half, with Kaneland having a 1-0 lead. In the 2nd half, the Spartans started taking chances, which exposed their defense. Kaneland won the game 3-0. This season was a great transition year for the pro- gram. Volume 2, Issue 1 Page 3 GOLF SWINGS AWAY Youth was the word for the Sycamore Boys Golf team this season. The line up usually boasted 4-5 underclassmen. This did not deter the Spartans from having a quality season. The Spartans finished the regular season with a 6-3 dual record and several top 10 finishes at invitational. The highest finish of the season was 2nd at the Ottawa Invitational under extremely wet conditions. At the conference meet, the Spartans turned in a 4th place finish. This finish vaulted them to a 3rd place finish within their division of the conference. Martin Hurst, Trent Scott and Keegan White all finished in the top 20 at the tournament. As the Spartans moved on to the Marengo Regional, they looked to advance. The Spartans did not advance as a team, but Hurst and Scott advanced as individuals to the Sectional. The Sectional was hosted by Grayslake North at Stonewall Orchard. The weather during the day was miserable. Golf was delayed twice and the tournament was moved to a 2nd day so that everyone could finish. In the end Hurst and Scott missed qualifying for the State meet. The par 4 1st at the Sycamore Golf Club is the signature hole for the Spartans home course. SPARTAN TV GOING VIRAL Spartan TV was recently selected as an Elite School as part of the NFHS Network! This is the highest honor a school can earn. Spartan TV continues to rank as one of the best programs on the Network. During the fall season, students got the opportunity to work along side NIU Media Services to produce the Football Castle Challenge! They'll be returning to the Convocation Center in January to assist with the Basketball Castle Challenge. Our student continue to excel in bringing our viewers new way to see games! Find Spartan TV at: www.spartantv.org VOLLEYBALL HOLDS SERVE The volleyball season had some ups and some downs. The girls played with great fire and passion throughout the season. During the regular season, the Spartans opened with a victory over Plano. The Spartans proved to be tough on their home court with three straight wins over Rochelle, Morris and local rival DeKalb. The games away from Sycamore did not always go the way the Spartans needed. Several three set losses left the Spartans hovering around .500. As the Regionals approached, the Spartans found themselves the #4 seed in an extremely tough regional. They played St. Edward in the 1st Round of the Hampshire Regional. The Spartans dropped the 1st game but stormed back to take game two. The third and deciding game went the way of St. Edward. This summed up the Spartan season, a close hard fought three set match. SYCAMORE HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS Boys Bowling hosted an invitational to start the season, finishing 5th out of 12, with no seniors on the team, these keglers have a bright future. 427 Spartan Trail Sycamore, IL 60178 Girls Bowling hosted the annual Matt Clark Invitational, the ladies finished 5th out of 12 strong teams. They will be attending the Sterling Regional. They will be hosting the IHSA Regional the week of February 16. Boys Basketball started the year with a 4th place finish at the Strombom Tournament at SHS. They were also 3rd at the Marengo Tournament. They will be participating in the regional at Burlington Central. Orga niz ati on Competitive Dance has been having a great season, finishing 2nd in the ultra competitive NI Big 12 Conference. They will be competing in the DeKalb Sectional. HAIL SYCAMORE! Competitive Cheerleading has been competing with a very young team. They will be attending the DeKalb Sectional. www.syc427.org Wrestling has been rebuilding after several years of success at the state tournament. They finished 5th at the Mid State Classic at UW-Whitewater, then finished 13th out of 26 at the Sycamore Invitational. They will be at the Belvidere Regional. PETER JOHNSON HALL OF FAME CLASS INDUCTED The 2014 Hall of Fame Class gathered at Sycamore High School on September 12 and 13. Ralph Mecklenberg, Dr. Ron Feldman and the Girls’ Basketball teams from 2000 -2003 were all inducted. Mecklenberg was a three year varsity letter winner in basketball. He led the Spartans in scoring his junior and senior seasons, earning Little Seven All Conference Honors both seasons. His senior campaign he was also honorable mention All-State. Mecklenberg continued playing basketball at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois. In the winter of 2000 a streak would begin for the Girls’ Basketball program that would leave a lasting impression for years to come. Coach Curt Countryman and assistant Rob Majerus led the Girls’ Basketball team to 42 consecutive conference victories. For three consecutive seasons the team did not lose a conference game. The team members Katelyn Fogle, Heather Young, Melanie Smith, Angie Brown, Melissa Brown, Allison Schramer, Becky Smyth, Betsy Bratner, Kimi Wilson, Julie Strachan, Nicole Woodrick, Laura Roberts, Heather Wiora, Kelsi Countryman, Emily Whitfield, Emily Curtis, Kristin Wood, Jenna Wildenradt, Laura Wagley, Leslee Ball, Rachel Dargatz, Lauren Rasmussen, Kara Griffith, Krista Talley and Sarah Harbecke. Dr. Ron Feldman has been a fixture on the Sycamore sideline for 33 years. His contributions have greatly benefited the students at Sycamore High School. Approximately 300 football games and more that 2000 athletes have been under the watchful eye of Dr. Feldman. He has brought a new meaning to the word volunteer. Sycamore High School will always be indebted to Dr. Feldman.
