FOOTBALL MAKE RUN TO THE QUARTERFINALS
After coming off a Final Four appearance,
the Spartans had the daunting task of replacing many senior starters.
Three year starters Daniel Coovert, Dion
Hooker and Brett Weaver made this transition smoother.
The Spartans started out 2-1, with wins
over North Lawndale and Crete-Monee
and one point loss to Lincoln –Way West.
The remainder of the season was a roller
coaster ride, starting with a loss in the Castle Challenge to local rival DeKalb. Next
was a decisive win over Ottawa.
The Kaneland Knights were the next oppo-
nent for Homecoming. For this occasion
Sycamore went throwback with a purple
jersey. (Front cover picture) The Spartan
won 14-7.
The next two weeks were losses to
Yorkville and Morris. Sycamore would
need a win in week 9 against Sterling to
make the playoffs. The Spartans came
through with a 21-18 victory over the
Golden Warriors.
In the playoffs, Sycamore defeated Chicago Westinghouse in the 1st Round. In the
2nd Round Sycamore toped St. Viator. The
Spartans season came to a close with a
quarterfinal loss to Geneseo.

CROSS COUNTRY TAKES STRIDES
“To catch the reader's attention, place an interesting sentence or quote from the
The boys and girls cross country teams
had solid seasons, with Adam Millburg
qualifying for the State Meet in Peoria.
The season started with the Sycamore Invitational at Afton Forest Preserve. This is a
18 team event, bringing the top teams in
Class 2A together. The Sycamore Boys put
together a great race with a top 5 finish,
the girls did well finishing in the top 10.
At the NI Big 12 meet, the Sycamore Boys
finished 4th, with Millburg placing 5th
overall. The girls team finished in 9th
place.
At the IHSA Regional, the boys team advanced to the Sectional by placing 5th as a
team. On the girls side, freshman Ella Holland advanced to the Sectional as an individual. At the Sectional, Millburg was the
story here.”
only one to advance to State, At State, Millburg placed 50th.
BOYS SOCCER IMPROVES
The Boys Soccer team started the season
with a new coach, David Bachta. Bachta
has previous experience as the coach at
Boylan High School in Rockford.
The team started the season with a 3rd
place finish at the Earlville Invitational.
During the regular season, the Spartans
posted seven wins, which was a major
improvement over the previous season.
The signature win was a 4-1 victory over
Sandwich.
The Spartans went to the Hampshire Regional, where they squared off with conference rival Kaneland.
The game was close throughout the 1st
half, with Kaneland having a 1-0 lead. In
the 2nd half, the Spartans started taking
chances, which exposed their defense.
Kaneland won the game 3-0. This season
was a great transition year for the pro-
gram.

GOLF SWINGS AWAY
Youth was the word for the Sycamore Boys
Golf team this season. The line up usually
boasted 4-5 underclassmen. This did not
deter the Spartans from having a quality
season.
The Spartans finished the regular season
with a 6-3 dual record and several top 10
finishes at invitational. The highest finish
of the season was 2nd at the Ottawa Invitational under extremely wet conditions.
At the conference meet, the Spartans
turned in a 4th place finish. This finish
vaulted them to a 3rd place finish within
their division of the conference. Martin
Hurst, Trent Scott and Keegan White all
finished in the top 20 at the tournament.
As the Spartans moved on to the Marengo
Regional, they looked to advance. The
Spartans did not advance as a team, but
Hurst and Scott advanced as individuals to
the Sectional.
The Sectional was hosted by Grayslake
North at Stonewall Orchard. The weather
during the day was miserable. Golf was
delayed twice and the tournament was
moved to a 2nd day so that everyone could
finish. In the end Hurst and Scott missed
qualifying for the State meet.
The par 4 1st at the Sycamore Golf Club
is the signature hole for the Spartans
home course.

VOLLEYBALL HOLDS SERVE
The volleyball season had some ups and
some downs. The girls played with great
fire and passion throughout the season.
During the regular season, the Spartans
opened with a victory over Plano. The
Spartans proved to be tough on their home
court with three straight wins over Rochelle, Morris and local rival DeKalb. The
games away from Sycamore did not always
go the way the Spartans needed. Several
three set losses left the Spartans hovering
around .500.
As the Regionals approached, the Spartans
found themselves the #4 seed in an extremely tough regional. They played St.
Edward in the 1st Round of the Hampshire
Regional. The Spartans dropped the 1st
game but stormed back to take game two.
The third and deciding game went the way
of St. Edward. This summed up the Spartan season, a close hard fought three set
match.
Shea McCoy and Mattie Hayes go for the
block!
