Welcome
We are blessed with lots of sunny days during our Suffolk winters but even so there are
times when the skies are dark and there is every excuse to stay indoors and take refuge
in a good book. Whether it’s an unputdownable thriller, a beautifully illustrated guide to
British gardens, a dip into the world of Manga or an ebook that helps us understand an
historical event there is undeniable pleasure within their pages. On page 15 we have a book
review from a local group that have been reading a novel that languished in the remainder
warehouses until it was recently rediscovered by European readers and described as “.. a
perfect novel, so well told and beautifully written, so deeply moving, that it takes your breath
away.” If you are thinking that you would also like to join a book group take a look at the
information about activities at Woodbridge Library and details of their own book and film
related events.
This month we also start a series of profiles of Woodbridge people that are central to the success of the town. Read on to find out what
the Proper Officer of the Town Council does and her favourite Suffolk pastimes. If you know of someone from the town who would
make a good subject for the series do let us know.
If you are one of the many carers in the town who started out ‘keeping an eye’ on a vulnerable relative or friend but now realise that all
your time and energy is taken up with their medical and daily needs you may find that the local charity Suffolk Family Carers can help.
Set up 25 years ago they know that carers often don’t have time for their own health or wellbeing and that in order to keep going they
do need to keep their own batteries charged. Things can become even more worrying and stressful when the person they are caring for
is nearing the end of their life, which is why Suffolk Family Carers are now working with hospice colleagues to offer help and support. To
find out more turn to page 19.
But perhaps you have been a carer and now find that you now have a bit more free time? Why not put your valuable experience to good
use by becoming a volunteer for Healthwatch, the local independent consumer champion which has real influence over decisions
about health and care services in the county.
If after all those suggestions you still have a free moment turn to our event pages. From fashion shows to music nights, romantic meals
and an outdoor alternative to a traditional Valentine’s Day our listings cover everything you need to know to keep in touch with the
town and all it has to offer. If you want to add anything to future events pages do e mail them to me and we will do our best to include
them next time.

Local RNLI News
The Woodbridge and District branch of the RNLI raised
£14,820.88 for the charity in 2014. Tony Wilman, Chairman of the
branch said “We are really pleased with the amount of money
collected in what was one of our most successful and busiest
years to date. I would like to thank everyone who gave their time
and who donated. I hope that in 2015 we can continue to raise
money and awareness of the RNLI and the exceptional work they
do.”
In 2014 the branch organised two key fundraising events. To
mark the 125th anniversary of Jerome K Jerome’s famous book
“3 Men in a Boat” six volunteers rowed 140 miles from Lechlade
to Richmond. In September they also undertook the 3 Rivers
Row, rowing the 34ft William Riley lifeboat 48 miles on the Stour,
Orwell and Deben rivers. The William Riley was involved in the
rescue of the Rohilla 100 years ago and featured on the television
programme Coast. These two events brought in over £5,000. We
are very grateful for the support we received from the Felixstowe
branch who helped us with this challenging event.
We held several collections throughout the year at Tesco,
Wyevale, Budgens and at our Flag Day in Woodbridge. Other
events included a cheese & wine evening and a quiz with fish
and chip supper at the Deben Yacht Club. Woodbridge Cruising
Club also held a quiz and supper to raise money for the RNLI. We
are very grateful to several sponsors who kindly donated draw
prizes for these events. Corporate donations were also up this
year thanks to support from Waitrose, MSC and Jacksons Civil
Engineering.
Caroline Wilman of the RNLI Woodbridge branch said “I would
like to thank Bettaprint for generously printing our flyers free of
charge, I have no doubt that the extra publicity these generated
helped us to raise the profile of our events. I would also like to
thank all the pubs and stores who have RNLI “lifeboats” on their
bars and counters.”
The branch AGM will be held on Tuesday 10 March at the Bell
and Steelyard in Woodbridge at 7:30pm. It is an open meeting
so please come along if you can. We are always looking for new
volunteers, opportunities and ideas to raise the profile of the
RNLI locally.
You can find more details about the branch, programme of
events and contact details at http://www.rnliwoodbridge.org.uk/
or contact Tony Wilman on 01394 387173 for more information.

Eastern Counties 1 League Match Report
Saturday, 20 December 2014
reflecting the play, and ‘Wold were ahead 27-0.
‘Twas five days before Christmas, and Woodbridge Warriors drove
up the coast to Southwold hoping for some festive cheer and a
win to kick-start their, so far indifferent, season – winning one of
twelve. Their hosts were also looking to start the festive season
with a win and continue their run of 11 straight wins so far.
The second half was much the same as the first, with the Warriors
playing some good honest rugby, but never being able to breach
the solid Southwold defence. Due to a few more Warrior injuries
the scrum resorted to uncontested, never any fun for proper
forwards.
The Warriors arrived to be greeted with the normal playing
conditions expected at ‘Wold at this time of year; a heavy damp
pitch, a very cold brisk wind (unusually coming from the land
rather than the sea) and blazing sunshine (not so common).
The final whistle went as the darkness fell across the fields, much
to the delight of both players and a sizeable and knowledgeable
crowd, as the wind had become stronger and the temperature
had dropped. ‘Wold were deservedly the victors, winning the
match 61-0. In true rugby fashion, both sides applauded each
other’s efforts and thanked the home and travelling fans.
Southwold started off the way they intended to carry on and
quickly scored two unconverted tries. The Warriors recovered
from the quick onslaught, but try as they might, ‘Wold always
seemed to have an extra man and exploited the situation when
the Warriors made errors.
The first half finally came to an end, extra time being added
due to some lengthy injury stops, (all Warrior players), the score
Both teams now go into deserved breaks and hopefully 2015 will
bring both clubs much success.

LOCAL PROFILE
Tell us about being Town Clerk
It’s the best job in Woodbridge!
I work in the historic Shire Hall on Market Hill on a daily basis
and manage other historic buildings in the town and open
spaces. My role is the Proper Officer of Woodbridge Town
Council and I work with the Mayor of the town and the 15 other
councillors who represent the four wards of Woodbridge.
In fact the Town Council owns, leases or has an interest in
quite a range of land or property including the allotments
adjacent to The Avenue, Broomheath, Elmhurst Park (including
associated walkways, play area public conveniences and part
of Elmhurst Walk), Fen Meadow & play area, Fitzgerald Green
Sun Lane, Kingston Field & play area, Kingston Pavilion and
adjacent Disabled Public Convenience, Shire Hall & Market
Square, Theatre Street Public Conveniences, The Quaker
Burial Ground at Turn Lane, Tide Mill Way Roadway (part
of), War Memorial and Garden of Remembrance on Market
Hill, Woodbridge Art Club building, Woodbridge Market,
Woodbridge Tennis Courts, Woodbridge Tide Mill, 20ft section
of the River Deben & Town Quay (adjacent to the Tide Mill).
What did you do previously?
I have a long history of working in Local Government.
Does the job give you an insight into the town’s affairs?
Absolutely, the town councillors meet weekly and there
are a number of committees, sub-committees and working
groups dealing with all aspects of the town ranging from town
amenities, through to finance, planning and highways.
The Council met on 77 occasions in 2014 and I clerked those
meetings.
Is there anything that particularly stands out during your
work with the council?
I was involved in planning the Army Freedom Parades, the
Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations and the Olympic Torch
celebrations.
Also, I am always delighted when a project is finalised, for
example when we finished the recent refurbishment of the
Woodbridge Garden of Remembrance. In partnership with the
Rotary Club of Woodbridge, the Woodbridge Museum and the
Woodbridge British Legion a £25,000 project was undertaken to
enlarge the area and make it more accessible to everyone.
We were very fortunate to have Lord Tollemache, K St J, JP to
rededicate the Garden on 11th November.
What frustrates you about the role?
How quick people are to be rude and abusive to those who
work in local government. We are genuinely trying to do a
good job for our towns and parishes.
You were previously President for Woodbridge Rotary Club,
how was that?
I have been in Rotary since 1998 and was delighted to be the
first Lady President of the Club in 2011/12. A highlight of my
year was being present at the 60th Annual Carol service on
Market Hill. My parents used to take me and my siblings to this

event during our childhood (although I have to stress that I’m
not yet 60!) and I took my own daughter during her childhood.
It was an absolute pleasure to be there on this special
occasion.
You seem like a person who gets involved in the
community. What other local groups and organisations do
you take part in?
I used to belong to the Inner Wheel Club of Woodbridge but
due to pressure of work had to give that membership up. I’m
also governor of Hollesley Primary School and Farlingaye High
School when my daughter was growing up.
I’m currently a Trustee of the Woodbridge Soldiers Fund linked
to the 23 Engineer Regiment (Air Assault) at Rock Barracks,
Sutton Heath.
Have you always lived in the area?
I’m a Suffolk girl and grew up in Woodbridge
What do you love about the town?
What’s not to love about Woodbridge when there’s so much
going on here? We have the lovely River Deben and riverside
walks, many inviting pubs and restaurants, a cinema and a
theatre. Why go anywhere else?
What would you change if you could?
One thing I would change is to properly divert the traffic away
from the town centre to stop the horrendous traffic queues
in the summer and to make the Thoroughfare a proper
pedestrian area.
Could you let us in on your favourite Suffolk things?
My favourite things are the Woodbridge Vintage Markets (not to
be missed), afternoon films at the Riverside Cinema, enjoying
the special atmosphere at Shingle Street and Aspall Perronelles

Boccia comes to Suffolk Coastal
Leading Lives have been working in partnership with Places
for People at Leiston Leisure Centre to launch Boccia, a ball
based Paralympic sport. Two sides compete as individuals,
pairs or as a team of three and points are accumulated over
the course of a match to find a winner.
A ball can be rolled, thrown or kicked. If a player is unable
to throw or kick the ball, they can use a ramp. If players are
unable to release the ball with their hands, they can use
assistive devices.
Boccia Starting January 2015 at Leiston LeisureCentre Costs £2 per session ‘Pay and Play sessions’ No booking required *no charge for support workers and/or one family member With the help of Sam Barton, Community Engagement
Manager for Places for People, Leiston Town Council and
Sarah Shinnie, Active Communities Officer for Suffolk Coastal
funding has been achieved for specialist Boccia equipment.
This inclusive coached session of Boccia is as aimed at people over 12 years old. We welcome beginners and those who have played before. There will be a qualified Boccia Coach. Marion Walker, one of the sports coaching team at Leiston
Leisure Centre is going to be running the sessions and
she has done her training for Boccia with the England
Paralympics teams coach in Essex.
The sessions will be at the Leiston Leisure Centre on a
Wednesdays from 4.30pm – 5.30pm.
Leiston Leisure Centre, Red House Lane, Leiston IP16 4LS 01728 830364 This is a game that all abilities will be able to play.
Individuals and people that need support will be welcomed,
sessions started on the 14 January.

Havergate Island RSPB Reserve
Everyone who didn’t have an opportunity to visit Havergate this year will love to hear that the island
and its wildlife have recovered quite well from the dreadful flooding a year ago. Our wild brown
hares are enjoying the island life again and we even saw some leverets whizzing around in summer!
Over the coming winter months, the still damaged infrastructure will be repaired or replaced. We
will get a new hide, a new warden’s accommodation hut and a state of the art composting toilet!
With everything being in good and new shape early next year, we have decided to roll out our full
events programme again in 2015 and I am delighted to write that the very popular Hare events in
March, the Photography Days and the Big Wild Sleepout in August are back on the list.
Our (regular) boat trips on the first Saturday of the month are now running from August to April only,
to avoid disturbance for the breeding birds on the island. (This means we will no longer offer trips
between May and the end of July.)
It is always highly recommended to book the Havergate events well in advance because the capacity
of the boat is limited. The detailed events list, prices (we will have a new price structure with a
reduced price for children from April) and all booking contacts can be found on www.rspb.org.uk/

Horticultural Society
learns about Ladybird
Nurseries
The enthusiastic members of Woodbridge Horticultural
Society gathered for the first meeting of the New Year to
hear from Bob Booker of Ladybird Nurseries at Snape. He
talked about the history of the nursery and gave some
topical advice about growing plants from seed.
Bob’s parents Arthur and Betty moved from a land
settlement holding in Lincolnshire in 1960 to grow
horticultural crops at Snape. Market forces have moved
the nursery’s production away from tomatoes, courgettes
and chrysanthemums to plants in containers, bedding and
hanging baskets.
The members were advised by Bob to grow their tomatoes
in 10L pots rather than in grow bags although the bags are
a useful source of compost to fill the pots. Planting out
tomatoes should be delayed until 50% of the flowers on
the first truss are open. Effective pollination is essential for
a good crop and gently shaking the plant around mid-day
was one of Bob’s excellent tips.
Members’ skills were tested when Bob handed round
samples of seeds for identification, this proved a little
difficult with Lobelia seed, which looked more like dust
than seed. For effective seed germination, Bob advised
that the gardener should learn about the ideal conditions
for each plant. Some seeds such as Cyclamen and Nemesia
need to germinate in the dark while others, such as Bizzy
Lizzy, prefer some light; others respond to a warm airing
cupboard while lettuce needs to be on the cool side.
Ideally seeds should be stored in a dry refrigerator with a
temperature of 3-5C.
A lively question and answer session followed which ranged
from Blossom End Rot to how to stop ants on your runner
beans.
We look forward to our AGM on 12 February, 7.30pm at
Woodbridge Community Hall when there will also be an
auction of garden items followed by a talk by Richard Ford
‘A Tribute to Hardy Perennials’ and a photo competition ‘My
Winter Garden’.
A Good Read
A local men’s book group have been reading Stoner by
John Williams. Here one of its members, Jeremy Wagg,
reviews a novel that fell from favour after its publication
in 1965 but is now gaining in popularity amongst
European readers.
The blurb on the back cover of this novel is modest and
not very encouraging, the central character is described a
teacher who ‘marries the wrong woman, leads a quiet life
and is quickly forgotten after his death’. However, once
inside its pages we all found it an enjoyable read and a
novel worthy of an evening’s discussion.
We debated as to whether or not we liked Stoner the man?
For some the answer was yes but perhaps more in the
sense of respecting him for the way he managed his life.
One of his core qualities is his dogged stoical acceptance
of all things in life as it comes at him which is uncommon
in our own generation and that of our children, but was
more common in the first half of the 20th Century. Also
he has an instinctive understanding that literature is
important and by teaching students about it you are
enriching their lives. There are some beautiful passages
in the first quarter of the book when Sloane, Stoner’s own
teacher, is explaining to him that he too will go on to be a
teacher because of his quiet dedication to literature and to
research.
The book should strike a nerve with most people as it
tells of the small conflicts, defeats and victories we all
encounter in our lives that nobody else will ever know
about, but which leave an immense impact on the life of
the individual concerned.
The question that split our group was whether we
regarded Stoner as a hero or anti-hero. I fell on the side
of anti-hero, as Stoner’s tolerance of his wife’s irrational
behaviour reached an unacceptable point when she
started to abuse their daughter Grace, who subsequently
abandoned her child to her dead husband’s parents and
eventually became an alcoholic. I could forgive Stoner his
inaction in resolving conflict in other areas of his life, but
could not forgive him for betraying his daughter.
Others were impressed by his ability to endure everything
life threw at him as long as he was able to continue
teaching at the university, and he did prove the adage
“revenge is a dish best served cold” when he found a way
to teach what he wanted rather than the schedule forced
on him by his department head and long term adversary,
Holly Lomax.
Whichever way you end up viewing the main character,
you will certainly find yourself questioning your own life in
the light of his experiences, and for that reason alone, this
is a book well worth reading.

Woodbridge Cruising Club
Woodbridge Cruising Club social events have continued with
a series of themed suppers including a ‘Burns’ night with a
disrespectful address to the haggis. Future events are planned
including an Italian night, a Chinese night and a 60’s/70’s night.
Dress styles can reflect the themes if desired but we suspect the
flared trousers of the 70’s will now probably fit better if turned
upside down! A few younger members have complained that
they were not alive in the 60’s so some 80’s music will also be
included.
Sea to Holland and across the Channel to France as well as
excursions into the local rivers. By popular request Graham Bush
will be holding another Navigation Refresher Course on Saturday

the club. There are also a limited number of spaces available on
the DSC radio course which will be held the following Saturday.
Contact us via the website www.woodbridgecruisingclub.org or

The club is keeping a close eye on the Deben Action Plan which
at present is only in draft form but it is wide ranging and is bound
to have an impact upon use of the river. There is no doubt that
this is an important issue if we are to preserve the river we all
love, further details are available on the web.
The club’s first proper cruise of the season will be the traditional
‘Deben Discovery’ which involves getting out onto the river and
exploring the entrance between Bawdesy and Felixstowe Ferry
to establish what effects the winter gales have had.
Plans are well advanced for the remainder of the cruise programme for this summer. These include trips across the North

Are you a carer?
Suffolk Family Carers is a local charity that provides information, support and guidance to family carers. We have been offering our
services for over 25 years and one of the things we have learnt during that time is that people caring for another person at home,
perhaps a family member or friend, don’t usually see themselves as a family carer, they just see it as part of being husband, wife,
father, mother, daughter, son or friend. Because of this, it becomes so easy to forget the importance of your own health and wellbeing as all of your physical and emotional effort and energy is spent on looking after someone else and perhaps, others who may
be involved such as siblings. You may feel that your own needs do not matter at this time, but in order to provide care and support
you do need to keep your own batteries charged.
In 2015 Suffolk Family Carers will be working with hospice colleagues to offer an information and support programme for those
people caring for someone nearing the end of their life. There will be a series of five informal sessions that offer information and
an opportunity to reflect and gain support from others in a similar situation. The programme will run around the county starting in
late January.
If you would like to find out more or book a free place call Carly on 01473 835420 or e mail [email protected]
Healthwatch seeks local volunteers
Healthwatch Suffolk is the local independent consumer champion created to gather and represent the views of the public. It gives
people in Suffolk real influence over decisions about health and care services in the county.
Its representatives can enter and view (announced or unannounced) any premises where publicly funded care is provided to
people in Suffolk with the exception of services where care is provided to people under the age of 18. Generally this applies to
residential homes, nursing homes, GP practices and hospital wards.
Healthwatch Suffolk is now seeking to build its team of local volunteers to visit services on its behalf to observe and assess
provision, collect users views and make recommendations to those who run and pay for the services.
If you have good judgment and a passion for health and care, this could be your chance to help make a difference to the delivery
of care in Suffolk. Service providers must have regard to the views, reports and recommendations of Healthwatch Suffolk, they
have to respond explaining what action they will take, or why they are not taking action.
More information and details of how to apply are available on the Healthwatch Suffolk website (www.healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk).
Alternatively please call Amanda Stevens on 01449 703949 who will be able to talk to you about what it means to be an authorised
representative for Healthwatch Suffolk and provide more information about how to apply.
Love birds?
This year’s Bawdsey Bird Club public talk will be given by birdwatching tour guide Alex
Bass. Alex runs the birdwatching tours for Coastal Leisure Learning and a wildlife/
bio-diversity based course for WEA branches in East Anglia.
The talk will take the audience on an exploration of heathland and woodland sites in
Suffolk including Westleton & Dunwich Heath, Cavenham Heath, Theberton Woods
and Greyfriars Wood. Alex will illustrate the vast diversity of flora & fauna that can be
found on these sites including a range of birds, mammals, butterflies and plants. These
include Nightjar, Stone Curlew, Crossbill, Purple Emperor, Red Deer and a variety of
heather species.
Everyone is invited to an interesting and informative evening at Sutton Memorial Hall,
Old Post Office Lane, Sutton, Nr Woodbridge IP12 3JQ on Saturday March 7 at 7.30pm.
Light refreshments will be available during the interval.
Admission: adults £3.00, under 18’s £1.00. There is ample free parking.

Library News
‘Booked Out’ is the book and film review show hosted by
Woodbridge Library staff. It will be available on the Suffolk
Libraries’ website and SoundCloud. Last month everyone
was talking about the world of graphic novels. This month
‘Love Is in the Air’ as we’ll be talking about everything from
chick lit to ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’.
This month’s ArtLib display is Botanical Art by Janet
Blinkworth. Janet has always had an interest in art
and after winding down her career in music, more time
became available for painting. Plants and nature’s colours
fascinated her so she decided to further this interest and
specialise in botanical art. Watercolour is her preferred
medium as transparency and detail is essential in botanical
painting.
Janet has attended courses in botanical art and in 2009
gained a Silver Medal at the Royal Horticultural Society
Exhibition at the NEC Birmingham. She has taken classes
at the Woodbridge Art Club with whom she exhibits and is
a member of the Iceni Botanical Artists, based in Norfolk.
Some of her paintings have gone as far afield as Canada
and South Africa.
If you’d like to get involved, take part in the library review
show and talk about a book or film you’ve borrowed
or have a suggestion for a future theme, please contact
the library on 01394 446510 or leave a comment on our
Facebook page.
Woodbridge Museum Afternoon Talks
The first museum talk of 1915 was held on a gloomy January afternoon and that, combined with it being earlier in the month
than is usual, meant that we had a lower audience than expected. This was a shame as those who could not get there missed a
fascinating talk about Leiston Film Theatre which celebrated its 100th birthday last year. Wayne Burns, the manager of the Theatre,
told us about its history and introduced us to the characters involved over the century. A natural raconteur, he told us about its
ups and down from its early popularity, through near closure and dereliction to its current success as an independent locally run
cinema. A fascinating talk and enjoyable nostalgia trip for those who were there.
The next Museum Day School will be held on Saturday 28th March at St Mary’s church. “Restoration to Revolution” will chart the
events of the second part of the Seventeenth century. There are still some places available. For further details on Museum events
contact Anne Merrett; 01394 3835572.
You Won’t Believe Your Ears!
Do you struggle to follow conversation? Do people say you have the TV too loud? Do you always have to say ‘pardon’? Do peoples
voices sound muffled? These are all common signs of hearing loss, which affects around one in six adults in the UK.
One local company is now offering people the opportunity to trial a new hearing aid, which, in certain listening situations, allows
the hearing impaired to hear better than those with normal hearing.
The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at Framfield House Surgery in Woodbridge, was the first company in the country to have
access to the new hearing aid platform called binax, designed and produced by global technology company Siemens.
Karen Finch, Woodbridge Audiologist for The Hearing Care Centre, couldn’t hide her excitement about
being able to offer the new technology:
“Hearing aids have developed so much recently that we are now able to make claims such as ‘better
hearing than a normal person in certain situations’. This would have been unthinkable ten years
ago.”
If you have a hearing loss and have yet to seek help, The Hearing Care Centre has organised a local
event that you can attend to have your hearing tested free of charge (saving £20). An open day will
take place on Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 February (9am-5pm) at Framfield House Surgery
in Woodbridge, appointments must be booked in advance. To book a hearing test and to find out
