AM CIRCLE
NEWSLETTER
Let’s give the 2015 Board support as was done so
well by the membership to the 2014 Board.
2015 is and will be a banner year for Chi Am
Circle. For over a year, the majority of Chi Am
members have been working diligently on our 50th
Anniversary event – A Golden Legacy. There are
few service organizations that can claim to have
an active membership that has survived for 50
years by volunteerism – with not one paid staff in
the history of Chi Am Circle.
For the end of 2014, Linda Toda and her
committee presented a memorable and well
planned Chi Am Circle Installation Luncheon at
Ming’s Restaurant in Palo Alto. At the Luncheon,
the 2014 Board received appreciation from the
membership for all the dedicated work that was
done during the year. The 2014 Board was
recognized for its leadership, and we especially
thank Paulette Curby for so ably serving two
organized and efficient years for Chi Am Circle.
Sylvia will be remaining on the Board as CoPresident serving her second year of a two year
term. Teddy Sue will step up to the plate to
become one of the 2015 Co-Presidents.
During the Installation Luncheon, the traditional
candlelight ceremony was performed with each of
The day after the Installation Luncheon, there was a
dinner meeting of both 2014 and 2015 Boards.
Besides finishing the official business of the year,
there was time set aside when the 2014 Board
passed the responsibilities of their respective offices
to the 2015 officers. In an effort to get better
acquainted, there was even a time set aside for Board
members to share some little known facts about
themselves. One fact that is noteworthy is that there
is a member who has served on the Chi Am Board for
16 consecutive years. She is none other than Linda
Toda. What a true member she is!
There are many events that are being planned by our
Program Co-Chairs, Helen Yamauchi and Grace
Haig. This collaboration should see some interesting
activities planned for 2015. Check the newsletter for
more information.
The Membership Tea is just around the corner; it will
be Sunday, January 18th from 1-3 p.m. It is chaired
by First Vice President, Maria Lu, and she and her
committee which is the incoming 2015 Board
members, invite the membership and their friends to
enjoy a delightful array of sandwiches, hors d’oerves,
and desserts. We welcome you to bring your friends
and those who would be interested in becoming new
members of Chi Am Circle. All details will be in this
newsletter.
We are excited about 2015 and hope that you will feel
the same way. 2015 will be a year to remember!
Warmest regards,
Sylvia and Teddy

It is very hard for this senior citizen to believe that 2015 will make FIFTY SHADES OF CHI AM
FELLOWSHIP YEARS that so many of us have been blessed to be a part of. And this year is to be our
CELEBRATION YEAR.
So thanks to the efforts of over 40 members led by eight very dedicated chairwomen, you Chi Am Circle
sisters will join in a shining example of what this club is all about -- friends working together for a common
cause to serve community needs – A GOLDEN LEGACY fundraising benefit luncheon to celebrate our
club’s 50 years of community service.
MARCH 21 IS THE DAY –FAIRMONT SAN JOSE IS THE PLACE – a spectacular fashion show featuring
our own members, family or friends, combined with volunteers from other community organizations and
businesses is the entertainment – and the most important fact of the event is that all of the net proceeds
will go towards women’s causes and education.
NOW IS THE TIME TO BE SURE YOU WILL BE A PART OF THE EXCITING DAY. Shhhh news from my
spy tells me that over HALF of the Imperial Ballroom’s capacity of 900 seats have been sold already. So
make sure your first New Year’s RESOLUTION is to get your lunch reservations and checks in right away.
Call up all of your favorite people so you can come together. We promise —this will be the highlight event
of the year.
Not only can you all cheer fellow Chi Am friends on the runway, but you’ll have the chance to ooh and aah
at the cute lil children and grandchildren of fellow members too. You’ll see the latest fashions from the new
Bloomingdale’s Stanford store on our over 40 men and women models, as well as savvy Silicon Valley
styles from Stuarts of Los Altos. You’ll see Kristi Yamaguchi modeling her latest Tsu-Ya fashion wear too.
You can cheer local community heroes whom Chi Am will honor that day – Saratoga City Council member
Emily Lo and Netgear CEO Patrick Lo, Chef Restaurateur Lawrence Chu, and Jefferson Awardee for
Community Service and Ascend Northern California President Anna Mok.
Chi Am Circle has always traditionally been well known for its efficient, energetic and community committed
women who have presented THE best fashion show events for the past several decades. GOLDEN
LEGACY will be befitting of 50 years of accomplishments – so it will be THE BEST!
We want every Chi Am Circle member there to proudly stand together and show the community where our
hearts and spirits are—and have a wonderful time while making a difference for women in need and
student recognition. THE TIME IS NOW!! Call a chairwoman and tell them you want to get in on the fun
and fundraising. Get the Visa card out and go to our website and buy those seats before they are all gone
for yourself, your neighbor, and your families.
We’re all together committed to celebrate 50 years as no other club can. WE NEED EVERYONE TO JOIN
THIS CHALLENGE.
CHEER ON CHI AM!

Have you been a member of
Chi Am Circle since its
inception in 1965
As you all know, Chi Am was conceived by ten women in 1965. Those members are the ladies
who attended the first Club meeting. There are other current members who joined Chi Am in
1965, nearly 50 years ago, and are still active members today. As we near our 50th anniversary
in 2015, we would like to recognize these “Charter” members as they have been an integral part
of our organization.
Currently, Aimee Leung, Pearl Lee, Carolyn Jow, Barbara Why, Helen Chew and Gloria Hom fall
into our Charter member category. If you are one of these early members, would you please
contact Sylvia Eng.

Here’s to another year, another Installation, another venue. Chi Am’s Installation 2014 took place at
Ming’s in Palo Alto on a beautiful December 6, 2014 for the last time on the premises of a landmark
destination under owner Vicky Ching.
Seventy-one participants were present to
enjoy an eight-course banquet featuring roast
duck; hear soprano soloist Nicole Hong
of Gunn High School sing a collection of
songs including Puccini’s “O mio
babbino caro”; witness the candle ceremony
for the new board with new floating
tealight candles; meet the guests (thirteen);
win some doors prizes like the Santa/
reindeer/snowman swizzle sticks; and take
home some folded play money outfits
for holiday ornaments and for good luck
(over seven fashions representing Asian
cultures were available).
The outgoing
board went home with farewell gifts
such as the warm luxurious shawls of glitter
yarn, and carved animal salad servers
from the talented artisans of East Africa. Not to be forgotten are speakers Paulette Curby, Sylvia Eng,
Teddy Sue, Zeny Seid, Ellen Lau who shared the upcoming plans for the year, including Fashion Show
2015. Thank you to Wanda Ching for arranging the menu; Nicole Hong for performing; Beverly
Rubin for being mistress of ceremonies; Mae Ding for registration; Lari Yamaguchi for name tags; Sally
Hsia Broberg for raffle prizes; Frances Gin for place settings; Maelene Wong for shopping; Ruth Wong
for table setup assistance; Violet Lee for candle ceremony; Sharon Lai for handling payments; Helen
Yamauchi for photographs. Submitted by Linda Chew Toda, 2014 Installation chairperson
