Today we welcome Maidstone Rugby Football Club. This local derby has been played at junior level
& senior levels for many seasons and Maidstone are the main contender for automatic promotion into
London Division 1 next season as they sit top of our League, London Division 2 and deservedly so.
Our visitors dipped out on promotion last season to champions Charlton Park who have held their own
in London 1. Gosport & Fareham RFC overcame Maidstone in the play-off last season & Gosport &
Fareham are performing well in London 1 too.
Maidstone Club Captain, Mr Ben Williams has pointed to some of the elements that have made
Maidstone the force they currently are & this includes; “A change of coaches, game plan and players in
an even more competitive league. It’s some challenge for the First Team this year to go one better than
the last campaign. However I total faith in what we can achieve as a squad of players and as a club”.
Maidstone have plans to go up & stay up, we wish them well.
Our visitors have progressed to the Kent Cup semi-final by winning against Westcombe Park last week.
Medway’s 1st xv hosted Tonbridge Juddian’s in the same competition & we held tj’s to within 3 points for
65 minutes & then Tj’s scored their points at the last to move forward. Maidstone also compete further
in the Intermediate Cup (they knocked us out at the Mote)!
Medway have enjoyed a good run of League results lately and we will have to be at our very best to take
any points today. With Sevenoaks performing well & Tunbridge Wells still in the top four, we could really
do with some of the available League points today. Our Extra 1st xv, Development xv & Development
Extra xv all play today & are wished luck. Our Veterans xv played last weekend and our Women play
tomorrow. It is great to see so much Rugby being played at Medway, thank-you all!
Do meet & greet our visitors from Maidstone RFC, please help to make them feel welcome at Priestfields,
Rochester.
Thanks goes to Mr Jez Saxby who has arranged an informal Lunch today and more thanks to both Teams
who took part in the curtain raiser, Medway RFC under 11’s and their Kings School counterparts. Do
thank the players, parents & coaches for all their efforts in making it a terrific club day!
We thank all of our Sponsors today, especially our match day Sponsor, Mr Brian Edwards who will choose
the man of the match. Without our sponsors, from our corporate sponsors through to our vice-presidents
& those of us who play the 100 Club (yes, you are a “sponsor” too) we would not be able to sustain this
high level of competitive rugby. Do thank our Sponsors when you meet them. If you can sponsor our
Club please contact me.
There is a quiz night at the club on Friday 6th February 2015, do contact Sara Daly & enter a team or
just join in. We all enjoyed meeting Bobby Davro last week at our first comedy night & we raised around
£750 towards our new Club-house on the night as well, thank-you all for your continued help with of all
of our events.
Finally, do support the referee today and enjoy your afternoon. Both Clubs are wished the best of luck,
especially those wearing Scarlet & Gold. I will see you in the Clubhouse.
Now………………….C’mon Medway!

The updated news for the 1st XV injuries are that Alex O’Leary and Sam Catlin
started training again this week. It is early but the signs are encouraging. Reuben
Meres returns from his hamstring and starts for the Extra 1st Xv today. Connor
Chalmers is also expected to return to training next week.
Not so good is that Ross Cooley has had a scan and he is confirmed as requiring
surgery to repair his damaged shoulder. Also missing today is centre Owain Fussell
with an ankle injury but it is not thought serious.
We are pleased to announce that England and British Lions flanker Richard Hill will
be speaking at the senior club dinner on 15th May in the clubhouse. You may recall
that Richard was scheduled to speak last season however an illness in the family
prevented this and he is keen to honour his promise and has confirmed he will
speak this season. Great news!
Anyone seeking a new gym membership should see the excellent offer from our
sponsors The Village Hotel on the website which finishes tomorrow.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Medway RFC Junior section club historian
Brian Wolfe has written a book. It is released today and costs just £10. Brian is
donating all proceeds to the new clubhouse fund. Be sure to get your first addition
copy which i am sure Brian will endorse for you.
The 1st XV’s postponed league match versus Crowborough last week is unlikely to
be re-scheduled until 14th March.
The date for the next Vice Presidents lunch has been set and will take place at noon
on 21st February prior to the 1st XV hosting Thanet Wanderers in a key league
game.

January 1935 – The Rolenians enjoyed a 12-0 away win over HMS Worcester. This
was the Thames Nautical Training College based at Greenhithe. Worcester cadets,
entered the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy on leaving Worcester.
January 1955 - Although the game against Erith was even as regards territory
the visitors looked the more dangerous in attack. A try scored by Erith either side
of half-time settled the result. Rochester RFC managed to lose all three fixtures
against Erith that afternoon.
January 1965 – Another good win for Rochester ’A’s as they defeated Maidstone
18-3. They were crushed by the Rochester forwards, admirably led by Robin
Everest. Andy Cousins, at wing-forward, opened the scoring with the conversion
added by Rick Turpin. Mike Slack scored two tries, both the result of breaks from
five yard scrums. Both were converted by Rick Turpin who also kicked a penalty
to finish off the scoring.
January 1975 - Medway made the trip to Catford
to play Guy’s Hospital. In a game played in terrible
wintry conditions, they threw the ball around
whenever they could. A great switch in direction
saw Tony Armstrong race over and then Brian Waite
forced his way over from a scrum close to the line,
which he converted. Ron Thomas then used his
strength to crash over from a five yard scrum. As
conditions continued to worsen Mick Burford and
John Vyse scored further tries. To complete the
scoring Colum Meekin ghosted his way through
from 70 yards before unselfishly giving Brian
Waite the try – Colum had great speed over short
distances, but not so good over long!!
January 1985 – Played in pretty awful conditions, Medway gained an impressive
19 points to nil victory over Sevenoaks. Taff Gwilliam set up fly-half John Francis
for the opening try. Good work from Andy Rogers then created the chance for
Bob Burggy to finish off. Bob added the remainder of the points.

January 1995 – The Medway ‘A’
XV were in form as they comfortably
defeated Aylesford by 49 points to nil.
Neil Moles, John Robson, Gary Davies,
Paul Green Ian Dance, Paul Medhurst
and Steve Winbolt found their way
over the visitor’s line. The team were
enjoying a vintage season as a week
later they continued in the same vein
as they won 37-0 against Faversham.
This was the ‘A’ XV’s seventeenth win
of the season.
It is pleasing to note that all those mentioned above have attended at least one of
our annual past player re-unions.
January 2005 - A Ryan Olsen hat-trick of tries helped to keep Medway amongst
the leaders as they won 38-12 away against Darenth Valley. Ryan was one of our
first New Zealand recruits and had been in good try-scoring form that season.
Scrum-half Matt Jackson scored the second of the team’s tries. Colin Germany
converted four as well as crossing the line twice himself.
About this time Gerald Farrow took matters in hand and following a visit from
the Twickenham head- groundsman Keith Kent set to
work.
With a great deal of time, effort and money having
been spent over the last ten years on all the playing
surfaces at Priestfields, the club are now justifiably
proud of their ground and especially the main pitch.
In recent seasons, Medway has hosted three county
matches as well as the Kent RFU Finals Day.
Gerald Farrow and Mel Collins erecting the posts in
readiness for a new season. Admire that lush, green
grass.

comfortably and a narrow victory
against last year’s Essex league winners
Westcliff. Also started training sessions
with the development squad.
The Under 16s have put together
some excellent performances in recent
weeks, after a shaky start to 2015.
They secured a great victory away at
Folkestone (39-12) in the Kent Plate,
and are drawn against Gravesend in
the quarter-finals. They lost narrowly to
a powerful Canterbury side in a recent
friendly fixture, but showed some of
their early season fire and commitment,
which bodes well for the second half of
the season.
Medway U15s can now get two squads
out each week with a sub or two! Both
YOUTH NEWS
A and B teams went out of the Kent
Cup at the QF stage the A’s lost to Kent
champs Beccehamians in the cup and
the B’s to Ashford in the plate. Both
opposition are the favourites to win
their respective competition. We have
made the final of the East Kent Cup
which will be against Ashford on 29th
March at Sheppey’s ground.
Under 13’s are on the up tactically and
challenging wise. They are no longer
the weaker team they once were and
are in semi-finals of the East Kent Cup
at Ashford, against Ashford on Sunday
1st Feb.
We are growing in size (in numbers, not
size!!!) on a regular basis which is great
