About the Chamber
The Swansboro Area Chamber of Commerce/Visitor’s Center is a
not-for-profit 501 (c) (6) organization owned and operated by business leaders who care about the Swansboro area. The Chamber’s
mission is to promote business growth, to serve members with
professional development opportunities and to affect public policy
decisions to the benefit of the Swansboro area business community.
The Swansboro Area Chamber of Commerce is made up of approximately 275+ members, including large and small businesses,
professionals, organizations, educational institutions and individuals. The Chamber is the Swansboro area’s leading, membershipdriven business organization.
Located at the corner of Church and Water street in historic,
downtown Swansboro, the Chamber’s office also serves as the
Swansboro Welcome/Visitor’s Center. With tourism a large part of
the financial equation in the “Friendly City By the Sea,” the Chamber
works closely with the Swansboro Tourism Development Authority
and Onslow County Tourism to promote the area’s coastal communities.

Where is
Swansboro?
Swansboro is conveniently
located between Jacksonville, NC, and
Morehead City, NC. It’s easy to reach by
car, air, or boat. Modern and updated highways (NC 24, NC 58,
US 70, I 40) breeze you quickly to the coast. If you are traveling
by air, two regional airports serve our community:
Albert J. Ellis Airport (OAJ) in Richlands, NC, and
the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport (EWN) in
New Bern, NC. These airports provide regularly
scheduled flights to and from the rest of the world.
If you are boating your way to the area, remember
that the White Oak River and the Intracoastal
Waterway flow right past Swansboro. Transient
boaters are always welcome from around the world
for day trips, overnight stays and longer visits.

Area Fishing
A license is required to fish at the coast. Children under 16 are
exempt from a license. The license is available from the Division
of Marine Fisheries offices, Wildlife Resources Commission,
licensed agents such as bait and tackles shops, ncwildlife.org
or (888) 248-6834. Individuals do not need a license for pier
fishing or a charter boat as they are covered by a blanket license.

The Seaside Arts Council sponsors the Swanfest and the
Emeraldfest Concert series. Swanfest will take place every
Sunday evening, 6:30 - 8:00 pm at the Swansboro Olde Towne
Square Pavilion, starting in May and running through Labor Day
Weekend. Emeraldfest will take place every Thursday evening
6:30 - 8:00 pm at the Western Ocean Regional Access (next to
the Islander Suites) in Emerald Isle and will run June through

Onslow County
Founded in 1735, Onslow County is one of the oldest and largest
coastal counties in North Carolina. Named for the Honorable Arthur
Onslow, Speaker of the British House of Commons, Onslow is a
diverse county, sporting a landscape of sandy beaches, thick forests,
beautiful rivers and historic farmlands.
Towns in Onslow County include Swansboro, North Topsail Beach,
Holly Ridge, Richlands, portions of Surf City, and Jacksonville. The
county is also the home of the United States Marine Corps’ largest
amphibious training facility, Camp Lejeune. The county’s population (193,000) is dispersed throughout its 762 square mile radius,
making it one of the largest counties along the North Carolina

State Park in Swansboro. Bear Island, the main attraction of the
state park, is only accessible by ferry or private boat. For more

Throughout the county, sports enthusiasts will also find organized sports programs for all ages. Soccer is especially popular and

Military
Onslow County is home
to the United States Marine
Corps’ largest installation
on the east coast, Camp
Lejeune. Known as the “Home of Expeditionary
Forces in Readiness,” the Marine Corps Base houses
personnel that are among the nation’s first crisis
responders throughout the world.
Named in honor of Lt. Gen. John A. Lejeune, the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Camp Lejeune is home to a large active
duty, dependant, retired, and civilian employment population.
Camp Lejeune covers 156,000 acres, where approximately 42,000
marines and sailors are stationed. The base provides an annual
economic impact of close to $4 billion to the county.
Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS), New River, adjacent to Camp
Lejeune, is home to the rotary wing (helicopter) assets of the 2d
Marine Aircraft Wing.

Hubert
Hubert is a small
but growing community in the eastern
part of Onslow
County that offers its
residents the natural beauty of North
Carolina along with convenient business, shopping and tourism
opportunities.
Hubert is adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway and is the
home for the largest local North Carolina public boat ramp.
Boaters love the ramp’s easy access directly into the ICW.

Swansboro
Once the site of an Algonkian Indian village, Swansboro
officially began its maritime history in the mid 1700s,
when a prominent landowner, Theophilus Weeks, divided
a portion of his coastal plantation into 48 lots with 6
streets, and the colonial port town was born. But it wasn’t
until 1783 that the town
was officially incorporated
as Swannsborough, named
in honor of North Carolina
House of Commons Speaker
Samuel Swann.
The spelling of the name
has changed, but the quiet
town, snuggly tucked where
the White Oak River meets
the Intracoastal Waterway,
is still steeped with charm
and southern hospitality. It’s the perfect place to
quiet the soul and refresh
the mind. From its quaint
historic waterfront to its pristine undeveloped beaches,
the Swansboro area offers a relaxing yet exciting

Strolling through the streets of the historic downtown
waterfront, visitors can envision life as it once was for the
port community. Many historic homes and buildings are
well preserved. Tall shrimp boats mark the horizon,

the town’s early heritage of shipbuilding and commercial

Hammocks Beach State Park
Venture to Bear Island and reward yourself with vivid
memories of one of the most unspoiled beaches on the Atlantic
Coast. Accessible only by passenger ferry or private boat, there’s
just one thing at Hammocks Beach that’s crowded, the list of
things to do.
Stroll the beach with laughing gulls and sandpipers. Cast a
baited hook into endless rows of foaming breakers. Discover
tiny specimens of marine life in tidal pools and mudflats. Use
a camera or
paintbrush to
capture the
green and gold
grasses that
color the salt
marshes. Spend
the night among
the sand dunes,
or simply bask in the sun and do nothing at all.
Primitive campsites are located near the beach and
the inlet. Fourteen family campsites accommodate six people
each. Two group campsites, available to affiliated groups
only, accommodate a total of 36 people. Light and simple is
the way to travel as campers must carry all provisions to the
campsites from the beach or
ferry dock.
Water and other facilities are
available on the island, except
from mid-November through
mid-March when the facilities
are winterized. Fires are not
permitted, and campers must
remove all trash. Camping is
permitted on numbered sites
only and permits must be
obtained from the park office
on the mainland. Reservations
are required for group sites.

Carteret County, established in 1722, represents 1341 square
miles (including land and water) of North Carolina’s Crystal
Coast. With a population of 68,000 (and growing), the salty

History buffs will appreciate many stops along the NC Crystal Coast. Fort Macon State Park, located at the eastern end of
Bogue Banks, is home to one of North Carolina’s coastal Civil War

The North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC, is a
must-see for those interested in historical shipwrecks along the
North Carolina coast, including the shipwreck believed to be

North Carolina state ports. In keeping with its maritime history,

research facilities. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries is located in Morehead City, along with the Center for Marine
Sciences & Technology, a partnership between Carteret Community College and NC State University. UNC’s Institute of Marine
Sciences and Duke University’s Marine Lab also have state-ofthe-art research facilities in Carteret County.
Morehead City and Beaufort are sister towns known for their
historic, picturesque waterfronts. Beach towns include Atlantic
Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, Indian Beach, Salter Path and Emerald

Cape Carteret
When Cape Carteret first incorporated in 1959, it consisted of
a mere 15 residences, one retail store, and a property development office. Fifty-six years later, the town that was once just a
vision to founder William Britton McLean has prospered into a
vibrant community at the western end of Carteret County, minutes away from Cedar Point, Swansboro, Emerald Isle, Bogue
and Peletier, NC.
McLean was instrumental in the inception of Cape Carteret,
developing plans for expansion of the quiet, coastal community
and then donating the land for the planned expansion. From
these early days of incorporation, Cape Carteret has grown to a
population of just over 2,000,
including many retirees and
second home owners.
Water sports are abundantly popular in the area,
certainly along the Bogue
Sound and the Intracoastal
Waterway. Fishing, boating,
swimming and kayaking are
all popular outdoor activities.
Cape Carteret also has its
own boat ramp at the end of
Manatee St., a less crowded
alternative to North Carolina’s public boat ramps.
For the land lovers, biking and hiking trails are readily available along the coast and through the Croatan Forest.
Cape Carteret was one of the first communities in North
Carolina to establish a community watch program. The town
offers its residents a local library, two local churches,
a number of restaurants and a popular area shopping
center.
Cape Carteret is also known for a very active Garden Club.
The club was established in 1977 and since then has worked on

Mention Cedar Point, NC, and most locals think of the famous Octagon House that was built in Cedar Point by Edward
Hill. With its unique architecture and picturesque setting, it
has fascinated visitors and residents alike since 1859. Much
has changed since the Hill family owned their plantation, but
family values and hard work are still a strong part of this tight
knit community.
Cedar Point is known for its small businesses, many of which
have been family owned and operated for years. NC Hwy. 24,
the “main drag,” is dotted with a wide variety of shops and service businesses. For an area of approximately 1,300 residents,
business is bustling.
Local produce stands are a popular fixture in Cedar Point.
Visitors drive from miles around to get what locals might sometimes take for granted: locally grown fruits and vegetables.
One thing none of them ever take for granted... A Bogue Sound
Watermelon is always well worth the trip to Carteret County.
Since they can only be successfully grown in land surrounding
Bogue Sound,

a draw to the
area for many
years to come.

Cedar Point
was named for
the cedar trees
that lined NC Hwy. 24 for many years. Recent hurricanes have
claimed many of these majestic trees but the picturesque views
of Bogue Sound, the White Oak River, and the Atlantic
Intracoastal Waterway still remain.
Exploring the area is easy. Boaters can launch directly
into the Intracoastal Waterway via the NC Wildlife Resources
Commission Boat Ramp on NC Hwy. 24. Another NC Wildlife
Boat Ramp is available at Western Park off Old N.C. 58. Water
adventurers can explore the Croatan National Forest using the
Saltwater Adventure Trail, the only national forest saltwater
trail in the United States. The Croatan National Forest can also
be explored using the Cedar Point Trail.

Emerald Isle
In 1954, the barrier island of Bogue Banks, now known
as Emerald Isle, was purchased by seven developers for
$350,000. At the time, this was Carteret County’s largest recorded land purchase. Of course, that was considered quite
a tidy sum of money by 1950s standards, but most visitors
and residents both past and present will agree that those
visionary developers got a bargain. In fact, they bought an
island paradise for their $350,000 and today Emerald Isle is
one of the most popular islands along the North Carolina
coast.
Known as a family friendly beach community, Emerald
Isle was incorporated in 1957 and boasts a year-round
population of approximately 3,800, although during the
tourist season that number rises significantly.
Activities on the island include aquatic favorites like
swimming, snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving, boating, sailing, kayaking and wind surfing. Fishermen (and ladies) can
cast their lines from the famous Bogue Inlet Fishing Pier,
surf fish, or boat their way through the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean in search of THE BIG ONE.
(Boaters will enjoy the convenience of Emerald Isle’s public
boat ramp located just off Hwy. 58.)
In keeping with the town’s friendly family atmosphere,
Emerald Isle features an extensive 10-foot-wide bicycle path
for even more family fun.
Walking the
beach, shell collecting, shopping and
golfing are other
favorite pastimes of
the beach life. The
island also has a variety of dining options (local seafood being a specialty, of course) to tempt the taste buds.
Turtle lovers unite with the Emerald Isle Sea Turtle Protection Program. The program is designed to monitor the
nesting activities of the endangered loggerhead sea turtle
from May to August and is always looking for volunteers to
help in the turtles’ amazing nesting and hatching process.
Annual events include the St. Patrick’s Day Festival,
July 4th fireworks display, and the Christmas Parade.

Peletier
Peletier, a town of 3.3
miles, has slightly over
500 residents. Founded
around 1870 by Jeremiah
Jabez Pelletier, the area
was originally called Pelletier Mills. In 1905, the
postmaster’s appointment
certificate inexplicably
read Peletier instead of
Pelletier Mills and the
mistake was never corrected. The town became
known as Peletier.
Golfers are drawn to
Peletier’s well-known
Silver Creek Golf Club. The golf club features a challenging
18-hole championship layout. Beautiful homes surround
the community.
Peletier borders the Croatan National Forest, a coastal
forest known for its bogs, salt estuaries, and pine forest.

Bogue
Bogue may be one of the smallest towns along the Crystal
Coast, but residents and visitors alike will agree that a lot of
Bogue Sound’s history is packed into this little town.
Incorporated in 1995, Bogue now boasts a population of just
over 680 full-time residents. The area borders scenic Bogue
Sound, and is only a short ‘jump’ from Cape Carteret,
Emerald Isle, and Swansboro.
Bogue is home to United States Marine Corps Auxiliary
Landing Field, or Bogue Field, a training facility used for flight
exercises along the coast. The facility was originally opened
in 1942 and used for various military purposes, but since 2003,
only one landing strip is open for military training exercises.
