MONDAY 2/2 Scripp Spelling Bee Program meets at lunchtime. WEDNESDAY 2/4 School registrations are due in the office. 7:30 PM - General Home and School Meeting in St. Denis gym THURSDAY 2/5 7:30 to 9:30 AM & 4:00 to 6:00 PM New Family Registration FRIDAY 2/6 11:15 AM - Elective Program for grades 6, 7, and 8 Spotlight on Fourth Grade Happy New Year! Students in grade four have returned to school and have been working hard in the classroom. As we begin another Liturgical Year, we are focused on the Old Testament and Mount Sinai. Students are discussing the Ten Commandments and the special covenant God made with His people. They are reading from the Book of Exodus, learning about the Great Commandment, and are challenged to write the Commandments in their own words without using the word “not.” After exploring factors and multiples of whole numbers, fourth grade is currently busy finding two and three digit quotients in division. Students write and solve “real world” division problems and are practicing explaining Our Thinking to communicate mathematically. They love using manipulatives and art to model equal groups and remainders. The Science Lab is an exciting place to be this time of year. Fourth graders are combining liquids and solids and observing physical and chemical reactions. Throughout our Chemistry Unit, students use observations and scientific tools to describe the qualitative and quantitative properties of matter. Finding mass with a triple beam balance scale, measuring volume with beakers and test tubes, and testing the pH of liquids are some examples of how the children gather data in the science lab. Next month we will explore Forms of Energy! In ELA, students are reading stories about how people express themselves in many ways. They are determining the author’s purpose for writing, analyzing the hidden theme in stories, and making connections from the text to their lives. Grade four has been studying perspective in writing, and the children are currently writing stories from the perspective of an inanimate object. Seeing the world from someone or something else’s point of view can be challenging, however our students are rising to the task. In Social Studies the students are working hard learning about inventors. They have just created their own invention! We are preparing to study Pennsylvania government, life in modern Pennsylvania, and famous Pennsylvanians. Our studies will conclude with a Biography Fair in May! 6-053 Since 1947 Tire & Auto Service 610-789-2121 Emissions - Inspection - Alignment - Brakes - Tune-Ups Township Line & Lynn Blvd. • Upper Darby Engaging Days.
