WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 4th, 2015 Southland Area Athlete of the Month February 2015 Arthur Broda, 22, is this month’s Bridgeport News Southland Athlete of the Month. Arthur has been competing since he was 11 years old and competed while attending Ray Graham Training Center High School. Arthur is new to the McGuane Park team and will be joining many of the sports teams at the park throughout 2015. Arthur plans to join the basketball team, floor hockey team and snowshoe team. His favorite sport to compete in is basketball. Arthur competed for the first time on January 10th with the “McGuane Magic” basketball team. He was instrumental in leading the team to a win. He started as the team center and scored a total of 10 points! The “McGuane Magic” team brought home the gold medal and will compete at the state level in Bloomington, IL March 13-15th. Go Magic! Arthur’s grandma and grandpa are always there for Arthur cheering him on at practices and competitions. Arthur’s grandfather says, “He loves Special Olympics. He gets along with everybody.” Arthur says his favorite aspect of competing is “hanging out with friends and winning the gold medal.” Arthur also loves to help coach the McGuane Park little league baseball and football teams. “I help out with the kids who need help,” says Arthur. “I like to help out.” Arthur says his favorite thing to do in his free time, when he is not competing, is practicing basketball and being with friends. “Arthur is a new and huge asset to “McGuane Magic,” says Kathleen McIntosh, coach of the McGuane Magic. “He is a very athletic and competitive person and has impressed his coaches from the beginning. He works very hard at practicing for upcoming sports and competition and he lives and breathes Special Olympics. You can see in his face how determined and excited he is to compete. The Special Olympics are his whole world and it has been so much fun to coach him so far. I can see a natural born athlete in Arthur and I cannot wait to see what he will bring to the McGuane Park team. He is a helpful and kind person and it has been great to get to know him better.” Congratulations Arthur on your success and continued hard work as an athlete of Special Olympics Chicago! The Special Olympics mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Tolitano M.D. is the founder of the Institute of CardioThoracic and Vein Surgery, Advanced Vein Clinics and Nuovo Aesthetics & Smartlipo®. Dr. Tolitano was born and raised in Chicago and is currently practicing medicine as Chief of Vascular Surgery at Trinity Hospital and Senior Cardiac Surgeon at Mercy Hospital. With over 20 years of cardiovascular expertise, Dr. Tolitano has performed over 5,000 open heart surgeries and 4,000 vein treatments. A pioneer in the treatment of Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI), Dr. Tolitano developed a varicose vein removal treatment that has a 100% success rate over 5 years. In September 2014 Dr. Tolitano was selected to be the first Heart Surgeon to install an FDA approved polymer plug that’s been used for years in neurosurgery, to treat vein disease. This ground-breaking treatment, performed at Advanced Vein Clinics, also boasts a 100% success rate. At Nuovo Aesthetics & Smartlipo®, Downtown Chicago’s premier Med Spa, Dr. Tolitano brought his innovative techniques to skin and cosmetic treatments, including state-of-the-art FDA approved laser liposuction and cellulite removal treatments. Dr. Tolitano’s mission is to bring relief to the millions of Americans suffering from vein disease. He says, “Every patient is unique and any good vein clinic needs to offer different modalities to treat them. These treatments are covered by Medicare and most insurance, but unfortunately, Medicaid does not cover them. This is a shame because people in these under served communities have to suffer from something that we can easily fix.” No successful organization is a one person operation and Dr. Tolitano’s is no different. His highly trained staff delivers heart health in English, Spanish and Polish. Nurse Manager Crystal Spaeth, RN is also a community leader in health care and in January 2015 was named Chicago Chapter President for The National Association of Professional Women. Dr. Tolitano is proud to be a presenting sponsor of Fifty Shades of Red and to support the American Heart Association in their efforts not only during Heart Health Month, but 365 days a year. Stay Safe During Bitterly Cold Temperatures and Dangerous Snow Conditions Dangerously low temperatures and accumulating snow are in the forecast for much of the Midwest and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) wants individuals and families to be safe when faced with the hazards of cold temperatures and winter weather. “Subfreezing temperatures and wind chills can be dangerous and even life-threatening for people who don't take the proper precautions,” said Andrew Velasquez III, FEMA Regional Administrator. “It is important for everyone to monitor their local weather reports and take steps now to stay safe, whether traveling or at home, during times of extreme cold temperatures.” During cold weather, you should take the following precautions. Stay indoors as much as possible and limit your exposure to the cold. Dress in layers and keep dry Check on family, friends and neighbors who are at risk and may need additional assistance. Know the symptoms of cold-related health issues such as frostbite and hypothermia and seek medical attention if health conditions are severe. Bring your pets indoors or ensure they have a warm shelter area with unfrozen water. Make sure your vehicle has an emergency kit that includes an ice scraper, blanket and flashlight and keep the fuel tank above half full. If you are told to stay off the roads, stay home. If you must drive, don’t travel alone; keep others informed of your schedule and stay on main roads. DID YOU KNOW... That every Wednesday Solid Past.
