Mar 2, 8:30pm VALENTINE’S DAY MASSACRE: THE NOTEBOOK ON HECKLEVISION DIRECTOR Nick Cassavetes, USA, 2004, 123 min. This is the Valentine’s Day show for anyone who can’t get date, doesn’t want one, or has partnered up with someone as cynical, bitter and sardonic as themselves. Whether you love The Notebook, hate it, hate that you love it, or tell anyone who will listen that you’ve never seen it, come vent your “frustrations” at the saccharine love story that set the bar for romance at an unattainable height and unleashed Gosling fever with a no-holds-barred text takedown. Bring your drinks into the theatre, leave your phone on, stretch your wit, and heckle until your sides split. muvchat.com Sat. For many, stand up comedy reached its highest expression one night in December 1978, at a theatre in Long Beach, California. In a performance of such authority and control it will astonish anyone who only knows him from his movie roles, Richard Pryor channels searingly candid autobiographical tales of pain, hurt and humiliation into gales of hilarity. The screening will be proceeded by a half hour set performed by Vancouver based comic Dino Archie. Mon. A brief history of African American photography in the company of filmmaker Thomas Allen Harris. “A family memoir, a tribute to unsung artists and a lyrical, at times, heartbroken, meditation on imagery and identity. Harris marshals an impressive collection of scholars, artists and photojournalists to help us understand what we see… He is a wise and passionate guide to an inexhaustibly fascinating subject.” —AO Scott, The New York Times Filmmaker Q&A Mon. Feb 2, 6:30pm BLACK ORPHEUS KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON DIRECTOR Alan Hicks, USA, 2014, 84 min, PG. Meet “the happiest sound in jazz” - and maybe the brightest mentor, too. Clark Terry was Dizzy Gillespie’s favourite trumpet player, but he’s also an inspirational teacher - the antithesis of the character played by JK Simmons in Whiplash. At 93, Terry is still teaching, taking blind 23-year-old piano prodigy Justin Kauflin under his arm, just as he did with Quincy Jones and Miles Davis before him. Sun. Feb 1, 6:10pm Mon. Belle star Gugu Mbatha-Raw is marvellous as the extraordinary young singer who is propelled in to a rollercoast career in pop by her ambitious mother (Minnie Driver). The movie chronicles how the music industry remakes Noni in its own highly sexualized image, but suggests (with an element of wish fulfillment) that there is a way out, and true love can save the day. Mon. Feb 16, 6:10pm (Tickets $7) KING: A FILMED RECORD... MONTGOMERY TO MEMPHIS DIRECTOR Sidney Lumet & Joseph L Mankiewicz, USA, 1970, 185 min. It features dramatic readings by Harry Belafonte, James Earl Jones and Paul Newman, among others. Mon. Set in Germany from 1925-45, this Oscar and Palme d’Or winning film adaptation of the acclaimed Gunter Grass novel is the story of Oskar Matzerath. Born with an adult’s intelligence, Oskar throws himself down a flight of stairs at age 3 to stunt his growth in protest at the crazy hypocrisy of the adult world, and forever after marches to the beat of his own drum. Guest Presenter Ken Wallace is a painter and retired associate professor. Tue. Feb 3, 7:30pm THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW DIRECTOR Pier Paolo Pasolini, Italy, 1964, 137 min. Pasolini was a Marxist and an atheist, but above all he was a poet, and his film of the life of Christ gives us the feeling that we are there, with Jesus, cinema-vrite style. This is also the most contemplative film about Christ. Guest Michael Audain is chairman of Polygon Homes, Chair of the Audain Art Museum and the Audain Foundation. He is also the first Honorary Chairman of the Vancouver Art Gallery, a past Chair of the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Vancouver Art Gallery Foundation. Tue. Mar 3, 7:30pm DIRECTOR Ana Lily Amirpour, USA/Iran, 2014, 99 min. The first Iranian Vampire Western ever made, Ana Lily Amirpour’s debut basks in the sheer pleasure of pulp. A joyful mash-up of genre, archetype, and iconography, its prolific influences span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the Iranian New Wave. “A wildly inventive Iranian vampire movie that grabs you by the throat with its dark, moody style, pulsating soundtrack and offbeat love story.” —David Lewis, San Francisco Chronicle Sat. Feb 7, 10:15pm Sun. Feb 8, 9:00pm Fri. Feb 20, 8:50pm Sat. Feb 21, 10:00pm THE DUKE OF BURGUNDY DIRECTOR Peter Strickland, GB, 2014, 101 min. The thinking pervert’s 50 Shades of Grey, this ritualized SM lesbian love story is at once tongue-in-cheek erotica, a high art porno pastiche, and, most perversely of all, a sincerely unsettling but genuinely moving love story worthy of Luis Bunuel himself. ““Visually ravishing, emotionally wise, and kinky as a coiled rope, writer-director Peter Strickland’s third feature The Duke of Burgundy is a delight.” —Leslie Felperin, Hollywood Reporter Fri. After receiving its N American premiere at last year’s VIFF, this French-made documentary about political cartoonists around the world has acquired terrible new relevence after the atrocity of the Charlie Hebdo murders. Sat. Feb 7, 7:30pm SONG OF THE SEA DIRECTOR Tomm Moore, Ireland, 2014, 93 min, G: All ages welcome. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Film. Ben is a lousy big brother to six-year-old Saoirse – he’s resentful that she can’t (or won’t) speak, and can’t forgive that his mum died during childbirth. Their dad hasn’t gotten over it either, but still their life together on the lonely island seems infinitely preferable to the conventional upbringing their gran has in mind for them, living with her in Dublin. Dazzling imagery and a soulful approach make Song of the Sea is a magical experience, recommended for all ages. Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature. Fri. Feb 6, 5:00pm Sat. Feb 7, 3:00pm Sun. Feb 8, 3:00pm Mon. Feb 9, 4:15pm Sat. Feb 14, 12:30pm SITTING ON THE EDGE OF MARLENE DIRECTOR Ana Valine, Canada, 2014, 90 min. Ana Valine’s darkly comic drama centres on mother/daughter con artists who just can’t catch a break. Seen through the eyes of 16-year-old Sammie (Paloma Kwiatkowski)— who lives with her pill-popping, alcoholic mom Marlene (Suzanne Clément)—this bittersweet journey leads us through dysfunction, love and addiction, before culminating with an unusual deliverance for this compelling pair. Winner, Best Director, Leo Awards 2014. Writer-director Ana Valine will introduce Friday’s screening. Fri. Feb 27, 6:30pm Sat. Feb 28, 8:00pm Sun. Mar 1, 6:30pm Mon. Mar 2, 6:30pm Tue. Mar 3, 5:00pm A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME DIRECTOR Danny Tedesco, USA, 2008, 101 min. Like 50 Feet From Stardom this is the story of unsung heroes, the session musicians who made the 60s swing. Guaranteed, you will never hear pop from that era the same way again. Touching on everyone from the Beach Boys to Elvis, Sinatra to Sonny & Cher, this is an astonishing glimpse behind the scenes at the hey day of American pop. Fri. Feb 20, 6:45pm Sat. Feb 21, 6:00pm, 8:00pm Thu. Feb 26, 4:00pm DIRECTOR Errol Morris, USA/GB, 1991, 81 min. The release of The Theory of Everything, and indeed, the “science” of box office hit Interstellar, allows us the perfect excuse to bring back this fascinating meeting of minds between Stephen Hawking and eminent US documentarian Errol Morris. With a score by Philip Glass. Winner: Filmmaker’s Award, 1992 National Society of Film Critics; Grand Jury Prize, 1992, Sundance Film Festival; Best Documentary, 1992, Seattle International Film Festival Sun. Feb 15, 3:00pm CITIZENFOUR SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE ON SCREEN: THE TAMING OF THE SHREW DIRECTOR Laura Poitras, USA, 2014, 114 min. In January 2013, filmmaker Laura Poitras was in the process of constructing a film about abuses of national security in post-9/11 America when she started receiving encrypted e-mails from someone identifying himself as “citizen four,” who was ready to blow the whistle on the massive covert surveillance programs run by the NSA and other intelligence agencies. In June 2013, she and reporter Glenn Greenwald flew to Hong Kong for the first of many meetings with the man who turned out to be Edward Snowden. She brought her camera with her. “Tense and frightening...a primal political fable for the digital age.” —New York Times Oscar nominee. Sun. Feb 15, 4:45pm DIRECTOR Toby Frow, GB, 2013, 182 min. Shakespeare’s notorious battle of the sexes gives us one of theatre’s great screwball double-acts in the shape of Katherina and Petruchio – a couple hell-bent on confusing and outwitting each other right up to the play’s controversial conclusion. Director Toby Frow gives us “a riotous mixture of verbal dexterity and slapstick” in an exhilarating production that delighted audiences at the Globe. Katherina is played by the Olivier Award-winning Samantha Spiro Tickets $15 ($13 students and seniors) Sun. Feb 1, 2:45pm
