NOVA: PETRA—LOST CITY OF STONE
5.1: WED 2/18 8PM; 9.1: SAT 2/21 8PM
More than 2,000 years ago, the thriving city of Petra rose up in the bone-dry desert of what is
now Jordan. An oasis of culture and abundance, the city was built by wealthy merchants who
carved spectacular temple-tombs into its cliffs, raised a monumental Great Temple and devised
an ingenious system that channeled water to vineyards, bathhouses, fountains and pools.
But following a catastrophic earthquake and a slump in its desert trade routes, Petra’s unique
culture faded and was lost to most of the world for nearly 1,000 years.

AMERICAN MASTERS: AUGUST WILSON—THE GROUND ON WHICH I STAND
5.1: FRI 2/20 9:30PM
From his roots as an activist and poet to his indelible mark on Broadway, this program captures the
legacy of the man some call America’s Shakespeare. Film and theater luminaries such as James Earl
Jones, Viola Davis, Phylicia Rashad, Laurence Fishburne, Charles Dutton and others share their stories
of the creator of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Fences, Joe Turner’s Come and
Gone, the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Piano Lesson, Two Trains Running and four others before his
untimely death in 2005.

Today’s working-age men and women are often overwhelmed providing child care
as well as taking care of elderly parents. So how do we fare in New Mexico when it comes to
supporting families in our workplaces? What does it mean to have a family friendly workplace?
And with our state still struggling economically can we afford to push for such policies? Can we
afford not to have more flexible workplaces, given our poor rankings for child well-being?

New Mexico PBS... Always Quality
“There are certain things in New Mexico that we absolutely can’t live
without – the big blue skies, green and red chile, and New Mexico PBS!
Whether its hosting their Science Cafés or fundraisers for Antiques
Roadshow, Los Poblanos feels extremely fortunate to be long-time
supporters and partners of New Mexico PBS. As a business dedicated
to preservation, culture and history, we obviously love all the shows
about food, travel, and architecture. More importantly, we recognize
PBS as the trusted source for news and quality programming regarding
important topics that are not being covered elsewhere. New Mexico PBS
is a privilege that none of us in our community can afford to live without.
Please join us in supporting public broadcasting for our state.”
Matt Rembe, Executive Director, Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm

NOVA: Colosseum—
Roman Death Trap
THE ITALIAN
AMERICANS
5.1: WED 2/11 8PM
9.1: SAT 2/14 8PM
5.1: TUE 2/17 &
2/24 8PM
Trace the evolution of Italian
Americans from the late 19th
century to today, with Tony
Bennett, David Chase, John
Turturro, Congresswoman Nancy
Pelosi, Gay Talese, and more. Once
“outsiders” viewed with suspicion and
mistrust, Italian Americans are today some of
the most prominent leaders of U.S. business, politics
and the arts. The series peels away myths and stereotypes to reveal a
world uniquely Italian and uniquely American. Stanley Tucci narrates.
GREAT PERFORMANCES:
La Dolce Vita—The Music
of Italian Cinema
5.1: FRI 2/27 9:30PM
The Colosseum is a monument to Roman
imperial power and cruelty. In its elliptical
arena, tens of thousands of gladiators,
slaves, prisoners and wild animals met
their deaths. Ancient texts report lions and
elephants emerging from beneath the floor,
as if by magic, to ravage gladiators and
people condemned to death. Then, just as
quickly, the Colosseum could be flooded
with so much water that ships could engage
in sea battles. Could these legends be true?
A major component of Italian
cinema’s enduring popularity
continues to be a lush selection of
sweeping film scores by composers
like Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone.
Featuring Josh Groban, Renée Fleming
and Joshua Bell, GREAT PERFORMANCES
partners with the New York Philharmonic and music
director Alan Gilbert for a romantic concert of audience favorites
with music from 8½, Amarcord, Once Upon a Time in the West,
Cinema Paradiso, Life Is Beautiful, Il Postino, and more.
