THE VANCOUVER ASAHI
DIRECTOR Ishi Yuya, Japan, 2014, 130 min, Classified: PG.
Once upon a time in Vancouver, there was a baseball team called the Asahi, This was in
the 1930s, when the city had a small Japantown on the downtown wharves, and the
team was formed by the Canadian-born kids of immigrants. Smaller, and weaker, than
the Caucasian teams, they struggled at first - but then they figured out a smarter way to
win... Like a Fred Herzog exhibition brought to life, this is a lavish historical piece, a more
philosophical type of sports movie than we’re used to in N America, but something that
we can recognize as part and parcel of our own cultural heritage.

Street style photographer Ari Seth Cohen and director Lina Plioplyte dive into the personal lives
of New York City’s most fashionable women over 60. In an industry obsessed with youth, these
older women dispel conventional ideas about beauty and aging and prove that with age comes
grace, confidence, boldness, flair and new, unimagined opportunities for fame and fortune.

HOLIDAY FAVOURITES
ANTARCTICA: A YEAR ON ICE
DIRECTOR Anthony Powell, New Zealand, 2013, 91 min.
Fifteen years and nine Antarctic winters in the making, Powell’s film gives a glimpse
into what it is like to spend a full year living and working in the harshest place on the
planet, presenting a never-before-seen insider’s view of the frozen south. It’s dazzling
throughout, but never more so than in long, endless nights of the Antarctic winter,
when the sun never rises, time stands still, and the aurora australis puts on a private
show of heavenly dimensions.

Chosen by VIFF Vancity Theatre members, this year’s
New Year’s Eve event movie is Wright’s anti-blockbuster, a hipster’s comic book adaptation chock full of great
gags and inventive fun. When under-employed Scott
Pilgrim (the cutely anxious Michael Cera) takes up with
a cool American girl, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth
Winstead), he must fight it out with her seven exes.
Wed. Dec 31, 7:00pm

Yogananda was the Hindu Swami who brought yoga and
meditation to the West in the 1920s. Paramahansa Yogananda authored the spiritual classic “Autobiography of a
Yogi,” which has sold millions of copies worldwide and is
a go-to book for seekers, philosophers and yoga enthusiasts today. This unconventional documentary has won
critical plaudits everywhere it has screened.
“Gentle sitar music, languorous camerawork and soothing

UNDER THE SKIN
DIRECTOR Jonathan Glazer, GB, 2014, 108 min, 19+.
The most radical, underground movie to creep into the
mainstream in some time, Jonathan Glazer’s first since
Birth might have been called “The Woman Who Fell to
Earth”. That woman is Scarlett Johansson, simultaneously deglamourized and highly sexualized. She picks
up random men and destroys them.

WE ARE THE BEST!
DIRECTOR Lukas Moodysson, Sweden, 2013, 102 min, PG.
Lukas Moodysson (Together; Show Me Love) adapts
his wife Coco’s graphic novel about three 13-year-old
girls growing up in early ‘80s Stockholm and forming
their own punk band - the best band in the world!
Sun. Dec 28, 1:45pm
DIRECTOR Ruben Ostland, Sweden, 2014, 120 min.
One of the most popular movies at this year’s VIFF, this
is both an acute psychological study and a deadpan
comedy of manners, a portrait of a family riven by the
father’s instinctive act of cowardice in the face of an
avalanche during a skiing holiday. For all his attempts
to pretend that nothing has happened, everything has
changed. But what to do about it?

THE IMMIGRANT
DIRECTOR James Gray, USA, 2014, 120 min.
Arguably the most underrated US movie of the year,
the latest from James Gray (Two Lovers) is a romantic
epic set in New York in the 1920s. Marion Cotillard is
superb as the Polish woman torn between Joaquin
Phoenix’s dubious fixer, Bruno, and his cousin, an illusionist (Jeremy Renner).
Mon. Dec 29, 6:00pm
TALE OF THE PRINCESS KAGUYA
DIRECTOR Isao Takahata, Japan, 2014, 137 min, PG.
A gem of a film for all ages from Studio Ghibli’s other
master, Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies). In this
captivating 10,000 year fable, a woodcutter discovers a magical child in a bamboo stalk. The girl grows
quickly, transforming into a young woman of such
grace and beauty it seems her life is charmed...

DIRECTOR Xavier Dolan, Canada, 2014, 139 min, 14A.
The fifth film from 25-year-old Dolan invites extreme
reactions: it’s the story of a deeply troubled teen, his
tumultuous relationship with his single mom (Anne
Dorval), and the timid part time teacher who agrees
to tutor him (Suzanne Clement). It’s a pulsing, live-wire
movie, kicking and screaming to make itself heard.

as a world phenomenon. Now one of the most famous
red wines in the world, 30 years ago Barolo was unknown
even in its own production region, the beautiful Langhe,
in northwestern Italy. Barolo’s current success is mainly
due to the courage and initiative of a group of small-scale

first century cultural landscape in a way few movies can compete with. In every case they were
crafted by many hands - a large talent pool of writers and directors - but always there is a showrunner pulling the strings, the producer-artist responsible for the big picture and keeping the
show on the road. Des Doyle’s documentary gives us the inside scoop from some of the best
in the business.

SONG OF NAPOLI SONG ‘E NAPULE
DIRECTORS Antonio Manetti, Marco Manetti, Italy, 2013, 113 min.
Set in modern-day Naples, Song’e Napule (Neapolitan
dialect for “I am from Napoli”) is a hugely entertaining
comedy with an endearing cast that will leave audiences whistling the catchy award-winning tunes with
a silly grin on their face.
“A tuneful, genre parody casting a loving glance on
Naples and its criminal underworld.” —Screen Daily

MEN OF THE CLOTH
WINTER SLEEP
DIRECTOR Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Turkey, 2014, 196 min.
A masterpiece from Turkish auteur Nuri Bilge Ceylan, the Palme d’Or winner at Cannes
last year is a dense, Chekhovian drama about Aydin, a middle-aged hotel owner (a retired actor who fancies himself a man of learning and enlightenment), his considerably
younger wife, his divorced sister, and several of his tenants - all of whom harbour resentments Aydin simply cannot comprehend. ‘A richly engrossing and ravishingly beautiful
magnum opus.” —Justin Chang, Variety

ART ON FILM
TU DORS, NICOLE
DIRECTOR Stephane Lafleur, Canada, 2014, 93 min, PG.
Remember that summer when you were 22, a young adult, but too young to know
the difference? Responsibility was still something your parents talked about. There
was work but nothing you cared about. Same thing with sex. And mostly, that
summer, there was time on your hands. Time to dream, time to think, time to do
nothing much at all... That’s where Nicole is at, in Stephane Lafleur’s droll comedy,
a black and white Canadian gem that captures a moment of transition with easy
poetic grace and just a touch of absurdist genius.

A portrait of Nino Corvato, Checchino Fonticoli and
Joe Centofanti, three Italian master tailors who confront the decline of the apprentice system as they
navigate their challenging roles in the twilight of
their career. The film unravels the mystery of their
artistry and reveals how their passionate devotion to
their Old World craft is akin to a religion.

L’ECLISSE
DIRECTOR Michelangelo Antonioni, Italy, 1962, 126 min.
The concluding chapter of Michelangelo Antonioni’s
informal trilogy on contemporary malaise (following
L’avventura and La notte), L’eclisse tells the story of a young
woman (Monica Vitti) who leaves one lover (Francisco
Rabal) and drifts into a relationship with another (Alain
Delon). Antonioni returns to the theme that preoccupied
him the most: the difficulty of connection in an alienating
modern world.

THOSE HAPPY YEARS ANNI FELICI
DIRECTOR Daniele Luchetti, Italy, 2013, 106 min.
Genuine affection is paired with trenchant reflection in
Daniele Luchetti’s subtle, sharply perceptive and partially autobiographical look back at (what could be) his parents’ marriage. An avant garde artist (Kim Rossi Stuart) is
not above dallying with his frequently nude models, but
expects a more conventional loyalty from his wife (Micaela Ramazzotti). But on a feminist retreat she begins
to have other ideas...

BOCCACCIO ‘70
DIRECTORS Mario Monicelli, Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti,
Vittorio De Sica, Italy, 1962, 205 min.
Mario Monicelli (Big Deal on Madonna Street), Federico
Fellini (8 ), Luchino Visconti (The Leopard) and Vittorio
De Sica (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) direct Sophia Loren, Anita Ekberg, Romy Schneider and more
through four stories of unashamed eros. Modeled on
Boccaccio’s Decameron, they are comic moral tales
about the hypocrisies surrounding sex in 1960s Italy.

8½
DIRECTOR Federico Fellini, Italy, 1963, 138 min.
Marcello Mastroianni plays Guido Anselmi, a director
whose new project is collapsing around him, along
with his life. One of the greatest films about film ever
made, Federico Fellini’s 8½ (Otto e mezzo) turns one
man’s artistic crisis into a grand epic of the cinema.
An early working title for 8½ was The Beautiful Confusion, and Fellini’s masterpiece is exactly that.

WINDS OF HEAVEN
DIRECTOR Michael Ostroff, Canada, 2010, 87 min.
Time to revisit Emily Carr with fresh eyes and renewed enthusiasm in the wake of (amazingly!) the
first UK exhibition of her work, currently showing in
London. The British critics have compared the work
to Van Gogh. “Carr’s landscapes are as exhilarating as
the places they represent,” wrote The Guardian. This
insightful, impressionistic documentary catches her
irrepressible spirit.
Sat. Dec 27, 12:00pm
DIRECTOR Tim Carroll, GB, 2014, 190 min.
Globe artistic director Mark Rylance and Stephen Fry

THE TEMPEST
DIRECTOR Jeremy Herrin, GB, 2014, 170 min.
Inspired by reports from the first English colonies in the
West Indies and imbued with a spirit of magic and the
supernatural, The Tempest is Shakespeare’s late great masterpiece of forgiveness, generosity and enlightenment.

THE TAMING OF THE SHREW
DIRECTOR Toby Frow, GB, 2013, 182 min.
Shakespeare’s notorious battle of the sexes gives us one of
theatre’s great screwball double-acts in the shape of Katherina and Petruchio – a couple hell-bent on confusing and
outwitting each other right up to the play’s controversial
conclusion. Director Toby Frow gives us “a riotous mixture
of verbal dexterity and slapstick” in an exhilarating production that delighted audiences at the Globe.

THE NEW RIJKSMUSEUM
DIRECTOR Oeke Hoogendijk, Netherlands, 2013, 90 min.
“‘It’s just a renovation,” quips Rijksmuseum director Wim
Pijbes. “How complicated can it be?” Well, that was in
2006. Seven years later, as the work finally came to completion, he had his answer. This fascinating documentary
(cut down from the original 4 hour version that showed
on Dutch TV and at VIFF two years ago) sheds light on
one of the jewels of the art world, the home to countless
