Modesty, besides being a virtue is one of the twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit. As a fruit of the Holy Spirit, modesty is a human work performed with the help of the Holy Spirit. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1997) states that the fruits of the Spirit are perfections that the Holy Spirit forms in us as the first fruits of eternal glory. The tradition of the Church lists twelve of them: charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, chastity. (no. 1832) The Catechism of the Catholic Church, then, lists modesty as one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. In the Latin Vulgate Bible, St. Paul’s letter to the Galatians lists the twelve fruits in the following way: “But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy, peace, patience, benignity, goodness, longanimity, mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity. Against such there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23). Catholic Lady and Gentleman Be modest: Never be haughty. If you do some splendid thing for which you are congratulated, you could rightly say, “Thank you very much. I am grateful to God for giving me the gifts for His honor and glory.” Practice modesty in all situations. “Your love must be genuine. Hate what is wrong, and hold to what is right. Be affectionate in your love for the brotherhood, eager to show one another honor” (Romans 12:9-11). “Women . . . are to dress modestly and sensibly in proper clothes, . . . not [in] expensive clothing, but, as is appropriate for women who profess to be religious, and with good actions” (I Timothy 2:9,10). Modesty is a virtue. You are modest when you exercise restraint in your behavior, i.e., in your external actions, dress and conversation. The sins against modesty are lewdness, coarseness, and boorishness, on the one hand; and excessive refinement, and delicacy on the other. Modesty promotes agreeable manners and harmonious relations. Modesty is decency. It inspires one’s choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is even a risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is discreet. The annual MotherDaughter Retreat took place at the Oratory and it was a huge success. The mothers and their daughters were welcomed with refreshments followed by prayer, song, and reflections on their spiritual relationship with their Creator and the precious gift of their daughters. The activities that followed focused on getting acquainted not only with the other mothers and daughters present but they also afforded mothers the opportunity to discovery more about their own offspring and vice versa. Communication skills were also used by each mother-daughter team in conversations about the relationship between each other and how it can be improved. This was clearly a time of enjoyment and will surely produce pleasant memories for the attendees. The retreat ended with a presentation and talk by Fr. Juan on strategies which can be used by mothers to inspire healthy relationships with not only their daughters but also all members of the family. The Mother-Daughter Retreat was directed by Fr. Juan with the assistance of religion teachers: Mrs. L. Maldonado, Mrs. M. Torres, Mrs. S. Pocecco, and Mrs. A.
