FEBRUARY 1, 2015, FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
He commands even the
unclean spirits and
they obey him. (Mark
1:27)
So many people—
especially those living
in the West—have dismissed the existence of evil
spirits. But that’s a big mistake. Evil spirits are real,
and they are always at work, trying to destroy our
faith and the Church as a whole.
Now, few people are actually possessed by evil
spirits, but most of us experience what we may call
spiritual harassment from them. Think of how Peter
tried to convince Jesus not to go to the cross, only to
hear him reply, “Get behind me, Satan!” (Matthew
16:23). Clearly, Peter wasn’t possessed. Still, the
devil had gotten into his mind and suggested
thoughts that were contrary to God’s plan.
Satan wants to confuse and mislead us, just as he
did to Peter. So how do we guard our minds? By
trying our best to agree with Jesus. Of course, we
should always feel free to ask questions, just as
Mary did when she asked the angel, “How can this
be?” (Luke 1:34). That’s a lot different from
fighting Jesus or going against what he clearly tells
us. When we think we know better than Jesus, we
are opening ourselves up to the devil’s harassment.
Peter learned how to overcome this harassment,
and so can we. The first thing we need to do is
acknowledge that it is going on and take action. So
when you wake up each morning, ask the Lord to
protect you and your loved ones. Call on the name
of Jesus, pray to St. Michael the Archangel, or
simply mark yourself with the sign of the cross.
Second, keep building your faith. Soak yourself in
the Scriptures. Read up-building spiritual books.
Focus on Jesus during Mass. Nothing helps us stay
clear-minded more than faith.
Finally, believe that Jesus rules the universe. He
wants to help you be alert to the divisive whispers
of the devil. Trust that Jesus, who lives in you, is far
stronger than “the one who is in the world” (1 John
4:4).
“Lord, help me to stand firm and resist the devil’s
temptations today.”

Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal
The official kickoff of the 2015
Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal
has begun. There are so many reasons
why the Appeal is important, not only to
those in need in the Archdiocese, but
also to us, in our parish community. Your support of the
Appeal helps countless men & women, & it sustains the fabric
of our ministries throughout our parishes. If you have not
already, you will be receiving a letter from Cardinal Dolan,
along with some material that illustrates the deep importance
of the Cardinal’s Appeal to our community. Part of being a
steward means living with trust in God’s generosity & a
responsible tending of that which God has entrusted to us.
Cardinal Dolan is asking you to participate by making a gift to
this important annual initiative. The Archdiocesan goal for
the 2015 Appeal is $20,000,000. Our individual parish goal is
$151,000. I ask that you prayerfully consider your gift, fill out
the pledge card & mail it in. If you need time to think about
your gift, you will be given an opportunity to make your
pledge during Mass on Commitment Weekend, March 14th &
15th. Thank you so much for your support of the Appeal &
please pray for its success at our parish.”

FILM NITE Presents
Babette's Feast (102 min)
This Danish film, won the 1987
Academy Award for Best Foreign
Language Film, is based on a
short story by Isak Dinesen.
Written and directed by Gabriel
Axel, this literate & lovely-tolook-at film compels us to
meditate upon the needs of the flesh & the needs of the spirit.
It is also about choices, talent, gratitude, friendship, grace, &
hope. In the 1800s, two elderly maiden ladies (Birgitte
Federspiel & Bodil Kjer) reside in remote Jutland, where they
have sacrificed their lives, romantic possibilities, & personal
happiness in order to continue their long-dead father's
religious ministry to the small flock he served. One of the
women's youthful admirers sends to them a Frenchwoman,
Babette (Stéphane Audran), whose husband & son have been
killed in France & who has fled her homeland lest she meet the
same fate. One day, however, Babette receives a letter: she
has won a lottery and is now, by village standards, a wealthy
woman. Knowing that her new wealth will mean her return to
France, the sisters grant her wish that she be allowed to
prepare a truly French meal for them & the members of their
tiny congregation. The meal & the evening it is served is
indeed a night to remember--but not for reasons that might be
expected, for Babette's feast proves to be food for both body &
soul, & is ultimately her gift of love to the women who took
her in & the villagers who have been so kind to her. The film
is extraordinary in every way, meticulous in detail yet not
overpowering in its presentation of them. Countless physical
things lift us up and help us to better recognize the higher
things of God. We cannot dismiss that we are both material
and eternal, in the world and hopeful for Heaven, breaking
bread and meeting Christ. This is one of the favorite movies of
Pope Francis. February 5th, 7.00 PM: Nativity Center.
