A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR - PARISH MISSION 2015
To whom do we give authority over our lives?
The word authority is mentioned twice in today’s Gospel. We read that the people in the synagogue in
Capernaum “were astonished’ at the teaching of Jesus because “he taught them as one having authority…”
In this passage, Saint Mark does not go into great detail about what Jesus taught. But we do hear that his
listeners were captivated, inspired, indeed, “astonished” at what Jesus had to say. Why were they so swept
up by the Lord’s teaching? Why was he able to speak with such authority?
Part of the answer can be found in the incident that took place in the synagogue that very day. After Mark
tells us of the people being so enthralled by Jesus’ authority, he goes on to tell us the story of how Jesus
rebuked an unclean spirit that had possessed a man. Jesus silences the demon and drives it out. The man is
healed. In other words, the heart of Our Lord’s teaching was grounded in the power of his healing love, his
power over evil. This power was the source of his authority. It’s the authority of God’s love. It’s a love that
can bring healing and hope to a hurting world. Jesus’ teaching has authority because he himself is the
embodiment of God’s love in all its fullness, and the power he possesses can drive out every expression of
evil and darkness that may confront us in this world.
In the passage immediately before today’s Gospel, Jesus proclaims, “This is the time of fulfillment. The
kingdom of God is at hand…Come follow me…” His authority over evil, when it is embraced and
exercised by all of us as his followers, can bring about a kingdom of justice and peace in which the hungry
are fed, the sick comforted, the stranger welcomed, and those in sorrow lifted up to the hope of
resurrection. No wonder they were “astonished” by his authority, and inspired, captivated, and swept up by
this prophetic teacher. As they came to understand and be inspired by Jesus, how could they not give this
man authority over their minds and hearts?
Perhaps a modern day version of this same phenomenon can be found in Pope Francis. Since our Holy
Father was elected almost two years ago, his words and his actions have captured the hearts and engaged
the minds of countless people throughout the world. He has lifted the spirits of Christians and people of
good will everywhere. (Last week, over six million people came to pray the Eucharist with Francis in the
Philippines.) His special devotion and commitment to the poor along with the enthusiastic joy that radiates
from this man has made headlines and prompted lively dialogue on many important issues. Christians and
non-Christians, believers and non-believers have been touched and moved by our new leader. Pope Francis
is indeed exercising a kind of authority over us. It’s an authority of service, a life-giving authority. It’s a
power that we willingly give to the Holy Father and to his message that can renew us and help us to
rediscover the roots of our enthusiasm for the Gospel message. And isn’t his influence, his power, his
authority so strong because it is such a brilliant reflection of Christ? Could it be that Francis is causing such
a stir because he and his message are touching a basic hunger and goodness that can be found in every
human person?
To whom do we give authority over our lives? Some people and some structures of government necessarily
exercise authority over us so that we may live in a free and lawful society, and in order that the rights of all
may be protected. We are required to submit to the laws of the land for order and peace. But when it comes
to the person of Christ, God has given us the marvelous gift of free will so that we may say yes or no to the
authority of Jesus. We must choose the life of love that Jesus offers us. In faith, we are invited to give Jesus
and his message of self-sacrificing love full authority in our thoughts and actions. The decision to do so is
our way to true joy and our only path to true peace.

A Message from Sister Lisa
The cold temperatures of the last few weeks have
brought MANY requests for fuel assistance to our office in
the last several days. Even families eligible for HEAP (the
federal Home Energy Assistance Program) may have a
significant wait until their applications are approved. For
instance, “Bob,” a retired man, applied in November to
DSS for HEAP; he is eligible, but has had no response to
his application — OR his numerous telephone calls. Last
week he came in to use our phone to make additional calls
since he had no more minutes on his mobile phone. The
lines were so clogged that the calls were simply disconnected
— not even a busy tone! We have intervened via email
with the Commissioner’s office on his behalf, but it will
take at least another week before it can be approved.
Nevertheless, because of your generous contributions to
our monthly collections, we are able to help this and other
families by arranging for delivery of home heating fuel
directly with one of the local companies. Your generosity
allows us to keep their homes heated until DSS responds. I
cannot express the depth of my gratitude for your
compassion toward our brothers and sisters who struggle.
You probably do not know how much every donation you
give means to those we serve.
So I again thank you for being a source of God’s
mercy and love; by your generous response you
transform our world into a place of wholeness, hope and
abundant grace. God bless you all.
Please pray for:
For our brothers and sisters who are homeless in this
desperate cold, that they might find warmth
and welcome from caring people who reflect God’s
compassionate love.

A MESSAGE ON CONSECRATED LIFE FROM THE BISHOP
February 1, 2015
World Day for Consecrated Life
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Pope Francis has declared 2015 as the Year of Consecrated Life in the Universal
Church. We give thanks and honor the women and men in consecrated life who
have served and are serving here in our great Diocese of Rockville Centre.
The life of this local Church has been blessed through the mission and ministry of
these dedicated women and men who are responding to God’s call to each of them
to follow Jesus as vowed religious. As religious, their commitment to a life of prayer,
lived in community and expressed through their ministry in the Church, witnesses to
their response to God’s love for them. Their vowed commitment to God and service
to the Church is a gift for all of us.
As we move through this Year of Consecrated Life I invite each of you to take
whatever opportunities are presented to say “thanks” to the religious who are here
in our Diocese, to remember them in your prayers and to pray that other generous
young people respond to God’s call to join them as religious sisters, brothers and
priests.
I join my prayers with yours in thanksgiving for their lives of prayer and service and
in petition that God will bless each of the religious who are part of our Diocese with
gifts of grace, hope and peace as they witness to God’s great love. I ask Mary,
Mother of the Church, to continue to inspire each of them as they live a life of “Yes”
to God’s call.
Faithfully yours in Christ,
Bishop of Rockville Centre

FAMILY FAITH FORMATION
In today’s Gospel Jesus enters a synagogue in
the town of Capernaum, (ka per noom) in
northern Israel on the shore of the sea of
Galilee. It was the Sabbath and as was the
custom, learned Jewish men would go to the
local synagogue to read the words of the
scriptures, if they couldn’t read to tell them
from memory. They would then teach about the
meaning of these words for the people. The
interesting thing about Jesus teaching was that
he taught with ‘authority’. That is as one who is
holy, as speaking with the approval and power
that comes from God. He also makes an evil
spirit leave a man who was in the synagogue,
questioning Jesus’ presence there and calling
him “the Holy One of God”. The people were
quite amazed by this!
Questions –
1. God is always trying to reach out to us in
all sorts of ways. We don’t always listen.
Do you think the people in the synagogue
listened when the man with the evil
spirit called Jesus the “Holy One of
God”?
2. How or when do you hear or think God is
telling you something?
