New interim fire chief Dave Patterson With the start of a new year, the Grant County Fire District 8 has a new interim fire chief. Former chief Dave Hargroves did not have his contract renewed effective Dec. 31. Since then former deputy chief Dave Patterson has been appointed interim chief. Fire commission chair Paul Parker explained that the commission decided to designate it an interim position so Patterson could settle in and see if he wants the job and the commission could evaluate his work. Parker said that in June or July the commission will decide if Patterson will be the fulltime chief based on how he performs and whether he wants the position. MATTAWA AREA NEWS Wahluke JH Dugan is Coach of the Year Until he won the award, Joel Dugan said he’d never heard of it. But it is real, and Wahluke Junior High head football coach Joel Dugan was named District 5 Coach of the Year for Junior High and Middle School. The award is from the Washington State Football Coaches Association. Dugan explained that he found out he’d won the award when athletic director Cody Marlow made the surprise announcement during a staff meeting. “The award ceremony (last week in Everett) was incredibly fun. I got to meet lots of brilliant coaches from all over the state. My entire family, fiancée, sister, mom, dad, and grandparents were there to share it with me,” he said. And Tom Cable of the Seattle Seahawks was the keynote speaker. Dugan said he gave an amazing speech about teamwork and the Seahawks philosophy. “It was very moving, especially with the Super Bowl inching closer. Tom Cable even took a moment to say congratulations and give a few words of advice,” he said. Dugan has been involved in the local football program since he came to Wahluke five years ago. This is his third year as head coach. He teaches US History for 8th Grade and is advisor for the ASB/Leadership class. They sponsor carnivals, manage the student store and hold fundraises for Offer made to reserve officer A Moses Lake man has been tentatively offered a position as a Mattawa police officer. After two others that Chief John Turley had asked didn’t work out, he said he has offered the job to Jordan Miers, 28, of Moses Lake. Miers has been through the Grant County Reserve Academy and has been working as a reserve for Grant County for two years. His father, a 28 year police veteran, is currently a sergeant with the Moses Lake Police Department. Miers has accepted the job, Turley said, explaining the tentative designation is a formality while a background check, psychological, and polygraph test are administered. Turley said he was presented three names by the civil service and chose Miers because he already has some experience and has taken a significant step, reserve academy, toward being a police officer. If it all works out, Miers will start the first part of March. He will need to attend state law enforcement academy, but Turley said that may wait until after the summer season is over. Local 12th Man found in the Panama Canal There’s Seahawk mania all over and on Monday, the MAN received this photo of 12th Man pride from the Panama Canal. Pictured is Mattawa City Councilmember Brian Berghout, right, and his brother Chris, displaying the 12th Man flag while visiting the Panama Canal this week. The brothers are there thanks to Brian who was awarded the trip for sales he made through his insurance company. And in case you haven’t heard, the Seattle Seahawks are playing in the Super Bowl Sunday against the New England Patriots. MAN THE Wednesday Joel Dugan holds his Coach of the Year Award at the award ceremony in Everett last week. His parents are shown sitting with him. Dugan coaches Wahluke Junior High football. things like Russell Wilson’s Pass the Peace Foundation. So why does he think he was nominated and then selected for the Coach of the Year? “I got this award because of my awesome football players and their efforts and my assistant coaches Cole Haberman, Mark Hull, and Corey Zirker. And most of all the parents who let their sons and daughters play,” he said. Vantage to Pomona line meetings this week The Bureau of Land Management will be holding two public hearings this week for residents to view and discuss the new supplemental draft environmental impact statement on the proposed power line in the area known as the Vantage to Pomona Heights project. The local meeting will be held this Wed., Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. at the Sagebrush Senior Center. It is believed most local residents will be happier with the new proposed line than the original. The new line runs on the west side of the Columbia River, mostly on the Yakima Training Center. The meetings held almost exactly two years ago identified a route that mostly traveled locally through the Wahluke Slope farmland. See complete information this paper on page 7. Note there is a different email address listed for the BLM on this week’s advertisement on page 7. Pizza Party March 5 The Mattawa Desert Aire Lions Club performs and contributes to many community service activities in the area and they are actively seeking more people to join them. An evening of getting together at a pizza party is planned for March 5 at Tiddaly Diddalys. The evening, open to anyone in the community who wants to know more about what the Lions are, will be held at 6 p.m. Of course pizza will be served. There is no commitment required and no cost, just an interest in learning more about the Lions Club. The next main community event the Lions are involved in is the annual crab feed. March 21 is the date for this year’s event at the Sagebrush Senior Center. Along with all-youcan-eat crab, a live auction will be held. Watch for more information about the event in the MAN. The next meeting for the Lions is Feb. 12 at 7:30 a.m. at Tumbleweeds. Anyone interested is welcome to attend. Page 2, Mattawa Area News, Jan. 28, 2015 Karl Edie The Seahawks were founded in 1976. I was born in 1977 to a SeBy The 3 Edieotos ahawks family. I remember Seahawk sheets on my bed, Seahawks stuffed animals in my arms and tons of Seahawk shirts on Sunday afternoons. I blindly followed the Seahawks because my dad did and I grew up hating the Raiders and the Broncos - not really knowing why, just knew that my dad hated them so they must be bad. I especially remember a few games where my dad would record them on the VCR and save them and watch them later - specifically a few great games where we annihilated John Elway. I remember Steve Largent’s record-breaking touchdown and I remember a lot of Dave Krieg interceptions. I remember the Kingdome and I remember my Uncle Kal’s Seahawk fan-van. To be honest I never really liked watching football that much. It was too fast and I didn’t understand it and I couldn’t find where the ball was. I didn’t start really playing until high school, and I didn’t start really watching to understand and following where we were in our division till college. But my dad was a Seahawk fan and so I was too. So in all of those great memories what I really remember most and most often is sitting with my dad and watching the games (even if I didn’t understand what was going on) with a bowl of popcorn and cheering for the Hawks. So to me, the Hawks mean family. Thanks for the memories Dad. Go Hawks. Game Bawl Keith Edie My first memory involving the Seahawks? To be hon- est I don’t have a “first memory” simply because I cannot remember a time when the Hawks weren’t a part of my life. I’ve always been a 12. I ran receiving routes in the front yard because I wanted to grow up and be Steve Largent. I collected the Seattle Seahawk trading cards that the Washington State Crime Prevention Association put together. I still have them in a cigar box in the drawer of my nightstand! To be in this position, going to back-to-back Super Bowls, is literally the fulfillment of a 10-year-olds dream, as he caught post patterns from his dad. Win or lose, the Seahawks have taken us on an incredible ride and I believe it’s really only starting. D.K. Edie While trying to find ways to pass the time waiting for the start of Super Bowl XLIX, I started thinking about my love for all things football. I first started playing football on the school play ground at lunch time while attending Bedford Grade School in Iowa. In Iowa, like a lot of mid-west states, football was king right along with corn. We were not very organized then, just picking sides and chasing each other around, pretending we were Bedford Bulldogs, the local High School team. My interest actually started before that. I don’t remem- ber the year, but I do remember watching my dad watching football on TV. Because he watched it, I wanted to watch it. My dad had two favorite teams, the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings. I watched the first Super Bowl, played Jan. 15, 1967, between Green Bay and the Kansas City Chiefs. I watched SB II with him as well and watched Green Bay win back-to-back Super Bowls. That first Super Bowl was held the year after we moved out to Washington. By then I had been a Green Bay fan for five years while dad had been a fan for over 18 years. Nothing changed until 1976, 10 years after leaving Iowa. The birth of the Seattle Seahawks struck a chord in my being and I became a fan for life from the very start. It took Dad a while longer to make the switch but he eventually saw the light and came over. We watched the Zorn to Largent show that was the Hawk’s early years with my boys, his grandsons. Good years. Now, he is watching from the same seats Russell Wilson’s dad is watching from, and we all are anticipating those back-to-back Super Bowl victories. C-ya at the game. Go Hawks. Editor’s Note: Good memories. Four generations, so far, of Edies yelling Go Hawks! Cholinesterase testing XLIX Special! Seahawks Re-Pete! We will be open from 11am to 4pm on Sunday, Feb. 1 for phone and takeout orders only. Get your Super Bowl party subs, pizza and wings here! We will open starting at 11 a.m. for food orders & pickup. Get your orders in, we’ll make the food, and you can just enjoy the game. It’s all over the place, Hawk fever. Fifth graders Maritza Cruz and Marilu Lara show their Seahawk spirit in front of a Morris Schott Elementary classroom door they worked on. The fifth graders painted the Hawk Nation logo shown behind them. Decorations and Hawk pride can be found all through the Wahluke School District ahead of Super Bowl XLIX this Sunday. 932 -5020 509.932.4602 AmericA on WednesdAys At ephrAtA, WA. As much as 40 percent of sight can be lost without a person noticing. Although the most common forms primarily affect the middle-aged and elderly, glaucoma can affect people of all ages Glaucoma affects almost three million Americans according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation. “Glaucoma begins by attacking peripheral vision,” Dr. Jason Bleazard, CBHA EyeCare Director, said. Objects might appear slightly blurry. Patients try to compensate by squinting or turning the head to focus better. These changes may seem minor at first. “However,” warns Dr. Bleazard, “glaucoma can accelerate quickly, causing eyesight to rapidly and irreversibly deteriorate.” Glaucoma occurs when the fluids that nourish the eye do not drain properly resulting in a build-up of fluids which increases pressure on the eye. This causes damage to the optic nerve. “When patients come in for their annual vision check-up, we evaluate the health of their eyes and clarity of vision,” Dr. Bleazard said. “We also can detect chronic and systemic diseases such as glaucoma, diabetes and even hypertension (high blood pressure).” Glaucoma cannot be prevented, but, if diagnosed and treated early, it can be controlled. The American Optometric Association recommends that you start the New Year off right by setting up an appointment with your eye doctor. To schedule an appointment with either Dr. Bleazard or Dr. Amanda Gable, call 509-488- 5256. Ahmann was suspended recently for two games and that suspension has been extended to Feb. 6. According to the Warrior schedule, the last game of the regular season is Feb 6. In related news, the MAN was contacted regarding a statement in last week’s paper about a parent meeting held regarding the basketball program. The MAN was told by parents that they did not believe that the meeting was called by parents, but by the district. A statement from the district regarding the meeting stated, “The district decided to schedule and coordinate the meeting after receiving concerns from various parents about the basketball program, including one request for a meeting.” It was following the meeting that Ahmann was suspended for two games.
