Welcome to St. Helena Church
Our Church is a center for spiritual growth, where
positive attitudes are developed, where good people
become better, where hurts are healed, where lessons are
learned, where friendships are developed, where marriages
restless find peace, where love is alive, where God is
understood, where the Holy Spirit leads, and where Jesus
Christ is Lord. Together, let us spread the message of the
Gospel to our neighbors.

Blessing of Throats
The Feast of St. Blaise will be celebrated on February 3rd. Blessing of the throats will take
place after all the Masses all of this weekend masses with the following prayer: “Through the
intercession of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, may you be delivered from all illness of the throat and
all other evils. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Old Palms
In preparation for Ash Wednesday, we ask that you bring your old palms to church and drop
them off in the baskets in the back of the Church.
Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday is February 18th and the gateway to Lent. We have forty precious days to
open ourselves up most particularly to God, to examine ourselves in the presence of one who
created us, knows us, and loves us. We have forty days to face ourselves and learn to not be afraid
of our sinfulness. We are dust, and to dust we shall return, but with God’s grace we can learn to live
this life more fully, embracing our sinfulness, allowing God to transform us.
We are accepting new student applications for grades Pre- K to 8th grade. Please contact the
school at (215) 549-2947 for information on how to apply. We encourage prospective families
to check out our open house on Sunday, January 25th from 12-2 pm to learn more about our
school.
Current families, save your child's spot for next school year by re-enrolling early. Re-enrollment
is open on TADS and there is a reduced fee if you re-enroll before March 15th.
Do you know anyone who is interested in volunteering? Please contact the office at (215) 5492947 for a volunteer application and requirements.

Chapter 1: Created For Joy
“Love is Our Mission” because love is our origin and destiny. Created in the image of God, a
human being is created for communion, which means that loving God and neighbor is the reason for our
existence. Catholics believe these things because of Jesus, our bedrock and cornerstone. Jesus suffered
and yet persevered in love; he was crucified and yet rose again. In Jesus, we believe that the Creator of
the universe became one of us, revealing not only who God is, but also who we are created to be and
become. In a world of anxiety and doubt, Jesus is trustworthy. When we follow Jesus, body and soul,
even when it hurts and requires sacrifice, we are living lives of integrity, for only in living this way will
our lives coincide with the reason for our existence. This brings us great joy. We sin and stumble, but
the God we meet in Christ is faithful even when we are not. God’s forgiveness is a gift that gives us
back to ourselves, enabling us to embrace our mission and destiny anew. Catholic sacraments and moral
teachings serve this destiny. The sacraments are a genuine encounter with Christ, while the moral
teachings show what Christ-like love looks like in particular situations. Catholic life summons us to
heroism and adventure even in ordinary daily life. The world is charged with the beauty and grace of
God, and neighbors who need our love and kindness are all around us.
Our new project is to benefit our frail and elderly parishioners, especially our new members
from Incarnation Church. We are making plans to purchase a van that would allow the frail,
elderly and others of St. Helena Parish needing transportation to participate in Sunday Liturgy.
Our Vietnamese Knights of Columbus have volunteered to drive and pick-up those in need of
transportation. To make this possible, we invite your participation in helping to sell or
purchase our 50/50 eVANgelization Van 50/50 tickets. Tickets are available through Sr.
Sophie or contact the rectory. Cost is $5.00 a ticket or 5 for $20.00. Drawing will take place on
April 11, 2015. From the proceeds: 50% will go to the purchase of the van, 25% to the first
prize winner, 15% to the second prize winner, and 10% to the third prize winner.
Health Tip for Those with Breathing Problems
Cold weather can cause bronchospasms, constriction in your airways, this makes it
harder to get air in and out of your lungs. So what to do? Use a scarf to cover both your
nose and mouth. The scarf will trap moisture and also warm the air before it gets into
your airways. Try it and see the difference.

Today we celebrate the 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In our Gospel for today, we come to
the first miracle story recorded by Mark. Mark is not concerned with stories about Jesus’ birth, but
about establishing his identity as the Son of God. Already in chapter 1 Jesus’ powerful actions had
drawn followers and enemies and caused his reputation to spread throughout Galilee. For Mark and the
Christians of the first century the “unclean spirit” and other “demons” represented evil, mysterious
powers hostile to God. Anything that separates us from God is destructive. Sickness, violence and evil
lead us away from the Giver of life. Yet out of these struggles new life can come. In today’s text, the
unclean spirit reveals Jesus’ identity and tries to distract him from his mission, but through the demon’s
recognition of Jesus, others were led to faith. Jesus’ words are not only authoritative, but they effect
what they say. Everyone was amazed by his teaching and power.
Tuesday is the feast of St. Blaise. In the United States the annual blessing of throats is a
traditional sign of the struggle against illness in the life of the Christian. This blessing is ordinarily
given during Mass or a celebration of the word of God on February 3, the memorial of Saint Blaise. For
your convenience, we will bless throats after all the Masses this weekend.
February 7 is World Day for Consecrated Life, a day to honor those who have dedicated their
life to our Lord by living a consecrated life. Let us remember in a special way all Sister of Saint Joseph
who served in Saint Helena Parish over these past 90 years. We remember in a special way Sister
Sophie Yondura, Sister Marie Albert, Sister Joan Callahan of the Sisters of Saint Joseph who are
currently serving God’s people of St. Helena Parish and Sister Anna Marie of the Sisters of Mercy.
May our Lord continue to bless them for their generous response to God’s call to live a
consecrated life!
Finally, as we prepare for Ash Wednesday and Lent, I would like to ask you to return your
old palms so that we can burn them for the ashes on Ash Wednesday. There will be two baskets on
the table in the back of church to collect the old palms. The baskets will be there from this weekend
until February 15th. Enjoy your week and pray for NO snow. Thanks for reading!
