Weekly Envelopes
We request that all of our parishioners be registered.
We ask also that our parishioners use envelopes to
support Corpus Christi financially on a regular basis.
If we see that envelopes are not being used to support
the parish regularly, we contact the envelope company
and the envelopes are no longer sent through the US
mail system except at Christmas and Easter. Using
envelopes consistently is the best way for a parish to
plan prudently as far as the budget and expenses are
concerned. You are also able to support Corpus
Christi electronically now. If you are interested in this
type of giving, please let us know. A few parishioners
choose to do this and our weekly income through
regular collections is a few hundred dollars higher
each week. Thank you!

4th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Corpus Christi Church
I did indeed get to Washington, D.C. on January 22 nd and so I
devote my column this week to my participation in the 42 nd
annual March for Life which marks the Supreme Court decision
that gave us abortion on demand in all fifty states of the union.
As you could easily tell, we had a virtual news black-out of
the event. Most mainstream news outlets never mentioned it or
only gave scant coverage such as Long Island’s own Newsday
which buried it in the middle of the newspaper on January 23 rd.
It’s not every day that thousands (estimates range from a low of
100,000 to a high of 300,000) of protestors, peacefully
conducting themselves, show up anywhere in our country, but
that’s what happens every year as pro-life citizens listen first to
inspirational speeches beginning at 12 noon on the National Mall
and then walk to Capitol Hill to visit with elected public officials
in their offices. You would think that this event, making use of
lawful public assembly with the constitutionally guaranteed right
to address our government would catch the attention of the news
arbiters in our nation. The pro-life movement doesn’t get much
favorable attention in the media because the avatars in the news
business want all American citizens to think as they do, that is, to
be permissive on abortion because it’s all about “choice.” And
one “choice,” they say, is as good as another choice. Well, no,
that is completely wrongheaded if you accept the objectivity of
truth.
In the bulletin of two weeks ago, I indicated that it was my
intention to go to the office of Rep. Kathleen Rice (D, Garden
City). I got there and spoke with a legislative assistant to the
Congresswoman because, as I said previously, pro-choice elected
officials are never in their offices on January 22 nd. It so happened
this year that the House was in session and the Congresswoman
was about to cast a vote on the re-authorization of the Hyde
Amendment. The Hyde Amendment is named after the bill’s
chief sponsor, Henry Hyde, an Illinois Congressman who served
15 terms in the House and died in 2007. What the Hyde
Amendment (1976) does is restrict the use of federal monies to
procure an abortion except in cases of rape and incest. The reauthorization passed (242-179) and Rep. Rice voted against it.
So hers was a “pro-choice” vote and against the pro-life position.
In my conversation with the legislative assistant, I inquired if
the Congresswoman would support any legislation to reduce the
number of abortions and whether she was a supporter of Planned
Parenthood or not. On the first question, I was told the
Congresswoman is “independent.” I would characterize that as
non-responsive. On the second question, I was informed the
Congresswoman does indeed support Planned Parenthood. I
asked the legislative assistant to check with the Congresswoman
if she would consider supporting H.R. 36, the Pain-Capable
Unborn Child Protection Act which was pulled by the Speaker at
the last moment. This measure, when it is introduced, will ban
abortions after twenty (20) weeks. We’ll have to wait and see
when this piece of legislation comes up for a vote in the House
of Representatives how Rep. Rice votes then.
In the meantime, I appeal to you to get involved in supporting
legislation to protect unborn life. As I discussed in my column of
January 18th, witness on behalf of the culture of life is
preeminently a prerogative of lay men and women. No one else
is going to do it – only you! Step up and do something now!

Bulletin Announcements
The Memorial of Saint Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, is Tuesday,
February 3rd. There will a blessing of the throats after both
morning Masses on that day (7:30 AM and 9:00 AM).
We encourage you to look at the materials on our bulletin boards
near the doors of the church. All kinds of informative and
inspirational items are found there throughout the year.
Tomorrow, the 2nd of February, is the Feast of the Lord’s
Presentation. In recent years, we have observed the Feast of the
Lord’s Presentation as a World Day of Prayer for Consecrated
Life. This observance is extended in 2015 for the entirety of the
year at the request of Pope Francis. We ask you to remember
those men and women who live the consecrated life (by
canonically professing the evangelical counsels of poverty,
chastity and obedience) in your prayers.
In the spring when the weather is better, we will return with the
adult faith enrichment series called Catholicism by Fr. Robert
Barron. It will run for five (5) weeks. If circumstances allow, we
will have afternoon and evening sessions. Continue to watch the
bulletin for more details over the next few weeks and months.
If you would like to be a lector at weekend Masses, we have
need of your talent and time. Any new lector must be qualified
and trained before assuming this important liturgical role. If you
are interested, kindly see Msgr. Batule.
Altar servers are reminded to sign in on the sign-in sheet posted
on the bulletin board in the sacristy each time you serve. They
are also reminded that shoes are worn when serving at the altar.
Sneakers are not permissible.
The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated at Corpus
Christi during the Easter season. Already, we have received
requests at the rectory for sponsor forms to be filled out. Kindly
leave your form with the secretary and a phone number so you
can be called about picking up your completed form. We remind
you that an eligible sponsor is one who has reached the age of
sixteen (16), has completed Christian initiation (has celebrated
Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist) and regularly attends
Mass.
Kindly remember that Lighthouse Catholic Media has a kiosk in
the lobby of the church seven (7) days a week with Catholic CDs
and books for purchase at modest prices. We encourage you to
browse the selections before or after Mass. There are some very
good offerings to assist you in deepening your spiritual life, and
with Lent already on the horizon, you might find your Lenten
devotion this year right on the kiosk.
We ask you to take up a generous and sacrificial support of
Corpus Christi in the three areas of time, talent, and treasure. We
ask further that you commit yourself to all three areas that the
Body of Christ may be built up by worship, education and
service. All three elements – worship, education and service –
are constitutive of our Catholic faith. The way to honor all three
dimensions is by being good stewards of time, talent and
treasure. Some of you may be able to get away to warmer
climates for extended periods in the winter. Please don’t forget
Corpus Christi in your absence. Before leaving or upon
returning, we ask that you submit your envelopes to assist in the
support of our temporalities here. We are very appreciative of
your consideration. (Continued on the next page)

Corpus Christi Church
We exhort all of our parishioners to support Corpus Christi
financially to the best of their ability. As you know,
inclement weather is always a problem in January and
February especially, and this most assuredly cuts into Mass
attendance and our collections in the early part of every
year. If the weather prevents you from getting out to Mass,
we would be appreciative if you send us your envelopes
through the regular mail or had them dropped off at the
rectory. We need to maintain the current pace of offerings
to the parish in order to exercise a prudent stewardship of
our resources.
Ash Wednesday starts our Lenten observance this year on
February 18th. Please consult the bulletin next weekend for
the schedule of Masses and prayer services wherein ashes
will be distributed.
At the start of Lent this year, we make available to our
parishioners a booklet with day by day reflections to guide
your pilgrimage of conversion. The booklet is produced by
Word on Fire and you can pick up your own copy – free of
charge - in the lobby of the church on Ash Wednesday.

Catholics for Religious Freedom
Preserving religious freedom for all
Words Matter!
Religious freedom watchdog groups are concerned that
elected officials are changing terminology. They often
refer to America's "freedom of worship" rather than the
comprehensive term, "freedom of religion".
“Freedom of Religion”, our first and most fundamental
God-given right, guarantees all Americans the freedom to
practice our religion in the public square, and to live out
our conscientiously held beliefs.
“Freedom of Worship”, however, means the right to pray
within the confines of a place or designated building of
worship or to privately believe. It also excludes the right
to practice our faith in families and communities as well as
our education, charitable and healing missions.
Mission Statement
So that First Amendment Religious Freedom may be
practiced and preserved for generations yet unborn it is
essential that Americans understand this freedom and the
circumstances from which it came. “Catholics For
Freedom of Religion” provides resources to assist laity to
educate and advocate on a non-partisan basis for First
Amendment Freedom of Religion…how rare it is, how
dearly it was purchased for us and how quickly it can be
lost. (www.cffor.org)
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we
see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you
something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and
invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did
we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The
King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for
one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’
Matthew 25:37-40

Domingo IV do Tempo Comum
Corpus Christi Church
Eles buscam a
