Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 1, 2015
Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before the LORD
who made us.
-- Psalm 95:6
DID YOU KNOW. . .
that Pope Francis is seeking your input?
Yes! In preparation for the “Synod on Marriage and the Family” which will
take place this October in Rome, the Bishops of the world have been asked
by Pope Francis to listen to the concerns and the suggestions of the Faithful
throughout the world, and to bring those concerns and suggestions to the
Synod!
Our Bishop Kicanas has scheduled four such “listening sessions” for our
Diocese, and St. Andrew’s will host the “listening session” for our Cochise
County Vicariate – next Saturday afternoon from 2:00-4:00 PM in Kino
Hall!
We are inviting ALL parishioners to come and listen and share with our
Bishop! Whatever your status – single, married, divorced, widowed, with
children, without children – this is your opportunity to participate in a
world-wide dialog on Marriage and Family, which will, under the guidance
of the Holy Spirit, help the Synod Fathers and Lay Consultators, hear the
Voice of the Lord speaking to our times!
This is a very exciting opportunity for ALL of us to participate in a very
important process of consultation! Bring your insights and concerns to
share with our Bishop next Saturday afternoon!
Following the “listening session” from 2:00-4:00, Bishop Kicanas will
celebrate the 5:00PM Saturday Mass here at St. Andrew’s and then join us
after Mass as the Guest Speaker at the Annual Catholic Appeal Dinner,
hosted by our Knights of Columbus!
That our Bishop is coming to spend next Saturday with us, tell us
how much he values our Parish – values YOU – as “co-workers in the
vineyard”! Please plan on joining him for any and all of his visit!

CATHOLIC QUIZ –
This week’s
Question: “What is a
‘Papal (or Apostolic)
Bull’?”
The answer to
last week’s Question: “Who is
the ‘Black Pope’?” That’s the
nickname traditionally given
to the Superior General of the
Jesuits (the Society of JESUS)
in recognition of his influence
and power within the Church as
the head of the largest religious
Order! ‘Black’ refers to the color
of his cassock, in contrast to the
white cassock traditionally worn
by the Pope! The name today is
anachronistic – especially since
Pope Francis is a member of
the Society of JESUS – the first
“Jesuit Pope”!
(If you would like to be as wellinformed as the “Quiz Master”
– pick up a copy of the Catholic
Source Book, available in the
Parish Office, for only $15!)
On Saturday, February 7, 2015 Catholics from churches in
Cochise and Graham Greenlee Counties are invited to participate in a listening session on Marriage and Family Life in
preparation for the Synod called for by Pope
Francis that will be held in October, 2015.
The Holy Father has asked all bishops to conduct listening
sessions in their diocese. Bishop Gerald Kicanas, Bishop
of Tucson, invites all Catholics from Cochise and Graham
Greenlee Counties to attend a gathering to discuss the questions that will be the topic of the Synod.
The Listening Session will be held on SATURDAY, FEB-
RUARY 7, 2015 AT ST. ANDREW PARISH IN
SIERRA VISTA BEGINNING AT 2:00 PM AND
ENDING AT 4:00 PM.
St. Andrew Parish is located at 800 Taylor Dr.

Nurses Notes- Making Choices
We tend to prepare for everything in life – college, marriage, raising a family, retirement, and so on. It’s very
easy to carry on conversations about these important high points in our lives. Unfortunately, we hardly ever have
conversations about how we want to be cared for at the end of our lives.
When you are being treated for cancer, there may come a time when the current treatments are no longer
working and a suggestion is made to try a stronger, more aggressive treatment. This new treatment, you are told, could
extend your life by about six months but it will have negative side effects which will lead to a poorer quality of life. Or,
perhaps, you have been treated aggressively for cancer in the recent past but the cancer has returned and is more
aggressive than before. You may have to decide, based on what options the doctor presents to you, whether or not you
want to start another round of treatment or simply let the disease run its natural course.
Facing these kind of decisions may force you and your loved ones to have to talk about those end of life
decisions. More specifically, whether to continue treatment or to stop. At this point, many people become torn
between wanting to spend more time with their loved ones and fearing the effects of any new treatment, especially if
the most recent treatment was difficult to handle. Also, many Catholics may worry about making a choice because they
don’t want to go against the teachings of the Catholic Church in regards to refusing treatment.
It may be a comfort to know that the Church does not believe in prolonging the suffering of a dying person. In
other words, if a particular therapy is going to be administered to someone with a terminal disease but this therapy has
little chance of success or will be too burdensome for the patient, the patient may refuse the treatment and allow
natural death to take its course. The main point in this decision process is that you are not willing to cause death, you
are simply accepting that death cannot be prevented.
Only you know how you feel and when “enough is enough” so if anyone tries to encourage you to continue with
treatments that are burdensome for you; or if doctors want to “try something new” when other treatments are not
working, you need to be assertive. Ask them to explain the treatment, its side effects, and what the prognosis will be
with and without that particular treatment. Base your decision on those facts AND on how you feel and what you feel
you can handle. Should you choose not to continue, use your assertiveness and let everyone know you no longer want
treatment. On the other hand, should you make the decision to try a new therapy, those involved need to understand
that if it comes to a point where the treatment becomes too much of a burden, you may decide to forego the treatment
before it is completed. As much as you love and care for your family and friends, the choice must be yours and what’s
best for you!
If and when you do come to this point, hospice should always be the next step. Making a decision about when is
the right time for hospice is something we may all one day face. The earlier you and your loved ones have this
conversation, the better the chances are that you will be able to stay where you are comfortable, whether it’s at home,
in assisted living, or a skilled nursing facility. Talking about it ahead of time, while you are still in relatively good health, is
the single most important thing you can do. The goal of hospice care is to maximize the quality of life so if you use
hospice services early in the course of an illness you will have more time to plan the type of care you need so that it is
focused on your needs and the needs of your family.
Hospice provides medical, psychological, and spiritual support when cancer therapy is either no longer
controlling the disease or when the therapy has become so difficult for you that your quality of life is less than optimal.
Hospice care helps you remain as comfortable as possible near the end of life by focusing on controlling pain and other
symptoms of illness. Their focus is on caring, not curing, and their goal is to neither hasten nor postpone death. Hospice
care can be discontinued if your condition improves or the cancer goes into remission.
Yet, far too often, people wait too long to contact hospice or doctors refer them to hospice too late.
Unfortunately the reason for this may be because of the concept people have of hospice. Hospice is often viewed as a
last resort—something to try when all medical methods have been exhausted. If a doctor suggests hospice, patients and
families often feel he or she is giving up on helping the patient to get better. The most important thing for you and your
loved ones to remember when choosing hospice is that it doesn’t mean you are giving up, it simply means the goal of
your treatment has changed. Your care has gone from treating the disease to treating the person.
Every moment of life is precious – especially at the end-of-life. Starting the conversation early can ensure that
your choices are heard. It also means that when time becomes short, it can be spent doing what you most enjoy and not
making last-minute decisions. Talk to your loved one about your wishes so you will be prepared.
Blessings to All, Connie Sayers, Your Parish Nurse
Ecuador Mission
I want to thank all of you for your prayer support during my recent mission trip to
Ecuador.
A bit anxious after an unexpected one day delay, I put myself in God’s hands
and arrived safely in Ecuador, meeting Fr. Abraham Guerrero, his uncle and his
nephew.
After a rest, we journeyed nine hours by car to the city of Esmeraldas, located
in the west-central part of the country. We celebrated Mass and had a reception
with some 100 children present; then a sit-down reunion dinner with music and
dancing.
After a welcome night of rest, we left for the city of Santo Domingo and presented
a check to Bishop Julio Terán. He was most grateful for the generosity of St.
Andrew parishioners, which will be put to use serving a wide spectrum of local
needs from roof repairs; a meal program for needy children; catechesis; cultural
preservation, as well as meeting daily needs of clothing, food and medicine for
about 60 children.
After visiting several places in Santo Domingo, we toured other areas in the
Diocese then traveled on to Quito to visit the Cathedral of St. Francis, and then a
site called “El Panecillo,” a hill of volcanic origin upon which is situated a statue of
The Virgin of el Panecillo, the patroness of Ecuador. The grand statue is 41 meters
high and offers a splendid view of the city of Quito from an interior passage.
We prayed together at stops along our journey, enjoyed the variety of sacred art,
had a meal with religious sisters from one of the Quito parishes then traveled on
again. The roads are generally windy and mist-enclosed. On a curve we skidded
off the highway, prevented from going down the 60-foot drop by a fencepost!
We gave thanks to God Who saved us from injury and serious damage to the uninsured rental vehicle.
It was a whirlwind visit that nevertheless was fruitful and prayer-filled.
Thank you again for both your financial and spiritual support.
May God bless you all.

como la reparación de techos; programa de comida para los niños necesitados; catequesis;
no asegurado.
Fue una visita relámpago que sin embargo fue fructífera y llena de oración .
Gracias de nuevo por tanto su apoyo financiero y espiritual.
Que Dios los bendiga a todos .

JOURNEY OF FAITH – FEBRUARY 1, 2015
Compiled for you by Sister Joellen Kohlmann, DRE

FEBRUARY SAINTS
Mark 1:21-28
Feb. 2nd: The Presentation of the Lord
“All were amazed and asked one
another, ‘What is this? A new
teaching with authority. He
commands even the unclean spirits
and they obey him’” Mk1:27
Jesus is teaching in the
synagogue, and people are
impressed with his sense of
authority. Jesus is “real.” He isn’t
preachy or arrogant or
standoffish or “churchy.” He
speaks at their level, he makes
sense, he believes in what he is
saying, and he doesn’t want to
play games with prestige or
status.
Jesus cleaned the unclean. He
recognized the unclean, he knew
what clean and unclean were all
about, and he took action and
made a difference.
Jesus was always consistent in his
teaching. There were no flip-flops.
His actions always followed and
fit with his words.
What about us? What about our
actions? We know actions truly
speak louder than words, what
are we teaching in our
everyday actions?
...To our children?
…To our co-workers?
…To our community?
Under Mosaic law, a new mother was ritually “unclean” for forty
days after giving birth. She then entered the temple with her child,
bringing an offering of either a lamb and a dove or pigeon, or two
doves or pigeons, to be cleansed by prayers. This feast began in the
fourth-century Jerusalem and quickly spread to Rome. In the
Middle Ages it was called Candlemas and celebrated with a
procession and the blessing of candles.
Feb. 3rd: St. Blaise and St. Ansgar
St. Blaise, a Bishop, was martyred during the persecutions in the
early fourth century. Tradition tells us he cured a boy who was
choking to death on a fish bone. Therefore Blaise has long been
connected with miracle cures for illnesses of the throat.
St. Ansgar was a French bishop and a Benedictine monk. He was
very successful in missionary trips to Denmark and Sweden.
Because of his success he has been known as the Apostle of the
North.
Feb. 5th: St. Agatha
St. Agatha suffered martyrdom in the Decian persecutions during
the mid-third century. Tradition states she was put into a brothel
to force her to give up her faith but she remained pure and then
was tortured until she died. It is also believed that she stilled the
eruption of Mt. Etna the year after her death and so people ask for
her intercession against fire.
Feb. 6th: St. Paul Miki and Companion
St. Paul Miki and
twenty-five
priests, religious,
and dedicated
laypeople were
put to death in
Nagasaki, Japan
on this day in
1597, by being
suspended on
crosses and
speared in their
hearts. Though Japan was then closed to the outside world for over
300 years, the faith survived without priests. St. Paul is said to
have forgiven his executioners as Jesus had done.
