SPORTS LINE-UP
Challenger Baseball
“This program allows kids who wouldn’t
normally be able to play an organized
sport the opportunity to do so. Every time
they come out here, they get to do it to
the best of their ability,” said Hibshman,
whose interest was peaked in the early
1990s when he was looking for a program
for his child. For more information,
contact Randy Hibsman at 954-345-9329.
Miracle League Baseball
Equine-Assisted Activities (EAA)
Formerly Horses and Handicapped, Equine-Assisted
Activities (EAA) are widely recognized as one of
the most beneficial forms of recreational therapy
that people with special needs can receive. EAA is
a private, non-profit organization serving children
and adults with physical, cognitive and emotional
challenges. Located in Tradewinds Park, Coconut
Creek, Florida, we offer a multi-faceted program of
equine-assisted activities. For more information:
(954) 974-2007 or [email protected].
Swimming Championships
The Miracle League provides children with their first chance at
sportsmanship and teamwork. Players receive a full uniform, provided
by the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Volunteer buddies will be
with each Miracle player on the field, affording parents the experience
to watch their kids play instead of being in the trenches.
For more information: Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital, 954-2765597 or [email protected].
Parkland Buddy Sports
Parkland Buddy Sports provides quality sports programming for
children and young adults with special needs, in an empowering,
challenging and loving environment where the emphasis is on having
fun, making friends and realizing full potential. Our volunteers, both
students and adults, learn patience, tolerance and the ability of one
person to change the life of another. They also learn that by creating an
environment void of physical, social and cultural barriers there are “NO
LIMITS”. For more information: 954-753-9430.
Special Olympics
The mission of Special Olympics Florida is to provide year-round
sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports
for people with intellectual disabilities who wish to participate, giving
them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate
courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills,
and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and
the community. For more information: (954) 262-2150.
Young Dragons Martial Arts

“Our swimmers wouldn’t have realized a dream
if it wasn’t for the scholarships awarded by
BGCDSO to Lee Scharf, Julie Finlon, Diego
Sanguinetti. Thank you all so much.” Three
local swimmers were part of Team USA at the
7th International Down Syndrome Swimming
Championships held in Mexico November 7th
to 15th 2014. Our swimmers had an amazing
time, bringing home lots of medals. Julie Finlon
with 3 gold, Lee Scharf with 3 bronze and Diego
Sanguinetti with 1 silver in individuals events
and even more in team events. Mexico was a
great experience, meeting and competing with
swimmers from all over the world. All of our
swimmers stepped up and achieved more than
their own expectations. A job well done!!!

Meet Laporte Family
Family Spotlight
“Hollywood locals, Steve and Ronnie Laporte are the proud parents of two
beautiful children; Varvara, 3-1/2 years old and Stefanos, 18 months. They
became members of BGCDSO in 2013, a few months after their son, Stefanos
was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. The journey, although overwhelming at
times, has opened them, their family and friends up to understand a world they
may not have ever been given the opportunity to truly know much about. This diagnosis has also brought positive change in
their mind-set and how they go about their daily lives.
Stefanos is now 18 months and has quite the personality. His favorite pasttime is playing with his big sister Varvara, who
definitely reciprocates the feeling. It’s wonderful to see how they just can’t get enough of each other. Stefanos loves to play
ball, roll cars all over the floor and chase them (he is one fast crawler). At this point, he has become pretty comfortable
maneuvering his walker to get to his destination and is starting to walk holding just one hand. He has a giggle that can light up
the room and gives the best hugs in town. Stefanos is currently home during the day, but keeps busy with all of his therapies.
He began as a baby with feeding issues to a toddler that loves chomping foods and sipping from his sippy cup. Another favorite
activity for Stefanos is popping bubbles, which also happens to be one of his first words. Not the first, but pretty close. “No”
was his first word, which he uses correctly (a little too often). The family definitely feels blessed that BGCDSO is a part of
their lives and feels that they will be enriched through information and social gatherings. They have made new friends, and are
excited to see what the future holds for them. By Ronnie Laporte
HOLIDAY PARTY 2014
The end of 2014 found Broward Gold Coast at a fabulous holiday party at the Signature Grand. We
were thrilled with the attendance of our Gold Coast Family as well as the outpouring of donations for
our raffle prizes. Our raffle was, once again, a huge success, especially for those who went home with
a few extra goodies! As always, the food and dancing far exceeded our expectations and a GREAT
time was had by all! Santa and Mrs. Claus topped off our evening by visiting with each of our families.
Wrapping up 2014 together was a blast, and if the party was a sign of the coming year, we are bound
to have a year full of friends and fun! Thank you to all who attended and have supported us through the years. If you are interested in
viewing our photos, please visit our website at www.bgcdownsyndrome.org. By Mayra Squarini

Are you ready to give up the homework struggle? If so, JAFCO
is here to help with our new Homework Club at the JAFCO
Children’s Ability Center.
Our Homework Club is a program designed to provide homework
help and academic support to children with developmental
disabilities and their typically developing siblings, ages 5 to
22. We provide a safe, structured and fun environment where
children can complete their homework. In order to participate
in this program, the child must be able to work in a small group
setting with other children (three to one ratio). The Homework
Club does not offer individualized tutoring; however we will
ensure that your child receives some individualized assistance in
completing daily homework assignments while reinforcing their
academic strengths, social skills and increasing their confidence
in their ability to complete homework independently.
