Thank you all so much.” Three local swimmers were part of Team USA at the 7th International Down Syndrome Swimming Championships held in Mexico November 7th to 15th 2014. Our swimmers had an amazing time, bringing home lots of medals. Julie Finlon with 3 gold, Lee Scharf with 3 bronze and Diego Sanguinetti with 1 silver in individuals events and even more in team events. Meet Laporte Family Family Spotlight “Hollywood locals, Steve and Ronnie Laporte are the proud parents of two beautiful children; Varvara, 3-1/2 years old and Stefanos, 18 months. They became members of BGCDSO in 2013, a few months after their son, Stefanos was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. The journey, although overwhelming at times, has opened them, their family and friends up to understand a world they may not have ever been given the opportunity to truly know much about. This diagnosis has also brought positive change in their mind-set and how they go about their daily lives. Stefanos is now 18 months and has quite the personality. His favorite pasttime is playing with his big sister Varvara, who definitely reciprocates the feeling. It’s wonderful to see how they just can’t get enough of each other. Stefanos loves to play ball, roll cars all over the floor and chase them (he is one fast crawler). At this point, he has become pretty comfortable maneuvering his walker to get to his destination and is starting to walk holding just one hand. He has a giggle that can light up the room and gives the best hugs in town. Stefanos is currently home during the day, but keeps busy with all of his therapies. He began as a baby with feeding issues to a toddler that loves chomping foods and sipping from his sippy cup. Another favorite activity for Stefanos is popping bubbles, which also happens to be one of his first words. Not the first, but pretty close. “No” was his first word, which he uses correctly (a little too often). The family definitely feels blessed that BGCDSO is a part of their lives and feels that they will be enriched through information and social gatherings. They have made new friends, and are excited to see what the future holds for them. By Ronnie Laporte HOLIDAY PARTY 2014 The end of 2014 found Broward Gold Coast at a fabulous holiday party at the Signature Grand. We were thrilled with the attendance of our Gold Coast Family as well as the outpouring of donations for our raffle prizes. Our raffle was, once again, a huge success, especially for those who went home with a few extra goodies! As always, the food and dancing far exceeded our expectations and a GREAT time was had by all! Santa and Mrs. Claus topped off our evening by visiting with each of our families. Wrapping up 2014 together was a blast, and if the party was a sign of the coming year, we are bound to have a year full of friends and fun! Thank you to all who attended and have supported us through the years. If you are interested in viewing our photos, please visit our website at www.bgcdownsyndrome.org.
