Google Fiber

Google announced plans to extend its fiber services to four
major cities this week, but San Antonio did not make the cut.
Google named nine cities including San Antonio as possible
future expansion sites last year, but the company eventually
chose Raleigh, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Nashville as the next
major metropolitan areas set for fiber services.
Despite the disappointment of some locals, there is still a
possibility for “gigabit” speed internet access could come to
San Antonio without waiting for Google Fiber.

There’s more to the world’s
largest free breakfast than meets
the stomach.
Aside from preparing a vast
array of tasty tacos for those willing to rise and shine long before
the morning sun, the Cowboy
Breakfast provides scholarships
for students enrolled in the culi-
nary arts program at St. Philip’s
College.
As a completely free event,
supplies for the breakfast are either donated or paid for by sponsors. The unused funds go directly
to deserving students.
In 2014, the event donated
$12,000 and in 2013 they donated
$15,000. With tuition for the
culinary arts program standing at
$850, the funds provide scholarships for roughly 15 students.

Frank Salinas, chef instructor and professor at St. Philip’s
College, told La Prensa that the
Cowboy Breakfast is an invaluable source for his students.
“We’re a public school, probably 95 percent of our students are
attended the annual Cowboy
on financial aid, so any supplemental income that they can get
is great,” Salinas said. “There are
a lot of single parents so this helps
with books and tuition.”

“I don’t have a crystal ball, so I can’t say fifteen years
from now what will be best for San Antonio, but we’re pinning a lot of our hopes on Google,” Leticia Ozuna, a Cyber
security specialist and former councilwoman said. “We are
a big enough city, we are a savvy enough city, and we have
enough strong leaders. We need to figure out another way to
change things now.”
Although Google has not shared the criteria used to select
fiber cities, the majority of the cities and states like North
Carolina have regulated their cable and broadband services
through their legislature.
“In San Antonio we are subject to a state legislature that has
completely disempowered public utility and made universal
access more difficult than ever before,” Ozuna said. “We really need to take a hard look at how were staffing our industry,
because we’re stuck with a landscape with competitive offerings like Google.”
After Austin, was named a Google Fiber city in 2013, Grande
Communications and AT&T U-Verse began offering major
upgrades for internet data plans. The competitive landscape
makes widespread internet access more likely for the nation
than ever before.

enter mayoral race

For months, mayoral candidates
have spoken of their plans. A half
dozen made their intentions official at City Hall this Wednesday
filing their notice with City Clerk
Leticia Vacek.
January 28 marked the first day
mayoral and city council candidates could file for a place in the
May 9 election ballot.
Many took advantage of the first
day to make a statement, including
an unexpected fresh face.

Proposed gun laws
Las tres casas y el avestruz face
new challenge
Se ve mal,
muy mal, y
huele a podrido. Los datos
son sencillos:
el presidente
de México, EnJorge Ramos rique Peña Nie­
to, su esposa,
Angélica Rivera, y su secretario
de Hacienda, Luis Videgaray,
compraron casas a empresas
que, más tarde, recibieron millo­
nes de dólares en contratos del
gobierno federal y del estado de
México. La pregunta es: ¿Hubo
contratos del gobierno a cambio
de esas tres casas?
No se trata de una conspira­
ción contra el presidente ni de
un linchamiento público. De lo
que se trata es de posibles actos
de corrupción en las más altas
esferas del gobierno mexicano.
Está claro que Peña Nieto, su
esposa y Videgaray pagaron
o están pagando algo por esas
casas. Ese no es el problema.
El problema es que existe un
clarísimo conflicto de intereses
cuando el que vende o financia
esas casas después recibe contratos gubernamentales multimillonarios.
¿Vendieron las casas por
menos de su valor? ¿Se dieron
en condiciones preferenciales a
cambio de favores? ¿Las financiaron por debajo de las tasas
normales?
La última información del
Wall Street Journal dice que
Peña Nieto compró en el 2005
(cuando era gobernador del estado de México) una casa en la
población de Ixtapan de la Sal
por 372 mil dólares. Después,
entre 2005 y 2011, la empresa de
la familia San Román (CUISA)
–que le vendió la casa– recibió
más de 100 millones de dólares
en contratos del gobierno del estado de México, según el diario.
Además, desde que Peña Nieto
llegó a la presidencia en el 2012,
la empresa de los San Román ha
recibido 11 contratos federales
por unos 40 millones de dólares.
Como si esto fuera poco, Peña
Nieto aparentemente es compadre de uno de los miembros de
la familia San Román; Roberto
San Román Dunne es padrino
de primera comunión de Paulina
Peña, hija del presidente, según
una fotografía publicada por la
revista Quién (aquí está la foto
de la ceremonia religiosa: bit.
ly/1uu1EMZ). Si esto es cierto,
entonces uno de los beneficiados con contratos millonarios
sería compadre del presidente.
¿Más claro? (Lección para niños
de primaria: No se le dan contratos del gobierno a compadres,
socios, familiares y amigos).
Además, está el asunto del
dinero. En una entrevista en el
2009 Peña Nieto me dijo que
no era millonario. (Aquí está la
entrevista: bit.ly/1Jnl9bc) Si no
era millonario, entonces ¿cómo
hizo un funcionario público para
pagar una casa de lujo, valuada
actualmente en más de cinco
millones de pesos?
Este no es, desde luego, el
único conflicto. Anteriormente
el Wall Street Journal había
reportado que el principal
asesor del presidente en materia económica, Luis Videgaray, había comprado en el
2012 una casa en Malinalco a
una empresa –Higa– que luego
obtuvo contratos millonarios
para construir carreteras, un
acueducto y el hangar presidencial. Esa misma empresa es
la que todavía financia una casa
de siete millones de dólares en
Las Lomas a la esposa del presidente Peña Nieto, según reportó
originalmente el sitio Aristegui
Noticias.
Tres casas, tres conflictos de
intereses. Esto no es casualidad
ni error. Delata una práctica
común y recurrente en el círculo
más cercano al presidente. El
gobierno no se va a investigar
a sí mismo y hasta el momento
–¡increíble!– no hay ni siquiera
una investigación en el Congreso. Pero el asunto es grave.
¿Qué pasaría si una investiga­
ción independiente encontrara
culpable a Peña Nieto por co­
rrupción? Estaría obligado a renunciar. Eso explica los grandes
esfuerzos en el Congreso y las
presiones a la prensa para que
no tome fuerza la idea de un proceso legal contra el presidente.
Pero como periodistas estamos obligados a recordar al
indomable Julio Scherer. Alguna vez escribió que “no era
(nuestra) función complacer al
presidente ni servir al gobier­
no”. También advirtió a los
periodistas sobre el “rito de la
adulación al poder” y nunca
“identifico al presidente con la
patria”. Es decir, México es más
importante que la suerte de su
presidente.
Mientras tanto, Peña Nie­
to está escondiendo la cabeza como el avestruz. No ha
dado explicaciones públicas,
ni entrevistas sobre las nuevas
acusaciones. Parece que la estrategia de comunicación de la
presidencia es no exponer más
al presidente, no dejarlo hablar
sin “teleprompter” y apostar por
el olvido y la impunidad. Y el
presidente no se da cuenta del
enorme daño que le está hacien­
do al país, a su gobierno y a su
reputación.
Pero este nuevo escándalo le
ha quitado a Peña Nieto la poca
credibilidad que le quedaba y
ha acabado con su autoridad
moral. ¿Con qué cara puede
un presidente pedirle a los
mexicanos que luchen contra
la corrupción cuando no está
dispuesto a hacerlo él mismo y
en su propia casa?

The Republican controlled Texas
Legislature has hit a bump in the
road, the Chancellor of the University of Texas System, William
McRaven.
Through last year’s campaign,
Republican candidates touted the
2nd Amendment as a foundation of
their candidacy for office.
To many observers, the gun lobby
would be in charge when it came to
passing 2nd Amendment laws in the
current session.
A couple of the measures trending
were “open carry,” which allowed
Texans to carry weapons regardless of whether they carried a CHL,
Concealed Handgun License (CHL).
Also on the agenda of 2nd Amendment advocates was “campus carry.”
Students at the University of Texas
and other state college campuses
could openly carry a weapon.
Both the open carry and campus
carry seem to be on the fast track for
passage in both the House of Representatives and Senate. After all,
an untold number of measures had
already been proposed, including
one from San Antonio State Senator
Donna Campbell.
Then earlier in the week, someone who knows something about
weaponry fired off a strongly worded
letter to each of the state legislators
condemning the idea of campus
carry.
A spokesman for McRaven, Jenny
Caputo, confirms what other highranking educators across the state
are in general agreement concerning
campus carry.
Chancellor McRaven’s letter
raised concerns; among them is
college life and the unknown stress
students live under day in day out.
Among the arguments against
open carry is the way students live
on campus and because people being people, guns can go off without
warning. They believe handguns in
the equation will make the situation
more dangerous.
The strongest argument raised by
McRaven is having civilians armed
and if a situation develops how will
police know who is and who isn’t
the shooter in that situation.
It should be noted that these concerns have been raised in the past,
when the initial Concealed Handgun
License matter first surfaced. Detractors even went so far as to say a wild,
wild, west atmosphere would exist.
Needless to say, that was never
the case and opposition waned,
but it was still there and advocates
continue to fall back on their 2nd
Amendment Rights.
The caveat in the argument is
McRaven, whose credentials in this
matter are unquestionable. He’s a
retired Admiral who commanded
Naval Special Forces as well as
Navy Seals. In fact, his Seal Team
Six were the ones that took out
Osama bin Laden.
That may be why lawmakers are
looking a little more seriously at his
letter over campus carry, and may
even reconsidering their support for
the measure.
More military jobs and families will soon come to S.A.
After several meetings with the
United States
Air Force in
Washington,
Henry Cuellar the San Antonio delegation
and I announced last week that
the U.S. Department of Defense
will add 350 new military and
civilian jobs at Joint Base San
Antonio-Lackland. New personnel is planned to begin arriving
this summer.
These new jobs from the Department of Defense will be
associated with Joint Base San
Antonio’s new Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center
(AFIMSC) headquarters that will
manage logistical functions for
base commands throughout the
world.
This is a great investment not
only for the city of San Antonio
but also for Texas. The new headquarters will spur ripple effects of
benefits for our local economy.
I welcome these new talented
personnel and their families that
will soon be able to call San Antonio – often and proudly referred to
as “Military City, USA” – home.
Joint Base San Antonio competed against four other candidate
locations throughout the country
and was chosen for the new
AFIMSC headquarters by the
Air Force.
After analyzing operational
considerations, installation attributes, and economic and environmental factors, it was decided
that Joint Base San Antonio was
the best location for the new
AFIMSC headquarters, and I
agree whole-heartedly.
The new headquarters is part of
a consolidation by the Air Force
which will standardize processes,
eliminate overhead and drive
down costs.
This project was a collaborative
effort by local and federal agencies that believed there was no
better place in the entire United
States for this new state-of-the-art
military facility than San Antonio.
This headquarters further solidifies San Antonio’s importance
with defense matters.
The United States would not be
a world superpower if we didn’t
have the best military on Earth.
Our military teach our men and
women in uniform to work in
teams, to plan and act decisively,
to maintain calm under pressure
and to lead effectively.
Those are great values that can
be carried over to the labor force.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, many
of our nation’s top leaders and
CEOs either have military backgrounds or were brought up in
military families.
Love of country, humbleness
and discipline are all great traits
that our military service men and
women take to heart and, as a
result, those core values make
our families and communities
stronger.
Recently, Forbes named San
Antonio as one of the top ten
fastest-growing cities in the U.S.
Look around our city and you’ll
see that our community is bustling
with commerce and tourism.
Every year, more and more
families are moving to this great
city that boasts an impressive
history, a culturally-rich heritage
and a family-friendly atmosphere.
Already a haven for culture,
entertainment, higher education,
professional sports and military
operations, San Antonio is an exemplary example of a successful
Texas metropolis and has evolved
into a signature city of America.
One of the pivotal battles of the
Texas Revolution,
the Battle of the
Alamo, was considered by the deLyle Larson fenders at the time
as most significant
to the defense of Texas.
The Alamo was built in the 18th
century by Spanish missionaries
who came with hopes of converting the Indians living in present
day Texas, but it became famous
on an historical day in 1836 when
200 pioneers living in Texas perished defending the fort from the
Mexican army.
Despite major setbacks during
the battle, the Texans and Tejanos
remained courageous, strong and
committed against impossible
odds. Many gave their lives at
the Alamo for the greater cause
of freedom for future generations.
William B. Travis put it best
in his renowned letter: “Liberty
or Death!” Just days later, he
fearlessly fought to his death,
defending the freedom he so
bravely sought.
Across the world, the Alamo is
a symbol of independence, freedom, and liberty. It stands strong
today as a memorial of the men
who made the ultimate sacrifice
on that storied day in 1836. Many
people, regardless of whether they
are from Texas, identify with the
spirit of the battle cry “Remember
the Alamo!”
This Legislative Session, we
introduced a bill that will allow
Texans to take their pride in the
Alamo a step further by purchasing a license plate depicting the
hallowed shrine along with the
word “Remember.”
Like most specialty license
plates, the proceeds of the sale of
the licenses plates will be dedi-
cated to a specific state agency.
In this case, the funds will go to
the Historical Commission, which
will then grant the funds to the
Daughters of the Republic of Texas for various programs, including
Alamo renovations and Texas
history education programs. The
license plate proceeds will help
tell the story of the Alamo to
more than 2 million visitors per
year with enhanced audio visual
technology.
The Daughters of the Republic
of Texas (DRT), an organization
comprised of thousands of women
who are direct descendants of
the original Texas settlers, have
served as custodians of the Alamo
since 1905. The DRT members
also maintain the French Legation Museum in Austin, the DRT
Library in San Antonio, and the
Republic of Texas Museum in
Austin.
We look forward to pursuing
this legislation, particularly on the
heels of the major contribution of
Alamo artifacts by Phil Collins,
a famous music artist. Collins,
who has used wealth to purchase
Alamo artifacts over the last several years, decided to donate the
majority of his collection to the
Alamo. His collection includes
a rifle owned by Davy Crockett
and an original Jim Bowie knife.
Collins’ recent donation, said to
be worth tens of millions of dollars, has increased awareness of
the Alamo worldwide.
The Alamo shrine is one of
Texas’ most legendary treasures.
It holds 300 years of history and
has a special place in the heart of
every Texan and with the passage
of this bill, individual Texans will
be able to express their support
of the cradle of independence by
acquiring the Alamo specialty
license plate.
A new way to ‘Remember the Alamo’

History
Month.
We can
agree or
disagree
that as a

have come a long way from slavery to refining the cultural history
of the numerous contributions of
Black Americans to our country.
It is also assumed that we have
not completed that journey in
melding all Americans of various
skin tone into that melting pot
of diverse cultures and all races.
Only then can we say we have
truly “overcome.”
Two weeks ago, we celebrated
the 28th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March down a 2.5
mile stretch from Martin Luther
King Jr. Academy on Martin
Luther King Avenue to the Pit-
tman- Sullivan Park off N. New
Braunfels. The street was lined
with thousands of cheering spectators.
A tape of Dr. King’s “I Have
a Dream” speech could be heard
blaring for half a mile down the
road as participants marched
along the avenue to the final destination of the park. At PittmanSullivan, gospel singers sang
and various speakers of all backgrounds addressed the crowd.
Some of those speakers included the first African-American
Mayor of San Antonio, Ivy Taylor, the first African-American
Fire Chief Charles Hood and the
first African-American County
Commissioner Tommy Calvert.
This year’s attendance set a
record as the crowd was estimated
at over 175,000 marchers and
participants.
Last year the crowd was estimated just over 100,000. History
reminds us of the 1954 Brown
v. Board of Education landmark
Supreme Court decision that
declared state laws establishing
separate public school for black
and white students unconstitutional. In most places at that time
it included Hispanic students as
well. I was 8 years old at the time.
As a former teacher who also
taught a history class or two over
the years, I covered some of those
statistics and information in the
classroom. The triumph paved
the way for integration and was
a major victory of the civil rights
movement at the time.
As one who has seen major
changes in my life time from
segregation to the turmoil of the
‘60s to the eventual national Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
that was signed into law in 1983,
I am still amazed at our progress.
I remember when President
Ronald Reagan actually signed
it, and it was first observed three
years later. It was officially ob-

Texas lawmakers toured Joint
Base San Antonio Randolph and
Ft. Sam Houston on Thursday to
learn more about the military’s
daily operations and ongoing
missions.

flight simulation similar to the
experiences of the military pilots
preparing for battle.
“We’re an important part of this
community because Texas is a
great home for the military as you
know,” Col. Drichta said. “We are
blessed with the support of our
community, and ensuring that the
Texas legislators are aware and
stay active in that is an important
part of keeping that community.”
Rep. Lyle Larson, District 122,
has initiated mission and base
tours for the last two legislative
sessions, insisting that the visits
are important for lawmakers.
“The more they understand,
the more assistance we can get
from the state to protect these
bases from base realignment and
closure,” Larson said. “The prospect of that happening sometime
at the end of 2015 and the middle
of 2016 is pretty high.”

ongoing encroachment issues at
several bases, including Randolph

vida y no las sabes leer”, comentó Naredo. “Haz de cuenta
que estás leyendo un libro en un
idioma que no conoces”.
El concurso inició la semana
pasada con Fit Camp, un campamento de seis días donde los
participantes se reunieron con
médicos, nutricionistas y entrenadores físicos para establecer
metas reales y crear una rutina
efectiva.
Asimismo, el campamento
también sirvió para que los
participantes compartieran sus
experiencias.
“Unas historias eran tristes,
otras inspiradoras, la mía es
simplemente el resultado de malas decisiones que he tomado”,
expresó el arquitecto.
Hasta hace cuatro años, el
atletismo siempre había formado
una parte importante en su vida.
Naredo corría maratones, participaba en triatlones y hasta
tiene una cinta negra en Taekwondo.
Pero llegó un momento en su
vida donde perdió el control.
“Empecé a tener un poquito de
estrés y en vez de refugiarme en
el deporte, que es lo que hubiera
hecho en el pasado, me refugié
en la comida”, comentó Naredo.
Al principio, el cambio parecía
relativamente controlable.
“Fui subiendo de a poquito,
primero fueron cinco libras, de
repente fueron otras cinco, y
pensé, el día que yo quiera las
bajo, de repente fueron 20 libras,
y pensé, no te preocupes 20 libras
ya las has bajado antes”, recordó
Naredo.
Dos años después, el médico le
detectó unos bultos en la tiroides.
“Me dijeron que podría ser
cáncer”, comentó Naredo. “Son

quieres escuchar, pero me puse
mi máscara de valiente y actué
como que no me importaba, y
empecé a refugiarme muy fuerte
en la comida”.
Seis meses después de esa
visita médica, aumentó 35 libras.
“Llegué a pesar 307 libras y
pensé: se acabó, hasta aquí es el
límite”, relató Naredo.
En ese momento, encontró la

Down Showdown por Internet.
“Normalmente me gusta hacer
las cosas a mi modo, no me gusta
mostrarme débil y mucho menos
pedir ayuda”, comentó Naredo.
“En este caso dije: ‘¿bueno, qué
pasa si hago las cosas diferentes?’, y hasta ahorita estoy muy
contento”.
Naredo tiene como meta bajar
85 libras y afirma que, si no las
baja para el final del concurso,

Pre-K 4 SA to enroll 1,700
Library’s Digital Library
students for 2015-16 school year
Community Project expands

The San Antonio Public Library
(SAPL) has recently expanded
its Digital Library Community
Project to six new community
locations.
The project, which began in
July 2014, makes access to the
Library’s digital resources even
easier by allowing library card
holders to download and access
millions of eBooks, eAudiobooks,
movies and music titles via QR
codes on specially designed
wallpaper.
The project also includes three
digital library kiosks, installed
in late 2014, at the San Antonio
International Airport that also act
as a gateway to SAPL’s extensive Digital Library. The project
is funded by the San Antonio
Public Library Foundation and
the Friends of the San Antonio
Public Library.
The newest locations of the
wallpaper include the Henry B.
Gonzalez Convention Center (200
E. Market St.), Barshop Jewish
Community Center (12500 NW
Military), South Side Lions Community Center (3100 Hiawatha),
Woodard Community Center
(1011 Locke Road), Lions Field
Adult and Senior Center (2809
Broadway) and The Ronald R.
Darner Parks and Recreation

Library card holders are able
to easily access SAPL’s entire
digital collection by using their
smart phone or WiFi enabled
mobile device to scan the QR
code on the book, movie or song
title of their choice, or access the
entire collection with the general
QR code. Titles download to the
mobile device and are ready to
access instantly (unless the title
is on hold). Visitors who do not
have a SAPL Library Card are
able to utilize the wallpaper to
access public domain titles.

innovative ways on how we can
deliver our services to the San
Antonio Community,” Ramiro

at four Education Centers across
the city. Online and phone applications for the full-day, highquality prekindergarten program
will be accepted beginning
Monday, Feb. 2, 2015.
Applications submitted online
through April 5 will be eligible
for a position in the priority lottery selection to be held on April
8. Additional applications will
continue to be accepted through
August in order to fill available
spaces. The new school year
opens Aug. 24, 2015.
Pre-K 4 SA enrolled 1,500
students in the fall of 2014, filling its North, South, East and
West Education Centers. The
East and West centers were
added last year, fulfilling the
program’s plan to serve young
learners in all areas of San
Antonio.
The program is free for qualified students who meet state
eligibility requirements and live
within a participating school
district. Families who live in San
Antonio but outside a participating school district or families
who do not meet state eligibility
may be accepted on a sliding tuition scale and are encouraged to
apply. All interested families are
urged to apply before the April
5 lottery deadline, to improve
the chance for admission to the
Center of their choice
“We are approaching our third
academic year encouraged by
the success of our students and
families, and enthusiastic about
continuing to strengthen our
relationships with participating
school districts,” said Pre-K 4
SA CEO Kathy Bruck.
An assessment of Pre-K 4 SA
student performance in 2013, the
program’s first academic year,
shows that when compared to
the national sample of approximately 30,000 prekindergarten
students assessed in Teaching
Strategies Gold Assessment,
between 80 percent and 90 percent of Pre-K 4 SA students had
knowledge, skills, and behaviors
meeting or exceeding other children being assessed.
“There is no question that
high-quality early education is
vital to academic success, or that
Pre-K 4 SA is filling a critical
need for enriched curriculum
for hundreds of San Antonio’s
youngest learners,” Bruck said.

to help a lot of people that would
have been left out,” Ozuna added.
The future of internet access in
America could soon be decided at
the federal level. During his State
of the Union Address last week,
President Obama discussed the
Title II service as defined by the
Telecommunications Act, which
authorizes the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)
to regulate the telephone as an
affordable and universal service.
If the FCC votes to reclassify
the internet as a universal service,
the service provider industry
would become a national marketplace, overriding limitations and
decisions made by individual state
legislatures.
Whatever the solution, San Antonio certainly has the means and
the marketplace to meet consumer
demands and create a more competitive marketplace compared to
other cities selected by Google.
“I don’t think these changes
will spell the end to the service
providers as we know it,” Ozuna
said. “What we will see is higher
rates of buildout and public and
private partnerships on lines that
have already been laid. I think this
is a new opportunity for growth
and change.”

Al parecer el nuevo año no
me ha dejado ver que los malos
hábitos hayan desaparecido de la
noche a la mañana. Fumar tabaco
para algunos es “bueno”, para
otros es un “vicio”. Hay fumadores
que después de saborear alguno
de sus platillos favoritos (o bebida alcohólica de su preferencia)
optan por decir que después de un
buen taco, un buen tabaco. Y los
fumadores viciosos que prenden
un cigarro tras otro, a veces, se
dicen a sí mismos: “Este vicio me
está matando y dejando en la ruina.
No puedo dejarlo ya que me hace
sentirme bien mientras inhalo el
humo, solo así puedo dejar el estrés”. Prueba de ello es que a diario
tras finalizar el día laboral, desde
mi automóvil veo, principalmente,
a mujeres conductoras encender un
cigarrillo para entrar a la autopista
y hacerle frente a las presiones que
ocasionan los embotellamientos
automotrices.
Para ambos fumadores les tengo
una gran solución sobre cómo
dejar de fumar. Claro que no es
nada fácil, tengo esa experiencia,
porque a la edad de seis años comencé a fumar, no vine parando
hasta los primeros días del año
1975. No porque me lo haya propuesto como meta de comienzo
del año nuevo, sino porque estuve
encarcelado por un delito que no
cometí.
En mi cuarto día de encierro
mientras se ventilaba mi caso,
estando en el servicio religioso
(dentro de la cárcel del Condado
de Orange, en el sur de California),
de pronto me desvanecí azotando
como regla en el piso que lo bueno
es que estaba alfombrado.
De inmediato me trasladaron a
la enfermería, donde logré recobrar el sentido.
El médico de turno de inmedia­
to me hizo tomar un “cóctel” de
medicamentos que de inmediato
me provocaron una buena reacción
que me puso de buen humor sintiéndome como si hubiese llegado
al paraíso celestial.
En fin, el doctor me comunicó
que el desmayo me vino porque
comenzaba a tener reacciones de
ansiedad y a la vez por la falta de
nicotina en mi sistema nervioso.
El doctor me indicó el mismo
medicamente estaría llegando los
siguientes días a mi celda y que
tenía que continuar tomándolo
hasta que mi caso se solucionara.
Pasaron tres días y mi salud se
vio bastante recuperada, como
recompensa al injusto encierro de
siete días, más la presión físicomental.
Oficialmente se me dio la liber­
tad y disculpas por haberme encarcelado por error del sistema en
el departamento que gira órdenes
de aprensión, ya que era otro José
Franco al que la justicia andaba
buscando.
Sin embargo, no tuve resentimiento con el sistema judicial, ya
que por ese entonces su servidor no
era una perita en dulce, pero estaba
agradecido porque salí libre y con
otra mentalidad, así como en buen
estado de salud.
Desde entonces me forjé la
meta de no volver a fumar tabaco,
lo cual he venido haciendo desde
1975.
Existen programas y medicamentos para dejar de fumar; sin
embargo, fumadores que no han
sufrido alguna enfermedad seria
no se han percatado del daño que
uno mismo se hace.
Recientemente, por televisión
y en la vía pública me di cuenta
que el tabaquismo va en aumento,
a pesar de que la cajetilla de cual­
esquier marca para mí tiene un
costo económico exorbitante.
Cada fumador lo único que hace
es agravar su estado de salud y a
ello se le puede sumar el aumento
en su póliza de seguro médico o
de vida, no importa que cuente con
presupuesto para comprarse las
cajetillas de cigarros de las mejores
o peores marcas.
Caminando por el centro de
San Antonio, en lo que fueron
unos 15 minutos, me topé con
unos cincuenta fumadores que ya
iban y venían o estaban en grupo
conversando. Hasta un individuo
en silla de ruedas, con una mano
impulsaba la rueda izquierda, y
con los dedos de su mano derecha
se llevaba el cigarrillo a su boca
sacando grandes bocanadas de
humo.
Por televisión de un canal que
transmite noticias del mundo his-
pano pude observar en un noticiero
mexicano a eso de las 8:30 a.m.
que en la Ciudad de México una
línea de ciudadanos que se encontraban en espera de que abrieran
oficinas del registro de cartilla
para votar, lo cual es un importante
documento de identificación para
adultos en toda la República Mexicana. Las cámaras en vivo cap-
taron varias escenas en las que se
vieron personas que dejaron hasta
el último día de fecha límite para
acudir a renovar el mencionado
documento, entre ellas observe a
unos cinco ciudadanos fumando.
Algunos, con respeto de los
otros, echaban las bocanadas de
humo hacia arriba para evitar
que el maligno humo de segunda
“mano” le pegase de frente a sus
acompañantes.
Recuerdo que de chico al fumar
por la mañana en el barrio le decíamos “el desayuno del diablo”, ya
que fumar con el estómago vacío
es lo peor que un adicto a la nicotina puede hacer.
Bueno, estas experiencias espero que de algo le sirva a mis
estimados tres lectores. No recomiendo que dejen de fumar,
pueden seguir haciéndolo, es su
vida, pero porque he visto todo
tipo de enfermedades con res­
pecto al tabaquismo –entre ellas
el cáncer que mi madre padeció
a principios de los 80’s del cual
es sobreviviente– sé que tengo la

Small milestones Alzheimer’s Association
equate to giant leaps support available online

The Children’s Shelter provides a continuum of care from
infants to parents. Most notably,
The Children’s Shelter is recognized for the emergency shelter
located on West Woodlawn. If a
child from 5 through 12 years of
age exhibit a need
for mental health
interventions due
to complex trauma
sustained by chronic abuse and neglect, a child may
be referred to The
Children’s Shelter
KCI Residential
Treatment Center
(RTC) to begin
their journey to healing.
When one arrives to visit the
RTC, you might see kids riding bikes, playing basketball
and hearing sounds of laughter.
Unfortunately, these children
have been exposed to abuse and
/or neglect and have been diagnosed with a behavioral or mental
health disorder. When people talk
about mental health, it is often
in hushed voices or reluctance
to discuss the importance of
addressing mental health. Therapeutic child-placing agencies,
such as The Children’s Shelter
understand the importance of getting to the root cause of trauma
and treating the source.
The majority of children at the
RTC have a history of multiple
placements in the foster care
system. Most have a history of
treatment that includes one or
more psychiatric hospitalizations, outpatient counseling,
and treatment with psychotropic
medications. Children referred at
RTC typically manifest frequent
and severe behaviors that pose a
risk to themselves or others, and
that interfere with their daily
functioning at home, school, and
in the community.
While the children reside at the
RTC, they are in the process of
healing from their traumas. Some
of the children at the RTC have
never been to a buffet restaurant
or trick or treating at Halloween.
Other children experience fear of
taking a shower or going to bed,
as that is when they were physically or sexually abused. Experiencing those events can be a bit
overwhelming and a child might
display some negative behaviors.
Using a trauma-informed care
approach, we observe what the
behavior is trying to tell us, rather
than assuming the child is just
being bad.
The trauma-informed approach
is infused in their environment
and individual therapy. Children
learn to develop healthier coping
skills to manage their intense
thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
They develop healthier social
skills so they will be able to
function in a home
environment. We also
work with identified
caregivers to help
them understand the
difference between
what this child has
been exposed to in
their young lives,
rather than what is
wrong with this child.
When we use the approach of look at what this child
has been exposed to, we are able
to see the many strengths, resilience and potential in each child.
In 2014, The Children’s Shelter
provided intensive mental health
treatment for 65 children at our
RTC. The average length of stay
was under a year at 282 days of
care with 71 percent of children
served improved behaviorally
and were discharged to a family
setting. Our goal at The Children’s Shelter is to improve the
well being of each child and to
help them have a brighter future.

los hispanos, cuyo riesgo de
desa­rrollar diabetes y complicaciones provocadas por esta
enfermedad es el doble del que
tienen los blancos no hispanos.
Este nuevo recurso no solo es
útil para los hispanos de los Estados Unidos, sino también para
las personas de habla hispana de
todo el mundo”, comentó Sue
Stout, presidenta y jefa de la
Coalición de Amputados.
La guía proporciona valiosa
información acerca de mejores
opciones o que intentan tomar
decisiones con conocimiento
de causa.
De acuerdo con el Informe
Estadístico Nacional sobre Diabetes del 2014 publicado en el
sitio web de la Asociación Estadounidense para la Diabetes, el
12.8 por ciento de los hispanos
en los Estados Unidos padecen
diabetes, a diferencia del 7.6
por ciento de los blancos no
hispanos.
Según el mismo estudio, los
hispanos tienen una posibilidad
de 2.9 veces mayor de ser hospitalizados por amputaciones
de pie o pierna provocadas por
la diabetes que los blancos no
hispanos.
La versión en español de la
guía no podía ser más oportuna,
puesto que la diabetes de tipo 2 y
sus complicaciones están en aumento entre casi todas las razas
en los Estados Unidos.
“La diabetes de tipo 2 es
una epidemia en nuestro país,
y en tanto la incidencia de la
enfermedad aumenta, también
aumentan las complicaciones.
Debemos llegar a la comunidad
hispana y ofrecerle ayuda para
que las personas puedan vivir
con la pérdida de una extremidad”, agrego Stout.
De acuerdo con la Agencia
de Investigaciones y Calidad
de la Atención Médica, el índice de hospitalizaciones por
amputaciones provocadas por
la diabetes entre los hispanos

Estudio de Comisión Latina sobre Sida
alerta sobre población hispana en sur
EFE - El presidente de la
Comisión Latina del Sida, Gui­
llermo Chacón, cree que para
combatir este mal se debe dar
prioridad a los estados del sur
y urgió a los gobiernos locales
y federales a “romper con la
invisibilidad de los latinos” en
esa región.
“No se puede ignorar a una
población latina desconectada
de servicios de salud, sobre todo
cuando hablamos de indicadores
como el VIH. Hay que crear
conciencia de que nuestras comunidades son invisibles para las
autoridades”, dijo a Efe Chacón,
al referirse a los resultados del
estudio “Latinos en el sur de
EE.UU.: visibles al perforar
manto del estigma”.
Chacón expresó su preocupación porque cerca del 50 por
ciento de los nuevos casos de VIH
en el país se han registrado en los
estados del sur, donde más gente
está muriendo de Sida, pese a que
esa zona agrupa la tercera parte de
la población de la nación, según
el estudio.
Destacó que los latinos comprenden el 24 por ciento de los
nuevos casos en específico de la
zona sur.

En 2011, Alabama, Georgia,
Indiana, Carolina del Sur y Utah
aprobaron leyes antiinmigrantes
siguiendo los pasos a Arizona, acciones que según Chacón, llevan a
los latinos, en su mayo­ría centro y
sudamericanos, a no buscar ayuda
movidos por el miedo.
“El problema principal es el estigma. (Algunos latinos) pueden
estar establecidos allí por muchos
años, pero si se les ve como los
que vienen a destruir, a quitar
empleo a otros, eso los aleja de
buscar ayuda”, agregó Chacón,
quien destacó el gran crecimiento
de esta comunidad en esa región.
“Para poder entender cualquier
condición de salud hay que entender mejor a la comunidad
latina donde quiera que esté.
Nunca nadie podrá desarrollar
estrategias muy efectivas si se
desconocen sus realidades, en
este caso en el sur de EE.UU.,
donde está bien distribuida entre
zonas rurales y urbanas”, argumentó.
El estudio sigue un trabajo de
concienciación que empezó en
2007 con un primer informe y
esperan lograr una mejor comprensión de la comunidad “y la
urgente necesidad de desarrollar
estrategias integrales y diversas
para tratar los retos relacionados a la salud y otras realidades
económicas”.
Georgia, con un 9,1 por ciento
de población latina, es el estado sudista con mayor índice
de población latina, seguido de
Carolina del Norte (8,7%), que
ha registrado un marcado crecimiento en las ciudades de Raleigh
y Charlotte.
Alabama (3,8%), Luisiana
(4,5%), Misisipi (2,6%), Carolina
del Sur (5,2%) y Tenesí (4,8%),

El objetivo de este estudio es
concienciar no solo a la población

a la salud, líderes cívicos y comunitarios.
“Queremos romper con su
invisibilidad, una tarea muy
complicada, conseguir la participación de su liderazgo y generar
estrategias para reducir el estigma
que nuestra comunidad enfrenta”,
argumentó Chacón.
El estudio, que también destaca
misión es “llegar a personas
con pérdida de extremidades y
capacitarlas a través de la educación, el apoyo y la defensa de
sus derechos para que alcancen
su máximo potencial, y promocionar la prevención de la
pérdida de extremidades”.

The hardest decision for any
professional athlete is when it
is time to “pull the plug” on
their careers. Decisions like
these are often for very personal reasons and can become
incredibly difficult.
For example they might
simply have situations in their
families or they’ve lost their
desire for the game. For others, it might just be because
they’ve achieved what they
have wanted and feel no need
to continue.
And, last but not least, it may
be something medical. Athletes sometimes suffer from
either one major career ending
injury or multiple injuries that
just add up, forcing athletes to
end their careers.
For long time Los Angeles
Lakers guard Kobe Bryant,
this may very well be the end.
The Lakers superstar recently
suffered a torn rotator cuff, the
same injury suffered by Spurs
player Patty Mills. This week
he went into surgery to repair
the damaged shoulder.
Bryant averaged 22.3 points
per game this season. Although
leading the team, maybe his
third season-ending injury in
his career might be sign, a sign
telling him he needs to just
retire. This may be the time

pick up players who are considered just as good or close
to being as good due to their
salary cap.
Nobody knows what owner
Jim Buss was thinking by giving him this contract a few
years back, but he clearly decided with his heart instead of
his mind. He has no clue how
to pick up the right players like
his sister Jeanie Buss and his
father, the late Dr. Buss.
Everyone who knows basketball knows Kobe Bryant
is a first year ballot for the
basketball hall of fame. He
has countless sponsorships
that have fed his bank account
generously. He can retire and
live lavishly the rest of his life.
With this injury maybe he
should do his team a favor and
retire and stop trying to carry
this team. It’s time for a new
Lakers era without “The Black

Los Spurs continúan jugando gran
defensiva, lo que les ha guiado a
ganar seis partidos consecutivos en
su sede el AT&T Center.
El pasado miércoles 28 de enero
derrotaron al visitante Hornets de
Charlotte con pizarra de 95 a 86,
poniendo su marca en 29 victorias
por 17 derrotas que los ubica en el
cuarto lugar de la división suroeste.
Spurs a la vez con su triunfo ayudaron
al entrenador en jefe Gregg Popovich
para llegar a su victoria 997 en sus 19
temporadas dirigiendo la franquicia
Silver & Black, lo cual fue su regalo
de cumpleaños, ya que añadió un año
más a su feliz existencia cumpliendo
66 años.
“Para derrotar a los Spurs se
tiene que jugar con inteligencia. Su
estilo defensivo le ha venido dando
poder a su rotación. Hornets estuvo
a punto de superar el marcador
en el tercer periodo, en el cual
estuvimos combatiendo codo con
codo. Sin embargo, la defensiva del
campeón hizo que ellos despegaran
con una ventaja que nunca se
pudo volver a tener oportunidades
de contrarrestar”, expresó Steve

asistencia de 18,581 espectadores,
en el promedio de tiros a la canasta
Hornets en 83 intentos encestó 34,
sumando un 41 por ciento, mientras
que San Antonio se quedaba por
coincidencia con 83 tiros al aro y 35
disparos que hicieron su entrada a la
canasta para un promedio de 42.2
por ciento.
En tiros libres, Charlotte hizo
buenos 12 de 14 encestes con
promedio de 85.7 por ciento, y los
Spurs en 18 disparos hicieron buenos
15, con promedio de 83.3 por ciento.
En el departamento de rebotes, los
Spurs se apoderaron de 49 balones,
39 de ellos defensivos.
Hornets tomó 43 con 35
defensivos. En asistencias ambos
equipos finalizaron empatados con

La banca de Charlotte encestó
20 unidades con 12 aportadas por
el exSpur, el guardia Gary Neal,
quien se encuentra jugando su
quinta temporada en la NBA con un

de importantes rebotes. Su promedio
de 50/50 rebotes por partido y su
estilo ofensivo ante Hornets nos dio
la oportunidad de irnos arriba en el
marcador, previniendo ataques de los
rivales, lo cual no les concedió seguir
sus estrategias de juego. La actuación
de Cory en la segunda mitad del
partido fue bastante bien valorada.
Simplemente él se dedicó a realizar
un gran trabajo en la defensiva”,

El guardia neoyorquino Danny
Green sobrepasó la marca de los 100
disparos triples, ejecutando 4 de 8
tiros fuera del perímetro, aportando
16 unidades para irse de líder en
el equipo en el departamento de
encestes triples.
“Nuestra rotación fue diferente,
ello dio buen resultado. Nos quedan
tres partidos de gran importancia
que se jugaran aquí en San Antonio,
lo cual nos va ayudar para irnos en
buen estado de juego y de salud a
nuestra gira anual del Rodeo. Este
sábado se jugará un gran partido
ante el visitante Clippers de Los

El resfriado de Brady y la gorra de Lynch
acapararon toda la atención previa al Super Bowl

los Patriots de Nueva Inglaterra y
los Seahawks de Seattle se centren
por completo en todo lo que será
la estrategia de cara al partido de
la 49 edición del Super Bowl, que
van a disputar este domingo 1 de
febrero, los protagonistas fueron
el resfriado del mariscal de campo
Tom Brady y la gorra que se puso
el corredor Marshawn Lynch.
Brady confirmó ante los
periodistas que se sentía resfriado,
algo que no pudo ocultar en el
tiempo que duró la conferencia
de prensa, aunque también dijo
que sabe cómo superar este ligero
inconveniente de salud, a base de
remedios caseros.
“Llevo cuatro o cinco días con
esto, mis hijos se enfermaron y mi
esposa está muy enferma ahora
mismo”, declaró Brady, el jugador
clave la ofensiva de los Patriots.
“Me lo traje, desafortunadamente,
hasta Phoenix, pero estaré bien.
Estaré muy bien cuando llegue la
hora de saltar al campo”.
El pasador estelar de los
Patriots, que jugará su sexto Super
Bowl y buscará el cuarto título
de campeón, aseguró que espera
encontrarse al “100 por ciento”
antes del domingo y que no está
“preocupado para nada porque ya
ha superado muchas situaciones

Jeff Gordon en su última temporada de NASCAR

El equipo Hendrick
Motorsport recientemente hizo
el sorpresivo anuncio sobre la
temporada del 2015, la cual será
la última del audaz piloto Jeff
Gordon de tiempo completo en
las competencias de NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series.
Gordon, que ha sido cuatro
veces campeón de la serie,
le dio la noticia al equipo
del Chevrolet 24, el cual ha
conducido exitosamente. Ello
sucedió momentos antes de
anunciarlo ante los medios que
cubren la fuente, indicando que
dudó en usar la palabra “retiro”,
al tiempo que está a punto de
iniciar su temporada 23 como
piloto de tiempo completo en el
circuito de la NASCAR.
En comunicado de prensa
Gordon, expresó lo siguiente.
“Mucho de lo que he hecho
como piloto en mi carrera ha
sido dictado por mis instintos y
con la intención de tomar buenas
decisiones. He estado pensando
mucho en mi futuro durante el
último año y en el descanso
entre temporadas, por lo que he
decidido que 2015 será la última
temporada en que competiré
por el campeonato. No voy
a usar la palabra ‘R’ porque
planeo seguir extremadamente
ocupado en los próximos año
y siempre existe la posibilidad
de que competiré en algunas
carreras especiales, aunque por
el momento no hay nada en
concreto al respecto”.
Gordon, de 43 años de edad,
firmó un contrato de por vida en
1999 con el dueño del equipo,
Rick Hendrick, quien le dio la
oportunidad en la NASCAR al
final de la temporada 1992.
Jeff Gordon en 2014 logró
capturar cuatro victorias, lo
que le dio indicios de tener
capacidad para pelear por el
campeonato y aumentó el total
de sus victorias en la Sprint Cup
a 92, la tercera mayor cantidad
en la historia de la NASCAR,
detrás de Richard Petty (200) y
David Pearson (105).
Su brillante carrera, además de
Brady...
los cuatro campeonatos, incluye
tres victorias en la Daytona 500
y cuatro en la Brickyard 400 en
Indianápolis, con lo que tiene
asegurado su puesto en el Salón
de la Fama de la NASCAR.
Gordon es tercero en la historia
en Pole Positions con 77 y solo
Petty, el desaparecido Dale
Earnhardt (siete cada uno) y
Jimmie Johnson (seis) tienen
más campeonatos.
Él ha ganado carreras en todas
las pistas del calendario actual
de la Sprint Cup, excepto el
Kentucky Speedway.
Antes de la temporada 2014,
Gordon dijo un poco en broma
que si ganaba el campeonato
de la Sprint Cup se retiraría
y aunque avanzó hasta la
penúltima etapa del Chase por
la NASCAR Sprint Cup no pudo
lograrlo. Por lo que ahora su
anuncio fue más serio, aunque
dijo que siempre estará ligado
al automovilismo.
“No me imagino un día en que
no esté cerca del deporte”, dijo
el audaz piloto. “Soy un fanático
de todos los tipos de carreras
del automovilismo, pero en
particular de la NASCAR.
Tenemos un producto fabuloso
y también tengo pasión por
la parte de los negocios y el
éxito a futuro. Como dueño
minoritario en Hendrick
Motorsports, tengo una sociedad
con Rick (Hendrick) y me
mantendré involucrado en un
alto nivel dentro de la compañía
por muchos años. Tener la
oportunidad de continuar
trabajando con el dueño de mi
equipo y la persona que me dio
la primera oportunidad significa
mucho para mí. Él me trajo a un
gran equipo y siempre me ha
apoyado en todos los aspectos”,

Por su parte, Hendrick dijo que
“no hay forma” de cuantificar el
impacto que Gordon ha tenido
en el equipo y en la NASCAR
en general.

dijo Hendrick. “No hay mejor
embajador para nuestro deporte
ni mejor representación de
lo que un campeón debe ser.

que Gordon ha hecho para
nuestra compañía y mi familia,
lo que me entusiasma poder
seguir trabajando con él durante
muchos años como amigos y
socios en los negocios” apuntó
Hendrick.
Gordon comenzó su carrera
a la edad de 5 años tripulando
un mini auto de competencia en
carreras de un cuarto de milla.
Como adolescente compitió
en carreras en pistas de tierra
y asfalto, mudándose de su
casa en Vallejo, California, al
estado de Indiana donde logró
establecerse impulsando su
carrera.
Tras lograr el campeonato en
la series U.S. Auto Club, debutó
en lo que ahora se conoce
como la XFINITY Series de
la NASCAR en 1990 con el
dueño Hugh Connerty, antes de
competir en tiempo completo
con Bill Davis la siguiente
temporada.
Gordon tuvo su primera
temporada de éxito en el año
de 1992 cuando logró tres
victorias y 11 pole positions
con el Ford No.1 de Baby Ruth.
A partir de entonces, su carrera
siguió en ascenso y tras firmar
con Hendrick se ha mantenido
como uno de los mejores de
la NASCAR durante casi dos
décadas.
Brian France, el presidente
y director ejecutivo de la
NASCAR, afirmó que con sus
logros Gordon trascendió en la
NASCAR y que por su brillante
trayectoria será reconocido
como uno de los mejores pilotos
de la historia.
“Hemos disfrutado
viendo crecer a una leyenda
durante más de dos décadas
y continuaremos haciéndolo
durante esta que será su última
temporada de tiempo completo.
Su prolongada excelencia y
clase sin comparación le ha
ganado la admiración de los
fanáticos en todo el mundo.
La noticia que Gordon nos
ha dado es agridulce, pero
comprendemos que es lo mejor
para él”, dijo France.
El máximo ejecutivo de
NASCAR, añadió: “Vamos
a extrañar su pasión por la
competencia cada semana,
pero estoy feliz por Jeff y su
familia, ahora que empiezan
otro capítulo. En nombre de

Gordon, por su lado, tuvo la

Por su parte, el entrenador en
jefe de los Patriots Bill Belichick,
reiteró que el triunfo de su carrera
profesional se debe a los jugadores
y que sentía admiración y respeto
por el equipo de los Seahawks
y en especial por el trabajo
que ha realizado su homólogo
Pete Carroll, a quien en el 2000
sustituyó en los Patriots.
“Lo admiró tanto por su
profesionalidad como persona y
su clase me ha perdido aprender y
crecer como entrenador”, destacó
Belichick.
Mientras la actualidad dentro de
los Seahawks es todo normalidad
con la excepción del polémico
Lynch, su corredor estelar que
ahora se encuentra de nuevo bajo
la posibilidad que la Liga Nacional
de Fútbol Americano (NFL) lo
multe por haberse puesto una gorra
no permitida durante el “Día de la
Prensa”.
La decisión se tomará después
que concluya el Super Bowl
cuando la NFL revise si la gorra
que utilizó Lynch en el evento
oficial era permitida.
Si la liga determina que Lynch
se aprovechó del “Día de la
Prensa” para promover una marca
no aprobada por la NFL, podría
enfrentar una fuerte sanción.
Mientras dentro de la
concentración de los Seahawks
todo es confianza que tanto
su juego ofensivo, pero
especialmente el defensivo serán
claves de nuevo y que podrán
superar a los Patriots.
La defensa de los Seahawks, la
mejor de la NFL durante la toda
la liga, quiere hacer historia al
mantener la misma consistencia
y confianza durante el partido
del Super Bowl y anular a la
gran ofensiva que presentarán los
Patriots con Brady al frente.
Sin embargo, Carroll reiteró
que lo que es más importante es
que el equipo muestre siempre
consistencia durante todo el
partido y tengan la confianza
que pueden superar cualquier
situación adversa que se les
presente ante un rival como los
Patriots, el mejor equipo de la
Conferencia Americana (AFC),
que además llega para ampliar
aún más su dinastía de campeón.
“Debemos demostrar que
somos mejores, pero en el campo
y superar a un rival que lo tiene
todo para ser campeones igual que
nosotros”, agregó Carroll.

At the kick-off of Black History
Month, the San Antonio Public
Library (SAPL) and Mayor Ivy
R. Taylor announced the spring
book choice for the Mayor’s Book
Club, a community-wide read
aimed at cultivating a community
experience through reading and
discussion.
Mayor Taylor’s book choice,
“12 years a Slave,” is the true
story of Solomon Northup, a born
and raised free man who was one
day kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Deep South. The memoir recounts his twelve hard years
as a slave and his extraordinary
journey of resilience, hope, and
the strength of the human spirit
in the face of adversity.
“It is important to remember
our shared past, even when it
is not one to celebrate,” Mayor
Taylor explained. “I can think of
no better way to remind readers
of the horrors of slavery, while
emphasizing the true universality of the human condition; our
common desire for dignity, love
and self-determination.”
Throughout the month, children, teens and adults will have
the opportunity to explore the
themes of the book as well as celebrate Black History Month with
a series of exceptional programs
and events taking place at library Mayor Taylor announces to the students of Providence High

Nacional, Jeh Johnson, afirmó
hoy que las detenciones de
indocumentados que intentaron
cruzar la frontera sur del país en
2014 descendieron hasta su punto
más bajo desde la década de los
años setenta.
"Estas cifras se explican,
sin duda, por las condiciones
económicas en EEUU, México
y América Central, pero también
se debe a la gran inversión
que hemos hecho en seguridad
fronteriza en los últimos 15
años", subrayó Johnson en el
Willson Center, un centro de
estudios de Washington, donde
el secretario evaluó la actividad
de su departamento en 2014 y
expuso sus metas para 2015.
Destacó que los arrestos de
indocumentados en la frontera sur
ha disminuido de manera drástica
desde su punto más alto, en el año
fiscal 2000, cuando se detuvieron
1,6 millones de inmigrantes,
una cifra muy por encima de las
480.000 detenciones realizadas
durante el año fiscal 2014.
"Estamos dando pasos para
arreglar nuestro sistema de
inmigración roto. Algunos dicen
que debíamos de haber esperado
a que el Congreso actuara. No
olvidemos que hicimos eso,
durante años, y que el Congreso
no actuó", subrayó el titular de
Seguridad Nacional.
El presidente, Barack Obama,
sigue pidiendo al Congreso
que "termine el trabajo y
apruebe una ley completa y
bipartidista", aunque ya ha
emitido acciones ejecutivas
para aliviar la situación de los
indocumentados, apuntó el
secretario.
Johnson también se refirió a
los recientes ataques yihadistas
de París y afirmó que hoy en día
"la amenaza del terrorismo es
más descentralizada, más difusa
y más compleja" y que, por eso,
"el policía a pie de calle debe
de ser tan vigilante como el
analista de inteligencia".
"Al Qaeda ya no construye
bombas en secreto -subrayó-,
ahora ha hecho públicos sus
manuales de instrucciones".
Tras los atentados en París,
el Gobierno estadounidense
reforzó la seguridad en edificios
gubernamentales y aeropuertos,
donde aumentó los registros
aleatorios a pasajeros, así como
las inspecciones de las maletas
que introducen en la cabina del
avión.
En lo que se refiere a
ciberseguridad, el secretario
consideró que el país debe
de "ir más allá" con nuevas
normas para castigar estos
delitos y aumentar la seguridad
de las instituciones públicas y
privadas.
Entre las medidas que ha
propuesto la Administración
norteamericana, Johnson
destacó el intercambio de
información entre instituciones
y el aumento de las sanciones
penales para los autores de
delitos cibernéticos.

celebrated Catholic Schools Week

The 43 Catholic schools in
the Archdiocese of San Antonio celebrated this year’s National Catholic Schools Week
with open houses and special
masses, along with student and
community activities.
The events were part of
the nationwide celebration of
Catholic education during the
week of Jan. 25 to Jan. 31.
This year’s theme was “Catholic Schools: Communities of
Faith, Knowledge and Service.” The theme expresses
Catholic schools’ focus on
learning about faith, striving
for high academic standards,
and serving the community.
The week culminated with the
annual Khaki and Plaid Gala
on Jan. 31, benefiting Hope
for the Future and their tuition
assistance program.
Schools across the Archdiocese invited prospective
students, their families and
community residents to visit
to see what each school offers.
Visitors had an opportunity
to learn about programs for
preschoolers to 12th-grade
students, observe classes in
session, and pick up enrollment
materials.
“Catholic Schools Week is
about celebrating to the community the power of a Faith-
based education,” said Marti
West, Superintendent of Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese
of San Antonio. “Our schools
strive for excellence in the
classrooms and teach students
the importance of becoming
service leaders.”
Catholic High Schools boast
a 99 percent graduation rate
with 97 percent going on to
college.
The Class of 2014 earned
over $70 million in college
scholarships and grants, and
logged over 100,000 community service hours.
Catholic Schools Week was
a joint project of the National
Catholic Educational Association and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

inmigrantes. También deseó que el

prayed “A Prayer of Understanding” and “A Prayer for Peace,”
respectively.
In addition, Nettie Hinton, a
parishioner at Holy Redeemer
Catholic Church, introduced the
guest speakers at the service.
Among those who spoke at the
citywide event were members
of the Jewish, Muslim, Baha’i,
Hindu, Sikh, Methodist and Baptist faiths, among others.
“There is nothing that touches
my soul more deeply than when
our bonds of mutual affection
and respect are so visible,” said
Archbishop Gustavo in his opening remarks. “This moment is
truly blessed, because we are
here as peacemakers doing what
we can to call upon the Lord to
strengthen us to heal the deep
and painful wounds that made
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a
necessary prophet for freedom
and dignity of the human person.”
The archbishop expressed his
certainty that on more than one
occasion Dr. King prayed with
these words from John 4:21:
“God give us strength of body
to keep walking for freedom.
God, give us strength to remain
nonviolent, even though we may
face death.”
Archbishop Gustavo explained
that this prayer reflects the courage Dr. King displayed and “the
honorable, nonviolent battles he
fought armed with faith, truth and
a hopeful heart.”
The San Antonio prelate called
on attendees to prayerfully celebrate their gratitude for Dr. King
and all those who have taken
up this just cause, making great
sacrifices for the common good
and the freedom of every person.
“While too many of our brothers
and sisters around the globe and
here in our great nation continue
to suffer from the enslavement of
violence, poverty and hate, Dr.
King remains a beacon of light
and hope that shines through the
lives of those who have carried
on his legacy of courage and
continue on a pilgrimage leading toward peace and harmony
among people of all races, colors
and creeds,” he stressed.
The archbishop lamented that
the fight for personal liberty and
the building of a just society is
not complete. In his recent World
Day of Peace message, Pope
Francis called on everyone to
join together in the work toward
equality, saying, “We know that
God will ask each of us: ‘What
did you do for your brother?’
The globalization of indifference,
which today burdens the lives
of so many of our brothers and
sisters, requires all of us to forge
a new worldwide solidarity and
fraternity capable of giving them
new hope...”
In his first epistle, St. John also
writes, “Whoever does not love a
brother whom he has seen cannot
love God whom he has not seen.
This is the commandment we
have from him; whoever loves
God must also love his brother.”
In his prayer, Archbishop Gustavo called upon the Holy Spirit
to soften the hardened hearts who
sow fear and distrust wherever
they go, blinded by the darkness
of racism and hatred.
“Father, we see around us
the terrible price, and the hard
learned lessons that come when
the civil and human rights of
any person or group are stolen
by those who turn their back
on the commandment of love,”
he prayed. “We, your children,
implore you to help each one of
us to know that we all are first
loved by you, and that you have
called us to share that love with
all of our brothers and sisters.”
The archbishop also gave
thanks as those gathered honored

escuela Sunshine Cottage School
for Deaf Children para disfrutar
la aventura que experimentan los
niños en otras latitudes deslizán-

los alumnos salieron a los prados
de la escuela para encontrar,
con alegría y sorpresa, un manto

Manny documentary wins by split-decision

Boxer Manny Pacquiao fought
twice at the Alamodome in San
Antonio. His last fight against
Jorge Solis was something to
witness.
A flurry of combinations sent
Solis tumbling to the canvas
twice in the eighth round. As he
struggled to beat the count, fans
flung beer bottles, and numerous fights erupted as the arena
descended into chaos.
The passion that Pacquiao
ignites within people, and the
devotion of his followers is indefinable.
The mysticism of the champion
is portrayed in the new documentary “Manny,” a commendable
albeit bland documentary about
the Filipino icon.
Narrated by Liam Neeson, it
follows Manny Pacquiao’s 20year ascent through the ruthless
trials and tribulations of boxing.
The film begins with a silhouette of the fighter’s back bent in
worship, his face marked with
scar tissue from years of brutal
punishment. Sitting on the side of
his bed, his hands are clasped in
prayer, and he ponders, “Why do
I box? Why do I fight?”
The existential questions lead
to the eight-time world champ’s
tedious upbringing in the Philippines.
His rise is arguable the crowning achievement of a documentary that seems to skim the surface
of his accomplishments and
controversies.
Pacquiao was born Dec.17,
1978 in General Santos City in
the midst of civil war. Discontent with the repressive Marcos
regime, the rebellion raged in
the Southern Providences where
Pacquiao lived in poverty within
a small nipa hut, the walls constructed of leaves cut from a
coconut tree.
Desperate for work, he resorted
to fishing, relying on the days
catch for food.
At age 13, he stowed away on
a three-day boat ride to Manila
without money or food. In the
city, he was forced to sleep in
the ring at night in a local boxing
gym. He put heavy objects in his
pocket to make weight, and lied
about his age in order to receive
a boxing license.
Pacquiao often looked outmatched and undersized against
his opponents but managed to
hurl knockout blows consistently
earning the victory against immeasurable odds.
Eventually, he left to the U.S.
for new competition and opportunities. His first stop was a visit to
the Wild Card Gym, where trainer
Freddie Roach helped evolve
Pacquiao’s skills.
“After one round, we clicked
like we knew each other our
whole lives,” Wild Card Gym
trainer Freddie Roach said in
regards to their instant chemistry.
In the history of the sport, great
fighters of the past learned from
trainers they trusted, an unspoken
connection between teacher and
student that brought out the best
from their pupils in the ring.
“You never know when the
next Mohammad Ali is going to
walk through your door,” Roach
said.
Many consider Pacquiao the
only other fighter that rivaled
Muhammad Ali’s popularity and
recognition on a global scale.
When Filipino citizens crowd
streets to watch their fellow countryman, militants and rebels call a
ceasefire, resulting in zero crime
in the country on fight days.
This makes the narrow scope of
the movie even more surprising.
The documentary does not
provide a warts-and-all approach
and is content on portraying
Pacquiao’s career as a glorified
highlight reel.
Although this may prove satisfying for the uninitiated, sports
fans eager for depth will be left
with little to satisfy their appetites.
However, there are revelatory
moments and peaks in the fight
footage.
During his first nationally
televised fight against Lehlohonolo Ledwaba, Pacquiao was
given only given a two-week
notice prior to the bout. The No.
6 ranked Pacquiao was such an
underdog, commentator Jim Lampeley couldn’t pronounce his last
name during the telecast. After
Pacquiao knocked Ledwaba out,
the HBO broadcast crew admitted
to never seeing or hearing about
him before, but professed their
admiration for his fighting style.
Victories over Marco Antonio
Barrera and Erik Morales propelled Pacquiao into the national
spotlight, and his dominance over
Oscar De La Hoya made him a
global icon.
One of the greatest rivalries in
the sport between Juan Manuel
Marquez and Pacquiao is only
briefly touched upon. In their
fourth meeting, Pacquiao was

It was the most devastating
knock-out of the 21st century,
and led most to believe that Pacquiao’s career was over.
The Pacquiao camp claimed
there were numerous factors contributing to the loss, in particular
his political career and marital
troubles.
He carried these mental stigmas
into the ring with him in the last
two Marquez fights but what exactly those distractions were, the
viewer is only left with a vague
notion.
The film has a difficult time
criticizing Pacquiao. He seems
like a genuinely nice guy, and
his positivity and devotion is a
difficult guise to penetrate. As he
enters the ring, he walks through
the crowd beaming, and exhibits
the natural aura of a man not
afraid to lose.
In a particularly amusing anecdote, talk show host Jimmy
Kimmel recalls Pacquiao’s love
of singing and fondness of ‘70s
and ‘80s ballads. This tender side
makes him even more terrifying
to opponents.
However, as the final credits
passed, there were a lot of questions unanswered.
Who really was this man constantly surrounded by an entourage of his countryman?
Why did he look so worn down
bombarded by journalists, scrambling for stories in the cramped
confinements in the Wild Card
Gym?
What lead to his unbridled
devotion to Christianity and
creeping sense of megalomania
that frequently dogged his rise
to power?
How could he accept this responsibility of balancing the
expectations of a poor country,
the brunt of the weight resting on
his welterweight back?
The documentary is shadowed
by a fight that may never come
to fruition. Recent rumblings of
a potential Mayweather-Pacquiao
fight have brought the boxingworld to a standstill.
The documentary hints that
Pacquiao avoided no one, while
Mayweather handpicked his
opponents, avoiding the biggest, most threatening fighters to
maintain an unblemished record.
Pacquiao continues to clamor for
the bout, as Mayweather makes
innumerable excuses, and the
politics with promoter Bob Arum
and The Money Team interfere
with the potential fight of this
generation.

pobreza en África, cumplió el
miércoles 28 de enero 30 años.
Tras la celebración de la gala
de los American Music Awards,
los artistas aprovecharon la estadía conjunta en Los Ángeles
para reunirse en los estudios
A&M Recording Studios de
Hollywood, un 28 de enero de
1985, bajo la producción de
Quincy Jones.
El estelar elenco de músicos
grabó “We are the world”,
composición escrita por Lionel
Richie y Michael Jackson, un
sencillo publicado en marzo
de ese mismo año y que se
convirtió en uno de los grandes
éxitos benéficos de la historia
musical.
Asimismo, participaron Diana
Ross, Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, o Tina Turner, entre otros;
y cuenta la leyenda que muchos

artistas aparecían abrazados e

looks like Xbox One will offer
“#IDARB.” “#IDARB” is a competitive title that allows you and
your friends to race, jump and
shoot your way to domination in
this sports inspired game that is
similar in mechanics to “Shovel
Knight.”
Xbox 360 will start February out with “Brothers: A Tale
of Two Sons.” This game puts
you in control of two brothers
who are crushed by an emotional event but manage to pull
together to begin an adventure.
The controller scheme is the best
part of this “Fable” inspired title.
You control both brothers at the
same time (left thumbstick and
right thumbstick represent each
brother) in order to maneuver
through puzzles that pepper the
lands that you have to travel
across to complete your quest.
Half-way through February
Xbox 360 will offer “Sniper Elite
V2” to Xbox Live customers.
Sniper places players in World
War II and puts you on missions
to assassinate high value targets
in order to change the course of
the war. The stealth and precision
aiming are at the top their game
in this title. The main thing that
sets this one apart and worth
the play through is the kill cam.
When you initiate headshots the
camera enters a 3D mode that
shows all the damage that the
bullet causes.
The free games from January
will no longer be available for
free.
So unless you already downloaded them, it will be too late to
do so. A nice tip is to download
the games even if you have to

repertoire of roles with a turn as a
pirate in the upcoming animated/
live action film “The SpongeBob
Movie: Sponge Out of Water,”
although his buccaneer is the polar
opposite of the one Johnny Depp
portrays in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.
“What we wanted to do precisely
was get away from that hybrid
image in Johnny Depp’s films:
ambiguous, strange, supported by a
treacherous Keith Richards, closely
associated with drugs,” the 54-yearold told Efe in a phone interview
from New York.
“I tried to portray a pirate that was
very traditional and geared to children, fitting in in terms of my voice
and attitude with the parameters of
the movie; SpongeBob is defined by
its childlike quality and surrealism.
Starting with the premise that the
protagonist is a sponge, anything is
possible,” Banderas added.
“The SpongeBob Movie” is due
to premiere in the United States on
Feb. 6.

friend ... It was extremely tough to
work like that.”
“And let me tell you, with the
beard and wig I spent the whole
day with glue on my skin and it was
all irritated by the end of the day,”
he joked.
Banderas’ previous appearances
in the “Spy Kids” and “Shrek”
series might seem to indicate a predilection for children’s movies, but
he said his real aim is to explore all
possible genres.
“That’s what I’ve done since
arriving in the U.S. I’ve done horror, socially conscious cinema,
musicals, action, adventures, auteur
films,” he added.
“What children’s films allow is
a lot of freedom, because of children’s imaginations, the possibilities in their heads.”

película de 2014 por la Asociación
de Cronistas de Espectáculos
(ACE) de Nueva York.
La ACE, que realizará su
gala anual el 30 de marzo en el
Kaufman Center en Manhattan y
que este año celebra su 48 aniversario, dio a conocer los ganadores
en la categoría de cine, en la que
Jaenada se alzó con el premio
al mejor actor por su papel en
“Cantinflas”, que cuenta la vida
del mítico comediante mexicano
Mario Moreno y su alter ego.
El mexicano Luis Gerardo
Méndez logró el premio ACE
como mejor actor secundario por
este mismo filme, que se centra
en la producción del largometraje “Around the World in Eighty
Days” (1956), con el que el icono
latinoamericano dio el salto a
Hollywood.
Los periodistas, miembros de la
ACE, eligieron además a Diego
Quemada-Diez como el mejor
director por “La jaula de oro”,
que presenta la historia de unos
jóvenes migrantes guatemaltecos
y un joven indígena tzotzil en su
viaje a Estados Unidos.
En la categoría de mejor documental el ganador es “Little
Spain”, dirigida por Artur Balder,

A social media community
page emerged this past week
to get the ball rolling for Local
Music Week that is set to take
place May 17-23. Local Music
Week has been a San Antonio
tradition for the past five years.
Last year, Local Music Week
was brought about by local
music coalition Local 782 and
was a huge success amongst the
music scene. The reason behind
the event is to promote awareness and attendance to all local
music events.

diverse and united music community. By embracing all parts
of the community, from the
musicians, to the venues, the
promoters, the fans, and everything in between, LMW calls
attention to the fact that we
all have a role in shaping the
future of San Antonio’s local
music community. Ultimately,
the intention is to continue a
movement within our city to
spotlight local music all year
round,” read last year’s mission
statement for the event.
This year’s Local Music
Week is being done a little differently. The community page
that surfaced is asking who the
local community wants to see
perform, without releasing any
set line-up. They are asking
the public for not only who
they want to see musically, but
also asking for artists and food
vendors as well.
With over 400 likes already,
many members of the community have joined in on the
conversation stating who they
would love to see perform.
Even bands have taken to their
own personal pages encouraging their fans to have their
voices heard on the community
page.
“Good afternoon folks! We
would like to encourage our
fans to tag and share on the
link below to give us a chance
to play a really sweet show!
So give a go and please help
us out,” wrote local indie band
Sioux & Fox.
While no official venue location or line-up have been
released, you can join in on the
conversation via the official
Facebook page or by hashtagging #LMW2015.

LA PRENSA DE SAN ANTONIO
Querida Nina:
Soy un joven de 28 años y a
pesar de que tengo una familia
hermosa me siento muy vacío.
Yo no estoy casado pero la
mamá de mis hijos vive conmigo
y somos una familia como si
estuviéramos casados, la diferencia es que como no siento ese
compromiso entonces me fijo en
otras mujeres.
Ahora en mi trabajo acaba de
entrar una chica que me llama
mucho la atención y me gusta
mucho, no puedo evitarlo y como
no siento compromiso con la
mamá de mis hijos entonces no
siento la urgencia de dejar de
hablar con esta nueva chica.
Ella sabe que yo tengo hijos
pero nunca le hablo de mi pareja
porque hay algo que me detiene
a hacerlo.
A la mamá de mis hijos la quiero
mucho porque siempre ha estado
para mí cuando la necesito, pero
al mismo tiempo no siento que la
amo y eso me tiene triste todo el
tiempo. Lo que creo que es más
preocupante es que ella sí me
ama y además ahora que me voy
a cambiar a vivir a otra ciudad
por el trabajo, ella está dispuesta
a venirse conmigo.
Ahora no sé qué hacer porque
no quiero deshacerme de ella
porque es la mamá de mis hijos
pero al mismo tiempo nunca he
intentado serle fiel.
Querido joven confundido:
Tu situación no es grave, sin
embargo debo mencionar que
cada persona toma su propio
camino y hace con él lo que quiere.
Tanto tú como la madre de tus
hijos decidieron arriesgarse y
tomar este camino, por lo que tú
debes hacer un esfuerzo por comprometerte a ella o dejarla por las
buenas. Esto te lo digo porque
no es justo ni para ti ni para ella
estar forzando algo que no existe.
Pero si tú crees que puedes hacer
un esfuerzo, entonces anímate a
hacerlo para intentar serle fiel.
Con el tiempo te darás cuenta si
realmente puedes lograrlo o no.
De la misma manera, yo creo
que debes de hablar con tu pareja
y ser honesto. La mamá de tus
hijos también decidió entrar a tu
vida de esta manera, y debe de
estar consciente de que no están
casados y tú no tienes interés de
hacerlo.
Te recomiendo que primero
hagas una lista de lo que quieres
en tu vida y de lo que no quieres
en tu vida. Después, busca la
manera de hablar con ella y
decirle tu decisión. Lo que sí
debes de tomar en cuenta es dejar
las cosas claras y no hacerlo a
medias como hasta ahora lo has
estado haciendo.

SouthXSouthtown launches
in S.A. during SXSW

Oh, San Antonio, you never
cease to amaze me. I highly
admire the ‘If you can’t beat
them, join them’ mentality that
has come to light.
We all know South by Southwest is right around the corner,
newsletters have started popping up in emails, companies
attending are starting to ask for
RSVP’s to events they haven’t
fully put together yet.
And while I’m sure many of
us will travel up to Austin to
check out the circus, the San
Antonio music scene has put
together something they call
SXST, a play on words and the
event itself.
The event is coordinated by
the Jeff Slaughter and Nightrocker which ironically closed
its original location around this
time last year, but is apparently
returning a year later like a
phoenix rising from the ashes
as a promotional group for the
music scene.

SXST consists of mostly local
favorites such as Lonely Horse,
Femina X, Signalman, Los de
Esta Noche, Televangelist,
Crown, Saakred and my personal favorite The Last Nighters with some bands from the
East Coast such as New York
natives, Jane Lee Hooker and
Rhode Island natives Roz and
the Rice Cakes.
The line-up is very diverse
as far as genres, it ranges from
the sweet dreamy moon music
of Femina X to indie experimental bands such as Televangelist and Last Nighters to the
cumbia rock sound of Los de
Esta Noche.
The event will take place
over a span of four days from
March 19 – 22 in the parking
lot of popular Southtown bar,
Southtown 101, best known
for its Hip Hop 101 events that
happen on Mondays. The event
is $20 for all four days or $7 for
individual day tickets.
This event is the first of its
kind and though it doesn’t share
the same concept of SXSW
(chaos and pandemonium filling
the streets of Austin), this presents the opportunity to show
what our local talent has got and
perhaps this opens a window
of opportunity for spillover
bands from SXSW to have a
chance to come check out what
our city has to offer and escape
the craziness over there. Last
year, a couple of bands such as
the Cosmonauts made it to the
Limelight for such an event.
With so much going on at
SXSW, a lot of it gets lost in
the jumble of events that span
over the week. This is an opportunity for Austin bands as
well. Megafauna from Austin
is already on the lineup for the
event, and I look forward to see
who else jumps on board, local
or national.
There are already rumors of
spill over bands from Austin
Psychfest that may make their
way to our neck of the woods,
and that event is on a much
smaller scale compare to SXSW
so all we can patiently do is wait
to see what the wind blows in
this direction now that there is
a platform.
