Perseverance through pigskin
Story by Gregg McQueen
A
s football fanatics around the
country prepare for the Super
Bowl, a local youth team is gearing
up to make a splash of its own.
And here, the girls don’t just cheer on the
sidelines.
The Van Cortlandt Titans, a tackle football
team for young people ages 13 to 17,
completed its third season in December and
will open a new training camp on March 28.
The Titans compete within the New York
City Youth Football League (NYCYFL),
which comprises teams from across the city.
Ray Mack, the leader and co-coach of the
Titans, said the team is open to any local
teenager, and is about more than just sports.
“Our program is really focused on teaching
about life through football,” said Mack.
“The
elements
that
come
with football — camaraderie,
sportsmanship, teamwork —
are vital to life and that’s
what we’re instilling in our
players,” he explained.
And
in
the
Bronx,
where many young people lack sufficient
extracurricular outlets, that mission becomes
even more essential.
“Our concern is to keep kids focused, in
shape and out of trouble,” stated Mack. “We
give them a safe environment and provide

self-esteem.”
The Titans hold practices
and home games at Van
Cortlandt Park in the
Bronx.
It is a modest operation
— Mack said that he and
fellow coach Breez Nicasio, both residents of
Washington Heights, essentially run all facets
of the team.
“Some teams have six or seven coaches,
but we’re bare bones,” remarked Mack.
In their first two seasons, the Titans finished
with records of 1-9 and 1-8, respectively.
In 2014, the team finished 4-4 and earned a
playoff berth, advancing to the championship
game by defeating the previous year’s
NYCYFL champion, the Queens Falcons.
Most players on the Titans squad have been
with the team for several years. Part of the
team’s recent improvement stems from the
kids learning to work cohesively, said Mack.
“It’s about coming together, realizing our
strengths and weaknesses,” he stated.
“In life, kids are going to have to work
with people who are different than them —
maybe even people they don’t like — so it’s
important that they learn how to cope with
that,” explained Mack.
In addition to the appearance in the league
finals, the 2014 season was notable for another
reason — the Titans had their first-ever female
player, 16-year-old Zanáis González.
A high school sophomore, González said
she had always dreamed of playing tackle
football.
“I tried flag football, but didn’t enjoy it,”
she remarked. “I wanted the contact.”

M

“Algunos equipos tienen seis o siete
entrenadores, pero nosotros estamos bastante
limitados”, comentó Mack.
En sus dos primeras temporadas los
Titanes terminaron con un récord de 1-9 y 1-8,
respectivamente.

thyroid disease.
Thyroid disease is one of the most
common conditions in the United States,
affecting over 20 million Americans,
according to the American Thyroid
Association (ATA). The agency’s records
show that approximately sixty percent
of those affected are unaware of their
condition.
The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped
gland located in the neck area, roughly
below the Adam’s Apple. It produces
two hormones, T3 and T4. Through the
hormones that it produces, the thyroid
gland influences almost all of the metabolic
processes in the body.
Functions that are influenced by the
thyroid include maintaining a healthy heart
rate, producing protein, regulating calcium
in the blood, and the rate at which the body
uses oxygen, fat and other nutrients.
Thyroid disease is diagnosed when the
thyroid either “slows down”, producing less
hormones than are required for the body to
perform properly, or “speeds up”, producing
excess hormones, and thus abnormally
accelerating body processes. Hypo and
hyperthyroidism are the terms used to call a
“slow” or “fast” thyroid, respectively.
For the thyroid to work properly it has
to produce the correct amount of hormones
needed for the body to maintain normal
healthy functioning - Not too fast or too
slow.
Once hypo or hyperthyroidism has
been diagnosed, through a blood test,
medications can help bring the thyroid
hormone production level back to normal
by “slowing it down” or “speeding it
up”, depending on the case. Additional
treatments for hyperthyroidism also include

medicamentos ayudan a normalizar el nivel de
producción de hormona de tiroides haciéndolo
“más lento” o “acelerándolo”, según sea el
caso.
unas semanas y pocos meses.
administra previo a algunas pruebas CT
te ayudará a obtener tratamiento adecuado y
pronto, para restaurar el metabolismo al nivel
normal.

Story by Gregg McQueen
F
amilies victimized by a
housing scam will soon
receive some relief, after a Good
Samaritan has created an online
fundraiser to help them recover
money they lost to a con artist.
Richard Le has started a GoFundMe
campaign to raise money for victims of the
housing scam, in which several families were
bilked out of $2700 each by a Bronx woman
posing as a real estate agent.
The woman, identified by elected officials
as Jennifer Ricardo, even provided victims
with phony leases and keys, which the
families believed would acquire them a
newly renovated, low-rent apartment at 552
Academy Street.
Instead, Ricardo fled with the cash.
Officials said that the only way to acquire
an apartment at 552 Academy, a refurbished
affordable housing residence slated to reopen
in February, is through a lottery run by the
city.
Le said he hopes to raise $9,000 with
the campaign, which can be found at the
following link:http://www.gofundme.com/
kmav4o.
The campaign will close on January 31.
Though Le does not know any of the
victims personally, he said he was motivated
to help after reading of their situation.
“To me, their story resonated because I came
to this country as an infant from Vietnam,” he
explained. “It really struck a chord with me,
since I could picture this happening to my

parents when they first came here.”
He added, “People who prey on immigrants,
those don’t speak English well, or who don’t
know the system really anger me.”
At a press conference on Mon., Jan. 19,
City Councilmember Ydanis Rodríguez and
State Senator Adriano Espaillat revealed the
scam, standing alongside three families who
were victimized by Ricardo, who officials
believe has fled to the Dominican Republic.
“This is a crime perpetrated on the most
fragile New Yorkers — those seeking
affordable housing,” said Espaillat.
One of the scam victims, Ana Villega, said
that she will be forced to move into a shelter
with her two young children, as she had given
all of her savings to Ricardo and could not
afford another apartment.
“It’s awful,” remarked Le. “This kind of
thing destroys lives.”
At the press conference, Rodríguez said as
many as 15 people may have been victimized
by the scam.
“When you’re not familiar with the system,
or don’t have someone to advocate for you, I
think you are vulnerable,” said Le, a freelance
graphic designer. “I can definitely see how
someone could fall prey to that.”
This is not the first time Le has helped
neighbors in need — in 2012, he joined with
other community members to raise money
for businesses destroyed by a massive fire on
207th Street and Broadway.
The 2012 fundraiser raised several
thousand dollars.
Response to the current campaign has been
more subdued thus far, reported Le, with just
over $1500 raised as of Mon., Jan. 26.
Though donations to help the housing scam
victims have been slow, Le said he has no
plans to extend the campaign beyond January
31.
“We want to get the money to the victims as
soon as possible,” he commented.
Le said he will partner with elected officials
to transfer all of the money to the victims.
He plans to reach out to Rodríguez’s office
to discuss how to best distribute the money
amongst the families.
“Even though the money we raise might be
a small amount compared to what they lost,
if it’s even a few hundred dollars for each
family, that can buy quite a bit of groceries,”
remarked Le.
“Every little bit helps.”

me enojó”.

viviendas asequibles”, dijo Espaillat.

Lauding the launch IDNYC off to strong start

A
host of elected officials, led by
City Council Speaker Melissa
Mark-Viverito, gathered at the
Bronx Library Center on Fri., Jan.
23 to mark the first two weeks of
the IDNYC program.
The Speaker touted the early response of
New Yorkers to the municipal ID rollout, and
stressed the advantages of enrolling for the
card.
Since the IDNYC program launched
on January 12, approximately 10,000 city
residents have already
signed up for a card,
officials said, and nearly
100,000
application
appointments have been
scheduled.
“This has been so

the IDNYC card, as well as

would benefit from having a
valid form of identification.
“It’s about having people come out of the
shadows and be fully integrated into society,”
said Mark-Viverito.
“Yes, there is an incredible benefit to our
immigrant communities, undocumented or
not,” she added. “But this is an ID for all New
Yorkers.”
The IDNYC card allows access to city
buildings and schools, can be used to
open bank accounts with certain financial
institutions, and is considered valid
identification for interactions with the police.
“Without an ID in this town, you can be
treated as a non-person,” commented Marx.
“And everyone is a person and needs to be
treated with respect.”
Perks attached to the card include free, oneyear membership at 33 cultural institutions,
as well as discounts on movie tickets,

concejales Ritchie Torres, Vanessa Gibson,

Mark-Viverito.
“Sí, hay un beneficio increíble para nuestras
comunidades de inmigrantes, indocumentadas o
no”, añadió.

works from the Bronx Museum’s permanent
collection on view at MNBA from May 21
through August 16, 2015.
The exhibit will feature works created
from the 1960’s to the present that reveal how
contemporary artists are addressing questions
of identity, urban life, and community. The
initiative will also send – for the first time
– over 100 works from MNBA’s permanent
collection to the U.S. to be presented at the
Bronx Museum in spring 2016.
The title of the initiative, “Wild Noise,”
is taken from a Victor Hugo poem, “Ma vie
to the sublimity and chaos of urban spaces,
“the wild noise where infinity begins.” The
theme resonates with this year’s Bienal de La
Habana, which will be held at locations across
the city, integrating into the urban fabric of
Havana and its communities.
At the Bronx Museum, “Wild Noise” is
organized by Executive Director Holly Block,
and Director of Programs Sergio Bessa. At
the MNBA, the project is spearheaded by
Director Ana Cristina Pérez and curated by
Corina Matamoros, Curator of Contemporary
Cuban Art, and Aylet Ojeda Jequín, Curator
of Contemporary Cuban Art and Naïve Art.
“We are at the threshold of a new kind of
relationship between Cuba and the U.S.—
both politically and artistically,” said Block
in a statement. “The Bronx Museum has
been working with the arts community from

E
directora Ana Cristina Pérez y Corina Matamoros,

The group of women gathers on the last
Sunday of every month.
Like others in observance, hey hew
to custom. As they join together at sites
throughout the city, many are garbed in
pink t-shirts and blue bandannas. They play
instruments, and hold placards, banners and
flags.
They sing and chant – for exactly 33
minutes.
This past Sun., Jan. 25th, the group, 33
Mujeres NYC x Oscar, which includes many
Bronx residents, assembled uptown at 181st
and Broadway to call for the liberation of
Oscar López Rivera.
“The last Sunday of every month a group of
33 women manifest for 33 minutes,” explained
Natasha Lycia Ora Bannan, President-Elect of
the National Lawyers Guild (NLG).
33 represents the number of years that
Puerto Rican nationalist López Rivera has
spent incarcerated on charges of seditious
conspiracy against the United States
government.
He is currently serving his sentence in an
Indiana prison.

group charged with violent acts, including
bombings, during the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Though López Rivera, a staunch advocate
for Puerto Rican’s national sovereignty, has
consistently denied any involvement, the U.S.
government accused him of being involved
in the 1975 bombing of downtown restaurant
Fraunces Tavern and charged him with the
crime of seditious conspiracy.
Arrested on May 29th 1981, López Rivera
was sentenced to 55 years in prison. 15
additional years were later added to his
sentence for an alleged escape attempt.
López Rivera’s defenders claim that his
sentence is disproportionate with the charges
he was accused of, as he was never found
guilty of harming or killing anyone.
“He was never convicted for any violent
crimes and because he wanted to see a free

López Rivera was convicted of is a “common
charge brought upon independence activists,
such as Nelson Mandela.”
In 2011, López Rivera requested parole,
but it was denied.
Now age 72, supporters say he is the
longest held political prisoner in the history
of Puerto Rico.
Ana López (no relation), New York
Coordinator to Free Oscar López Rivera, said
she found the incarceration “illogical,” and
said that President Obama is the only one in a
position to release López Rivera.

Puerto Rico.
Ana López (sin parentesco), coordinadora de

“Nobody leaves here
empty-handed,” said
owner Fausto Enrique.
Story and photos by Mónica Barnkow
E
l Nuevo Bohío might seem, at
first glance, the typical Latin
Caribbean restaurant.
Like many, the restaurant specializes in
Dominican and Puerto Rican fare, and there
are the familiar scents of sofrito and freshly
ground espresso wafting in the air.
But there is more to the aromatic story.
An immigrant from the Dominican
Republic, owner Fausto Enrique took over
the restaurant, which translates to “The New
Hut,” two years ago.
Enrique, a bodeguero for many years, was
relatively new to the restaurant business.
But he was no rookie.
Enrique quickly moved to maximize the
customer experience the moment they walk
in.
Three screens depict rotating large-scale
images of various tantalizing menu items,
making it easier for patrons to make their
selections.
He also hired a local Dominican artist
to paint colorful landscapes of his native
country and of Puerto Rico to adorn all
walls.
It is a personal touch that connotes
childhood for many, including Enrique
himself.
“As a child, I used to do that, too,” said
Enrique, referring to a mural depicting a
woman carrying large barrels of water atop
a mule. “Every day, since I was 8 years old,
I had to travel more than one kilometer to
fetch water.”
Enrique also revamped the menu,
ensuring that there is a dish to suit one’s
appetite – no matter the hour or the “antojo”
(whim).
There are eggs, prepared any style, with
robust sides of bacon, ham, pork, turkey
or beef sausage; omelettes, pancakes and
French toast round out the morning’s
selections.
For lunch and dinner, there are heaping
plates of roast chicken and pork, and pepper
steak that are served with white rice and
beans, plaintains, and salads. Seafood is
made to order, and there are hearty soups
and satisfying mofongos.
Sandwiches and burgers are prepared all
day long, and should you be seeking a more
adventurous meal, the menu also offers such
delicacies as gizzards and blood sausages.
To wash it all down, there are fresh natural

juices, including the famed Morir Soñando (a
frothy orange juice and milk beverage) and
chinola (passionfruit juice), in addition to
bottled beers, house wines and soft drinks.
But the real secret, says Enrique, is the
kitchen’s sofrito, a sauce made of garlic, onion,
peppers, tomatoes, and other ingredients, that
forms the base of much of Latin Caribbean
cuisine.
“We make it ourselves,” said Enrique.
“Instead of using artificial sofrito, we make it
from scratch.”
In addition, the food is prepared fresh daily.
“We don’t reuse any food,” he explained.
“Whatever is left, we discard.”

Staff members are attentive and gracious,

“They order in large quantities for parties,”
explained Juan Ventura, a “compadre” of
Enrique, who helps out at the restaurant
when not driving trucks across the country.
And there are even busier days ahead.
care facility, will open across the street from
the restaurant in a matter of months.
“There will be more than 1,500 people
among health workers and visitors,” said
Ventura.
No doubt they will find their way to El

Derek Smith considers is “the best Latin
food in the Bronx.”

Queens’ first openly gay elected official,
Councilmember Daniel Dromm.
“Nobody ever thought this was going to be
possible [in the middle of the Bronx],” said
Councilmember Dromm. He shared some of
the challenges in choosing to run as an openly
gay man – and his pride in doing so.
“The best thing I ever did in my life was
coming out of the closet,” he said.
New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer
said the inauguration of the SAGE Center
marked progress for the borough’s elders,
and urged everyone present to seek out
opportunities to care for the aged.
“I wouldn’t miss this opening for the world.
It is a good night to be in the Bronx,” he said.

Según SAGE, los ancianos GLBT

menudo pueden ser afectados por el aislamiento,
soledad e inestabilidad financiera.
“Normalmente no tienen mucha familia a su

we will soon be in that position.”
For the City Council Speaker MelissaMark Viverito, the matter was as political as
it was personal.
“This hits close to home because I have two
gay brothers,” said the Speaker, adding that
the City Council would continue to serve as
an advocate for the LGBT community. “We
have to believe in equality and justice for
every person.”
Councilmember Maria Del Carmen Arroyo
praised Torres for bringing important issues
affecting the LGBT senior community to the
attention of his colleagues.
“He made sure that we paid attention,” she
noted.
According to SAGE, LGBT elders
frequently lack the support net that their
heterosexual counterparts have, and can often
be unduly afflicted by isolation, loneliness,
and financial instability.
“They usually don’t have a lot of family
[around], and as they grow older, they grow
lonely,” said Jose Collazo, Site Manager at
the Center.
Such is the case of Joyce Banks, whose
company at home presently is Mouse, his 9
year-old cat.
“My other half passed away in 2013. He was
a social butterfly,” said Banks, whose partner
introduced him to the SAGE community.
Now that the Bronx center has opened,
Banks said that while he plans on dividing his
time between the Manhattan and the Bronx
locations, he was thrilled to have a site in his
own home borough.
In the house on Wednesday also was a
Bronx “legend” among the LGBT community.
“All my life I have been a native-born gay
Bronxite,” said community activist Lewis
Goldstein. He congratulated the LGBT senior
community for its accomplishments – and
anticipated even greater things.
“We are aging,” he smiled. “But we are
aging to perfection.”

Avoid Injuries in the Winter
W
inter means icier roads,
blurrier vision and clumsier
steps. To avoid injuries, Physical
Therapist Karena Wu highly
recommends practicing these
five specific walking tips and five
specific stretches.
Avoid taking a spill.
Tips to Avoid Winter Injuries
1. Mind the Sidewalks
As much fun as it is to run in the
new snow, we have to remember
the uneven sidewalks, metal
grates and curbs, large and
small. Take shorter strides
and maintain flat foot contact
(v heel to toe walking, like
marching) so that you have
more surface area in contact.
2. Slow it Down
Slowing it down when walking, especially
as the temperatures go below freezing and
things ice over.
3. Bend Your Knees
Keep your knees bent as you trudge through
the snow, this athletic stance will allow your
body to reflexively react if you suddenly lose
balance.
4. Keeps Your Hands to Yourself
If you fall on icy or snowy streets, try not
to reach an arm out. A fall on an outstretched
arm could cause injuries to the wrist, elbow
and shoulder. In the moment, your thoughts
might be going awry, but if you’re going to
fall, try your best to land on your forearms.
5. Tighten the Core
Holding those abs in while walking
increases balance, powers the limbs and
stabilizes the spine.
Stretches to Avoid Winter Injuries
1. Monster walks
Walking like Frankenstein to stretch the
hamstring.
2. Leg swings
Swing your legs forward
and back, then side to side
for complete leg stretches.
3. Scorpion
Lie face down and twist the lower
body to the left and right to stretch
the lower back and hips.
4. Arm hugs
Swing your arms out from
side to side, then come in to hug yourself, for
a total arm muscle stretch.
5. Inchworm/Handwalks
Position your body in the downward dog
pose (both hands and feet on the ground, all
limbs extended) and walk your feet to your
hands for a more intense hamstring stretch.

Como evitar lesiones durante el invierno
E
l invierno significa carreteras más heladas,
visión borrosa y pasos más torpes. Para
evitar lesiones, la terapista física Karena Wu
recomienda practicar estos cinco consejos
básicos y cinco estiramientos específicos:
Consejos para evitar lesiones en el
invierno
Aguantando esos abdominales hacia dentro mientras

PERSEVERANCE from p3
ended up misappropriating funds that youths
had paid for entrance fees, and they also
purchased inferior equipment.
“That experience was tough on the kids,
but they persevered,” said Mack.
Now with a new name and outlook, the
team is seeking to drum up more local interest
in their games.
During the NYCYFL season, Titans
matches are held every Saturday at noon.
“We live in an area where people mostly
seem interested in baseball and soccer, so it’s
not always easy,” remarked Mack. “But we’re
trying to grow our program.”
That growth includes adding a Pee Wee
team for ages 10-12, starting with the 2016
season.
Practices for the Pee Wee team will start
this summer, said Mack.
On March 28, training camp for the 2015
season will begin.
“We don’t have tryouts and aren’t
concerned with skill level,” said Mack. “We
are open to anyone, and we’ll teach you to
become a better player.”
And Mack has a message for local parents
who might consider signing their teen up for
the Titans.
“When someone joins the team, your kid
becomes our kid,” said Mack.
“And when they leave the team, they’ll
have learned lessons that will stay with them
a lifetime.”
For more information about the Van
Cortlandt Titans, go to www.eteamz.com/
vancortlandttitans.
Training camp for the 2015 season will
begin on Saturday, March 28.
To sign up, please contact Ray Mack at
646.724.9412.
Though González was athletic and
previously played softball and basketball, not
everyone understood her ambition to join the
Titans.
“My whole family was skeptical,” she said.
Even Mack said he had reservations, not
wanting González to get injured.
But González was determined.
“I had always wanted to be able to play
against boys,” she explained. “I saw it as a
challenge.”
She played kicker and wide receiver for the
Titans this past season, and was even inserted
at linebacker for one game.
González said she dreams of playing
football in college, and proved to herself that
she could attain her goals and even inspire
others.
“A lot of other girls couldn’t understand
why I wanted to be on the team,” González
remarked. “But now, I know a few other
females who are interested in playing
football.”
To Mack, showing kids what they can
achieve is one of the hallmarks of his program.
“We have kids who come to our team
who don’t feel like they belong, or think that
people don’t believe in them,” he commented.
Mack said he is proud that some of his
players have gone on to college and that all of
them become more confident.
Yet the Titans story was not always a
smooth one, he explained.
Previously known as the Washington
Heights Wildcats, the team was founded
in 2006 by Mack and three other business
partners.
According to Mack, two of those men
hacer crecer nuestro programa”.
temporada 2016.
Las prácticas para el equipo Pee Wee
comenzarán este verano, dijo Mack.
El 28 de marzo comenzará el entrenamiento
para la temporada 2015.
“No tenemos pruebas de aptitud y no
estamos interesados en el nivel de habilidad”,
dijo Mack. “Estamos abiertos a cualquier

“This has been so embraced,” said
Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
IDNYC from p10
prescription drugs and gym memberships.
To some, the merits of the card are far
greater.
“The intangible value of the ID is the sense
of validation — it will reinforce our desire to
be seen, to be heard, to be recognized as New
Yorkers,” said Torres.
Rivera agreed, “It is about belonging, and
people knowing that they have access- just
like any other person.”
The IDNYC rollout has not been without
hiccups — on the day the program launched,
long lines flooded the city’s 11 permanent
enrollment centers, prompting the Mayor’s
office to switch to an appointment-based
system on January 13.
Also, applicants have complained about
lengthy hold times when calling 311 with
IDNYC questions, and the city’s appointment
website went down for a time during the
program’s first week.
Residents apply for IDNYC.
“There might be some frustration,
because people are anxious to get their ID,”
acknowledged Mark-Viverito. She stressed
that the city is reviewing ways to improve
the sign-up process, such as adding additional
enrollment centers, including mobile sign-up
sites.
“And the idea is to keep adding benefits to
the card as time goes on,” she said.
Those registering for an IDNYC card at
the Bronx Library Center that day were not
complaining.
“This is the best moment of my life,” said a
beaming Jorge Alvarado after completing his
application.
“I’ve been waiting a long time to be able
to get something like this,” added Tom, a
Parkchester resident.
The Bronx Library Center, located on East
Kingsbridge Road, is one of only two IDNYC
enrollment centers in the borough open to the
general public.
A third Bronx enrollment site, based at the
Department of Probation, is available only to
clients of that office.
Moreover, in the first few days of the
IDNYC program, the Bronx Library Center
saw its average number of attendees increase
from 3,000 to 5,000 per day.
“It was very exciting,” said Michael
Álvarez, the library’s Manager. “We didn’t
really expect such a huge turnout.”
Currently, the only way to apply for IDNYC
is to schedule an appointment in advance,
which can be done online or by calling 311.
Álvarez said that the earliest available
appointments at Bronx Library Center were
not until August.
Marx said that more computers and other
enrollment resources would be added at the
Bronx Library Center, one of the city’s most
trafficked libraries.
Two-thirds of those who use the facility
are people who do not use English as their
primary language, he said.
“The immigrant community of New York
knows that the library is their home,” stated
Marx.
“What’s great about this center is that it also
offers literacy classes, citizenship classes,
job fairs, free computer access — there are
so many things that people can discover
here when applying for the ID,” said Rivera.
Álvarez explained that the library provides a
comfort zone for local immigrants.
“A lot of individuals come here because
they feel it’s a safe place,” he said. “It’s
where they feel comfortable learning English,
searching for a job or discovering services to
assist themselves.”
While at the library, Councilmembers
Gibson and Cohen applied for their own
municipal ID cards.
Gibson, who serves as the Chair of the City
Council’s Committee on Public Safety, said
it was important that the Police Department
was embracing IDNYC, as many New
Yorkers refrain from reporting crime because
they lack identification, including victims of
domestic violence.
“It’s also huge that people do not need to
reveal their immigration status when applying
for the ID,” commented Gibson. “It will
eliminate the fear that many immigrants feel
about requesting one.”
Gibson proudly displayed her own
municipal ID application.
“This is an exciting time for New Yorkers,”
she said. “This is a part of history.”

“He esperado mucho tiempo para poder
“Nosotros realmente
no esperábamos esa enorme participación”.

neoyorquinos”, dijo. “Esto es parte de la historia”.

I am worried for my father
How can I help him?
Dear Doctor,
i am worried about
my father. after many
years of hard work,
he was let go last year
and has not been able
to find a job since.
We are not suffering
deep money problems,
although we have had
to cut back. But my
father feels it is his
fault. he never goes
bowling anymore,
he is often up in the
middle of the night,
and he’s been like this
for almost a year now.
my mother and i don’t
know how to help him.

Dear Angel,
It sounds like your father
may be suffering from clinical
depression. Although many
people feel sad or depressed
at times in their lives—
particularly in reaction to loss
or life’s many struggles—
clinical depression is harder
to shake and can impair a
person’s ability to function in
everyday life.
When a person is clinically
depressed, feelings persist
and don’t go away. Symptoms
can include: loss of interest
in
previously enjoyed
activities; sadness; change in
weight; difficulty sleeping or
oversleeping; loss of energy;
feelings of worthlessness; and,
in the worst cases, thoughts of
death or suicide.
But your father isn’t alone!
Over 20 million Americans
suffer from depression. It is
more common among women,
often starting in ages 15 -30.
Depression is often triggered
by stressful events such as
divorce, death or job loss, and
a
person is more likely
to become depressed if they
have a family history of it.
Luckily, clinical depression is
a treatable medical condition.
Common treatments include
antidepressant
medications
and talk therapy. Occasionally,
in severe cases, hospitalization
may be needed.
I suggest that you and your
mother sit with your father,
explain to him how much
you care about him and how
you’ve noticed that he seems
