Tema: Optimal delivery of fattened pigs to the abattoir
Resumen:
The structure of the pork sector in world economy is changing. In the last years, pig farms are becoming
more and more specialized, while the size of their facilities is increasing. Moreover, they have tended to
integrate and coordinate their operations into pork supply chains by using tighter vertical coordination
linkages. This talk presents a modelling approach to the real problem of when fattened pigs have to be
delivered to the abattoir. The decision is a compromise between production costs and expected income paid
by the abattoir along the production cycle that often includes penalization by extra weight or fat content. The
modelling approach presented is a mixed integer linear programming model describing a fattening pig unit
operating under all-in all-out strategy. It is assumed that all production is sold to an abattoir prescribed by
the pork supply chain (PSC) in which the farm is integrated. Piglets, feedstuff and veterinary care are
provided by the PSC. The interest of the model is to analyze the deliveries of pigs to the abattoir accounting
for specific growth, body composition, truck capacity and penalties on selling price. An important practical
aspect is that pigs are selected by visual inspection and hence, heavier pigs of the herd are the first delivered
to the abattoir. Our contribution confirms the findings of past studies but demonstrates the benefit of
fattening pigs with homogeneous weights and the importance of individual measures to avoid extra costs
derived from grouped animals.

Tema: Event based formulations for the Multimode RCSP with generalized temporal constraints.
Resumen:
Scheduling is becoming much more important in every industry. However, the standard Resource
Constrained Scheduling Problem usually does not cover all the characteristics of real world problems.
Several Event Based MILP formulation for the Multimode Resource Constraint Scheduling Problem of
direct application for some industries, as aeronautical assembly lines. Taking as a starting point one of the
last MILP formulations for standard RCSP, two alternative formulations are given, which cover the
multimode case and more general temporal constraints than the ones usually referred to in the literature.
Keywords: Project scheduling, multimode, event based formulation, temporal constraints.
Álvaro García Sánchez is a professor at the ETSI Industriales, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) in
Spain. He obtained his degree in Industrial Engineering and his PhD from this same university. His main
areas of interest are Simulation and Optimization for Production and Logistics. He lectures in graduate,
postgraduate and PhD courses at the UPM and used to coordinate the Master’s and PhD programs in
Industrial Engineering (Ingeniería de Organización). He also collaborates with other universities and offers
training for companies. In addition, he has a close contact with the practitioners’ world as he carries on
consulting activities, which led him to set-up a company in 2011, making the best of the synergies derived
his consulting and academic activities
