Remembering Robert Sanchez

It is with deep sadness that La
Prensa announces the passing of
our beloved Sales and Marketing
Director Robert Conrad Sanchez
Jr., better known to family and
friends as Bobby. He died of a
stroke on Tuesday at 49 years
old.
As an instrumental force in
the revitalization of La Prensa
in 1989, Bobby always has
been and will remain a pillar of
San Antonio’s only bilingual
newspaper.
After all, it was he who de­
voted nearly half of his life to
La Prensa. In fact, the rebirth
of La Prensa began in Bobby’s
living room.
At the time, he was 25 year
old, a computer whiz, and had
prior experience at Trinity Uni­
versity’s student newspaper.
It was only natural that his
aunt, Amelia “Millie” Duran,
publisher and CEO of La Prensa,
reached out to him for help.
“We had a newspaper in Fort
Worth that was doing really well
and Tino didn’t want to come to
San Antonio, but I had my house
here and I wanted to come back,”
Millie said. “So I asked my sister,
Anita, and my nephew, Bobby,
if they would help me start the
paper.”
Sure enough, Anita became the
receptionist and Bobby held the
position of sales and marketing
director.
Millie remembers Bobby care­
fully crafting out the first letter­
head on his computer while she
and Anita let their fingers fly away
over typewriters. It was the first
step towards the revitalization of
La Prensa.
With the same diligence he
crafted that first letterhead, Bobby
worked hard to move La Prensa
forward in years to come. He
often stayed up until 4 a.m. mak­
ing sure everything was ready for
the paper.
“A lot of the times, because of
the fact that we pasted the copy
on a board and we had to take
that board to the printing press,
the papers would fall out and we
had to do the copy again,” Millie
recalled. “A lot of times, it was
Bobby who would re-do them and
he never complained.”
More than two decades later,
Bobby still worked rigorously to
make sure La Prensa was headed
in the right direction.
“Bobby was a big part of my
life because if he hadn’t gone
along with me and accepted the
fact that I wanted to do this more
than anything, we might not be
where we are today,” Millie said.
Similarly, Bobby also helped
Millie with La Prensa Foundation,
a nonprofit that provides scholar­
ships to local college students
who are confronted with financial
hardships.
More importantly though, Bob­
by was someone she could trust to
take care of her younger sister, his
mother Anita.
“He loved my sister with all his
heart and that was probably my
favorite part about him,” Millie
said. “She depended on Bobby
for everything.”
When Anita passed away in
2013, it was in his arms that she
died.
“That was her thing, she always
wanted to be next to Bobby,”
Millie said. “If something
happened to her, she wanted
to be next to Bobby be­
cause he always gave us
strength.”
There was some­
thing about Bobby
that always transmit­
ted peace and tran­
quility.
“Every time I
saw Bobby he al­
ways had a smile
for me, and I loved
it because I knew
everything was going
to be alright,” Millie said.
“That’s what I’m going to
miss the most, his smile.”
He was a quiet presence, but
never a small one. Bobby’s hard
work and dedication spoke louder
than any words could.
He didn’t need to be boister­
ous to be heard, he wasn’t
the type of leader that
always asked for
attention, rather, he
was respected for
his gentle spirit

Kids rise up to the challenge

Obesity is a major problem in
the Lone Star State.
According to stats from the
Center of Disease Control, 66.7
percent of adults and children
suffer from the disease. Texas
has the 10th highest obesity rate
in the nation.
Childhood obesity is a partic­
ularly troubling affliction. Ex­
tra pounds often start children
on the path to health problems
that were once only affecting
adults. This includes diabetes,
high blood pressure and high
cholesterol. In addition, child­
hood obesity can lead to depres­
sion and poor self-esteem.
Luckily, it can be treated
rather easily. According to the
Mayo Clinic, the best way to
prevent and treat childhood
obesity is to improve diet and
exercise habits of the entire
family.

Students find job opportunities through STEM

the role of grit, or perseverance in
leading a successful life.
Coppola and Duckworth argued
that success was not determined by
talent or natural intelligence, but
rather by how much work students
were willing to put in.
“What determines success is
grit,” Coppola said. “Do you
have that grit? Do you have that
determination that will make you
successful?”
Students practiced breathing
exercises before standing in front
of their peers to explain their own
motivations and goals for complet­
ing the speech class.
Speech 1311-152 marks the first
college course for the first class
of Harlandale STEM, who are
working to earn both an associate’s
degree and a diploma when they
graduate from high school in 2018.
Harlandale ISD STEM Early
College High School partnered
with Alamo Colleges and Palo
Alto College in 2013 to prepare
San Antonio’s future workforce
for new jobs that desperately need
filling.

En un video narrado por el
actor mexicano Diego Luna, la
Oficina de Washington para Lati­
noamérica (WOLA, en sus siglas
en inglés), una organización
centrada en la defensa de los
derechos humanos en el conti­
nente, denunció la situación de
los menores mexicanos que son
deportados casi de inmediato por
la Patrulla Fronteriza.
“Muchos de estos chicos son
explotados por el crimen orga­
nizado” cuando regresan a sus
comunidades de origen, asegura

Republicanos: Esto es personal
Es imposible
no verlo como
un ataque per­
sonal. Si los
Republicanos
se salieran con
la suya, más de

dos perderían la protección
migratoria que les dio el presi­
dente Barack Obama con su
orden ejecutiva. El peligro de
deportación volvería a caer
sobre ellos y perderían sus
permisos de trabajo.
Los Republicanos en la cá­
mara de representantes votaron
–por 236 contra 191–para re­
vocar la acción ejecutiva de
Obama que beneficia, sobre
todo, a los Dreamers (estudian­
tes indocumentados) y a los
padres (sin documentos) de
niños que nacieron en Estados
Unidos. Están, dicen, contra la
decisión “inconstitucional” de
Obama.
Pero muchos latinos no lo
vieron así. “Esto significa un
ataque personal contra mí y
contra mis padres”, dijo en una
entrevista Cristina Jiménez,
directora de United We Dream,
la organización de estudiantes
indocumentados más grande
del país.
La propuesta republicana no
pasará el Senado –donde los
Republicanos no tienen los
60 votos necesarios para su
aprobación– ni sobreviviría un
veto presidencial. Es decir, lo
hicieron solo para que quedara
constancia de su oposición al
presidente. Pero no se dan
cuenta de que el mensaje para
los inmigrantes latinos fue te­
rrible: Estamos contra ustedes.
(La acción ejecutiva de Obama
tuvo 89% de aprobación entre
los hispanos, según una en­
cuesta de Latino Decisions).
El partido Republicano se ha
quejado últimamente de que
algunos periodistas latinos –yo
incluido– solo les queremos
preguntar sobre inmigración.
Dicen, con razón, que temas
como la economía, la salud y la
educación son más importantes,
de acuerdo con las encuestas.
Pero lo que no entienden
los Republicanos es que el
tema migratorio es simbólica y
emotivamente el más influyente
para nosotros. Define quienes
están con nosotros y quienes
están en contra. Además, les
preguntamos sobre inmigración
porque son los Republicanos
quienes están bloqueando una
reforma migratoria en el Con­
greso y porque es un asunto sin
resolver.
Los Republicanos no parecen
haber aprendido nada de su
derrota electoral en el 2012. Su
propio análisis de esa derrota
decía: “Si los hispanos creen
que no los queremos aquí, ellos
van a cerrar sus oídos a nuestras
políticas”. Absolutamente cier­
to. Pero el mensaje de su voto
en la cámara de representantes
hace unos días fue clarísimo: no
los queremos aquí.
Así van a perder, otra vez,
el voto latino y la Casa Blanca
en el 2016. El propio senador
Republicano Lindsey Graham
dijo recientemente que las posi­
bilidades de su partido de ganar
la presidencia son “casi inexis­
tentes” a menos que hagan
algo para resolver el problema
migratorio. Lejos de resolverlo,
lo tienen bloqueado en el Con­
greso y siguen atacando a los
inmigrantes.
Casi todos sus posibles can­
didatos a la presidencia tienen
posiciones anti-inmigrantes. Y
si Mitt Romney decide volver a
lanzar su candidatura, volverá a
perder el voto latino. Su política
de “auto deportación” lo marcó
negativamente entre los his­
panos y por eso solo obtuvo el
27% del voto latino en la última
elección presidencial.
Ahora, una aclaración. Como
periodista y como inmigrante
he criticado tanto a los Republi­
canos como a los Demócratas.
Critiqué duramente al presi­
dente Obama por no cumplir su
promesa electoral –de presentar
una propuesta de reforma mi­
gratoria en su primer año de
gobierno– y lo volví a criticar a
finales del año pasado por haber
deportado a más de dos mil­
lones de indocumentados y por
no detener antes las deporta­
ciones. (Aquí está la entrevista
bit.ly/158lj93) No es un asunto
partidista. Es, sencillamente, un
asunto de derechos humanos,
pendiente y urgente.
Obama ha hecho, ya, todo
lo que podía hacer. No irá más
lejos. Ahora le toca a los Re­
publicanos actuar. Y no lo están
haciendo.
No es, para nosotros, una
cuestión abstracta. La mitad
de todos los hispanos (mayores
de 18 años de edad) son inmi­
grantes. Por eso, cuando los
Republicanos atacan a un grupo
de inmigrantes, el impacto es
enorme entre todos los latinos,
legales o no.
Los Republicanos, con toda
la razón, están preocupados.
Nadie puede llegar a la Casa
Blanca sin el voto latino. Y
cuando pidan el apoyo de los la­
tinos para las elecciones presi­
denciales del 2016 les vamos
a recordar todas las veces que
han votado en contra de los in­
migrantes. Son muchas: desde
su oposición al Dream Act,
pasando por el bloqueo que su
líder John Boehener hizo de la
reforma migratoria por más de
500 días, hasta la votación de la
semana pasada en el congreso.
Nunca se olvida cuando alguien
te dice que no en tu cara.
Los Republicanos no acaban
de comprender que la migración
es, para nosotros los latinos, un
asunto del alma. Y mientras no
lo entiendan –y hagan algo al
respecto– van a seguir perdien­
do nuestro voto y las elecciones
más importantes del país. Sí,
los Republicanos tienen un
problema latino y menos de dos
años para resolverlo o volverán
a perder.

Remembering MLK’s legacy and impact
In San
Antonio
and in cities
across our
great nation,
communi­
ties joined
Leticia
Van de Putte together this
past Monday
and marched to honor the legacy
of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
As I have done for over 20
years, I joined the MLK march
through our city’s beautiful,
historic Eastside, arm-in-arm
with our San Antonio family:
community leaders, activists and
everyday people.
We take a lot of pride in our
San Antonio version of the
march, because it’s one of the
largest in the USA. San Antonio
may not be the first city that
comes to mind when people
think of Dr. King’s legacy — you
might wonder, how did such an
enormous march develop here?
In fact, the struggle for civil
rights has a deep history in San
Antonio, going back even before
the period that we traditionally
think of as the Civil Rights Era.
It was here, in 1934, that a
group of community leaders
formed La Liga Pro-Defensa
Escolar (School Defense League)
to demand that all Texas school­
children receive an equal and fair
opportunity for a good educa­
tion — an early volley in a fight
that continues in our courts and
legislature to this day.
And four years later, 12,000
San Antonio pecan shellers —
mostly Hispanic women, led by
Emma Tenayuca Brooks — went
on strike to demand changes to
the horrible working conditions
they faced. Years later, Dr. King
would view struggles for work­
ers’ rights such as this one as
inseparable from the cause of
racial equality.
As the modern civil rights
movement coalesced, San An­
tonio’s African-American com­
munity developed strong leaders,
including the likes of NAACP
President Harry Burns and the
Reverend Claude Black among
many others, utilizing the same
non-violent tactics that Dr. King
had embraced.
Their effective leadership
moved San Antonio away from
segregation and actually put it
ahead of many other Southern
cities.
Today, the results of that
movement can be seen not only
in the march, but during Dream­
Week, an annual, 12-day civil
rights summit in San Antonio
that leads up to the MLK Day
March.
I love my city’s traditions
around the MLK holiday, and
I’m grateful that — thanks to the
people of San Antonio — I am
able to keep pushing this dream
forward. For 25 years now in the
Texas Legislature, I have taken
up many civil rights battles.
I’ve fought against redistrict­
ing maps that attempted to dilute
the voting strength of minority
groups. I’ve fought against voter
ID laws that make it more diffi­
cult for minorities, women, and
the elderly to vote. I’ve pushed
bills to help women receive
equal pay when they are doing
work equal to that of their male
coworkers. And I filed legisla­
tion that would have outlawed
discrimination in the workplace
based on sexual orientation.
These have been uphill battles,
and there is still much work to be
done. Every single person — no
matter their race, color, creed,
or means — deserves a seat at
the table.
Dr. King once said, “Life’s
most persistent and urgent ques­
tion is, ‘What are you doing for
others?’” His lesson resonates
with me every day.
Here’s my promise to you: I
promise that, no matter what, I
will wake up every morning and
take action on anything I can do
to help others. And I know that
you will do the same, because
we share the belief that every
child from every neighborhood,
every worker and business owner
deserves a fair shot.
Dr. King’s dream keeps getting
closer to full realization. Let’s
keep marching toward equality
— on the streets of San Antonio’s
Eastside, in our halls of govern­
ment, and in our everyday lives.

More construction along
main thoroughfares, but
it may be worth it
There was an item on the
ballot during last year’s Gen­
eral Election. It was called
Proposition 1, or Prop 1. The
measure called for a yet to be
determined amount of money
for use on the state’s highway
system. The monies would
come from the State’s Rainy
Day Fund.
Needless to say, the measure
was overwhelmingly approved
by the voters and now as we
begin the new year there’s
movement to use that money
and some of it is targeted for
Bexar County and the City of
San Antonio and addresses
problems that we as users of
the highway system are well
aware of because we’ve had
to deal with these problems
for so many years.
These problems that activist
Teri Hall has been discussing
for an untold number of years
may only be seen with a shake
of the head and out loud won­
dering of why it took so long
to address, especially since
the money for these problems
was already in the bank, so
to speak. Nonetheless, it ap­
pears the matters are being
addressed for the most part
and there may be a light at the
end of this proverbial tunnel or
in this case as near as the next
entrance or exit ramp.
In all, as estimated $1.78
billion is there for the pro­
posed highway construction.
It’ll be used for numerous
projects in Bexar County. The
one getting the lion’s share
of the funds targets Loop 410
from Ingram Road to Hwy.
151. When completed drivers
will travel on eight lanes as
opposed to the six lanes we
now use. The only downside
is the time of construction and
you know what that means,
more traffic snarls, but once
it’s completed we can at least
drive the speed limit.
There are more things to
come from this money outlay.
Look for a $20 million project
that will see the addition of
frontage road improvements,
those improvements will also
include an upgrade to intersec­
tions and ramps. We guess that
means they’ve got us covered
coming and going on the high­
way of life. All these pluses
will take place along Hwy. 90
between the inner loop of 410
and the outer loop of 1604.
They also want to do some
work on IH-10 between Camp
Bullis Rd. and Fair Oaks
Pkwy. This will include a
new intersection of Old Fred­
ericksburg Road, UTSA is in
the mix. We’re looking at a $2
million improvement project
to 1604 in front of the uni­
versity, just west of the IH-10
interchange.
For commuters, this is all
good. It’s only hoped that
this will not be the end of the
goodies and just a piece meal
idea to keep us happy. After
all, it wouldn’t be the first time
we’ve gotten the carrot and
the stick routine to please us.
We need to continue watching
what goes on with our money.
The one real positive in all
this is that no toll roads are in
the mix.

Just a Thought: Making a Real Difference
Periodi­
cally, I reread some
of my past
“Just a
Thought”
columns
and recall
with some
Steve Walker
delight
what I wrote. Now beginning
my third year of the column, it
is not like they go back years,
but months. However it is still
like walking down memory lane
of sorts.
Many readers might remember
that for the two previous years
before “Just a Thought” I also
wrote a weekly column called,
“Ask the Judge.” I informed
readers on everything you want­
ed or needed to know about
finding yourself in a Justice of
the Peace Court. For me I got to
be Judge Judy two days a week
among other things! Those are
positive memories.
In that August 2013 column, I
grappled with the question, “Am
I making a difference?”
I wrote, “For us old timers
who grew up with the movie
‘It’s a Wonderful Life,’ with ac­
tor Jimmy Stewart, (aka George
Bailey) the question is about
whether or not we make a differ­
ence in people’s lives. Hopefully
the answer is ‘yes.’ ”
Sometimes I reflect on how my
life as a former judge has made a
positive impact or difference on
people’s lives who entered my
courtroom. I do believe many
people from all walks of life
have entertained similar types of
thoughts more than once in their
lives as well.
Having taught in the public
school system for 26 years, my
students would share with me
that they dreamed of wanting
to be a doctor, nurse, police­
man, or firefighter to be able to
literally save lives and “make
a difference.” How many La
Prensa readers have at one time
had those thoughts and never
expressed them to anybody?
In my case I wondered in that
column if I did a good enough
job to affect my students in a
positive way. I would like to
think so. Even now I still go on
Facebook and am able to con­
nect with a number of my former
students who are now parents
and even grandparents. You
don’t know how old that makes
me feel! Back then there was no
such thing as Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram and the like.
It is great however keeping
up with them and their lives as
they share with me about their
families, where they have been,
the type of work they now do
and on and on. I remind many
of them how I vividly recall
them back then sharing with me
their goals and aspirations to
do exactly what they are doing
now and “making a difference.”
Fortunately my memory is still
intact!
It makes me feel that I some­
how contributed to their success
and not their failure. One of my
former students is currently run­
ning for the San Antonio City
Council and another is a county
judge who I taught when he was
12 and in the seventh grade.
When I was a Justice of the
Peace he received two appeals of
my cases and happily for me he
upheld me both times. Maybe I
made a positive difference in his
life or I made the right decision
that he concurred with on those
verdicts. Either way it works
for me.
No longer a teacher or judge, I
guess I will move on to the next
phase of my life and continue try­
ing to “make a real difference.”
Hopefully writing a weekly
column for La Prensa makes a
big difference, too. Only you
the reader can decide that one.

Earlier this week, WellMed
and the City of San Antonio
announced the grand opening
of the Doris Griffin One Stop
Senior Center, a one-stop shop
where seniors can spend the day
learning, socializing, and exer­
cising while getting up to par on
their health services.
The facility, now taking resi­
dence in what was a Mervyns
Department store with over
22,000-square-feet—will of­
fer fitness activities, computer
classes, and access to health
services and meals to anyone
60 and older.
WellMed staff anticipate over
300 seniors will utilize the cen­
ter daily.
There are a total of eight cen­
ters around San Antonio. The
Doris Griffin One Stop Senior
Center is another collaboration
with WellMed and the city to
offer these services to seniors.

87 percent of Harlandale ISD
students are considered economi­
cally disadvantaged, and nearly 12
percent of students drop out each
year. Schools like STEM hope
that the specialized courses and
immersive learning approach will
keep the students in school.
The majority of the students in
the speech class described their
families as being their biggest
motivation and obstacle for com­
pleting the course and graduating
from the program.
“I want to help my parents save
money,” Jazmine Prieto, a fresh­
man student said. “I hope I can.
I think Angela Duckworth was
right, failure is not permanent.”
The STEM high school is cur­
rently undergoing construction in
the Harlandale Memorial Stadium
area, and is expected to be com­
pleted by mid-summer 2015. In
the meantime, students complete
their courses in temporary class­
rooms located on the Frank Tejeda
Academy and buildings on the
Palo Alto campus.
“You have to work hard to
be successful,” Ramos added.
“There’s still a lot of things that
could prevent me from getting
where I want, but I plan on work­
ing hard and making a better
future.”

said during class. “I would like
to go into forensics. I’m not sure
what I want to do after that, but I
think I’ll learn what I need here.”
Ramos is one of the 110 fresh­
man students who applied and
were accepted into the program.
Students were required to submit
a formal application and a written
essay explaining their motivation
for joining the program, but the
biggest determining factor for ac­
ceptance was showing an interest
in science, technology, engineer­
ing, and math (STEM).
According to data from the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics, em­
ployment related to STEM fieldsscience, technology, engineering
and mathematics are expected to
grow by more than nine million
jobs between 2012 and 2022.
STEM employees are already in
demand, but the required training
and education make the positions
difficult to fill.
Although there are seven other
similar schools throughout the
state of Texas, this is the first
STEM early college high school
located in a large metropolitan
area.
“The main focus for our students
is on mechanical engineering and
then the biomedical field, because
that’s where the focus for jobs
needs to be in San Antonio,” Dr.
Eddie Rodriguez, the principal for
Harlandale ISD STEM said. “We
want to give the students an oppor­
tunity to excel in the job market.”

a daily basis and share stories,
make friends, and play games
with fellow citizens.
Joseph Gonzalez is one of
those people. Crouching over
a pool table; aiming for a shot,
his friends Francisco and Eddie
stand watch from behind.
They are a few of many who
have already made the Doris
Griffin Center their second
home.
“We were going to Bob Ross
prior to this place,” Gonzalez
said, laughing. “Now that we
have this center, It’s closer to
home, so we have more time to
play some pool. It’s always fun
here. You see people, you make
friends. There’s always some­
thing to do, and we love making
everyone feel welcome.”
Gonzalez and crew have a
reputation around the senior
centers in town. Together, they
have started a pool team, where
they compete against other
teams in other senior shelters
around town. They even in­
spired the ladies of the centers
to create a team.
“Sometimes, new folks come
to visit [the shelter], and they
are shy,” Gonzalez said. “You
see them standing against the
walls, not talking to anyone. We
always invite them to come play
some pool. They say they aren’t
any good, but with practice, they
keep coming and getting better
and better at pool while making
friends. That’s what these places
are all about. We’re all here for
each other.”

One of the first kids fitness
campaigns is a team effort be­
tween San Antonio Sports and
the University Healthy System.
The Go!Kids Challenge is an
annual event that motivates
kids to make healthier eating
choices and integrating daily
physical exercise a habit.
Go!Kids is a six-week pro­
gram that shows the importance
of routine exercise and drinking
water instead of sugary drinks.
Children are required to fill out
a program that records their
daily activity and amounts of
water and servings of veg­
etables and fruits.
“We want kids to be up and
moving, to make exercise a
daily habit, as much as brush­
ing their teeth,” Mary Ullman
Japhet, senior vice president of
San Antonio Sports said.
Over 140,000 elementary
kids spanning from 230 schools
citywide have pledged to exer­
cise five days of the week, eat
their fruits and veggies, and
increase water intake.
After completion of the
Go!Kids Challenge, partici­
pants are given a free day pass
to Sea World.
The program officially kicked
off at Ray Burn Elementary
school: a Southside campus.
Over 100 kids jumpstarted their
routine with pushups, planks
and grasshoppers.
“I’m really excited about
this,” Jordan Wilson, a kinder­
gartener at Rayburn Elementary
said. “I’ve been practicing all
week so I can be ready.”
Go!Kids Challenge was a
pioneer in getting nonprofits
involved in combatting the is­
sue in the community. Since
then, many more kids fitness
programs have been created.
“We were one of very few
fitness programs in the commu­
nity. Since that time, I am very
happy to say three have been
many programs. It’s wonder­
ful,” Japhet said. “We’re happy
to share the playing field with
others. We see an awareness of
the issue at schools, and schools
are hungry for programs like
this. The important thing is that
we are increasing awareness of
obesity, and continuing to find
ways to fight it.”

de muchos inmigrantes, bien
empieza el año para 242 resi­
dentes de 57 países que el jueves
se convirtieron en ciudadanos
de los Estados Unidos al jurar
lealtad a la bandera y recibir el
certificado que acredita su nuevo
estatus legal.
La audiencia para este
propósito se efectuó en el Ins­
titute of Texan Cultures y fue
conducida por personal de
United States Citizenship and
Imigration Services. La ceremo­
nia fue presidida por el juez
federal John Primomo, quien
en el momento ansiosamente
esperado pidió a los solicitantes
de ciudadanía que levantaran la
mano derecha para prestar jura­
mento a la bandera e –instantes
después– el recinto irrumpió en
júbilo de los nuevos ciudadanos
y sus familiares.
Previamente al juramento
oficial, en que se jura defender
sin reserva, a los Estados Unidos
como su nueva patria, las auto­
ridades de USCIS testificaron
ante el juez federal que todos
los solicitantes habían cumplido
con los requisitos legales que
prescribe el Congreso, que entre
otros demandas exige un histo­
rial individual sin transgresiones
criminales.
Quienes recibieron el di­
ploma de ciudadanía proceden
de países de todas las lati­
tudes como Afganistán, Argelia,
Bangladesh, Bután, Burundi,
Camerún, China, Colombia, Ru­
manía, Rusia Vietnam, México
y Suecia.

VIA Metropolitan Transit trae modernización y
muchas mejoras en toda la zona de servicio. Estamos

pasajeros de VIA también verán mejoras tangibles al

autobuses propulsados por gas natural comprimido),
y estamos instalando 900-1, 000 nuevas paradas de

los autobuses cada 30 minutos durante las horas punta
en los días de semana, pero después del 5 de enero las
frecuencias mejorarán a cada 20 minutos, en la mayoría

La fase 1 de este proyecto, que incluye la rehabilitación
del “depot building”, se ha completado. La instalación
está en funcionamiento y es el nuevo hogar de las
oficinas ejecutivas de VIA. Fase 2, que incluye una
plaza de tránsito a través de la calle del “depot
building”, está en marcha. Los elementos visuales
iniciales de la plaza son evidentes con la instalación de
las columnas con dosel y vigas. Esta fase está prevista
para finalizarse antes de septiembre de 2015.
SH 151 pArK & ride
Las instalaciones Carretera Estatal 151 “park and ride”
servirán a viajeros procedentes de los suburbios
occidentales que viajan a la zona del centro. Esta
instalación se posicionará para conectar y dar servicio
a los principales centros de actividad en la ciudad, y
potencialmente sirviendo a las rutas “express” 64 y
65 y otras rutas de autobuses.

tránSito
VIA está llevando a cabo un estudio sobre el corredor
sur / oeste, que incluye Southwest Military Drive de la
IH-37 hacia el este al General McMullen Drive / Bynum
en el oeste, así como el General McMullen Drive /
Bynum y Zarzamora Street desde la unidad militar en
el sur a Babcock / Fredericksburg Road en el norte.
El plan le recomendará un conjunto de servicios
de autobuses Primo y de mejoras a segmentos
del corredor, y que incluirá elementos de diseño y
especificaciones técnicas que orientarán la ejecución
del proyecto previo a la puesta en marcha del servicio.

Estudio revela que diabetes no impide implantes dentales

La diabetes puede afectar cual­
quier parte del cuerpo, incluyendo
la salud dental.
Un mal control de la diabetes
podría resultar en la pérdida de
dientes. En dado caso, se puede
optar por implantes dentales, pero
tradicionalmente los dentistas han
evitado este procedimiento.
Realizar cualquier tipo de
cirugía en una persona con dia­
betes podría resultar complicado
porque el alto nivel de azúcar en
la sangre dificulta la cicatrización
y aumenta el riesgo de sufrir in­
fecciones.
Sin embargo, un reciente estu­
dio realizado por The University
of Texas Health Science Center
at San Antonio indica que, con un
pequeño cambio de protocolo en
tratamiento de pacientes diabéti­
cos con un alto nivel de azúcar en
la sangre, los pacientes sí podrían
colocarse implantes dentales.
El director del estudio Dr.
Thomas Oates comentó que cuan­
do se trata de implantes dentales
en personas diabéticas existe
mucha incertidumbre, pero en rea­
lidad no habían suficientes datos
y literatura para descartar el pro­
cedimiento e personas diabéticas.
“Es una opción de tratamiento
importante porque estos pacientes
sin buen control glicémico no
pueden masticar y comer adecua­
damente para poder controlar su
diabetes”, comentó Oates. “Si no
están comiendo bien y no pueden
masticar, entonces no pueden con­
trolar su azúcar en la sangre y se
convierte en un problema cíclico”.
En el estudio, 110 pacientes
fueron divididos en tres grupos: en
pacientes sin diabetes, en pacien­
tes con diabetes controlado (índice
de glucosa en la sangre entre 6 y
8 por ciento) y en pacientes con
diabetes descontrolada (índice de
glucosa en la sangre entre 8 y 13
por ciento).
A cada paciente le hicieron
una cirugía en su mandíbula para
poder colocar los implantes de
metal que actúan como una base
y sostienen la dentadura postiza
de forma fija.
El estudio se enfocó en moni­
torear el tiempo que las heridas se
tardaron en cicatrizar y en cómo el
hueso de la mandíbula se recuperó
alrededor de los implantes.
Según los resultados, las he­
ridas se tardaron más tiempo en
cicatrizar y el hueso se tardó más
tiempo en sanarse en personas con
la diabetes descontrolada.
Para modificar el procedimien­
to, en vez de esperar dos meses
antes de colocar la dentadura
postiza, las personas con un alto
nivel de azúcar en la sangre espe­
raron cuatro meses.
Después de colocar la denta­
dura postiza, los pacientes fueron
monitoreados por un año y según
el estudio, los implantes fueron
igual de efectivos en personas sin
diabetes al igual que en personas
diabéticas con un alto nivel de
azúcar en la sangre.
“Esto es algo completamente
diferente a lo que nos habíamos
imaginado”, comentó Oates.

Sin darme cuenta –hace diez
años– de pura coincidencia me
encontré con la “fuente de la ju­
ventud”. Claro que no fue como
puede uno imaginarla: una casca­
da de agua cristalina o un pequeño
lago en el que se ve brotando
espectacularmente un chorro del
preciado líquido. Fue una gran
dosis de vitamina D recetada
por mi doctor, quien después de
checar mi expediente médico
observó detalladamente que me
faltaba calcio por lo que tenía
que comenzar a tomar vitamina
D, haciéndome ver que tenía que
comenzar un tratamiento a largo
plazo para así evitar alguna que­
bradura de huesos.
“La vitamina D la recibe el
cuerpo humano mediante rayos
solares, claro que uno no se debe
exponer por mucho tiempo. Es
bueno exponerse al sol en horas
que la temperatura está en su pun­
to de aguantarla, ya que los rayos
ultravioleta pueden dañar la piel
y hasta ocasionar manchas can­
cerosas. La vitamina D la puedes
adquirir en diferentes alimentos
durante tu dieta alimenticia”, dijo
mi estimado doctor de cabecera.
Han pasado diez años y ahora
mi expediente médico indica que
me encuentro en mejor estado de
salud con la cantidad de calcio
en buen promedio, todo gracias
al consumo de vitamina D, la
cual sigo tomándola en menor
graduación en pastillas, así como
en mi alimentación cotidiana,
especialmente durante el desa­
yuno paladeando cereales, leche,
mantequilla y quesos por nombrar
algunos productos básicos.
También se me recomendó
recargar el físico consumiendo
vitamina C, especialmente en el
cambio de temperatura del calor
al frío, ya que como es del cono­
cimiento público aquí en San An­
tonio durante el año solo tenemos
dos estaciones: “calor y frío”.
En mis 25 años de residir en

Creating a trauma-informed organization

When you hear the word “trau­
ma” you might think of a medical
situation, something out of a show
such as Grey’s Anatomy.
In fact, there are many different
types of trauma to include natural
disasters, grief, and being part of
a war zone. But the trauma we
address in our work with children
and families is a different type of
trauma. We work with children
in families healing from complex
trauma.
This means that they have been
exposed to multiple traumatic
events over a course of time. Typ­
ically, these events include severe
poverty, neglect, sexual abuse,
physical abuse, and emotional
abuse. Having been around since
1901, The Children’s Shelter has
served thousands of children and
families. We provide services to
heal and restore innocence in chil­
dren while strengthening families.
In the 114 years of our exis­
tence, we have seen the need to
help children and families heal
from past trauma in order to
move forward and begin to thrive.
In 2011, we began to research
and hear of success stories from
organizations across the country
providing trauma-informed care.
After much research, we knew
that we had to bring these tools
into our organization to assist in
staff providing the best services
for children and families.
In 2014, we entered into an
agreement with Community
Connections-a third party expert
consultant-guiding us through this
transformation.
We are utilizing the Com­
munity Connection’s Trauma
Informed Care model which is a
two-year implementation project.
The transformation into a traumainformed organization means
all levels of staff and board of
directors understand the impact of
trauma, can recognize symptoms
of trauma, and understand how
to respond to trauma and avoid
re-traumatization of the client.
The primary principles of an
environment of trauma-informed
care include: safety, collabora­
tion, choice, trustworthiness, and
empowerment. We cannot have
one principle without the other;
these principles are prescribed
across all departments and pro­
grams of the agency.
In addition, a fully traumainformed organization provides
trauma specific interventions
that are designed to address the
symptoms that have resulted in
traumatic experiences.
Our organization utilizes mul­
tiple interventions to work with
children, biological, adoptive,
and foster families. Interventions
are tailored to the needs of each
family.
We anticipate completing the
certification in the spring of 2015.
The Children’s Shelter will be the
first agency in San Antonio to
receive a certificate of comple­
tion and be recognized as a fully
trauma-integrated agency. For

especialmente quienes se encuen­

De mi parte les diré que han ido
pasando los años y ahora –que
estoy a siete meses de cumplir los
60 años de edad– a veces personas
me hacen halagos disque porque
no aparento tener 59 años, lo
cual me hace sentirme contento,
porque recuerdo que mis tíos
a la edad de 40 o 45 años a mí
me parecía que ya eran personas
de la tercera edad. Bueno, lo de
sentirme halagado se me esfuma
cuando la dueña de mis quincenas
me dice que las pólizas de seguro
de vida me van a aumentar casi
lo doble ¡y todo porque estaré
cumpliendo 60 abriles!
Recientemente tuve que can­
celar una póliza de seguro de vida
que estuve pagando a $12.00 por
mes durante 20 años. No quise
renovarla por la simple razón que
se me dijo que por estar cerca
de cumplir los sesenta años la
póliza se tenía que renovar con
un aumento de precio del 120 por
ciento. La cancelé y me volvieron
a llamar para darme otra opor­
tunidad de continuidad, solici­
tándome que para “reactivarla”
tendría que pagar seis meses por
adelantado. De nueva cuenta
cancele toda llamada o contacto
con la compañía de la cual me
reservo el nombre para no causar
problemas judiciales.
Lo mismo en reciente solicitud
que hice para obtener los servi­
cios de una prestigiada empresa
aseguradora especializada en
cobertura médica, tanto para
mí como para la familia. Se me
pidieron todo tipo de requisitos
personales. Pero le indiqué al
agente encargado de la posible
compra de seguro médico que
soy una persona que no fuma,
no toma licor, no padezco de
enfermedades crónicas, nunca
he sido hospitalizado en salas de
emergencia o nosocomios. Por lo
único que la prima del seguro me
aumentaría –se me informó– sería
porque el costo de los dos únicos
medicamentos que tomo (que
son para control de la presión
arterial y ansiedad) elevarían la
póliza a un cincuenta por ciento.
Si me decido a comprar el seguro
médico de esa compañía, tan solo
por mi estaré pagando más de lo
que ganó quincenalmente por lo
que he decidido quedarme sin se­
guro médico y continuar alimen­
tándome correctamente para no
enfermarme y seguir disfrutando
de la fuente de la juventud.
Como alcohólico vivo un día a
la vez. No sé si habrá un mañana,
solo El Creador es quien lo estará
decidiendo.

Pasos pequeños para
hacer grandes cosas

Hace poco, alguien que cuidaba
de otra persona me dijo que iba
a tomar pasos pequeños cada día
con la esperanza de que estuviera
haciendo lo correcto. Tenía una
larga lista de cosas que hacer y se
sentía abrumada.
Esto me recordó de la película,
What About Bob. Bill Murray
interpreta el papel de Bob, un
hombre que padece de un trastorno
obsesivo-compulsivo y que no
puede ni salir de su departamento
porque tiene miedo a explotar
espontáneamente.
Nosotros sabemos lo que se
siente.
Richard Dreyfuss interpreta al
terapeuta que hereda a Bob de un
terapeuta anterior, uno que obvia­
mente ha huido lo más lejos posible
de Bob. El nuevo terapeuta acaba
de escribir un libro llamado Pasos
pequeños. La película entonces
muestra cómo Bob tenazmente
toma “pasos pequeños” para visitar
a su nuevo terapeuta. Una vez que
logra salirse, se da cuenta de que
tomar pasos pequeños está funcio­
nando y esto finalmente cambia su
vida. Pasa de ser un hombre que no
puede funcionar a uno seguro de sí
mismo que parece adueñarse de la
exitosa vida de su psicólogo. Entre
más mejora Bob, más se deteriora y
se vuelve disfuncional el estado de
su terapeuta. Bob ya no lo necesita.
Tomar pasos pequeños se convierte
en el mantra de Bob.
Así que, imagínese a un bebé
que apenas empieza a caminar por
primera vez. Toma pasos pequeños
alrededor de la mesa de centro. Con
el tiempo, deja de agarrarse de los
muebles, se suelta y empieza a
tomar pasos pequeños a través del
cuarto. Esto abre la puerta a un
mundo completamente nuevo. Ya
no está gateando, viendo lo que
está atorado debajo de las mesas
y sillas donde la luz nunca brilla,
con su cara rozando la pelusa, las
migas y golosinas en la alfombra.
Levanta la vista para ver los objetos

mos y a nuestros seres queridos
es pesimista y quizá un poco más
allá del extremo. Si permitiéramos
que alguien más cuidara a nuestro
ser querido, uno de nosotros ex­
plotaría de seguro. Si saliéramos
de nuestra casa, podríamos pisar
sobre una grieta y fracturarle
la espalda a nuestra madre. No
sabemos cómo funcionar fuera del
papel que adoptamos al cuidar a
otra persona. Seamos sinceros, no
hay mucha diferencia entre Bob, el
agorafóbico que nunca sale de su
casa, que no tiene amigos y está
obsesionado con una persona, y
algunos de nosotros.
Pero, ¿qué pasaría si nosotros
también tomáramos pasos peque­
ños? Tomar pasos pequeños sig­
nifica dejar de gatear y empezar
a caminar parados, valiéndonos
por nosotros mismos. Tendremos
una perspectiva diferente. Tomar
pasos pequeños no es un compro­
miso grande. Es hacer cambios
pequeños que nos llevan hacia otra
dirección. Solo estamos tomando
unos cuantos pasos pequeños a
la vez para que no se nos cansen
las piernas o nos quedemos sin
energía. Además, podemos volver
a sentarnos en cualquier momento.
Podemos lograr cosas extraordi­
narias si tomamos pasos pequeños.
En la película, Bob cambió su vida
entera un paso pequeño a la vez.
Tomar pasos pequeños puede ser
exactamente lo que necesitamos
en nuestras vidas. Si nos sentimos
agobiados, dividamos lo que ten­
emos que hacer en partes pequeñas
y hagámoslas una a la vez. Si nos
sentimos atorados o para nada
podemos sentirnos como nosotros
mismos, tomemos pequeños pasos
para recuperarnos. Además, tomar
pasos pequeños también puede
funcionar para el ser querido que
cuidamos. Tiene que haber algo
resplandeciente a lo lejos que a
todos nos gustaría ver de cerca.
Y aunque esta nueva dirección no
fuera la indicada para nosotros o
nuestro ser querido, no hay prob­
lema por que a fin de cuentas los
pasos pequeños que tomamos no
nos han llevado demasiado lejos
por el camino.

Driving demands quick reac­
tion time and fast decision making
— because of this, a person with
Alzheimer’s will eventually become
unable to drive. Dealing with the
issue early on can help ease the
transition.
Determining when someone
can no longer safely drive requires
careful observation by family and
caregivers. The following list pro­
vides warning signs that it’s time to
stop driving:
• Forgetting how to locate familiar
places
• Failing to observe traffic signs
• Making slow or poor decisions
in traffic
• Driving at an inappropriate
speed
• Becoming angry or confused
while driving
• Hitting curbs
• Using poor lane control
• Making errors at intersections
• Confusing the brake and gas
pedals
• Returning from a routine drive
later than usual
• Forgetting the destination you
are driving to during the trip
Losing the independence driv­
ing provides can be upsetting. It is
important to acknowledge a per­
son’s feelings and preserve his or
her independence, while ensuring
the person’s safety and the safety
of others. Some ideas to start the
conversation are:
• Initiate a dialogue to express
your concerns. Stress the positive
and offer alternatives.
• Address resistance while reaf­
firming your unconditional love
and support.
• Appeal to the person’s sense of
responsibility.
• Reinforce medical diagnoses
and directives. Ask the physician to
write a letter stating that the person
must not drive. Or ask the physician
to write a prescription that says, “No
driving.” You can then use the let­
ter or prescription to reinforce the
conversation.
• Consider an evaluation by an
objective third party.
• Understand that this may be the
first of many conversations about
driving
Some people give up driving eas­
ily, but for others this transition can
be very difficult. Be prepared for
the person to become angry with
you, due to the memory and insight
issues that are part of Alzheimer’s.
• Be patient and firm. Demon­
strate understanding and empathy.
• Acknowledge the pain of this
change and appeal to the person’s
desire to act responsibly.
• Ask a respected family authority
figure or your attorney to reinforce
the message about not driving.
• If the conversation does not go
well, do not blame yourself. The
disease can impair insight and judg­
ment, making it difficult for people
to understand that their driving is
no longer safe. Also the disease
can cause mood and personality
changes that make reactions more
pronounced.
• As a last resort, take away the car
keys, disable the car or remove the
car completely. When you do any of
these things, be sure to provide safe,
reliable alternative transportation.
For people in the early stages of
Alzheimer’s, it is never too soon
to plan ahead for how you will get
around when you can no longer
drive. Putting a plan in place can be
an empowering way to make your
voice heard. Some tips for planning
ahead are:
• Remember that each situation is
unique. What works for one person
may be different from what works
for another. You can get the infor­
mation and support you need from
the Alzheimer’s Association at (800)
272-3900.
• Involve family and close friends
in the plan.
• Confront resistance. Empathize
with those who are uncomfortable
having the conversation and stress
the importance of preparing for the
future.
• Develop an agreement for all to
share that includes practical safety
steps, such as a periodic driving as­
sessment, a GPS monitoring system
for the car, and alternate transporta­
tion options.

The Texas Sports Hall of Fame announced its class of 2015 on Thursday.
Those honored include NBA star Zelmo

Baylor runner Jeremy Wariner. The Hall
of Fame banquet will be held April 9,
2015 in Waco.
After an illustrious career, Jeff Gordon
announced that the 2015 season would
be his last as a full-time driver. Gordon
accolades include four championships
and 92 Sprint Cup wins, which ranks
third all-time. However, Gordon
insisted that his decision shouldn’t be
regarded as a retirement from Nascar.

Kawhi “The Claw” Leonard
and Patty “The Tasmanian
Devil” Mills are back and ready
to take the league and the NBA
by storm and the NBA better be
ready for these two are making
a huge impact.
Before playing the Denver
Nuggets, the Spurs were 8-3
with their return. Leonard was
out until Dec. 10 due to his on
going eye injury. He’s been
averaging 15.5 points per game.
Mills has been back from his
shoulder injury for about three
weeks. After missing every
game of the season until his
return against the Houston
Rockets, Patty is looking better
than ever.
The team juggled multiple
starting lineups, including
former Spur Austin Daye and
Aron Baynes. During their
combined absence, the Spurs
were 2-7. With Mills’ and
Leonard’s presence back, their
boost of confidence has lifted
them to currently blow out their
opponents.
Although just scoring eight
points in his season debut
against division rival Houston
Rockets, Mills has found his
stride and has a bigger impact
on the court than what the stat
sheet shows. So far this season,
he averages 11 points per game
and two assists.
Mills’ blazing speed on the
court and his ability to move
the ball to create plays has been
missed. But, Leonard’s quick
hands and ability to make shots
were even more deeply missed
in his absence, as it is evident
that he has become the top dog
for the Spurs.
Along with “The Big 3,”
Leonard has made clear that
there is not just three major
superstars on the team. Now
for Spurs fans across the Spurs
community it’s the “Fantastic
Four.”
Although the Spurs have not
been on the winning side of
things lately, causing a slight
doubt amongst some Spurs
fans, Coach Pop has this team
in control.
The Spurs don’t play to look
the best heading into the All-Star
break then fall flat come playoffs. The Spurs finish strong,
proving just how scary-good
they can be postseason the past
16 years. They can be the eighth
seed and still win the championship. Don’t panic Spurs fans,
just R-E-L-A-X. Relax.

La tarea para Miguel Herrera,
Director Técnico de la selección
nacional mexicana, en este
2015 es difícil. La carga de
trabajo es complicada y se
tienen dos torneos en puerta
que resultan muy importantes.
El Piojo esta confiado en poder
hacer un buen papel en ambas
competiciones y se muestra
seguro de esto.
El “Piojo” confirmó que la
prioridad es la Copa de Oro,
ya que esta da medio pase a
la Copa Confederaciones, el
cual se deberá disputar contra
Estados Unidos en caso de
ganar la edición 2015 de la
Copa de Oro.

una obligación ganar La Copa
de Oro
“La tenemos que ganar sí
o sí, no tenemos alternativa,
de lo contrario nos podemos
ir despidiendo de la
Confederaciones”, declaró el
técnico nacional.
Confirmó que todavía no está
seguro de los jugadores que
conformarán cada selección,
pero aseguró que ambas
escuadras competirán y deberán
desempeñar un buen papel en
todas las competiciones:
“Todavía tengo una maraña
de nombres, no sé que jugador
va a jugar en que equipo, pero
la realidad es que tenemos la
calidad para competir en ambos
torneos”.
Herrera sabe que la Copa
América será muy competida,
pero confía en que su equipo
pueda llegar a estar en los
primeros lugares:
“Creo que podemos llegar a
estar en los primeros puestos,
podemos llegar a la final”.
Ensalzó la calidad de equipos
como Brasil, Argentina, Chile
y Colombia, pero Herrera está
seguro que el desempeño de su
equipo será muy bueno.
Los calendarios de Copa
América y Copa de Oro no se
empalman, pero sí están muy
cercanos, esto complica todo
el tema de los convocados y el
préstamo de los jugadores por
parte de sus clubes. Herrera
tiene definido el destino de su
cuerpo técnico: “Yo voy a la
Copa América a terminarla,
de ahí nos integramos a la
selección de la Copa de Oro”.
Confiado, tranquilo y muy
optimista es como se muestra
Miguel Herrera acerca del
futuro de la selección
nacional mexicana tanto en
Copa América como en Copa
Oro. No será hasta el mes qué equipo disputaría la justa
de mayo cuando sepamos la de CONMEBOL y cuál la de
convocatoria que dictaminará CONCACAF.

NASL Announces 2015 Fall
Season Fixtures

November," said NASL Commissioner Bill Peterson. "The last
two fall seasons have gone down
to the wire, and I suspect it won't
be any different in 2015."
The crowning of last year's Fall
Season Champion went down to
the final seconds. Defender Adrian Cann scored a stoppage-time
winner to give the Scorpions a 1-0
win over the New York Cosmos
and the Fall Season Championship in dramatic fashion.
The Scorpions would then go
on to beat the Cosmos in The
Championship Semifinals the
following week before raising the
Soccer Bowl Trophy after topping
the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the
2014 title game. The Cosmos will
have to wait for their attempt at
revenge until late in the Fall
Season when they visit the
Scorpions at Toyota Field on
Oct. 24.
"It's a competitive schedule
that reflects the strength of the
league," said Scorpionshead
coach Alen Marcina. "It includes some marquee matchups
in the final weeks, and hope-
fully those matches will have
playoff implications because
that creates a lot of excitement
for our fans."
Only one of the four postseason spots will be spoken
for going into the Fall Season,
giving teams a great chance to
generate momentum and make
a push for a spot in The Championship.
"The balanced schedule in
the Fall Season makes for a
great competition for our fans,"
Peterson said. "They'll have a
chance to see every team in the
League at their home stadium."
The league will operate under
the exact same competition
format as last year, with the
Spring Season Champion and
Fall Season Champion accounting for the top two seeds in the
postseason. For the teams that
did not capture either the Spring
or Fall title, the remaining two
postseason spots will go to
the sides that accumulated the
most combined points over the
course of the Spring and Fall
Seasons.
The North American Soccer
League (NASL) announced today
its schedule for the 2015 Fall
Season, which will kick off on
Saturday, July 4.
Each of the 11 NASL clubs
will play a 20-game Fall Season
schedule, playing each opponent
once at home and once away. The
winner of the Fall Season, which
will end on Sunday, November
1, will earn one of the top two
seeds in The Championship, the
league's four-team postseason
tournament.
The 2015 Fall Season will kick
off on the Fourth of July, one of
the country's most celebrated
holidays, in two American cities.
The Tampa Bay Rowdies and
Carolina RailHawks will host
Fourth of July games against the
Atlanta Silverbacks and Minnesota United FC respectively.
"Opening the Fall Season at
home on Fourth of July will be
very special for both our club
and our fans," said Rowdies head
coach Thomas Rongen. "The
split-season format has a proven
track record where every game
matters - whether it's the first or
last week of the season."
Jacksonville Armada FC will
open the Fall Season with their
first ever road trip north of the
border, visiting Ottawa Fury FC
at TD Place. Also included in the
opening-weekend matchups is a
pair of Sunday games. The New
York Cosmos host Indy Eleven,
while FC Edmonton welcomes
the San Antonio Scorpions, the
league's defending champions.

Word senior guard Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS)
was named to the Lou Henson
award Mid-Season Watch List on
Wednesday. The finalists for the
2015 Lou Henson Award will be
announced in March.
The Lou Henson Award is
presented annually to the Division I “Mid-Major” Player of
the Year. The award is named
in honor of Henson who retired
after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When
he left the game in 2005 he was
sixth all-time in career Division
I wins with 779.
He is the winningest coach at
both Illinois and New Mexico
State. He is one of only 12
coaches in the history of the
game to take two schools to the
Final Four.
The 2015 recipient will be announced at the CollegeInsider.
com Awards Banquet on April
3 in Indianapolis, site of the
2015 men’s NCAA Basketball
Championship.
Livingston is currently the
leading scorer among all NCAA
Division I men’s basketball players with 23.3 points per game. In
addition, he is ninth in the nation
with 2.58 steals per game. The
well-rounded player also contributes 5.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists
and 1.0 blocks per game. He
has scored at least 30 points in
three games this year including

celebraron la conquista del primer
torneo invernal en Liga Dominical
Potranco, que rindió honores a la
memoria del beisbolista Ever Gloria.
Piratas ganó el trofeo tras derrotar
17-2 al rival Águilas de La Sauceda,
comandado por Benito Martínez,
Samuel Villarreal y el propietario
Héctor Ibarra.
Por el campeón abrió el lanzador
Miguel García, quien tiró 7 entradas
y un tercio, con relevo de Moisés
Montalvo.
Por el subcampeón, abrió su
as Iván de Anda, seguido por los
relevistas Juan Carpio y Aroldo
Farías.
La premiación fue conducida por
Juan Sánchez, coordinador general
del torneo, quien felicitó a los equipos
finalistas y a los jugadores de Piratas,
el campo corto Bryant Guerrero, que
se adjudicó la nominación del Novato
del Año y el lanzador derecho Moisés
Montalvo, ganador del trofeo MVP,
por su victoria y salvamento.
El trofeo del tercer lugar fue
para el club Titanes, cuyo trofeo
fue aceptado por el tumba bardas
Mauricio Esparza.
“Se tuvo buen comienzo en el
partido, lo cual facilitó la coronación.
Gracias a toda la afición, jugadores
y organizadores de este torneo.
Estamos listos para defender el título
en el siguiente torneo”, afirmó el
timonel De Luna.
“Ahora lo que sigue para Águilas
es reforzarnos y estar listos para
el siguiente torneo. Felicitamos
a Piratas, fue un gran rival, no
esperábamos llegarle a disputar
el campeonato por lo que ahora
seguiremos adelante promoviendo
el desarrollo del béisbol, ya
que tenemos en nuestro equipo
varios novatos y prospectos”, dijo
Benito Martínez.
Oscar Zapata, arquero de Xolos, no logró atajar el disparo de penalti ejecutado por Guayo Jinéz,

Latinos serían grandes

propuesta del presidente Barack
Obama de hacer gratuitos
los dos primeros años de
"community college" (centros
públicos de educación superior)
para alumnos responsables,
según un informe divulgado
por el Centro de Estudios Pew.
Del total de latinos en centro
universitarios, un porcentaje
en alza, un 46 %, lo hacen en
este tipo de centros, una cifra
mucho más alta que cualquier
otra raza, según los datos del
Departamento de Educación
compilados por Pew.
En 2013, un 22 % de los
matriculados en "community
college" de dos años eran
latinos, frente al 14 % de
2000, explicó el informe, que
señala que la propuesta de
Obama, anunciada el pasado
día 8, tendría un "impacto
significativo" entre los latinos.
Como comparativa, la
presencia de estudiantes
afroamericanos solo se ha
incrementado en ese mismo
periodo del 12 % al 15 %.
Entre los argumentos para
esta mayor presencia de
los jóvenes latinos en estos
centros se sitúa el menor costo,
las menores exigencias de
calificación y el hecho de que
estén concentrados en estados
donde se congrega la mayor
parte de la población latina,
como Texas o California.
En los últimos años,
los estudiantes latinos
han aumentado de manera
progresiva y general
su matriculación en la
educación superior, y en 2013
representaban el 19 % de todos
los estudiantes de entre 18 y
24 años, mientras que en 2008
eran solo el 12%
La propuesta de Obama
plantearía como condiciones
que los estudiantes beneficiados
asistan al menos a la mitad de
las clases y mantengan una
calificación media ("GPA")
de al menos 2,5 puntos sobre
4, además de avanzar de forma
estable hacia la obtención de
un grado o un certificado.
No obstante, la iniciativa, que
costaría al Gobierno federal
alrededor de 60.000 millones
de dólares en los próximos diez
años, ha tenido una acogida fría
entre la mayoría republicana
del Congreso, poco interesada
en aumentar el gasto federal.
Esta medida es una de las de
mayor calado de las adelantadas
del discurso del Estado de la
Unión que pronunció Obama
ante el Congreso.

Patron Wong visits San Antonio
The spring semester at Assumption Seminary in San
Antonio began with the visit
of Archbishop Jorge C. Patron
Wong, Vatican Secretary of
Seminaries and Congregation
for Clergy, on Jan. 10.
After Christmas break, close
to 100 seminarians returned
on Jan. 9. Archbishop Patron
Wong’s visit to the archdiocese and the seminary came in
the context of St. John’s- Assumption Seminary’s yearlong
Centennial Celebration, commemorating the beginning of
the institution in 1915.

at eucharistic celebration as
the seminarians began the
spring semester on Jan. 10.
Reflecting on the Scriptures
of the day, Archbishop Patron
Wong exhorted the seminarians to be rooted in humility
and to be persons of truth as
the true traits of a seminarian
and a priest.
Commenting on the nature of
formation offered at Assumption, he expressed appreciation
for the efforts of the seminary
and the faculty. Referring to
the growth of North American
vocations to the priesthood, he
commended the seminarians
for offering their lives to God
in priesthood.
With special reference to the
centennial celebrations, the
archbishop recalled the efforts
of the pioneers and thanked
God for their heroic courage
in carrying out God’s plan in
this part of the United States
and Texas.
Following the liturgy, Archbishop Patron Wong joined
the seminary community for
brunch in St. Joseph’s Hall.
Father Jeff Pehl, rector of Assumption Seminary, welcomed
him and presented a short biography of the archbishop.
In his address, the archbishop
highlighted the seriousness of
formation to priesthood with
an emphasis on cultivating a
human heart, a Christian heart
and a pastoral heart.
Referring to the amendments
made by the Vatican in the
guidelines for priestly formation, he reiterated the focus
of each stage of formation.
He identified the focus of
formation specifically geared
towards cultivating a human
heart that is capable of loving
and receiving love. Mentioning
the importance of a Christian
heart, he highlighted personal
responsibility and continuing
to grow in one’s relationship
to Christ during the years of
formation to priesthood.
With a special emphasis on
the cultivation of a pastoral
heart, Archbishop Patron Wong
noted the importance of the
years of theological formation.
While he emphasized the importance of the academic component of formation, he pointed
to the necessity of assimilating
theological education for the
purpose of pastoral ministry.
Addressing some of the questions of the seminarians, the
archbishop reiterated the importance of integrating the four
pillars of formation: human,
spiritual, intellectual and pastoral – and giving each its due
attention during formation.
Narrating the events of his

At the end of his talk, he
asked to take a photograph individually with the seminarians so
as to have a memory by which to
pray for each of the seminarians.
On the following day, Archbishop Patron Wong celebrated
the Eucharist in Spanish at
St Padre Pio Parish in San
Antonio. All the seminarians
joined the parish community
also. Celebrating the Solem-
nity of the Baptism of the Lord,
the archbishop highlighted the
importance of faithfully living
baptismal promises. He thanked
the Assumption faculty and the
parish community for making
his visit memorable. Earlier
during the week, Archbishop
Patron Wong joined the bishops
of Region X (Texas, Oklahoma
and Arkansas) for a fraternal
gathering and addressed them
on issues regarding seminary
formation with Pope Francis.
He also had lunch and met with
leaders at Oblate School of
Theology as part of his visit to
San Antonio.
With the beginning of the
spring semester at Assumption
Seminary, the theology students got into the retreat mode
of prayer and reflection, while
the college and pre-theology
students got busy with their
schoolwork.

cielo. Sin acercarse demasiado,
para no espantarla, le habló en
el tono que usan los cazadores
para tranquilizar a su presa,
y le explicó su necesidad de
casarse. Ella le hizo señas para
que se aproximara, lo observó
sin disimulo y debe haberle
complacido el aspecto del
viajero, porque decidió que la
idea del matrimonio no era del
todo descabellada. Mi padre tuvo
que trabajar para su suegro hasta
pagarle el valor de la mujer.
Después de cumplir con los ritos
de la boda, los dos hicieron el
viaje de regreso a nuestra aldea”.
Esta admirable viñeta de los
Cuentos de Eva Luna, escritos
por la popular novelista chilena
Isabel Allende, tiene un marcado
parecido a dos historias de la
Biblia. La primera de ellas trata
sobre el patriarca Isaac, cuya
esposa, a quien escogió su criado
en un viaje, tuvo que tomar la
decisión de volver con él para
casarse con un hombre a quien
jamás había visto. A diferencia
del padre de Walimai, el criado
tuvo joyas preciosas y vestidos
costosos para obsequiarles
a la novia escogida y a sus
familiares, mientras que el pobre
indígena del cuento tuvo que
trabajar para su suegro a fin de
ganarse a la mujer. Pero es eso
precisamente lo que nos lleva a
la segunda historia bíblica, pues
en ella el patriarca Jacob, hijo de
Isaac, también tuvo que trabajar
para su suegro —catorce años
en total— a fin de que éste le
entregara como esposa a su hija
menor.
Lo que tienen en común este
cuento de Isabel Allende y la
historia de Isaac es que los novios
no tuvieron la oportunidad de
conocerse ni de enamorarse antes
de contraer matrimonio, y sin
embargo, como suele suceder en
esos casos, parece que tuvieron
un matrimonio feliz. Si bien es
cierto que esta noción no es nada
popular en el mundo occidental
en la actualidad, de todos modos
corresponde a un modelo bíblico
de amor que sí debiera ser popular:
el amor que parte de una decisión
irrevocable y se nutre de ella y
del esfuerzo que acompaña a
esa decisión para seguir amando
hasta la muerte. Cristo nos ama a
nosotros a pesar de lo pecadores
que somos, y nos invita a que
correspondamos a ese inmerecido
amor. No importa si hasta ahora
no lo hemos conocido y por eso
no nos hemos enamorado de
él, porque conocerlo es amarlo.
Aceptemos, pues, su invitación,
y preparémonos para viajar con
Él de regreso a su hogar.

San Antonio celebró la Marcha MLK, la mayor en el país

El lunes 19 de enero una multitud estimada en más de ciento
cincuenta mil personas formó una
larga procesión en el 28 aniversario de la Marcha en Honor de
Martin Luther King Jr., ministro
religioso prócer de los derechos
civiles.
La celebración del Día de Martin Luther King Jr. fue presidida
por Ivy Taylor, alcaldesa de la
ciudad de San Antonio, a quien
acompañaron dirigentes laborales
y funcionario públicos.
La caminata anual, la mayor en
los Estados Unidos para celebrar
la memoria del Dr. King Jr.,
quien fue laureado con el Premio
Nobel de la Paz en 1964, partió a
las 10:00 de la mañana de MLK
Academy sobre el bulevar que
lleva su nombre, para finalizar en
el Pittman-Sullivan Park.
Martin Luther King Jr. fue
asesinado el 4 de abril de 1968 en
Memphis, Tennessee.

Cumpliendo con actividades
comunitarias de la fundación
Silver & Black Give Back (administrada por los Spurs) y su
programa Team Up Challenge, los
jugadores Steven Kampfer, defensa, y Michael Houser, portero del
equipo de hockey profesional San
Antonio Rampage (asociado a la
American Hockey League (AHL),
se unieron a un selecto grupo de
estudiantes de la escuela primaria
Colonial Hills Elementary, que
pertenece al North East Independent School District (NEISD).
Aparte de convocar a los estudiantes a llevar un sistema
alimenticio balanceado y realizar
ejercicios que los mantenga en
buen estado de salud, Kampfer
y Houser se dieron a la tarea
de convivir y divertirse durante
su visita a la magna exhibición
denominada H-E-B Body Adventure que se encuentra en el
Witte Museum, mismo que está
en etapas de remoción y modernización
Kampfer, de 26 años de edad,
nativo de Ann Arbor (Michigan),
contó sus experiencias como
jugador de hockey indicando
que desde el año 2007 marcó
su debut con el club Ducks de
Anaheim, jugando posteriormente
con las franquicias de los Bruins
de Boston, Wild de Minnesota,
Panthers de Florida y ahora con
Rampage. “Para lograrlo tuve la
fortuna de contar con el apoyo de
mi familia, alimentándome y ejercitándome correctamente, ya que
para jugar hockey se debe tener
gran constitución física y mental.
Cada día me preparo físicamente
ya sea en sesiones de prácticas o
porque tengo juego en puerta”,
afirmó Kampfer.
Por su parte el arquero Houser,
de 22 años de edad, nacido en
Youngstown, Ohio, comentó que
su carrera en el hockey profesional todavía lo mantiene como
prospecto, pero que dicho deporte
lo ha venido practicando desde
que tenía cuatro años de edad.
“He jugado para Rampage y el
equipo Panthers de Florida que
es el que me firmó, por lo que
continuo adelante preparándome
lo mejor que puedo para cada
partido y lo que se me asigne,
como este día que me ha tocado
convivir con ustedes para recomendarles qué actividades pueden
realizar tanto en su escuela como
en sus hogares, que se alimenten
correctamente y realicen diversas
actividades deportivas”, apuntó
Houser.
El programa Team Up Challenge encamina a estudiantes
a cumplir metas en programas
académicos en cinco categorías:
artes y cultura, educación, medio
ambiente, salud y ejercicio, servicio militar, en las que estudiantes
pueden contar con asesoría de
jugadores de los equipos Spurs,
Rampage y Stars de San Antonio.

La Sorrentina: Italian countryside in the barrio

“If you can make good food,
it doesn’t matter where you are
at. Happy customers are all that
matters,”
Those are the words of Chef
Pepe Rangel, owner of La
Sorrentina, a tiny cafe located
in the heart of Westside San
Antonio.
Wedged in between two residences; across from St. Mary’s
University, La Sorrentina is an
unassuming place that could
easily be missed if driving
down Culebra too fast. Doing
it would be a mistake, as within
lies some of the tastiest offerings the barrio has to offer.
Upon walking in the place,
it’s already considered a jewel.
With seven tables, and soft
piano music playing, this quaint
little eatery is nothing you
would expect from what is
considered the “rough” side of
town. It’s the perfect place for a
romantic, intimate dinner date.
Pepe’s wife, Norma, and
their wait staff are extremely
courteous and helpful, and
make everyone feel like they
are at home from the moment
they step inside the place. The
service was outstanding.
For three years, Rangel and
his family have been treating
the people on Westside to a
taste of the Italian Countryside.
Expect traditional classics,
chicken alfredo and parmesan,
pizzas, spaghetti, lasagna, subs
and even more.

side of town that serves mussels

Regarding taste and quality,
La Sorrentina is on par with
higher-end Italian restaurants
in the Alamo City. Chef Rangel
prepares every dish with impeccable care and love to ensure
the best product comes out. The
tiny details at this eatery really
sets it apart from others.
As a former chef of many of
the high-end Italian eateries in
town, Rangel’s knowledge of
the cuisine is extensive, and
shows in every dish.
The waiting time for food
may be a little bit longer than
average, but rest assured; everything is made fresh to order,
and totally worth it.
These details even come out
in the tiniest of appetizers. A
cup of cream of broccoli soup
is a work of art: a filigree cream
design that rivals those used
in the ritziest of coffee-shops.
Eating it was a shame, because
it was so aesthetically appealing. The soup was full of flavor, without being too clumpy,
or gooey, characteristics of
creamy soups. It was light, and
easy on the stomach.
Salads are a work of art, and
La Sorrentina’s house dressing
is a delightful vinaigrette, with
a medley of Italian herbs and
spices that intrigue the mouth
with every bite.
Bread was made in-house,
baked to a perfect golden
brown, warm and buttery, with
a slight hint of sweet basil. That
slight flavor really made the
bread stand out. Dipping into
the dressing made it even better.
One of La Sorrentina’s specialty dishes is the Tri-Colored
Chicken. A lightly breaded filet
of chicken is placed upon a bed
of spaghetti and tomato sauce,
a layer of melted mozzarella
cheese separates the meat from
the pasta. Atop the chicken,
sun-dried tomatoes, marinated
artichoke hearts and sprigs of
fresh asparagus are carefully
placed.
The chicken is void of any
fat or skin, and is so tender,
it can be cut with only a fork.
The blend of savory tomatoes,
a slight sour taste from the
artichoke hearts, and the green
flavor from the asparagus blend
into a fusion that is an utter
delight for the palate. Biting
into the spaghetti rounds out
the dish, and brings the flavor
back home.
Chef Rangel’s food has attracted many regulars and others that drive a distance to eat
his creations.
“You’ll be hooked,” a regular
customer of La Sorrentina said.
“Once I tried the chicken parmesan here, I never went back
to Olive Garden. It’s so close to
home, too.”
His Westside restaurant is a
major success, but in the beginning, his endeavor didn’t go
without criticism.
“I feel great about it [La Sorrentina],” Rangel stated. “At
first, people didn’t give me a
chance, saying I wasn’t going
to make it, and I said ‘we’ll
see.’ This side of town doesn’t
have a restaurant like this, and
that’s why I decided to do it. I
think my food has spoken for
itself if we have been here for
this long. We hope that people
continue to appreciate the food,
and keep coming back.”
For those that love Italian
food, or looking for a small
place to have a romantic, intimate dinner date, La Sorrentina
is definitely worth a try. As a
small family-owned business,
they will work hard to ensure
your visit is enjoyable.

“American Sniper”, un misil en la taquilla
que siembra el debate en Hollywood
EFE - “American Sniper”, la
película de Clint Eastwood sobre el
francotirador Chris Kyle, ha batido
multitud de récords en taquilla, pero
sobre todo ha sembrado el debate
y la polémica por su elevado tono
patriótico que ha provocado incluso
comparaciones con la “propaganda
nazi”.
La cinta, protagonizada por
Bradley Cooper, arrasó la cartelera
estadounidense durante el fin de
semana largo –fue festivo el lunes,
Día de Martin Luther King Jr.– con
107,3 millones de dólares, el mejor
estreno de la Historia para una
película no asociada a una franquicia de Hollywood.
La mejor marca previa correspondía a los 83,8 millones de
dólares logrados por “The Passion
of the Christ”, dirigida por Mel
Gibson, una década atrás.
Se trata, asimismo, del mejor
estreno en la carrera de Eastwood,
el mejor debut jamás registrado en
el mes de enero y el mejor de la
historia para un drama.
“Se trata de un fenómeno cultural

y sus dos hijos pequeños, después

Y qué duda cabe que este éxito
puede traducirse en estatuillas doradas llegada la ceremonia de los
Óscar el próximo 22 de febrero,
aunque, de momento, el proyecto
no ha conquistado los corazones de
todos en Hollywood.
“‘American Sniper’ me recuerda
un poco a la película que se muestra en el tercer acto de ‘Inglorious
Basterds’”, escribió en la red social
Twitter el actor Seth Rogen.
Esa cinta a la que se refería era
“Stolz der Nation”, una obra ficticia de propaganda nazi, donde un
francotirador alemán asesinaba a
soldados aliados desde una torre.
Posteriormente, Rogen reculó,
aclaró que “American Sniper” le
Bradley Cooper interpretando a Chris Kyle en la película “American Sniper”, que es por el momento la más popular en taquilla

gustó y recalcó que solamente “le
recordaba” a esa escena, sin querer
entrar en comparaciones.
También se pronunció en contra
el agitador de conciencias Michael
Moore, conocido por su documental
“Bowling for Columbine” (2002).
“Mi tío fue asesinado por un
francotirador en la II Guerra Mundial. Nos enseñaron que los francotiradores eran unos cobardes. Te
dispararán por la espalda. No son
héroes. Y los invasores son peores”,
escribió Moore en Twitter, causando
una gran polémica.
Moore, horas después, indicó que
no hacía alusión a la obra de Eastwood, sino a la conmemoración del
Día de Martin Luther King Jr., que
fue asesinado por un francotirador.
Y, de paso, en su perfil de Facebook, criticó que Eastwood confunda “Vietnam con Iraq al contar
la historia” y que haga que los
personajes “llamen a los iraquíes
salvajes a lo largo del filme”.
Los Caracoles celebran cuarenta años de éxito

La versátil agrupación Los
Caracoles es originaria de la
localidad La Rinconada, en el
municipio Emiliano Zapata (Veracruz, México). Sus orígenes se
remontan a la década de los 70’s
cuando los hermanos Juan Carlos,
Tomás y Clemente Contreras
Pérez, quien se ha desempeñado
como director musical y compositor, en el año 1975 tuvieron
la inquietud de formar su propio
conjunto musical.
Ya integrado el grupo en busca
de una mayor difusión de su
variado estilo musical (en principio fue tropical, posteriormente
cambiaron a baladas románticas
y luego dieron el estirón en el
ámbito roquero) optaron por
trasladarse a la ciudad de Xalapa,
en su mismo estado natal donde
sentaron raíces y han radicado por
espacio de cuatro décadas.
“Originalmente integramos Los
Caracoles con ocho músicos. De
los que quedan cuatro que somos
los fundadores y base principal
del grupo. Nuestro variado repertorio nos ha dado las oportunidades de compartir honores con
grandes agrupaciones musicales e
intérpretes de fama internacional,
lo cual nos ha sostenido en los
mejores lugares de la farándula
internacional”, contó el maestro
Clemente Contreras.
Los Caracoles se han ganado
su propio nicho en la industria
disquera y en el espectáculo
internacional. Su versatilidad
musical ha sido gran parte de
su éxito. A ello se suma la indumentaria y maquillaje que desde
el año 1984 decidieron cambiar
para darle una imagen roquera,
vistiendo pantalones ajustados,

por influyentes empresarios que
viendo en ellos sus ganas de triunfar a nivel internacional los han

invitaciones para realizar giras
promocionales en la ciudad de
Guatemala y en Estados Unidos.
En este país se han presentado
exitosamente en festivales de gran
tradición como “Viva Chicago”,
que tradicionalmente se presenta
en el mes de septiembre en la
ciudad de los vientos. Allí han
compartido escenarios con los
grupos y artistas de la talla de
“Maldita Vecindad”, Café Tacuba, Wilfrido Vargas, y solistas
como Vikki Carr, y Willie Colón.

Caracoles tuvieron el gran honor
de trabajar al lado del legendario
Ramón Ayala y Los Bravos
del Norte, así como la siempre
dinámica y controvertida actriz y
cantante Gloria Trevi.
En la ciudad de Miami, Los
Caracoles recuerdan que nunca
olvidarán la visita que realizaron
al mundialmente famoso show
televisivo “El Show de El Gordo
y La Flaca”, encabezado por sus
presentadores Lili Estefan y Raúl
de Molina, quienes los ubicaron
por el sendero del éxito, y de lo
cual siempre estarán agradecidos.
“En nuestra trayectoria musical hemos tenido la fortuna de

creatividad y metas de los niños,
en el que se mostrarán tradiciones
y cultura de sus raíces.
“¡Este año Los Caracoles serán
grandes, muy grandes!”, apuntó el
líder de Los Caracoles, quienes
han tenido la gran ventaja de tener
entre ellos a su propio compositor
musical en la persona del maestro
Clemente Contreras Pérez.
Pérez en la trigésima séptima
producción musical para Mundicd
Music del grupo incluyó nueve
temas de su inspiración y puño,
cuyo disco sencillo se titula ‘Los
Súper Caracoles’ en el que se
desprenden los temas: Dile que
vuelva, El Kamazutra, En Chavo
sin varo, El Mojado, Mi Pajarito,
La Vecindad, Como Agua Pa’
Chocolate, Como baila mi Gorda,
y Como se te nota la P.
A este disco le añadieron
tres temas titulado Parodiando
La Cumbia, con las canciones
Dulce de Coco (autor pendiente),
Conozco una Negra, del compositor Carlos Muñiz, y la de mayor
éxito “Juan La Cubana”, del
grande compositor y saxofonista
Rodolfo “Fito” Olivares.
El debate se ha extendido,
lógicamente, a las redes sociales,
donde se pone en duda que Kyle,
considerado un “asesino” por
algunos, sea merecedor de tanta
atención.
De hecho, según informa la web
especializada TheWrap, en las
últimas horas ha circulado entre los
académicos un artículo de la revista
“The New Republic” donde se ataca
a la película por haber convertido a
Kyle en un héroe.
En el texto se recogen frases del
francotirador procedentes de su
libro “American Sniper”, como:
“Los enemigos son salvajes y despreciablemente malvados”, o “Mi
único arrepentimiento es no haber
matado a más”.
La polémica está servida, como
demuestra el gran cartel publicitario de la película que amaneció el
martes en Los Ángeles (California)
acompañado por un grafiti, con letras rojas, que rezaba: “¡Asesinato!”.

more personnel capable of providing a richer perspective on
what diversity means, Eva Longoria, a U.S. actress, director and
producer of Mexican descent,
said here at a National Association of Television Program
Executives forum.
The head of the UnbeliEVAble Entertainment production
company said Thursday on the
NATPE panel titled “Sharpening
the focus: How U.S. networks are
engaging the Hispanic audience”
that it is not only important to
have Hispanic talent in front of
the camera but also Latino writers who able to depict reality in
general.
Longoria, best known for her
work on the ABC television
series “Desperate Housewives,”
referred to her new project with
NBC, the comedic primetime
soap opera “Telenovela” in
which she stars and is one of the
producers, and offered herself as
an example of what the “American public” is.
“The perspective is basically
mine. It’s about a telenovela star
who doesn’t speak Spanish,” the
39-year-old native of Corpus
Christi, Texas, said, noting that
despite her “strong ties” to Hispanic culture she only recently
began learning Spanish.
Longoria recalled that she
was introduced to Hispanic soap
operas, or telenovelas, by her
friends and would have been able
to understand them even with the
volume turned off.
“That’s what we’re trying to
do. It’s a mainstream show that
has lots of Latin culture,” she
said.
For his part, Longoria’s boyfriend, Jose Antonio Baston,
Mexican broadcasting giant
Televisa’s president of TV and
Content, told Efe that “it’s obvious that there’s a Hispanic
potential in the (U.S.) market,
due to the enormous number of
Latinos in the United States and
their purchasing power.”
He therefore recommended
that U.S. production companies
“use Latin roots and of course
actors who identify with them.”

Lately, I have realized, through
an obnoxious amount of time
spent playing games, that games
are longer than they used to
be. That goes double for the
titles that came out around the
holidays. For some reason, every
game I received around that time
were open-world behemoths.
The ubiquity of open-world
games is becoming the norm.
Games like “Grand Theft Auto
V,” “Dragon Age: Inquisition,”
“Far Cry 4,” and “Shadow of
Mordor” offer plenty of gameplay across vast open-worlds
with no shortage of side quests to
keep you tied to your TV.
The open-world experience is
a great one, it overwhelms and
is entertaining all in one breath.
But what about those of us
that are achievement and trophy
junkies? That usually entails
having to play a game triple the
amount of time for someone that
selects medium difficulty and
runs through the primary objectives overnight only to gloat and
move to the next game.
I have an obsessive compul-
sive disorder when it comes to
finishing every aspect of a game,
especially games that I really
enjoy. I don’t remember when
it happened, but I found myself
salivating like Pavlov’s dog
at the chime that would sound
when an achievement was accomplished.
It started with finishing games
on the hardest difficulty setting,
and slowly turned into retrieving
collectible items to nothing less
than finishing every single thing
there is to finish in the game.
I looked at my total progress
last night on “Far Cry 4” and
realized that I have put 30 hours
into that title alone. The most
shocking part was I’m still only
60 percent of the way through
it. The side quests have run the
gambit from bomb diffusing,
races, survival quests and hunting rare animals.
I know for a fact that my time
in “Dragon Age: Inquisition” has
far surpassed my time in “Far
Cry” the massive weight of undertaking a 100 percent completion in “Dragon Age” actually
felt like I was the one taking on
a quest. And like any good hero,
I was willing to sacrifice in order
to reach my goal. Unfortunately,

CDs or MP3s.
“It’s a process, from when
you buy it, you open the cover,
the smell ... so many things,”
Mexican immigrant Gildegar
Sanchez told Efe. He has built up
a collection of 500 vinyl records
and works as as a DJ in Chicago
galleries and coffee shops.
Sanchez emphasized that the
vinyl record experience “cannot
be compared” to purchasing CDs
or Internet downloads.
Vinyl was king until the 1990s,
when CDs emerged as the dominant format for recorded music.
Nowadays, when different
formats are available, including
digital and streaming, vinyl records retain a devoted following
among collectors and music lovers who keep used-record stores
in business.
“In recent years, there has been
a resurgence of interest in vinyl
LPs,” Christian Priebe, manager
of the Dusty Groove record shop
in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood, told Efe.

detalles de su próximo proyecto,
“Los Cowboys”, una serie de
telerrealidad que pretende reflejar cómo la nueva generación de
charros “vive una doble vida” en
Estados Unidos.
“(Los latinos) viven entre una
vida muy hispana, muy mexicana,
pero de repente se cambian a una
vida muy anglo, muy normal.
Es la manera de mostrar qué
versátiles somos como raza,
como hispanos, dentro de Estados Unidos”, dijo a Efe Corral
al margen de la feria de la Asociación Nacional de Ejecutivos de
Programas de Televisión (Natpe)
que se celebró en Miami hasta el
jueves.
Corral, de 29 años, espera que
este programa, que se estrenará el
próximo 26 de enero, pueda convencer al público estadounidense
con una temática relacionada con
la cultura mexicana y los rodeos.
La serie, que consta de diez
capítulos de media hora, girará en
torno a un grupo de charros que
intentan preservar esta tradición
en Estados Unidos.
Corral dijo que, en un principio,
le costó poder vender esta serie a
las cadenas de televisión convencionales hasta que la plataforma
de vídeo a la carta “Hulu” apostó
por él, y sus directivos decidieron
dar forma a “Los Cowboys”.
El productor, amante de esta
disciplina deportiva, confesó
que cuando se propuso llevar a
cabo este proyecto no pensó en
dirigirse exclusivamente a un
público latino, sino que quería
abarcar todo el público de Estados
Unidos.
“¿Por qué cuando juntamos a
latinos frente a la cámara tiene
que ser algo solo para hispanos?”,
se preguntó, al tiempo que reconoció que, “como productor, la meta
es producir algo con una buena
historia”.
A pesar de sus intenciones,
Corral está seguro de que los latinos que sigan esta producción se
identificarán con los personajes
que aparecen en ella, pues, en su
opinión, “refleja la experiencia de
los hispanos” en este país y “el
orgullo de ser latino”.
Corral, original de Los Ángeles
pero de ascendencia mexicana,
reconoce que sus padres siempre
se han esforzado en inculcarle sus
raíces culturales, de manera que
él se identifica perfectamente con
la comunidad latina.
“Cuando terminaba la escuela,
todos los veranos me las pasaba
en Durango (México), en un pueblecito de la sierra. La verdad es
que esa cultura y la pasión que yo
tengo se deben a esas experiencias”,
apuntó.
El productor, de 29 años, señaló que “no hay por qué olvidar
nuestras raíces” y aseguró que
“lo más bonito es ser diferente”.
“Antes no era tan ‘cool’ (bonito) ser hispano, pero ahora sí
lo es. ¿Quién no lo quisiera ser?”,
explicó.
Sobre esta cuestión, el también
actor dijo que estrellas como
“Sofía Vergara, William Levy
o George López” han ayudado a
que esta minoría destaque entre la
sociedad estadounidense.
Los personajes que aparecen
en “Los Cowboys” son, en realidad, los amigos y la familia de
Alejandro Corral, algo que dotará
al programa de más autenticidad.
“Como todos nos conocemos
durante mucho tiempo es algo
muy orgánico, es una amistad
de muchos años y hay mucha
química entre nosotros”, expresó.
Corral admitió estar “sorprendido” con el resultado final de la
serie porque “mucha gente que
no es hispana la han visto” y se
han quedado “cautivados” con la
historia del “mundo desconocido”
de “Los Cowboys”.
Por el momento no quiere “ni
pensar” en la acogida que pueda
tener el programa estadounidense,
aunque tiene la certeza de que “le
va a gustar a la gente”.

en la industria de la televisión y
ha trabajado para FOX, ESPN y
Shine America, junto Elisabeth

Yes, sweet sleep and the ability
to function with all motor skills.
I can’t say any of that time
is regrettable time though. I
have enjoyed every challenging
moment of those open-worlds.
However, if the trend of sandbox
games continues will gamers find
themselves no longer able to
enjoy open-world games?
Games like “Destiny” (while
not as large as others) throws in
the bonus of being able to team
up with a team of friends and
grind your way into higher levels
and makes it a social experience
to remember, even while it tricks
you with its obvious tedium.
I can’t help but feel that if I
could team up with friends in
my game of “Dragon Age” that
I would be having more fun in

offer up a nice change when
going through the million side
missions.
Only time will tell how long
the open-world trend stays
around but for now I’m mostly
content and enjoying the freedom
to kill any dang bear I want in

Vinyl records withstand the digital onslaught
EFE - There is something in
the experience of opening the
cover, sliding a vinyl record out
of its sleeve and placing it on a
turntable that continues to fascinate music lovers, as reflected in
a substantial increase of sales in
the United States.
Reports of vinyl’s death have
turned out to be premature and in
a world of increasingly digitalized
media 9.2 million LPs were sold
last year in the United States, a
51.8 percent increase over 2013,
according to Nielsen data.
Music downloads from the Internet fell 9 percent last year in the
case of albums and 12 percent for
single songs, Nielsen Soundscan
reported. Sales of CDs, which
were supposed to replace the
vinyl record, tumbled 13 percent
to 140 million.
In the United Kingdom, 1 million vinyl records were sold last
year, the most since 1996, according to the Official UK Charts
Company.
Vinyl loyalists hold that the 12inch discs provide an experience

albums from Fania, the label of
the major salsa stars in the ‘70s
and ‘80s.
Priebe agrees that traditional
vinyl records offer the listener
a better experience than other
formats.
“The old 33 1/3 RPM vinyl
records are a better format,” he
said. “They have a better sound
and they are more tangible.”
Sanchez said his love affair
with vinyl records began when
he was 8 years old and his mother
bought him his first record, a recording by the Spanish children’s
group Parchis.
“I would play it day after day,”
he said.
The collector said the vinyl
format gives consumers more for
their money, including the cover
art and the liner notes.
“The vinyl culture will not
yield, it will not end, it will continue,” Sanchez said.

manages to stay afloat

Óscar de la Hoya prepara un canal de
televisión en español para EE.UU.
EFE - El exboxeador Óscar de
la Hoya anunció que la próxima
primavera lanzará un canal de
televisión de deportes, viajes y estilo de vida en español destinado
al público hispano de Estados
Unidos.
“El canal se va a mezclar con el
turismo, la moda y el boxeo. Vamos a ir más allá del boxeo, aunque
hablaremos de los boxeadores, sus
destinos preferidos, los vehículos que llevan...”, dijo a Efe De
la Hoya tras la presentación del
proyecto durante la feria de la
Asociación Nacional de Ejecutivos de Programas de Televisión
(Natpe), que se celebró en Miami
hasta el jueves.
El “Golden Boy”, que ganó
diez títulos mundiales y un oro
olímpico, explicó que el lanzamiento de “De la Hoya TV” nace
con la intención de convertirse en
un canal de referencia en español
dirigido a la comunidad latina en
Estados Unidos amante de los
deportes de combate.
Durante el anuncio, De la Hoya
también confirmó que, en un futuro cercano, quiere expandirse por
la región y transmitir su contenido
original, con más de mil horas al
año, a través de las plataformas
de cable en México y América
Latina.
“Este es un proyecto donde
puedo demostrar a la gente latina
que en este país sí se puede. Para
mí siempre se ha tratado de eso,
de demostrar a mis fans que con
esfuerzo y trabajo en esta vida
sí se puede lograr”, expresó el
exboxeador angelino.
De la Hoya explicó que durante
la feria Natpe se ha reunido con
los directivos de las principales
compañías de cable de Estados
Unidos y México, y en los próximos días anunciará los acuerdos
alcanzados.
La leyenda del boxeo admitió
estar “muy emocionado” porque,
por fin, “el fan va a poder vivir ese
estilo de vida que tiene su atleta
favorito”.
En su opinión, este canal de
televisión, cuyo lanzamiento está
previsto para principios de abril,
será lo que a él le hubiera gustado
ver cuando era más joven.
Por ese motivo, explicó, seguirá
muy de cerca el proceso de producción de los contenidos.
“Hubiese estado contentísimo
de mostrar a mi público y a mis
fans cómo vivo, cuáles son mis
destinos favoritos en México y en
Europa”, explicó De la Hoya, que
se mostró convencido de que sus
seguidores “quieren mucho más
que boxeo”.
Para este proyecto, el exboxeador
cuenta con el respaldo del empresario televisivo Víctor Hugo
Montero y José Alberto Gómez,
destacado promotor de duelos de
boxeo en México.

I miss good submarine films.
The depths of the ocean are one
of the scariest places you can take
a film. Anything goes wrong and
you are dead in the water. Films
like “Das Boot,” “The Hunt for
Red October,” and “U-571”
come to mind when I think of
those kinds of films. They are
few and far between, most likely
because they are hard to correctly
land.
The most recent submarinebased film “Black Sea” is a
different take on the genre. It
throws in lots of suspense and
even some Nazi gold. With all
that being said, there still isn’t
enough left in this one to make
it stay above water.
“Black Sea” finds Captain
Robinson (Jude Law) losing his
employment. When he and some
work mates become desperate
for money, they take work for
a benefactor who wants them to
find a hidden Nazi submarine that
sank during World War II in order to secure a huge gold payload
that it was hauling when it sank.
Robinson begins making his
team out of both Russian and
British crewmembers, and he
takes them out to sea in order to
find the lost gold.
Up until this point the film is
strong enough on its own and
feels like it has something to
offer, but the lack of character
development early on separates
the audience from the crew. Plus,
there are simply too many crew
mates to keep up with.
This film is a ridiculous amount
of bad choices compounded upon
bad choices. Almost to the extent that you will find yourself
questioning why any benefactor
would have singled out an inept
Captain to lead this expedition.
The crew begins turning on
each other early on and falls into
the blueprint of a simple heist
movie.
There are some bits of suspense that work but it would
have connected more if we knew
who any of the characters were.
“Black Sea” has trouble finding
what kind of film it wants to be
and it shows. What starts off as
a strong idea that could have
been a fun film ends up floating
somewhere between action and
drama and zig-zags between the
two way too often.
Once the crew starts dropping
like flies and you find yourself
asking who just died it, becomes
clear that the film missed the
drama mark and should have just
settled on the action/suspense.
The end result is a movie that is
just under 2 hours feeling a little
bit too long and a lot of suspense
that could have been getting
flushed out the porthole.

Nicolas Cage tratará de capturar a Bin
Laden en solitario en “Army of One”
EFE - El actor Nicolas Cage
será el protagonista de la comedia satírica “Army of One”, una
película inspirada en la historia real
de un trabajador de la construcción
que se propone capturar a Osama
bin Laden por su cuenta, según
informó esta semana la web
especializada The Hollywood
Reporter.
La cinta contará con el director de “Borat”, “Bruno” y “The
Dictator” como realizador, Larry
Charles, y será producida por The
Weinstein Company.
La idea del filme nació de un
Nicholas Cage en una escena de “Ghost Rider”. Pero en su nueva próxima película interpretará a artículo publicado en la revista

de Gary Faulkner, un obrero del
estado de Colorado (EEUU) que
viajó hasta Pakistán para dar con
el líder de Al Qaeda.
Faulkner terminó por ser detenido en 2010 por la policía en
ese país asiático, donde le requisaron
una pistola, una espada samurái,
un cuchillo, gafas de visión nocturna y literatura cristiana.
El sujeto, un expresidiario,
fue enviado a EEUU, donde se
convirtió en famoso de la noche
a la mañana, y en 2011 volvió
a la cárcel tras protagonizar un
altercado con unos vecinos en el
que disparó un arma de fuego.
Cage está desde 2008 tratando de resolver sus serios problemas fiscales después de años
de grandes gastos y una mala
gestión financiera, agudizada
por la crisis económica que le
llevaron a deber 14 millones de
dólares en impuestos.
Tan solo en los últimos cinco
años ha estrenado 20 películas,
casi el doble que en el lustro
anterior.

Estoy frustrada porque la familia de mi esposo no me quiere.
Me hacen sentir incómoda cada
vez que los veo y además siempre
se burlan de mí. Ahora mi esposo
y yo peleamos porque no nos
entendemos y a él le molestan
cosas que antes no le molestaban.

me dejé y les dije que no me gustaba que estuvieran faltándome al
respeto de esa manera. Ellos se indignaron y me dijeron que era una
persona muy aprehensiva y que
no aguantaba nada. Ahora yo me
siento como la mala del cuento
y no sé qué debo hacer para solucionar el problema porque mi
esposo también me dijo que no
fuera insegura. Dime por favor
qué debo hacer al respecto.
Querida novia frustrada:
Entiendo cómo te sientes y me
imagino que tu situación es difícil
por cómo me la platicas, pero yo
creo que todas las familias tienen
sus cosas buenas y sus lados
malos también. Lo que tú debes
hacer es hablar con tu pareja y
hacerle saber que cada familia
es distinta y que no te importa
mucho eso; sin embargo, para
salir adelante tú y él como pareja
necesitan apoyarse el uno al otro
y no permitir que nada ni nadie
los separe.
Te recomiendo que tú no hables
con su familia del tema, porque
principalmente es su familia y
él es quien debe hacerse cargo
del tema.
Por otro lado, recuerda que lo
más importante es que tú y tu
esposo crezcan como pareja cada
día y que la paciencia y el amor
los ayude a perdurar. No olvides
que muchas personas se van a
interponer en tu relación, pero
solo tú y él sabrán la realidad de
la situación.

A cocktail of community
camaraderie and pleasant surprises

Even though the fourth year of
the San Antonio Cocktail Conference is over, it was still an experience of a life time.
It’s the weekend after, and I
describe it as the classic comical
scenario where someone is standing alone in a frame and suddenly
trampled by a stampede for a
quick second then left frazzled
as to what just happened. I mean
that in the best way possible,
of course. I would go so far as
calling it the SXSW of cocktails
because there was so much going
on at one time. There were events
after events combining new concoctions in some of the oldest,
most historical places such as the
Empire and St. Anthony Hotel.
Social drinking is a timeless
activity that takes place over business and leisure, throw in the fact
that it is for a good cause, in this
case Houston Street Charities, and
you have a recipe for a cocktail
of community camaraderie that
benefits everyone.
I say this because according
to a study done by the city itself,
San Antonio River Authority and
the Passeo del Rio Commission
entitled “Impact of the San Antonio River Walk”, it states “These
non-resident visitors mostly come
from around Texas, but some
come from around the world.
They spend about $2.4 billion
each year, which supports more
than 31,000 jobs.”
Yes the Alamo is always breathtaking, yes the river barge ride is a
must-do for first timers, but what

amazes me about our fine city,
is the fact that we’ve been able
to expand tourism into parts just
outside of downtown area, more
specifically, Southtown, and expanding towards neighborhoods
in need of assistance.
Restaurants and bars around
our beloved area are nationally
accredited by sources such as
USA Today and that’s a pretty
big deal for the city. It generates
revenue and jobs. SACC 2015
brought in new opportunities for
even more tourism and branching out our local community and
turning them onto what’s new and
happening in the cocktail world
and even inspiring the invention
of new cocktails.
While my taste buds were very
much entertained with explosions
of new flavors and excitement,
my ear buds were also very
surprised and excited when Los
Straightjackets came out and
performed at the after party at
the Empire.
Los Straightjackets are an in-
strumental surf-rock band who
have been around since the ‘80s
who wear Mexican lucha libre
masks. There is no genre of music
I enjoy more than surf-punk, surfrock, or just surf in general.
Surf has been around since
the days of the Beach Boys and
Dick Dale who are basically the
founding fathers of the genre. Los
Straightjackets have remained
key players of the game and have
been at this since 1988. With all
music and musicians who have
been in the game for a long period
of time, the sound may change
and derive into something new.
But not with Los Straightjackets,
they stick to their key roots of
what true Surf is with their light
yet prominent guitar riffs. Imagine my surprise when I walked in,
heard those strings, and saw their
signature luchador masks.
Experimental cocktails and my
favorite kind of music, what more
can I say? Cocktail Conference,
I am in love and look forward to
next year!
