Ocular Communion
Encountering the Poor: Biblical Roots for
Catholic Social Teaching
During the Middle Ages, when the emphasis was on the
people’s unworthiness to receive Holy Communion, people
basically stopped receiving. The priest continued to receive,
because that was mandated for a valid Mass. The whole idea of
Holy Communion as a meal for spiritual nourishment was lost
in favor of the focus on sacrifice. It got to where so few people
participated in receiving Holy Communion that the church put
the Easter Duty law into effect, requiring reception of the
Eucharist at least once a year. Meanwhile the emphasis was on
what is referred to as "ocular communion," or "feasting" on the
sight of the consecrated host when it was elevated at Mass. For
many years this took the place of the actual reception of the
sacrament.
Dr. Timothy Gray is the president of the Augustine Institute
and is a well-known scripture scholar and Catholic speaker.
With his eloquent style and polished delivery, Dr. Gray
expounds upon the
teachings of the Catholic
Church surrounding social
justice in light of sacred
scripture. Discover how
social justice in regards to
the poor is not one small
piece in the puzzle but
instead really frames the
entire mosaic of scripture.
CD’s are available in the
Gathering Space for $3.00
each.
Reflecting on God’s Word
Today we hear how Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through the streets of Nineveh, scaring the citizens out of their
wits. And it works! God has a change of heart, seeing "by their actions" how the people turn from evil (Jonah 3:10). A new day
dawns. Next we hear Paul telling the Corinthians, "The world in its present form is passing away" (1 Corinthians 7:31). He calls for
a change of heart. Stopping short of telling them to stop carrying out their everyday activities, he urges them--rather mysteriously--to
live "as though" they aren't doing the things they are doing. A new day has dawned.
Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, "The kingdom of God is at hand!" (Mark 1:14). Simon and Andrew abandon their nets-and even their father--and follow him. A new day had dawned. Everyone has to change when a new day dawns: the Ninevites, the
Corinthians, the apostles, even Jesus! Didn't a new day dawn today for us as well?
TIME IS ALWAYS SHORT
Paul warned the Corinthians, "[T]he time is running out" (1 Corinthians 7:29). In reflective moments, we know time is always short.
There is a story told of a holy Sufi who, asked what grace had brought him, said that he awoke each morning feeling he might not
live till evening. His questioner objected that "everyone" knows that. "Everyone knows it," the Sufi agreed, "but not everyone feels
it." There's a difference between knowing something and feeling it so much that it changes our lives. The people of Nineveh "knew"
all along what God wanted. But it took a Jonah to wake them up, make them feel what that meant, so that they would reform their
actions--not "next year," not "after the kids are grown," not "later"--but now! In the Gospel we see those first disciples immediately
leave boats and nets, even families, to follow Jesus. They not only knew, but they felt, that time was short. The time to act, always,
is now.
"THIS IS THE TIME OF FULFILLMENT"
It's not only that a truck might leap the curb, careen down the sidewalk, and sweep us away. That's possible. But it's also possible
that we walk life's sidewalk, day after day, living as though we are not living, putting our lives off until later. God has placed dreams
in our hearts, but we might not get to them. We put them off. Maybe there's an attitude or a habit we'd like to put aside, knowing
that we'd be better, happier, if we did. Maybe there's a group we'd like to help, a person we'd like to get closer to, a child whose
growing up we would like to share. But we'd have to do something, not merely plan to do it someday. There is no tomorrow, you
know. There really isn't. There's only today, this moment. Time is short. God is not later . . . in the sky . . . if we're good girls and
boys. "This is the time of fulfillment! The kingdom of God is at hand! Repent and believe in the gospel!" (Mark 1:14).

In the Footsteps of John Paul II
A Journey to Poland
10 days — June 16-25, 2015
“They have called him from a distant country, distant but
always so close through the communion in the Christian faith
and tradition…” said Saint Pope John Paul II in his first
speech after his election. I came to serve you from the same
distant country—Poland. I invite you to visit Poland with me
this summer.
Let’s celebrate and deepen our faith by visiting Shrines
and Churches, mountains, and mines in Poland. Let’s be
moved and challenged by the lives of Franciscan Friars and
Sisters, by Saint John Paul II, by Saint Faustina. The music of
Polish Polkas and Chopin’s Mazurkas will have our feet and
spirits dancing. And there is always time for shopping for
beautiful Polish handicrafts. Let’s be off to Poland for a
beautiful experience of mind, spirit, and heart.

Baptism Preparation Ministry
Preparation for Baptism is not just the technical details of
the event or a grand theological presentation. Baptism
preparation involves speaking of all the Sacraments and how
they affect your life. Baptism is just the start of the journey of
spiritual life.
We are seeking couples around 30 to 50 years old, who
have children in St. Pius School or Faith Formation or even
beyond who can give the presentation and give witness to the
Catholic family journey. You do not have be the holiest family
at St. Pius, just normal.
Unless there is a holiday, Baptism Preparation is held on
the first Monday of each month. If several couples volunteer
for this ministry, then the commitment may be 3 times per year.
Please contact Dn Larry at 630-629-9234 or

a anteriores procederes.
tenuemente nuestros campamentos veraniegos? ¿O de las plumas
estilográficas, que llenaron tantos cuadernos de apuntes? Algunos
“Tú me has mirado a los ojos, sonriendo has dicho mi nombre…”
rezar fervorosamente? Es un ejemplo de termómetro espiritual
que os podéis aplicar.

The 2015 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal — “Extending God’s Mercy”
Bishop Conlon’s mailing asking for a pledge to the 2015
Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) is in the hands of
many of our parishioners. If you have received the mailing,
please respond as soon as possible. If you have not received it,
please contact our parish office at 630-627-4526.
We are called by the Gospel to be a light unto others. By
showing mercy to those in need, by helping build the kingdom of
God in our own parish and our own diocese, we are a like the
morning light. Please shine bright by making a generous gift to
the CMAA.
This year, the theme of the Appeal is “Extending God’s Mercy.”
Pope Francis recently said that Mercy “goes beyond in such a
way that sin is put to the side. It is like heaven. We look at the
sky, there are many, many stars; but when the sun rises in the
morning, the light is such that we can’t see the stars. God’s
mercy is like that: a great light of love and tenderness.”
The CMAA funds the mission and ministries of our diocese. It
also funds services that are of great help to the ministries here in
our parish. Please answer the bishop’s request and make a
generous pledge. All pledges can be paid in 10 installments.
Thank you in advance for your support.
