GRATITUDE
Though most people would agree that we should be grateful for the good
things we have received, thanking someone is not always the first thing
that comes to mind when we receive something good from them. In
Luke's Gospel, when Jesus healed the ten lepers, only one of them came
back to thank him. The inclination to give thanks is the virtue of gratitude
and is our way of showing thanks for the benefits we have received.
Gratitude is the part of justice whereby we pay what is due to our
benefactors. It is distinguished from the virtue of religion where we pay
what is due to God and piety where we pay what is due to our parents.
Ultimately God is the source of all good things, and so all our
indebtedness is primarily due to Him, but part of the debt we owe to God
is to be paid by honoring our parents and showing gratitude to our
benefactors.
St Thomas argues that, as far as possible, we should always show
gratitude to our benefactors, but the way and the extent to which we show
our gratitude varies according to circumstances. People may do us favors
for a variety of mixed motives, but when we excel in the virtue of
gratitude, we more readily see the good in people's actions rather than the
evil, and it is for the good that we give them thanks
It doesn't depend so much on the deed itself, but that the heart of the giver
is directed for the good of the receiver. Likewise, the gratitude shown
should originate in the heart. No matter how poor someone is, they can
still show honor and speak well of the giver. In other situations, the
receiver can show their gratitude by doing some act of kindness in return.
In no situation, should gratitude be shown out of a desire not to be
indebted to someone. But part of the virtue of gratitude is being happy to
be indebted to someone. The virtue of gratitude involves choosing the
appropriate moment for repaying a favor.
The great challenge in being truly grateful is that it is not enough just to
return what has been received. Since the original gift was freely given,
the favor returned should also be freely given. This implies something
more has to be paid back, and we are only able to do this if we let
gratitude flow from our hearts.

A Time to Think
Brothers and Sisters, how is your spirit? How are your resolutions
coming for this New Year? The “gurus” of the mind and liars of daily
life tell stories on how to make effective decisions. Resolutions are a
good opportunity to meet the objectives long ago we abandoned in areas
of health, finances, relationships, or love. This is the time of year where
incentives and memberships increased in fitness clubs even more than
summer and beach time. However, as the weeks progress our January resolutions often
fall by the wayside. A survey indicates that many people leave their New Year
resolutions after 3 and a half weeks this Friday, January 23 could be referred to as
Failure Friday.
Today's readings speak of repentance and change, as signs of new beginnings. In the
first reading, when the people of Nineveh heard how Jonah announces that the city will
be destroyed, they drastically change their behavior and lives. The cries of those who
ask the Lord for help in the Psalm are responded to when he teaches his ways. The
second reading of Corinthians, talks about time running out. In Mark today Jesus
proclaims the Gospel to the people of Galilee: "this is the time of fulfillment the
kingdom of God is near repent and believe the gospel...”.
What we see in the first reading is not just about the salvation of a city, but the
credibility of a man in the promise of God. When we believe in the Lord we are able to
change not only our lives, our home but our society. What a miracle was done in Jonah's
life.
Now when we look at the definition of repentance: to turn from sin and pursue
amendment of life, things get more difficult. Why is it so difficult to change? Our mind
plays an important role, likewise our will. But ultimately it is not about what is written
on paper, or in kilos we want to loose, or the muscles you want to develop ... It's about
gaining eternal life.
Many of the New Year's resolutions are abandoned… they concern on the service of the
kingdom of God, or the good of others. It is so easy to get wrapped up in the values of
society which are concerned most of the time, about the appearance, financial wealth,
or being a celebrity. It is time to see the best of you, your family, and your friends with
big doses of humility. Celebrate the now, when the Lord gives you the opportunity to
make your will subject to His, you can love him and why not, feel loved, saved and
healed by Him.
Some of the things that I am sure and without resolutions is that we will have an
amazing day to celebrate the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd, presenting the
Divine Infant, followed by Our Mother Mary (Our Lady of the Clouds), our candidates
for confirmation, and our children younger than 12 years, who want to be blessed and
presented on the same day. We also will bless our candles.
From Colombia, beside my parents and family, I sent you my blessings.

LETTURA DEL GIORNO
CAMBIAMO LA NOSTRA VITA
Nella prima lettura di oggi, Giona,
mandato da Dio per avvisare il
popolo, si precipita per Nineve,
facendo impaurire i cittadini. Ha successo! Essi
Egli li
incita a cambiare direzione.
arrivato!” I futuri apostoli abbandonano le loro
reti e lo seguono. Cosi’ in tutte le letture udiamo
un invito ad un cambiamento radicale ed
immediato nella nostra vita.

READING OF THE DAY
CHANGE OUR LIVES
In today’s first reading, Jonah, sent
by God to warn the people, storms
through Nineveh, frightening the
citizens out of their wits. It works!
They repent before Jonah makes his way through a
third of the city, and God sees “by their actions”
how they have turned from evil.
Then we hear Paul telling the Corinthians that
“the world in its present form is passing away.” He
calls for a change of heart. He stops short of telling
them to set aside their everyday lives, but still he
urges them—rather mysteriously—to live as
though they aren’t doing the things they’re doing.
Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries,
“The kingdom of God is at hand!” The apostles-tobe abandon their nets and follow him. Thus in all
the readings we hear an invitation to a radical and
immediate change in our lives.
TODAY’S READINGS: First Reading: Jonah
3:1-5 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31
Gospel: Mark 1:14-20
The Ninevites heard the preaching of Jonah and
repented of their evil ways, thus experiencing the
Lord’s compassion. Do we repent when we hear
the preaching of Jesus? Do we invest our lives in
the world rather than in God’s kingdom?. From

Aunque no llega a

demostrando gratitud a nuestros benefactores.
siempre debemos mostrar gratitud a nuestros
No importa

Lent is a season for deep prayer and reflection focused
on the Paschal Mystery, penitence, and redemptive
suffering. In this two-hour class, we will explore
spiritual and prayer practices that enable us to
accompany Jesus to the cross and beyond. These
include journaling, the daily Examen, fasting, walking
the labyrinth, retreats, and forms of prayer and
meditation such as Lectio Divina, contemplative and
Centering Prayer, the rosary, and the Stations of the
Cross. This class stands alone or may serve as an
introduction to the six week class, "Lent with Mary,"
which begins Feb. 17/18.
