Reflecting on God’s Word
When the people of Nineveh repented, they showed it by
wearing sackcloth and fasting from food. Sometimes we
might think that way: That repenting means punishing
ourselves or feeling sorry. Jesus sees things differently.
He preached repentance that was a change of heart, a new
way of looking at things, a new way of acting. In the gospel
today, we see an example. The first people he calls to be disciples were fisherman. They would have considered their family,
their partners, and their boat as the most important things in
their lives. You need all of them to be a successful fisherman.
Yet the disciples don’t even hesitate when called by Jesus. They
leave behind their boats, their nets, even their father, to follow
Jesus. They don’t worry about what they will do, or look back at
what they are leaving behind. Now they are fishers of men.
Their “repentance” was more than just giving up sins. They were
beginning a new life and a new way of looking at the world.
Saint Paul refers to this as a new world. When he talks about not
using the world fully, he means not fully engaged in the world,
but looking to a better one, where God is more important than
any passing pleasure or pain. Is your marriage an example of
God’s love for your friends and relatives? When you are rejoicing, do you give thanks to God? When you are shopping, do you
buy what you really need, or what you think will make you happy? Jesus calls us all to this new way of living. With Jesus, we
can make a new world.
WHY DO WE SEND OUR CHILDREN TO A CATHOLIC
SCHOOL?
While Catholic schools cannot replace parents as the primary
religious educator, they can show our children that they belong
to a community whose love is at work in the world outside their
homes. Catholic schools perform an invaluable task, and give a
wider dimension to our children’s understanding of Christian
faith. They learn from experience that religion has to do with all
of life. It is not meant to be unpacked at certain times and is not
only a private and family matter.
When I try to define reasons for our positive feelings about
Catholic Schools all I can think of is the sense of belonging
(community) the feeling that kids are care for and the constant,
gentle determination to share with them, a quiet dependable
mystery at the center of which is love. We find this spirit in
OLGC School. This is our hope; that our children, will gain from
attending a Catholic School a lasting experience of the gentle,
reliable, mysterious love at work in the wider world outside
their homes. That is not something kids are likely to find in a
public School, no matter how good that School is in other ways.
Thus, I believe that what Catholic School children get is a more
complete education. For me, this is reason enough to send our
children to a Catholic School.
As we observe Catholic Schools Week, let us pray that the educational efforts of Catholic Schools embrace the twin purpose of
personal sanctification and social reform in the light of Christian values.
Thank you to all of the parishioners who actively support Catholic Schools. It is with your spiritual and financial support that
we continue to thrive. May God continue to bless all of you.

A veces podemos
a Jesús.

cercano a Dios
Vocations Corner by Rev. Keith Romke
God’s Choice (Not Yours!)
Sometimes I hear young men and young women tell me that they are extremely open to a religious vocation, but in the next breath
they say that they’re pretty sure that they would never be able to be a priest or a nun because they aren’t good enough or holy enough.
When I hear this I immediately say “Guess what? I’m not good enough to be a priest either . . . but I am one by the grace of God.”
The bottom line is that there isn’t a single person in this world that’s even deserving of communicating with God, and yet He longs for
us to pray and to delve into a deep relationship with Him. Everything that we do that is God-Related (which He wants a lot of!) is only
made possible because God wills is and longs for it! HE makes everything possible for us by His gift of grace. This should give us all
hope, because it means that IF He is calling us to a religious vocation, then HE will provide all that we need to make it happen, which
means that we should have NO worries whatsoever about not being good enough. You don’t get to decide that, God does! So open up
your hearts to pray and ask Him where He is calling, regardless of whether or not you feel worthy enough or good enough. God doesn’t
call the qualified, He qualifies those whom He calls!

“Pope Francis has seen a deeper link between the poor and the

society,’ an attitude that sees people as disposable when they do
not serve the selfish interests of those with more power.”
( “Poverty and Abortion: A Vicious Cycle” )

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus says: “Come after me, and I will
make you fishers of men.” As disciples, we are called to continue

gospel values.

faithful contributors, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able
to assist eight families, providing $2,119.85 for utility, rent and
other bills. May God Bless You!
