A note from Fr. Brian
Last Sunday we celebrated the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, and with it we marked the end of the Christmas
season. Once Jesus was baptized, he began his years of ministry and service, and so celebrating the feast of his
baptism is a nice, convenient symbol for us that his childhood years (the days of Christmas) are over.
Now we are in what the Church calls Ordinary Time, so let me share a few words about what it means to be
“ordinary.” On the one hand, the term doesn’t mean that this season is boring or unimportant. Rather, the word
“ordinary” means that the Sundays of this part of the year follow a particular order. This Sunday, for example, is
designated simply as the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, but it is “ordinary” only in the sense that one week
follows after another.
Of course, just like the rest of our lives, the Church year includes certain times for celebrating. Easter and Christmas take
precedence as the greatest feasts we celebrate, and each one requires several weeks to celebrate properly. The seasons of Lent and
Advent are important, because they give us time to prepare well for the celebrations of Easter and Christmas. But the rest of the year
is important too: without “ordinary” time, we wouldn’t notice how great these wonderful celebrations are. If every day were a feast
day, then no feast day would seem special. Ordinary Time helps us remember that God works in our lives all the time, not just a
little bit here and there.
Nevertheless, we do continue to celebrate during Ordinary Time, and we do so on Sunday, the day that has been passed down to us
for 2000 years as the day when Jesus rose from the dead. Each Sunday is a mini-Easter, and what better way to celebrate than by
coming to Mass!
Many people will have the day off from work or school this Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Our parish
office will be closed as well. But this entire week we join with Christians all over the world in a celebration that is not as well
known, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. From Sunday, January 18, through Sunday, January 25, we are invited to work
alongside members of other Christian denominations to demonstrate how much we already have in common, and to pray for even
greater unity in the future. In these ways we recall the wish Jesus expressed at the Last Supper, “that they all may be one” (John
17:21), and try to make that wish a reality.
May we all be one!

Passion Stirred by the Spirit: A Labyrinth Adventure
Tammy Ichinotsubo-Ezzi, PhD
“The glory of God is the human person fully alive...the life of the
human person is the vision of God.”«-St. Irenaeus.
When was the last time you felt really alive and truly you? Are
you living life passionately, fully present, as an expression of
the Spirit of God moving and flowing in and through you? Walk
the Labyrinth with us and discover, or rediscover what enlivens
you and how the Spirit might leading you to manifest your
passion in the world. Used at one time in medieval cathedrals
as a symbolic pilgrimage to the Holy Land, the Labyrinth
continues to serve as a means of pilgrimage, but now to a place
of interior openness to be able to encounter God directly. In this
encounter, we can know God more intimately, know ourselves
more fully, and know our passion as the Spirit’s movement
within us more clearly.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL WEEK - January 25 - January 30
Dear Parents/Guardians:
The theme for the National School Week is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knoweldge and Service.” The
annual observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2015 is January 25-31. Schools typically celebrate
Catholic School Week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community at large.
The theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of the Catholic education. First, schools are communities small families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of home, church, city and nation. Faith, knowledge and
service are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should be judged.
The new logo features a swirl of colors interacting around a cross, which is at the center of all Catholic education. The
vibrancy on the colors and the movement and shadows in the logo that are present in our Catholic schools.
