D
espués de haber entrado en 2015, el futuro para
Fuerteventura parece muy prometedor. Este optimismo
está respaldado por la noción sobre el establecimiento de
un nuevo récord en cuanto al número de turistas del año
pasado. Con más de 2,5 millones de personas llegando por avión y barco, esta
asombrosa cifra marca el 2014 como el año más exitoso de la isla en su historia.
Con un aumento del 15,1% sobre 2013, el crecimiento del turismo se percibió en
toda la economía isleña.
De cara al futuro, y teniendo en cuenta el año que tenemos por delante, el objetivo
parece ser consolidar esta posición positiva. Con un considerable incremento
en el presupuesto destinado a invertir en la promoción de la isla en el extranjero,
así como los proyectados aumentos en todos nuestros sectores primordiales del
mercado europeo, podría ser que se lograse una nueva cifra histórica antes de
finales de este año.

aving entered 2015, the future appears particularly
promising for Fuerteventura. This optimism is
backed by the knowledge that a new record
was set, in terms of visitor numbers, in the year
just passed. With over 2.5 million people arriving by air and sea, this
staggering number marks 2014 as the island’s most successful year
ever. In what was a 15.1% increase from 2013, the growth in tourism
was felt throughout the local economy.
Moving forward and considering the year that lies ahead, the aim
appears to be to consolidate upon this positive position. With a
dramatically increased budget to spend on promoting the island abroad
and projected increases to all our key European market sectors, it could
be that a new landmark figure will be achieved before the end of the
year.

na gran bienvenida a nuestra primera edición de 2015!

Esperamos que nuestros lectores hayan pasado una
buena navidad, fin de año y Reyes. Una vez más, se trató de un
momento realmente mágico observándose una variedad de distintas
costumbres y tradiciones. Fue agradable ver los centros turísticos
de la isla congestionados, lo que en sí mismo aporta dinamismo y
vivacidad a los procedimientos. Estos sin duda se extendieron a las celebraciones de
fin de año, con una gran explosión de fuegos artificiales dando la bienvenida al 2015.

Aquí en la isla, nuestra economía funciona de manera muy diferente a los principales
países europeos, ya que todo es impulsado por el turismo. En consecuencia, resulta
especialmente agradable contemplar el logro de nuevos registros, ya que más de 2,5
millones de turistas eligieron Fuerteventura en 2014.

dar a las empresas la confianza para crear puestos de trabajo contratando a los
desempleados. A pesar del optimismo generalmente presente entre los residentes, el
número de personas sin trabajo sigue siendo preocupantemente alto. Mientras que
los funcionarios responsables de este hito deben ser aplaudidos, es vital que éstos
se concentren en seguir llevándoles hacia adelante. Con las elecciones previstas en
mayo, Fuertextra espera que se centren en las necesidades de Fuerteventura y no
en sus propias ambiciones políticas.
e cara a las elecciones, existen muchos rumores acerca de que con probabilidad
habrá muchos cambios delante. Si bien ello puede desencadenar un poco de
incertidumbre, el cambio puede ser positivo y muchos creen que una nueva vista
sobre los acontecimientos será beneficioso para el futuro de la isla. En Fuertextra
creemos que la importancia del turismo para la economía de la isla no puede
ser exagerada. Nuestros políticos deben invertir en nuestros centros turísticos y
garantizar que la calidad de nuestra oferta se mantenga. Es una fórmula simple, a
mayor número de visitantes mayores ingresos, impuestos y creación de empleo. Se
dispondrá de dinero para mejorar la infraestructura de la isla y los servicios públicos.
Esperamos que esto sea entendido por aquellos que persiguen sus sueños políticos
y lo pongan en práctica cuando alcancen el poder.

hope all our readers had
an enjoyable Christmas,
New Year and Reyes. Once again it was a truly
magical time as a variety of different customs and traditions were observed. It was
pleasing to see the island’s tourist resorts full to capacity, which in itself brings a
vibrancy and liveliness to proceedings. These definitely spilled over into New Year
celebrations with fireworks bringing in 2015 with a bang.

point. After the financial crisis, it has been a difficult 5 year period, but last year
marked the end of the financial doldrums at least for Fuerteventura. Here on the
island, our economy works in a very different fashion to major European countries,
as everything is driven by tourism. Consequently, it was especially pleasing to see
records tumble, as over 2.5 million chose to visit Fuerteventura in 2014.

the future. With regards to tourism, predictions are suggesting 2015 promises
to be another bumper year for Fuerteventura. This should provide the impetus to
drive the local economy forward and give businesses the confidence to create
jobs for the unemployed. Despite the optimism generally present among residents,
the number of people without work is still worryingly high. Although the officials
responsible for the progress should be applauded, it is vital they concentrate on
continuing to drive us forward. With an election due in May, Fuertextra hopes they
focus on the needs of Fuerteventura and not their own political ambitions.
ooking ahead to the election, the rumours suggest there are likely to be many

changes ahead. Whilst this may bring a little uncertainty, change can be positive
and many feel a fresh take upon events will prove beneficial to the island’s future. At
Fuertextra we believe the importance of tourism on the island’s economy cannot be
overstated. Our politicians must invest in our tourist resorts and ensure the quality
of our offering is maintained. It is a simple formula, but greater visitor numbers
increase revenues, tax and job creation. Money is then available to improve the
island’s infrastructure and public services. Hopefully those chasing political dreams
will demonstrate they understand this and put it into practice when they come to
office.

en 35 ferias nacionales e internacionales. Ello incluirá eventos

by the European Union. This project was listed in a report
criticising schemes funded in Spain using European taxpayer’s
money. The European Court of Auditors was critical of the 56
million euros spent on extending Fuerteventura´s airport. They
believe it won´t be

built and successful airport. He added that the airport prior to its revamp would
have been unable to handle the record number of visitors recorded in 2013 and

PLAYA CHICA
L
as obras destinadas a ampliar Playa Chica en Puerto del
Rosario se completarán antes de finales de mayo. Esto
asegurará que los residentes capitalinos puedan disfrutar de los
beneficios durante los meses más calurosos del verano. Con
un presupuesto de 850.000€, el proyecto tiene como objetivo
ampliar la playa 400 metros por el lado de la bahía cubierto de piedras y rocas.
Los fondos para el proyecto provienen de la
Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas y se espera
que el trabajo comience a finales de enero.

ork aimed at extending the Playa Chica beach in Puerto del
Rosario will be completed before the end of May. This will
ensure the capital´s residents will be able to enjoy the benefits
during the hot summer months. With an 850,000 euro budget,
the project aims to extend the beach by 400 metres at the side
of the bay that is currently covered in stones and rocks. Funding for the project
is from the Las Palmas port authorities and
work is expected to start towards the end of
January.

Puerto del Rosario, Marcial Morales dijo de los
planes, “ Se trata de una obra muy sencilla, que
consiste básicamente en construir un espigón
y poner arena en el litoral.” Los residentes se
beneficiarán durante los meses de verano,
asimismo los pasajeros de cruceros también
podrán disfrutar de la playa renovada durante
los meses de invierno.

from the bay and deposited onto the current
beach, as well as covering the rocks to
enlarge the beach. The Mayor of Puerto del

“This is a very simple job, which is basically
to build a breakwater and add sand to the
shoreline.” Whilst residents will benefit

documento de póliza para el crecimiento futuro de la isla.
Ha sido objeto de debate desde hace varios años, siendo
ya provisionalmente aprobado dicho documento por el
Cabildo. Una serie de charlas, exposiciones y reuniones
se han celebrado en la isla durante el último mes. Ello ha
sido con el fin de elevar la conciencia pública sobre el plan
y explicar el impacto que tendrá en la isla. Las consultas
más frecuentes hacen referencia a ampliar la capacidad
de realizar invernaderos en suelos productivos, suelos con
capacidad de acogida de energías renovables y definición
de conceptos relativos al sector primario. La exposición
permanente con la asistencia de los técnicos de la
Consejería continuará hasta el 20 de enero de 2015 (calle Lucha canaria, 112.
Puerto del Rosario) y en la web del Cabildo www.cabildofuer.es.

It has been under discussion for a number of years, with
a draft document provisionally approved by the Cabildo. A
number of talks, expositions and meetings have been held
around the island within the last month. This was with a
view to raising public awareness of the plan and explaining
the impact it will have on the island. Included in the PIOF
were details of proposed increases relating to the amount
of land allocated for agricultural purposes, land dedicated
to renewable energies and the definition of concepts

l proyecto para crear una terminal de pasajeros en
el puerto de Gran Tarajal ha avanzado a la fase
de licitación. Con un presupuesto de 385.000€, el
objetivo es la construcción de una nueva terminal con
el fin de proporcionar mejores servicios en el puerto.
Esto servirá para atraer cruceros a la zona, así como
a otros turistas náuticos. Las empresas que compiten
por el contrato tienen hasta finales de enero para
presentar sus propuestas. Se espera que el trabajo
disponga de unos 6 meses para ser completado una
vez se ponga en marcha. Su ubicación se encuentra
a medio camino entre la rotonda de la entrada al
puerto y el muelle, donde actualmente atracan los
barcos y cruceros más grandes.

he project to create a passenger terminal in
the Gran Tarajal harbour has moved forward
to the tendering stage. With an estimated value
of 385,000 euros, the aim is to construct a new
terminal in order to provide improved services
at the port. This will serve to attract cruise ships
to the area, as well as other nautical tourists.
Companies bidding for the contract have until the
end of January to submit their proposals. Work
is expected to take around 6 months to complete
once underway. The site for this is located halfway
between the roundabout at the entrance to the port
and pier, where larger ships and ferries currently
dock.

clipses, comets and meteor showers are some of the phenomena
stargazers will be able to view during the year ahead. The night skies in
Fuerteventura provide perfect conditions as the clarity of skies are among
the best in Europe. As the islands are near the equator, but far
from tropical storms, it is possible to observe the entire northern
hemisphere. Whilst there are renowned observatories in both
Tenerife and La Palma, you can still see an amazing amount with
the naked eye and this year there are several special astrological
events taking place.

he first British Airways plane to fly to
Fuerteventura touched down before
Christmas. With flights scheduled on a
Saturday and Wednesday, the inaugural
flight was greeted with much fan fare, with
passengers given information packs and
invited to partake in a slice of cake! The
honours of cutting the cake fell to BA pilot
Ian Irwing, who showed he was just as deft
handling a knife as he was the controls of the
Airbus 319. Normally however, an Airbus 320
will be used for the route.

TALL SHIPS

ollowing on from our article in last month’s edition, we are sad to report that
only one of the three expected tall ships were able to dock in Gran Tarajal.
The bad weather, which included particularly strong winds, also caused ferry
crossings to be disrupted between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. However, the
Alexander Von Humboldt II did successfully make the journey. This
was just as well, as onboard were three very important passengers,
namely Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar! With hundreds of excited
children turning up to greet the Three Kings from the Orient, they
arrived in a knick of time to receive a multitude of wishes and letters,
the night before Reyes.

nfortunately, the Roald Amundsen and Tenacious were both
unable to make the trip due to the conditions. Visitors to Gran
Tarajal were invited to board the German tall ship, which was
manufactured in 2011 to replace the original Alexander Von Humboldt,
which was built in 1906. The replica is 65.5 metres in length and is
able to carry 79 passengers and travel at a maximum sailing speed
of 14 knots. Today,
she is used as a
practical training tool
for those who want
to learn to sail, aged
between 14 and 75.

or lo general, un incidente de carácter odontológico no es particularmente
de interés periodístico, aunque es un gran problema para el paciente.
Sin embargo, esta historia en particular
cubre un procedimiento que ciertamente no
es convencional, ¡dado que el paciente en
cuestión era un hipopótamo! Normalmente se
encuentra felizmente revolcándose en su recinto
en el zoo de La Lajita, pero esta vez uno de
los hipopótamos del establecimiento requirió
tratamiento para dos dientes delanteros.

ue necesaria una operación puesto que los
dientes del hipopótamo llegaron a ser tan
largos que habían atravesado su labio superior
causándole malestar. No obstante, debido al
tamaño y peso del animal y la necesidad de
administrarle anestesia, los especialistas de dos
de los mejores parques zoológicos de Francia
vinieron a la isla a realizar la operación. Todo
salió con éxito y el hipopótamo, que tiene el
apropiado nombre de “Hipo”, regresó sano y a
salvo a su recinto sabana.
VISIT TO THE DENTIST

dentistry incident is generally not particularly newsworthy, albeit we accept it is a big deal for the unlucky patient! However, this particular story
covers a procedure that was certainly not
of a conventional nature, given that the
patient concerned was a Hippopotamus!
Normally found happily wallowing in his
enclosure in the La Lajita zoo, one of the
establishment’s hippos required treatment
to two front teeth.
A
n operation was required after the hippo’s teeth had become so long they
had pierced his upper lip and were causing
him discomfort. However, due to the size
and weight of the animal and the need to
administer anaesthesia, specialists from
two of France´s top zoos were flown in
especially to perform the operation. This
was administered successfully and the
hippo, who is appropriately named “Hipo”,
was safely returned to his savannah

ahora no ha tenido éxito en sus intentos por encontrar petróleo bajo las
aguas adyacentes a Fuerteventura y Lanzarote. De hecho, incluso se ha
sugerido que cuando esta edición de Fuertextra salga a la calle, su buque
de exploración será reubicado en el Golfo de Guinea o Angola para iniciar
investigaciones frente a la costa africana. Como tal, ello puede poner fin a la
presencia de “Rowan Renaissance” en aguas
canarias, donde ha operado desde el pasado
mes de noviembre. Si bien su misión parece no
haber tenido éxito, su presencia no ha sido sin
incidentes, pues activistas de Greenpeace tuvieron
un enfrentamiento con la Armada española,
creándose así un contratiempo en los medios de
comunicación internacionales.

t has been reported within the Canarian media that Repsol have so far been
unsuccessful in their attempts to find oil beneath the waters adjacent to
Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Indeed, it has even been suggested that as this
edition of Fuertextra hits the streets, their exploration vessel will be relocated
to the Guinea Gulf or Angola to start investigatory works off the African coast.
As such this may bring to an end the presence of the “Rowan Renaissance” in
Canarian waters, where it has operated
since last November. Whilst its mission
appears to have been unsuccessful,
its journey was not without incident, as
Green Peace activists clashed with the
Spanish Navy, creating an international
media incident.

or those who missed our report on
this incident, Greenpeace activists
approached the Rowan Renaissance,
with a view to disrupting its work.
Attempting to intercept their dingy, the
Spanish navy collided with it, leading to
a female Italian member being thrown
overboard and sustaining a gashed leg
in the process. A dramatic sea rescue
entailed and thereafter she was flown by
helicopter to hospital in Gran Canaria.
The actions of the Navy were defended
by the Spanish Government in Madrid
despite protestations about the level
of aggression involved. Government
officials stated the navy were acting
lawfully in conjunction with international
conventions. Greenpeace described this
stance as “lamentable” and believed the
state was supporting “violent actions”.

interrumpir su trabajo. En el intento de interceptar
su barquito, la armada española chocó contra éste,
conllevando a que una mujer italiana cayese por la
borda, recibiendo en el acto un corte en su pierna.
Ello implicó un dramático rescate en el mar antes
de ser trasladada en helicóptero al hospital de
Gran Canaria. Las acciones de la armada fueron
defendidas por el Gobierno español en Madrid a
pesar de las protestas sobre el nivel de agresión en
cuestión. Los funcionarios del gobierno declararon
que la armada actuó legalmente en relación con
los convenios internacionales. Greenpeace calificó
esta actitud como “lamentable” y señaló que el
estado apoya las “acciones violentas”.

olviendo al tema de la perforación exploratoria,
se hicieron agujeros a una profundidad de 3170
metros en el pozo de Sandia. A pesar de que los
resultados oficiales de las muestras no se harán
públicos hasta finales de enero, se ha informado
ampliamente que económicamente no es viable
extraer petróleo en dicha zona. Por su parte, el
precio mínimo en cinco años del petróleo también
ha sido citado como otro factor en la decisión de
Repsol.

n esencia, parece que la empresa se ha
encontrado con muchas dificultades durante
el último par de meses, viendo su labor más
“complicada” de lo que se creía inicialmente. La perforación ha avanzado
lentamente a 110 metros por día, debido a la profundidad de los fondos
marinos. La actividad que tendrá lugar en el denominado pozo Sandía, cesará
el 12 de enero. Sobre el 20 de enero el pozo se tapara.

n noticias de Respol parece que se han producido infructuosos esfuerzos,
después de que Mario Cabrera, Presidente del Cabildo de Fuerteventura,
hiciese un llamamiento diciendo “Repsol debe recoger ya y mandarse a mudar
lejos de Canarias” antes de Navidad. Ciertamente, la decisión del Gobierno
español al permitir el proyecto de Repsol, se ha encontrado con la resistencia
estoica de los políticos en las islas, así como de los grupos ecologistas.
Los residentes también han demostrado constantemente su insatisfacción,
celebrándose la última inquietud pública recientemente en Corralejo. Así,
aproximadamente unos 50 surfistas se congregaron con sus tablas en la Playa
Chica del pueblo con el fin de instar el cese de la perforación.

site. Whilst official results of the samples
won´t be made public until the end of
January, it has been widely reported that
it may not be financially viable to extract
oil from this site. The five year low in oil
prices has been cited as another factor
in Repsol’s decision.
I
n essence, it appears the company encountered many difficulties during the
last couple of months, as work was found to be more “complicated” than was
initially believed. Drilling has advanced slowly at 110 metres per day, due to
the depth of the seabed. The activity taking place at what is named the Sandía
well, will cease on January 12. Shortly after, it will be sealed, with this expected
to take place on January 20.

ews of Respol´s unsuccessful efforts came after Mario Cabrera, President
of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, appealed to the company to “Pack up
now and move far away from the Canaries” before Christmas. Certainly the
Spanish Government’s decision to allow the Repsol project has been met with
stoic resistance from local politicians, as well as environmental groups. Local
residents have constantly demonstrated their dissatisfaction, with the latest
display of public unrest held recently in Corralejo. This saw around 50 surfers
congregate with their boards and wetsuits on the small beach in the town to
urge for a cessation of the drilling.

A
s the pound continues to strengthen against the euro, research has revealed the Canary
Islands represent some of the best bargains for
British holidaymakers seeking winter sun. In what is
traditionally a busy time for the UK holiday industry,
as many try to beat the winter blues after the festive
season, the stronger pound is making the islands an
even more attractive proposition. With UK tourists
visiting the Canaries currently receiving an extra 10%
for their money than a year ago, it certainly ensures
they have more to spend in their chosen resort.
Andrew Brown of the Post Office Travel Money said
the islands “are unbeatable on price” but did warn
there was also great value to be had in the Red Sea
resort of Sharm el-Sheikh and further afield in Mexico
and Jamaica.
TAX SCRAPPED
I
n another boost for tourism, the UK
Chancellor has announced that the air
passenger duty (APD) for children under
12 years of age will be scrapped by May
2015. This will ensure cheaper flights for
families holidaying abroad. The travel
industry as a whole has welcomed the
decision, but would like to see the tax
scrapped for adults as well. Mr Osborne,
the UK Chancellor, also announced that
by 2016 the tax would be abolished for all
under 16´s as he wanted to “Reduce the
cost of tickets for families directly”. Under
other measures due to be implemented,
airlines will be forced to display their
fuel surcharges as a separate item
on airfares, to ensure that drops in oil
policies are passed on to customers.

i bien no tenemos información específica para Fuerteventura, hemos sido
capaces de descubrir que en los últimos tres años en el conjunto de las
Islas Canarias, se han recaudado unos 21,5 millones de euros en concepto
de multas por exceso de velocidad. Esto ha contribuido a un total recaudado
de 508 millones en el conjunto de España desde octubre del 2011 a octubre
del 2014. Encabezando la lista por provincias se sitúa Madrid (39,5 millones),
seguida por Sevilla (28,1 millones), La Coruña (26,4 millones), Málaga (23,9
millones) y Valencia (21,7 millones). La lista pone de manifiesto que las Islas
Canarias no están ubicadas en la media de otras zonas turísticas como
Baleares, recaudando sólo 6,2 millones en multas.

a habido un amplio debate en los últimos meses sobre el número de
multas de tráfico emitidas en Fuerteventura. Debido a notable incremento
de los radares de velocidad en la isla, un gran número de conductores han
sido víctimas de este tipo de multas. De hecho, tal ha sido el descontento de
los residentes, que muchos han usado las redes sociales para advertir a otros
conductores de dónde se encuentran las trampas.

enerife has featured in the Wall Street Journal´s portfolio of pictures of the
year for 2014. A photograph of the moon was taken at the foot of Mount
Teide by Daniel López. What makes it particularly striking is that it depicts the
“supermoon”, which occurred during August. At this time, the moon reached
its closet point to earth during orbit and shone 30% more brightly than usual.
As a result of this, it appeared significantly larger than is normal. Having made
headlines in Spain, the photo was chosen by the Wall Street Journal for its
annual album, which takes a monthly photographic look back at the key points
of the year.

here has been widespread debate in recent months about the number of
traffic fines being issued in Fuerteventura. With a noticeable increase in
speed traps around the island, it seems many drivers have been caught out by
the radars and in the process, received fines. Indeed, such has been the unrest
amongst the local population, that many residents have taken to social media
networks to warn other drivers where traps are located.
hilst we have no specific information for Fuerteventura, we have been
able to discover that in the last three years in the whole of the Canary

Canary Islands are not placed in the middle of the table with other tourist
regions such as the Balearics, where the much lower amount of 6.2 million
euros of fines has been issued.
he small island of La Gomera has been declared by ABTA as a “must visit”
for 2015. ABTA is the UK travel trade association for tour operators and
travel agents and included the island in their “Destinations
to Watch” for British tourists in 2015. The list compiles
a mixture of long and short haul destinations, which the
group expect will capture the public´s imagination in the
forthcoming year. Top of the pile was Austria, followed by
Botswana and Cuba, with La Gomera ranked in 7th place.

he ABTA report identified the Canary Islands as a
preferred destination for the British, especially during
the winter months, as many seek winter sunshine. Whilst
the Canary Islands have traditionally been marketed as a
sun, sea and sand destination, it is interesting to see that
they are also starting to be recognised for more than just
that. La Gomera in particular boasts the Garajonay National Park which has
been protected as an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1986. In addition,
the island boasts a comprehensive network of walking paths, with small rural
houses and hotels for those looking for a quieter break.

2014 -A final “Fuerte” look!
2014 resultó ser unos 12 meses llenos de acontecimientos
en la isla. Como siempre, Fuertextra se esforzó
por lograr la cobertura de las historias más
importantes, en lugar de simplemente informar
sobre las noticias. Puesto que 2015 ya está en
marcha, tomamos una última mirada a algunos de
los aspectos más destacados de los que hemos
tenido el placer de informarles durante el último
año.
Enero
Nuestro reportaje principal se centró en el presupuesto
asignado al Cabildo por el año. Situado en 71,6€ millones,
se representó un incremento de 11.5%, con el dinero extra
destinado a mejoras en la infraestructura de la isla.
Por otra parte, Gran Tarajal celebró el primer atraque de
un crucero en su puerto, y la aerolínea Jet2 anunció un
aumento de vuelos, debido al consumo positivo de rutas
iniciales.
Febrero
Justo después de terminar el rodaje de “Exodus”
en la isla, surgieron informes de que Terry
Gilliam estaba mirando la viabilidad de grabar su
película “El hombre que mató a Don Quijote”, en
Fuerteventura.
Después de una visita del Director General de
Carreteras de Canarias, se anunció que el tramo
norte de la autopista podría abrir en enero 2015.
¿Excesivamente optimista? Parece que sí, porque
más adelante en el año se nos informó sobre su retraso
hasta el 2017.
Marzo
“Bonanza” se refirió a la cifra récord de visitantes que se
esperaba que visitase nuestra isla durante la temporada
de verano. Las predicciones apoyaron la opinión
de hace tiempo acerca de que 2014 podría
alcanzar un punto histórico en el turismo para
Fuerteventura, rompiendo todos los récords del
número de visitantes. Ello resultó ser el caso,
rompiéndose el hito (como se informa en la
edición de este mes) ya que la isla recibió más de
2,5 millones de visitantes durante 2014.
Abril
Hubo progreso al informar sobre los ambiciosos
planes destinados a reformar los puertos del norte y
sur de la isla. Y especialmente emocionante, fue la
noticia de que el grupo de Puerto Calero Marino SL
se había comprometido a gastar 12€ millones en la
remodelación del puerto de Morro Jable. Este iba a ser
transformado en un puerto deportivo de lujo antes del
verano de 2015.
Un avión inaugural de Jet2 llegó desde el Reino Unido,
marcando el inicio de una exitosa primera temporada para
la compañía al operar con la isla.
Mayo
Reportamos sobre la prórroga del régimen financiero disponible para las
líneas aéreas que vuelan a las Islas Canarias, lo que representa un gran
impulso para la industria del turismo.
2014 proved to be a particularly eventful 12 months for the island. As
always, Fuertextra endeavoured to bring you inside coverage of the
major stories, rather than simply reporting the news alone. With 2015
already underway, we take a final look back at some of the highlights it
has been our pleasure to report to you during the last year.
January
Our lead story focused on the forthcoming year´s budget allocated to the
island’s Cabildo for the year. Set at 71.6 million euros, it represented an
increase of 11.5%, with the extra money set aside for
improvements to the island’s infrastructure.
Elsewhere, Gran Tarajal celebrated the first
cruise ship to dock at its harbour and airline Jet2
announced an increase in flights, due to the positive
uptake of initial routes.
February
Hot on the heels of Hollywood blockbuster “Exodus”
being filmed on the island, reports surfaced that Terry
Gilliam was looking at the feasibility of filming “The Man
Who Killed Don Quixote” in Fuerteventura.
After a visit by the Director General of Roads for the
Canary Islands it was also announced the northern
stretch of the motorway could open in January 2015.
Wishful thinking? Quite so, for later in the year we
reported on its delay until 2017!
March
“Bonanza” referred to the record number of
visitors expected to visit our shores during the
summer season. The predictions supported
the long standing view that 2014 could
become a historic point in Fuerteventura´s
touristic history, by breaking all-time records for
visitor numbers. This turned out to be the case,
with the landmark broken (as reported in this
month’s edition) as the island welcomed more
the 2.5 million visitors during 2014.
April
There was progress to report on ambitious plans
to overhaul harbours at the north and south of
the island. Particularly exciting was news that the
Puerto Calero Marino SL group had committed
to spending 12 million euros into refurbishing
the Morro Jable harbour. This was to be
transformed into a super yacht marina by the
summer of 2015.
The inaugural Jet2 plane arrived from the UK,
signalling the start of a successful first season for
the company in operating with the island.
May
News broke regarding the extension of the financial
scheme available to airlines flying to the Canary
Islands, representing a huge boost for the tourism
industry.
We featured an in-depth review of Feaga, the largest
agricultural fair to take place in the Canary Islands, as
well as previewing the Artisan Fair in Antigua.

Junio
Finalmente parece ser que había un “avance” para motivar al
Gobierno de Canarias a estudiar la legalidad de las propiedades
vacacionales. Después de un intenso cabildeo y la presentación
de una fuerte petición de 19.000 firmas, el gobierno anunció
que estudiaría la introducción de legislación para regular esta
industria. Con un valor estimado de 1 millones de euros al año
destinado a la economía canaria, los resultados de su deliberación
se esperan con ansiedad.
Julio
“En demanda” hacía hincapié a las Islas Canarias como un punto
para los ejecutivos de televisión y películas con el fin de grabar una
variedad de programas y películas. Se incluye así “Wild Oats” en
Gran Canaria”, “Dr. Who” en Lanzarote, además de dos series de
televisión españolas en Fuerteventura.
Mientras tanto, el Tribunal Supremo en España rechazaba un
recurso legal presentado contra la búsqueda de petróleo y gas
por Repsol en las aguas cercanas a la costa de Fuerteventura.
Agosto
Con la inminente apertura del parque tecnológico de
Fuerteventura, Fuertextra supo que zero2infinity estaba estudiando
la posibilidad de utilizar las instalaciones. La empresa se basa en
los viajes espaciales comerciales y firmó un acuerdo preliminar para
usar el parque.
Por otros lugares, hubo mucha frustración sobre la asignación
de fondos en el Municipio de Antigua, ya que sólo 12.000€ fueron
asignados a Caleta de Fuste de un presupuesto total de 3 millones.
Septiembre
A raíz de nuestra edición de marzo, felizmente confirmamos que las
predicciones de ocupación de verano eran correctas. Después de un
gran aumento en el número de vuelos que aterrizaron durante julio y
agosto, Fuerteventura ha disfrutado uno de los veranos más ocupados
en su historia.
Octubre
Primeramente debiendo abrir en enero del 2015, fue de
poca sorpresa el retraso de la apertura de la autopista en
el norte de la isla. Un déficit de 17 millones de euros en
financiación vio la finalización del proyecto aplazado hasta
2017, como muy pronto.
Por el contrario, informamos que el trabajo del nuevo
servicio de urgencias en el hospital de la isla estaba en curso
para terminar en la fecha prevista. ¡Este ya está funcionando!
Noviembre
¡Una de nuestras portadas favoritas del año, además de una
buena noticia! Y es que se anunciaba, después de la World
Travel Market en Londres, que el mercado turístico británico
para Fuerteventura crecería un 28% en 2015. Reuniéndose con
representantes clave de la industria de viajes, los funcionarios de
Fuerteventura confirmaron aumentos en el número de conexiones
y la frecuencia de vuelos no sólo del Reino Unido, sino de Irlanda
también.
Diciembre
Finalmente, después de un año de anticipación, Exodus llegó a la
pantalla grande en los cines de todo el mundo. Aunque recibió críticas
mixtas, la película tuvo particular relevancia para Fuerteventura, dado
que gran parte de la acción se rodó aquí.
También fue el mes en que la búsqueda de petróleo finalmente
comenzó, después de meses de protestas públicas. Ello no sucedió
sin su propio drama, pues activistas de Green Peace y la armada
española se enfrentaron.

June
Finally there appeared to be a “Breakthrough” in motivating the
Canarian Government to re-address the legality of holiday rentals.
After intensive lobbying and the presentation of a 19,000 strong
petition, the government announced it would look at introducing
legislation to regulate this industry. With an estimated value of 1
billion euros a year to the Canarian economy, the results of their
deliberations are eagerly awaited.
July
“In demand” related to the Canary Islands becoming
a hot spot for Television and movie executives to
produce a variety of programmes and films. These
included filming of “Wild Oats” in Gran Canaria, “Dr
Who” in Lanzarote, as well as two Spanish television
series in Fuerteventura.
Meanwhile, a legal challenge filed against Repsol´s
search for oil and gas in waters close to the
Fuerteventura coastline was rejected by Spain´s
Supreme Court.
August
With the impending opening of Fuerteventura’s
technological park, Fuertextra learned zero2infinity
were studying the feasibility of using the facilities. The
company deals in commercial space travel and signed a
preliminary agreement to establish a base at the state of
the art institution.
Elsewhere, there was much frustration over the allocation
of funds in the Antigua County, which saw just 12,000
euros designated to Caleta de Fuste out of a 3 million
budget.
September
Following on from our March edition, we were
happy to confirm the predicted bumper summer
had indeed ensued. After a huge increase in the
number of flights touching down during July and
August, Fuerteventura had enjoyed one of the busiest
summers in its history.
October
Originally due to open in January 2015, it was of little
surprise when the opening of the motorway in the north
of the island was delayed. A shortfall of 17 million euros
in funding saw the completion of the project deferred until
2017, at the earliest.
By contrast, we were able to report that the proposed
opening of the new emergency department in the island’s
hospital was on schedule. This is now fully operational.
November
One of our favourite covers of the year and a good
news story to boot! For it was announced after the
World Travel Market in London, that the British tourism
market to Fuerteventura was expected to grow by 28%
in 2015. Meeting with key representatives of the travel
industry, Fuerteventura’s officials confirmed increases in
the number of connections and frequency of flights from
not only the UK, but Ireland as well.
December
Finally, after a year of anticipation, Exodus hit the big
screen in Cinema´s around the world! Whilst it has received
mixed reviews, the film was of particular relevance to
Fuerteventura, given that much of the recording for the movie
took place here!
It was also the month when drilling for oil finally commenced,
after months of public outcry. This was not without its own
drama, as Green Peace activists and the Spanish navy
clashed.

on el estreno de “Exodus:
Dioses y Reyes” en
marcha, Fuertextra
hizo una salida al cine
para verla en la pantalla grande.
Hasta ahora, el desarrollo
de la película aún no se ha
completado, así Japón será el
último país donde se estrene la
peli, el 30 de enero. Sin embargo,
después de haber estado en
España, Irlanda y el Reino Unido
durante varias semanas, muchos
de nuestros lectores han tenido la
oportunidad de ver la película.
Exodus no ha sido especialmente
bien recibida por las críticas, sin
embargo después de haberla
visto de primera mano, ello
es difícil de entender.
Para nosotros,
las 2 horas y 22
minutos pasaron
rápidamente, con
un guion avanzando a buen ritmo.
Es justo decir que estamos un poco
sesgados, ya que muchas de las
escenas que incluyen los aspectos
más destacados, fueron rodadas en
Fuerteventura. Dejando esto a un
lado, el relato de como se desarrolla
la historia nos pareció emocionante,
con la tensión aumentando
constantemente.
Puede ser que el primer vistazo de
Fuerteventura tuviese lugar en los
primeros minutos, pero tal fue la
mezcla de contenido CGI y acción en
vivo que no era real. Sin embargo,
una vez que Moisés pasó por el
Cotillo, o con fines de Exodus por el
Mar Rojo, ¡resultó verídico!
Sin duda, muchos residentes
estuvieron presentes durante
algunas de las escenas
impresionantes referentes a la
escapada de los esclavos hebreos.
Pero, sin embargo, las cabras de
la isla resultaron ser mucho más
fáciles de detectar, con la primera
apareciendo cuando Moisés asistió a
una reunión secreta con los rebeldes.
A medida que la película
continuaba, olvidamos que

“Exodus: Gods & Kings”
underway, Fuertextra
took a trip to the cinema
to watch it on the big screen. As yet,
the roll-out has yet to be completed,
with Japan the final country
scheduled on January
30. However, having
been live in Spain,
Ireland and the United
Kingdom for several
weeks, many of our
readers have had the
opportunity to see the
film.
Exodus has
Edgerton, interpretando a Moisés y
Ramsés respectivamente. Los dos
hombres fueron criados juntos como
hermanos, pero posteriormente se
separaron por las revelaciones
que involucraban el patrimonio de
Moisés. Mientras que la actuación
de Bale fue buena, la de Edgerton
fue excepcional. Sí, era malo, pero

well received by
critics, but having
seen it first hand,
this is difficult to
understand. For
us, the 2 hours and
22 minutes passed
quickly, with the
plot moving
along
swiftly. It
is fair
to
say that we are somewhat biased, as
many of the scenes including all the
highlights, were shot in Fuerteventura.
Setting this aside, we found the tale to
be gripping as the story unfolded, with
the tension steadily rising.
It may be that the first glimpse of
Fuerteventura took place in the
opening minutes, but such was the
mix of CGI content and live action
that it was not certain. However,
once Moses passed El Cotillo,
or for Exodus purposes the Red
Sea, a confirmed sighting was
logged!
No doubt many locals were
present during some of the breathtaking views of toiling or latterly
escaping Hebrew slaves. However,
the island’s goats were a great
deal easier to spot, with
the first appearing as
Moses attended a
secret meeting with
the rebels.
As the movie continued, we forgot
that the chariots were fitted with disc
brakes and that many scenes were
shot against giant green screens and
became totally absorbed in the story.
In our opinion, what really made the
movie work was the relationship
between the two main protagonists,
Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton
as Moses and Ramses respectively.
The two men were raised together
as brothers, but were subsequently
torn apart by the revelations involving
Moses’ heritage. Whilst Bale’s acting
was good, that of Edgerton was
outstanding. Yes he was evil, but you
also felt compassion for him as
he portrayed his tortured soul
brilliantly. You could feel the
conflict within him, as he battled
with his feelings for Moses,
against his need to appear a
strong ruler.
At its conclusion we remained
alone in the cinema to view the
credits, which included a special
thanks to Fuerteventura’s Cabildo
at the very end.

vivido en Fuerteventura durante los últimos 18

disfrutar tranquilamente de una cerveza. Participando
en el evento “dryathlete”, Andy como muchos más,
pensó que sería un momento ideal para dejar la
cerveza, a raíz de lo que describió personalmente
como un tiempo festivo “excesivo”. En su intento,
estará recaudando dinero para Cancer Research UK.

he final stop on this month’s charitable funding drives takes us to Andy´s efforts
to abstain from alcohol for the whole of January. Many residents and visitors
to the island will have met or know Andy, as he has lived in Fuerteventura for the
last 18 years. Currently he spends his working life doing the rounds in Corralejo
and Caleta for Food 4, after which he likes to enjoy a quiet beer in the evening!
Taking part in the event as a “dryathlete”, Andy like many others, thought it would
be an ideal time to cut out the beer, following what he personally described to be
an “excessive” festive period. During his quest, he will be raising money for Cancer
Research UK. For those wishing to make a contribution, collection tins can be

esearchers from Aberdeen University in the UK are planning an
archaeological dig that could confirm for the first time that Vikings made their
home along Spain’s northern coast.

r Irene Garcia Losquino, who is hoping to secure funding for the
research, aims to undertake a comprehensive archaeological
examination of possible Norse communities in Iberia
after a number of stone Viking anchors were washed
ashore in Galicia following a storm in March. This
event prompted her to investigate and during her
visit, the possible remains of a longphort were
discovered. This is a building made swiftly as
a base of operations during raiding of an
area and by extension, gives rise to the
possibility of a more permanent settlement
nearby. Vikings commonly only settle
near a population nucleus or in wealthy
areas.

provincia. La Dra. Losquino espera regresar en primavera con detectores de

a las puertas de los edificios “que prestan servicios básicos a la comunidad”.
Otras multas se dirigen a las personas que graban o fotografían a los agentes
de policía o a las personas que no respetan a los miembros de las fuerzas de
seguridad del país.

he advent of a New Year invariably sees a plethora of awards for those
things deemed to be the best in any given category for the year just
completed. One to catch our eye here at Fuertextra was the announcement by
Spain’s Fundéu BBVA language foundation of its word of the year. ‘Selfi’ has
been awarded the accolade by the non-profit group, which promotes the proper
use of the Spanish language by the country’s media. They chose the noun
from a list of possible contenders, which included ‘dron’ (drone), ‘postureo’
(posturing) and ‘nomofobia’, or the fear of being out of mobile phone contact.

Citizen Security Law, believing that the legislation seriously limits free
speech.

la que el mundo del deporte empieza a despertar después del
descanso navideño, con nuevas temporadas a punto de empezar.
Sin embargo, un constante ha sido el mundo del fútbol, ¡éste nunca
parece detenerse! Después de un período festivo frenético, la liga inglesa
no para ni para respirar, ya que cualquier hueco en el calendario se llena con
partidos del FA Cup y Capital One Cup. Ello hace que se disputen partidos entre
semana hasta mediados de febrero, momento en el que la liga de
campeones y Europa comenzarán nuevamente.
Echamos un vistazo más detallado a los últimos dieciséis
equipos intentando ganar el principal trofeo europeo
en las páginas 26 y 27. En cualquier caso, todos los
partidos durante las próximas cuatro semanas pueden
encontrarse en nuestra guía de las páginas centrales.
En cuanto al fútbol internacional, la fase de grupos de
la Copa de Asia estará en marcha a medida que lea

elcome to the first extrasport of 2015! This time of year sees
the world of sport reawaken after its Christmas break, with new
seasons commencing or poised to get underway. One constant
is the world of football however, which never seems to stop! After
a hectic festive period, the English Premier League offers no respite, as any
gaps in the schedule are filled by FA Cup and Capital One Cup encounters. This
keeps the midweek slots busy until the middle of February, by which time the
Champions and Europa League knock-out phases commence!
We take a more detailed look at the last sixteen clubs bidding to lift Europe’s
premier trophy on pages 26 and 27. In any case, all of the fixtures during
the next four weeks can be found in our centre page spread.
Turning to international football and the Asian Cup group stages will be
underway as you read this article. This competition features many of the
lower ranked nations registered with FIFA, although Japan, Australia
and South Korea have some pedigree on the world stage. The
final takes place on January 31, with the winner receiving an
invitation to participate in the Confederations Cup.
The other international tournament to take place is the
African Nations Cup, which
runs from January 17 until
February 8. Originally
this was to be hosted by
Morocco, but was switched
to Equatorial Guinea due
to fears relating to the
Ebola virus. Chelsea fans will be hoping that the Ivory Coast has a successful
tournament, as their team includes Yaya Toure! The longer Yaya is in Africa, the
more games he will miss for Manchester City, who of course is head to head in a
battle for the title with the West London club.
Away from football and the first Grand Slam of the tennis calendar starts
on January 19. The Australian Open is the most physically gruelling of the
four slams, given the incredibly high temperatures prevailing in Melbourne.
The tournament has been criticised for the
dangers caused by conducting matches under
a harsh sun, which has seen several players
hospitalised. As such, only the strongest
competitors prevail and four time champion
Novak Djokovic is once again the favourite to win
the men’s singles. Rafa Nadal is the Serbian’s main
rival, but is only just returning from long term injury layoff.
Moving into February and Ireland defend the Six Nations
Championship won so thrillingly in 2014. The six week
marathon gets underway on February 6, with Wales
hosting England in the Friday evening match at 8.05
p.m. The following day sees Ireland start their bid to
retain the title in Italy at 3.30 p.m., followed by France
againgst Scotland in Paris at 6 p.m.

players prior to each leg, as both
are in embroiled in battles for their
domestic championships. Whilst in

arnaval siempre es un momento especial en Fuerteventura y, en
previsión, echamos un vistazo a las próximas fiestas. Con celebraciones
y cabalgadas alrededor de la isla en febrero, la temporada de carnaval durará
hasta marzo, lo que garantiza una oportunidad para que
todos puedan disfrutar de la diversión. Tradicionalmente
el carnaval se celebra antes de la Cuaresma, siendo las
cabalgadas y las fiestas en la calle una vista común en
los lugares que deciden participar de éste. Dentro de las
islas, el Carnaval se remonta a los primeros registros de
la colonización europea y posiblemente incluso antes. En
1605, Gaspar Luis Hidalgo hizo alusión a la costumbre de
que los hombres se vistiesen como mujeres y viceversa.
Para los novatos del carnaval, este sigue siendo una
práctica muy común hoy en día, particularmente los
hombres optan por un disfraz del sexo opuesto.

arnival is always a special time in Fuerteventura and in anticipation, we
take a look at the upcoming festivities. With celebrations and parades
starting on the island in February, Carnival season will last long into March,
ensuring an opportunity for everybody to enjoy the
fun! Carnival traditionally occurs before Lent, with
parades and street parties a common sight in those
locations that choose to participate. Within the
islands, Carnival dates back to the earliest records
of European settlement and possibly even before.
In 1605, Gaspar Luis Hidalgo alluded to the habit
of men dressing up as women and vice versa!
For carnival novices, this cross dressing element
remains a very common practice today, with males in
particular, opting to attend dressed as the opposite
sex.

omo siempre, la época navideña y fin de año ha sido un momento
emocionante en Fuerteventura. Muchos residentes extranjeros
aprovecharon la oportunidad para disfrazarse y unirse a los turistas
en la celebración de los muchos locales.
Como siempre, las diversas cabalgatas de Reyes disponían de un comienzo
colorido para el 2015, por la tradicional celebración de la llegada de los Reyes
Magos el 5 de enero. Los reyes llegaron en barco, antes de montar en sus
camellos, ¡ello fue todo un espectáculo!
Abajo publicamos una selección de fotos tomadas durante las festividades,
¡fue una semana bastante animada!
A
s always, Christmas and New Year was an exciting period here in
Fuerteventura. Many of the locals took the opportunity to don fancy
dress and join with the holidaymakers in celebrating in the many
bars and restaurants.
The various processions for Reyes provided a colourful start to 2015, by way
of the traditional celebration of the three kings’ arrival on January 5. With the
Kings landing by boat, before taking to their camels, it was indeed a sight to
behold.
Here we print a selection of photos taken during the festivities, in what was a
pretty lively week!

ucharas de chocolate caliente
Ingredientes:
- 150g de chocolate negro
- 150g de chocolate con leche
- 150g de chocolate blanco
- Mini nubes
Método
Derretir los tres tipos de chocolate
en recipientes separados sobre
unas cacerolas de agua hirviendo
hasta que esté suave (o utilizar el
microondas en plazos
de 30 segundos,
luego revolverlo
y repetir hasta
que quede
suave).
Vierta el
chocolate
negro en
14 vasos
de chupito de
plástico. Añada una
capa de chocolate blanco
y finalmente otra de chocolate con
leche. Espolvorear por encima
con las mini nubes y dejar que el
chocolate se endurezca un poco.
Inserte una cuchara de madera o de
plástico en el centro y deje enfriar.
Guarde en el refrigerador.
Para utilizarlo, sumerja el vaso
de chupito rápidamente en agua
hirviendo para aflojar el chocolate.
Una vez liberado, meta la cuchara
de chocolate en una taza con de
300ml de leche caliente para la última
bebida de chocolate caliente.

Ingredientes:
- 400g azúcar glas
- 4 cucharadas de leche evaporada
- 5 gotas de esencia de menta
- Unas gotas colorante verde
(opcional)
- 30g de chocolate negro
Método
Tamizar el azúcar en
un bol. Añadir la
leche, la esencia y
el colorante (si se
utiliza). Combine en
una masa suave. En una
superficie espolvoreada
con azúcar glas, extender la
masa de ½ cm de espesor. Saque
pequeños círculos y dejar bajo un
paño de cocina para que endurezcan
durante la noche.
Fundir el chocolate sobre una
cacerola de agua hirviendo. Con
una manga pastelera marcar líneas
finas sobre el chocolate derretido.
Dejar que el chocolate se endurezca.
Guarde en el refrigerador.

Ingredientes:
- 200g de chocolate con leche
o negro
- 100g arándanos secos
- Pistachos 100g, sin
cáscara y picados
- 50g estrellas de
chocolate blanco
Método
Derretir el chocolate
en un recipiente sobre
una olla con agua hirviendo.
Colocar papel de hornear en una
bandeja y poner gotas de chocolate
sobre el papel. Usando un
cuchillo dar forma de
corazones (asegurarse
de que están bien
separados).
Espolvorear con unos
pocos arándanos,
nueces y estrellas
blancas sobre cada
corazón y dejar que
endurezcan. Retire el papel
de hornear y guarde en cajitas de
regalo. Guardar en un lugar fresco.

thought we would try to create some
appropriate treats, but with a view to
firmly keeping costs to a minimum.
Incredibly the Fuertextra team have
been able to offer you a choice of
delights with which to impress your
loved ones, but at what we estimate
to be less than a single euro’s worth
of ingredients!
ot Chocolate Spoons
Ingredients:
- 150g dark
chocolate
- 150g milk
chocolate
- 150g white
chocolate
- Mini
marshmallows
Method
Melt the three types of
chocolate in separate
bowls over pans of
simmering water until
smooth (or use the
microwave with 30
second bursts, stirring
then repeating until
smooth).
Spoon dark chocolate
into 14 plastic shot
glasses. Add a layer
of white chocolate
and finally milk
chocolate. Scatter
over marshmallows
and allow the chocolate
to harden slightly. Insert
a wooden
or plastic
spoon in the
centre and
allow to set
fully. Store in
the fridge.
To use, dip
the shot glass
fleetingly into
boiling water to loosen the
chocolate. Once released, stir
the chocolate spoon into a 300ml

mug full of hot
milk for the
ultimate hot
chocolate drink.
eppermint Creams
Ingredients:
- 400g icing sugar
- 4 tbsp evaporated milk
- 5 drops peppermint essence
- A few drops green food
colouring (optional)
- 30g dark
chocolate
Method
Sift the sugar into
a bowl. Add the
milk, essence
and colouring (if
using). Combine into
a soft dough. On a surface
dusted with icing sugar
roll the dough to ½cm
thick. Stamp out small
rounds and leave
under a tea towel to
harden overnight.
Melt the chocolate
over a pan of simmering
water. With a piping bag
drizzle on fine lines of the
melted chocolate. Allow the
chocolate to harden. Store
in the fridge.
ruit & Nut Chocolate
Hearts
Ingredients:
- 200g milk or plain
chocolate
- 100g dried
cranberries
- 100g pistachio nuts,
shelled and chopped
- 50g pot white chocolate stars
Method
Melt the chocolate in a bowl over
a pan of simmering water. Line
some trays with non-stick baking
parchment and spoon blobs of
chocolate onto the paper. Using a
knife shape into hearts (ensure they
are set well apart).

procedimientos involucrados, no

inmobiliario, junto con un abogado
independiente, le guiará a través de
cada etapa de la compra de la casa
de sus sueños. Recientemente, este
mandato ha sido ampliado para
incluir una orientación en cuanto a la
eficiencia energética de su propuesta
de compra. Prueba de ello es el
Certificado de Eficiencia Energética
(CEE), que por obligación legal el
vendedor debe proporcionar.

country. Whilst this article gives a
flavour of the procedures involved, it
is no substitute for specialist advice.
A good estate agent, coupled with
an independent lawyer, will guide
you through each stage of buying
your dream home. Recently, this
remit has been expanded to include
guidance as to the energy efficiency
of your proposed purchase. This
is evidenced by its Certificado de
Eficiencia Energética (CEE) which it
is the legal obligation of the seller to
provide.
A lawyer will ensure the property is
purchased with full legal title, free of
debt, as well as arrange Power of
Attorney should you not be present at
the various signings. Your agent can
help you select a lawyer, as they will
have experience in dealing with many
local firms, or alternatively, the British
Consulate will provide a list.
To reserve your chosen property,
a Reservation Deposit of around
5% of the agreed price is paid
and a contract of sale completed.
The contract must be written in
Spanish, but a translation in your
own language will be included. Your

and checks to ensure all is in order,
prior to the signing of the private
purchase contract, within 28 days
of the reservation. The final stage

authorised to provide the final title
deed. The balance of the purchase
price is paid at this point, as well as
the taxes due and possession of the
property passes from seller to buyer.
The transfer of ownership still needs
to be registered, and your lawyer
will arrange this. Utility companies,
providing electricity and water, should
also be notified.
The taxes and fees payable will
include purchase tax of 6.5%, lawyer
and notary fees, and normally, a tax
on any increase in the land value
since the last sale, known as ‘plus
valia’. As a rough guide, 10% of the
purchase price should be budgeted
for these costs.
Having purchased the property, in the
majority of cases it will be necessary
to pay a monthly fee, known as
communidad. This payment is to
cover costs associated with shared
areas that your home shares with
neighbouring houses. Examples of
such areas are swimming pools,
gardens, lighting and walk-ways. The
communidad cost is usually between
€50-100 per month.

se encuentra en su estado más
saludable desde el advenimiento de

en las ventas en 7 de los 9 meses
publicados en 2014, impulsado por
los altos niveles de interés por parte
de inversores extranjeros.
A nivel de la isla, estamos a
punto de ver la resurrección de
la construcción en Fuerteventura.
Se espera que varios proyectos
comiencen durante 2015, lo que
a su vez a de crear las primeras
oportunidades de compra sobre
plano desde hace muchos años.
La construcción va a crear
empleo e impulsar otras industrias
relacionadas. Referente a las
propiedades existentes que están
vacías, muchas han sido vendidas
y el resto están siendo eliminadas
a un ritmo rápido. Si 2014 fue el
año de las ventas embargadas por
los bancos, es probable que 2015
vea un retorno a un mercado más
convencional, dado que los bancos
informan que sus carteras están
disminuyendo.
En conclusión, Fuerteventura está
bien posicionada para disfrutar un
positivo 2015 desde la perspectiva
de propiedad, al igual que muchas
de las zonas costeras y las

furry friends! Far from being
a source of fun, this is in
actuality a serious business,
with fashion designers
devoted to finding the ideal
garments to set trends.
Apparently, for some
owners, it’s about making
a statement in the same
way as
buying a
new dress or suit
for themselves. For
others, it’s simply
a way to care for
their pet and ensure
they are kept warm
during the winter
months. However,
the former is on the
rise as evidenced by the increasing
number of dressed-up dogs
and cats that are being posted
via social
networking
sites.
As ever,
most of
the craziest
stuff originates
from America.
Here a company
introduced
a fake line
devoted to
dog attire,
as an April
Fool’s Day
joke. Following
huge interest
American Eagle
Outfitters
where forced
to create the
garments
for real,
with their
tiny puffy jackets, sweaters and hats
available to buy in their stores. At
the more ludicrous end of the scale,
Dog Fashion Spa in New York sells
doggy and mommy bathrobes. This
‘matching’ fad has led to many spas
and salons building hers and ‘furs’
facilities - one side to pamper the
woman and the other to treat their
dogs.

and Christmas, at which time a very
special church service was conducted.
This festive gathering, held at
Westbourne’s St Ambrose Church in
Bournemouth was attended by not
only worshipping Christians, but also
their pets. The congregation consisted
of more than 100 people, as well as a
host of dogs and even a tortoise!
The Reverend Chris Colledge said it
was much like a ceremony from the
hit television situation comedy “The
Vicar of Dibley”. This was the second
occasion of this type, following an
earlier wedding where two dogs acted
as ring bearers for the happy couple.
“I think the service is a great way to
celebrate the role animals have in
keeping people feeling loved and
safe,” he said.

De vez en cuando, es normal
que un tesoro de monedas romanas
sea descubierto en algún lugar por
arqueólogos en
el curso de sus
investigaciones.
Lo que es muy
poco común
es que el
descubrimiento
sea una flota
de sesenta
coches clásicos
desenterrados
en una granja
al oeste de
Francia! Por
improbable que
ello pueda ser,
es exactamente
lo que sucedió,
cuando un equipo
de subastadores
intentaba resolver
un misterio de
treinta años.
Se encontraban
estudiando sus registros históricos,
cuando identificaron una subasta
de varias cosas que no fueron
vendidas. Se trataba de vehículos
pertenecientes al magnate del
transporte francés, Roger Baillon,
quien intentaba crear su propio museo
del automóvil. Cuando su negocio
tenía problemas en 1977, el Sr. Baillon
vendió 50 de sus coches, aunque
en aquel momento, se pensaba
que todos los coches habían sido
vendidos. Una vez identificada la
disparidad, la búsqueda les llevó a
unos corrales agrícolas abandonados.

From time to time, it is normal
that a hoard of Roman coins will
be discovered some where by
archaeologists in the course of their
painstaking research. What is highly
unusual is when the discovery is a
fleet of sixty classic cars which were
unearthed in a farm in Western France!
Improbable as this may seem, this is
exactly what happened, when a team
of auctioneers turned detective to solve
a thirty year old mystery.
On examination of their historical
records, they identified an auction
whereby several listed items were
never sold. These vehicles had been
the property of French transport
tycoon, Roger Baillon, who set out to
create his own automobile museum.
When his business ran into trouble in
1977, Mr Baillon sold 50 of his cars,
albeit at this time, it was thought the
whole fleet had been disposed of.
Once the disparity was identified, the
trail led them to a series of ramshackle
farm shelters. Here, dozens of classic
models were found to be covered
only by flimsy tarpaulin, supported by
wooden posts. In some cases the only
cover from the elements was provided
by corrugated iron sheets and a few
old motoring magazines! As such,
many were covered in weeds and ivy,

not to mention three decades of dirt
and dust.
The jewel in the crown was
undoubtedly a Ferrari 250 GT SWB
California Spyder – one of only 37 to
be built. This particular model belonged
originally to the French screen legend,
Alain Delon. This alone is expected to
sell for around €12m when the trove is
auctioned in Paris during February.
Of the remainder, at least three of the
cars are known to have belonged to
celebrities, including a Talbot Lago
T26s “Grand Sport Aérodynamique”.
This was one of several T26s in the
collection and once belonged to King
Farouk of Egypt (1920-1965).
It is expected many of the cars will
be purchased by private collectors or
motoring museums.
