Every Century Skill
Wow! How quickly time goes! We have already completed a quarter of our school year.
The staff at school can hardly believe how quickly the first quarter went by. It seems like
it was just the middle of August when we were welcoming all of our students for the start
of the school year and now we are in the month of November.
Speaking of time, for the last fourteen years, we have used the term 21st century skills. In
schools, we knew that we had to teach our students the 21st century skills they would
need to compete in a future workforce. These skills started with the teaching of basic
technology skills like creating presentations, word processing, and becoming a digital
citizen on the world-wide-web. This instruction helped lead our classes into teaching
more in-depth skills, like programming, scratch and robotics. And while these skills are
essential for the world our children now live in, there is still the one skill that trumps
everything else.
Reading.
This month we focus on the Prairie value of Read, Read, Read. Reading continues to be the
skill that transcends time. Regardless of the medium, (book, magazine, computer, ereader, etc.) in which our children will access information, their ability to read,
comprehend, and analyze text will be fundamental in just about every profession, both
today, and in the future.
Our new Colorado State standards have evolved with time as well. Students are now
expected to read from multiple sources, including articles, blogs, and videos, and are then
able to pull out meaning from each of these. In our classrooms our children are studying
books, articles, blogs, and videos. Think of the top news stories of the past month. You
can watch a newscast on the Ebola outbreak, then read an article in a local newspaper,
engage in a chat room on the Internet, and listen to a podcast on your phone. Then we
must make meaning of all that information and come to our own thoughts and opinions.
We know that our society has more access to information, in a quicker amount of time,
than at any other time in history. One’s ability to access this information (read),
understand what it is saying (comprehend), put into a local context (analyze), and make
decisions that will help make our world a better place (create) will be needed.
And that is a skill that is important in any century.

Cada habilidad del siglo
¡ Wow! Qué rápido pasa el tiempo! Hemos finalizado un trimestre de nuestro año escolar. El
personal de la escuela apenas puede creer la rapidez con la que el primer trimester a
pasado. Parece que fue sólo la mitad de agosto, cuando estuvimos dandole la bienvenida a
todos nuestros estudiantes para el inicio del año escolar y ahora estamos en el mes de
noviembre.
Hablando sobre el tiempo, en los últimos catorce años, hemos utilizado el término
capacidades del siglo 21. En las escuelas, sabemos que tenemos que enseñarles a nuestros
alumnos las capacidades del siglo 21 que necesitan para competir en una mano de obra en
el futuro. Estas habilidades comienzan con conocimientos de tecnología y enseñanza básica.
Como crear presentaciones, el procesamiento de texto, y que se conviertan en un ciudadano
digital por el mundo entero por internet. Esta instrucción ha ayudado a liderar nuestras
clases en la enseñanza más a profundidad en las habilidades, como la programación, scratch
y la robótica. Y mientras que estas destrezas son esenciales para el mundo en el cual viven
nuestros niños, aun habra la habilidad que supera todo lo demás
Lectura
Este mes nos centraremos en el valor de Prairie. Leer, Leer, Leer. La lectura sigue siendo la
habilidad que trasciende el tiempo. Independientemente del medio, (libro, revista, equipo,
e-reader, etc.) en el que los niños tendrán acceso a información, su capacidad para leer,
comprender y analizar texto será fundamental en casi todas las profesiones, tanto hoy como
en el futuro.
Las normas del Estado de Colorado han hido evolucionando con el tiempo. Los estudiantes
ahora tienen la expectativas de leer de varias fuentes, incluyendo artículos, mensajes y
vídeos, y luego son capaces de extraer significado de cada uno de estos. En el salon de clase
nuestros niños están estudiando los libros, artículos, mensajes y vídeos. Piensen en las
noticias principales del mes pasado. Usted podrá ver un noticiero en el brote de Ébola, a
continuación leer un artículo en el periódico local, participar en una sala de chat en la
Internet, y escuchar un anuncio por en el teléfono. A continuación, debemos dar un sentido
a toda la información y llegar a nuestras propias ideas y opinions.
Sabemos que nuestra sociedad tiene más acceso a la información, a un tiempo más rápido
que en cualquier otro momento de la historia. La capacidad de tener acceso a esta
información (lectura), entender lo que está diciendo (entender), que entró en un contexto
local (analizar), y tomar decisiones que le ayudará a hacer de nuestro mundo un lugar mejor
(crear) será necesario.
Y eso es una habilidad que es importante en cualquier siglo.
