The CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL for
2015 will officially get underway on the weekend of
January 24th – 25th. Our goal for 2015 is $39,600.
With the help of all of our parishioners we will be
able to reach and exceed our goal for 2015. Last
year we collected about $49,600 with about 125
parishioners contributing. Our hope is that this year.
more parishioners will make a gift or pledge for the
Catholic Ministries Appeal helping us to exceed our
goal for 2015. Please remember that our parish
shares in the funds that are raised in the Catholic
Ministries Appeal. If you have given to this
important appeal in the past, please do so again
this year. If you have never given or haven’t given
in a few years please consider contributing this
year. Remember your gift to the Catholic Ministries
Appeal helps our diocese and our parish to provide
many important pastoral care programs and faith
formation programs to many people both
throughout our diocese and in our own parish.

Community
Dear Friends,
Last weekend we celebrated the feast of the
Baptism of the Lord, which brought the season
Page 3
of Christmas to completion. Today, we celebrate
the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. This
weekend is about recognizing “our call” in life.
Who are we called to be and how will we live it
out as a person of faith?
In the first reading from the First Book of
Samuel we hear about the call of Samuel. At first
Samuel doesn’t understand that God is calling
him. He believes that it was Eli calling out to
him. Eli comes to understand that it is the Lord
God who is calling out to Samuel and he tells
him to respond when he is called once again with
the words: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is
listening.” It is a very beautiful story. The Lord
calls and Samuel, with the help from Eli,
responds to the call. That willingness to “listen”
will change Samuel’s life. He will proclaim the
“Word of the Lord” to the people of God. This
relationship between God and Samuel will
change his life, as God speaks to him and he in
turn responds to the “word” that God speaks to
him. Eli is instrumental in the process. He guides
the young Samuel to answer the call of God that
Samuel experiences deep within the core of his
being.
The reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the
Corinthians gives us an insight into Paul who,
like Samuel, experiences “a call.” His call is from
the Risen Christ. His response to that call will
change his life! He becomes the “apostle to the
Gentiles.” He preaches the gospel of the Lord to
the nations. Paul’s emphasis today is on the unity
that we have with God. Our whole being is a gift
from the Lord and our whole being is in
relationship with the Lord. Paul is questioning
the mistaken belief that we are two very separate
parts; a body and a soul. For Paul we are one
holy person. He rejects the dualistic notion that
separates an individual into different parts. For
Paul we are one. Our whole being is to give glory
to God.
The gospel this weekend is from John. John the
Baptist is very clear about his “calling.” He is to
witness to Jesus of Nazareth, to point him out to
those who are seeking the kingdom of God in
their lives. John the Baptist, like Eli and Paul,
point the “seekers” in the right direction. Eli tells
January 18, 2015
Samuel to open his heart to the voice of God that
speaks to him, Paul tells the early Gentile
followers of the Risen Lord to live the life of
Christ that is deep within them, John the Baptist
tells his disciples to follow the “Lamb of God.”
John “decreases” so that the kingdom might
truly come through the gospel proclaimed by
Jesus.
The disciples of John encounter Jesus and he
asks them: “What are you looking for”? What
an incredible question! It’s one of the basic
questions that change a person’s life. It is the
question that is asked of each one of us at some
point of our faith journey. They simply respond:
“Rabbi, where are you staying”? And he simply
says: “Come and see.” As Jesus invites them to
“come and see,” so he also invites us to come and
see. What we come to discover in this journey
(this vocation of being a disciple) is the depth of
God’s love for us that sustains us throughout our
journey.
This week we are encouraged to consider our
own “being called” and our response to that call
of God that speaks to us in the depth of our
being. May this week of Ordinary Time be filled
with abundant graces for all of us!
Peace,
Fr. Steve

YOUTH MINISTRY UPDATE: A new year
has begun and we are still in conversation about
how best to create a Youth Ministry that will serve
the needs of our three parishes (Our Lady of
Fatima, St. Aloysius, and St. Peter’s Parishes). In a
little more than two years there have been two
Youth Ministers. Veronica Ticas moved on to a
ministry at Sacred Heart High School after St.
Ignatius Retreat House was closed and her ministry
there was ended. She ministered to our three
January 18, 2015
Page 5
parishes as part of her ministry at the retreat house.
Meaghan came after Veronica and after a year or
so she moved to another position other than Youth
Ministry which offered her a better salary than our
parish could afford. The other factor is that the
response on the part of our teens was
disappointing. In a time when cost is an important
factor in determining where resources are spent we
are challenged to invest our resources where they
will reat abundant fruit. The question is a complex
one. Please keep these questions in your prayer as
this New Year begins.

Corner
We wait for the Lord, but
when He calls we do not
hear Him.
In today’s first reading the Lord calls Samuel 3
times. He finally answers with help from Eli. How
long does it take us to answer Jesus when he
calls us? Perhaps, if we quiet our minds and
hearts and take a little time we too can hear his
call with a little help from the Holy Spirit. The
Holy Spirit first came to us at Baptism and then
again at Confirmation - truly a gift from Christ.
He is forever with us. God calls us to serve
Him. We can begin by Praying for the sick and
homebound and all those who have requested
prayers through our CaringHands Prayer Chain.
I ask you to become a member of the
CaringHands Prayer Chain. You have been
called. Will you hear the call? This is a Parish
Ministry. Please call Marge Walsh at (516)7672936 or email: [email protected]

UN MENSAJE DE
NUESTRO PARROCO
Queridos amigos,
¿Quiénes somos llamados a
llamada. Esa disposición a "escuchar" cambiará
Paz,
Padre Steve
