MATTHEW CATHOLIC CHURCH Faith, Love, Community, Service ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 18, 2015 ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Monsignor John Talesfore, Pastor One Notre Dame Avenue San Mateo, CA 94402 (650) 344-7622 Phone (650) 344-4830 Fax www.stmatthew-parish.org MASSES/MISAS Daily Masses/Misas Diarias: 6:30am (except Saturday), 12:05pm Saturday/Sábado: 5:00pm, 7:00pm (Español) Sunday/Domingo: 7:00am, 8:45am (Español), 10:45am, 12:30pm, 3:00pm (Chinese in the small Chapel), 5:30pm (Español) Confession/Confesiones: Monday-Friday Lunes a Viernes 5:00pm-5:30pm in the Chapel Saturday/Sábado 11:30am-12:00noon & 4:30pm-5:00pm My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The Extraordinary Season of Ordinary Time Because of the connotations of the term ordinary in English and ordinario in Spanish, many people think that Ordinary Time refers to the parts of the Church year that are unimportant and don’t really count. But why is Ordinary Time called ordinary? Ordinary Time is called "ordinary" simply because the weeks DO count; they are numbered (first, second, third, fourth, etc.). The Latin word ordinalis refers to numbers in a series. Modern mathematics still calls these numbers ordered in a series “the ordinal numbers” or “los números ordinales” (“first, second, third, fourth, etc” in English or “primera , segunda, tercera , cuarta, etc” in Spanish.). For that matter, we might just call the major streets running east to west in Downtown San Mateo “the Ordinary Streets” because they are numbered in just such an ordered series. “Ordinary” stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the English word “order” and the Spanish word “orden.” Thus, Ordinary Time is in fact the ordered life of the Church. It’s the period in which we live our lives neither in feasting (as in the Christmas and Easter seasons) or in more severe penance (as in Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the Second Coming of Christ. In counting the weeks, we acknowledge that this time IS important and to be measured carefully. It's appropriate, therefore, that the Gospel for this Second Sunday of Ordinary Time (which is actually the first Sunday celebrated in Ordinary Time) always features either John the Baptist's first acknowledgment of Christ as the Lamb of God or Christ's first miracle—the transformation of water into wine at the wedding at Cana. Thus for Catholics, Ordinary Time is the part of the year in which Christ, the Lamb of God, walks among us and transforms our lives – as we contemplate the extraordinary series of events by which God’s unique plan for each of us unfolds. That's why there's nothing "ordinary" about Ordinary Time. These weeks DO count. That's why there's nothing "ordinary" about Ordinary Time. These weeks DO count. Msgr. John Talesfore, Pastor ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Second Sunday in Ordinary Time A popular hymn used in many Catholic churches is Here I am Lord. That hymn is based in part on our first reading from the Book of Samuel. The Lord wants us to respond just the way Samuel does in the reading. God calls each of us to discipleship through lives of stewardship. Just as Samuel was confused, we, too, may fail to understand what God is calling us to at times. Nevertheless, just like Samuel we do need to respond "Here I am Lord." That is not always easy and it can be uncomfortable at times. Eli instructs Samuel to respond "Speak Lord, for your servant is listening." Samuel does so and "the Lord was with him." Our challenge is first to hear God's call. It is there always, but we must listen for it. Then we need to respond to that call, and we need to respond in ways that show we recognize that the call is to service and the call is for us to be disciples. It is only implied initially, but it is clear that the Lord is calling Samuel by name. In the same way God calls each of us by name. We need to hear that as Samuel did, and we need to respond as Samuel did, "Here am I Lord. I come to do your will." —La oración Católica Loyola Press ✂ Please Cut Out This “Thank You Ad” and Present It The Next Time You Patronize One of Our Advertisers immediatecare.org HomeCare Professionals Are you or a loved one recovering from surgery or an illness?
