My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The Extraordinary Season of Ordinary Time
Because of the connotations of the term ordinary in English and
ordinario in Spanish, many people think that Ordinary Time refers
to the parts of the Church year that are unimportant and don’t
really count. But why is Ordinary Time called ordinary?
Ordinary Time is called "ordinary" simply because the weeks DO
count; they are numbered (first, second, third, fourth, etc.). The
Latin word ordinalis refers to numbers in a series. Modern
mathematics still calls these numbers ordered in a series “the
ordinal numbers” or “los números ordinales” (“first, second, third,
fourth, etc” in English or “primera , segunda, tercera , cuarta, etc”
in Spanish.). For that matter, we might just call the major streets
running east to west in Downtown San Mateo “the Ordinary
Streets” because they are numbered in just such an ordered series.
“Ordinary” stems from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the
English word “order” and the Spanish word “orden.” Thus,
Ordinary Time is in fact the ordered life of the Church. It’s the
period in which we live our lives neither in feasting (as in the
Christmas and Easter seasons) or in more severe penance (as in
Advent and Lent), but in watchfulness and expectation of the
Second Coming of Christ. In counting the weeks, we acknowledge
that this time IS important and to be measured carefully.

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,
(cont’d)
realmente no cuentan. Pero ¿Porque al Tiempo
Ordinario se le llama ordinario?
Al Tiempo Ordinario se le llama “ordinario”
simplemente porque las semanas sí cuentan; son
numeradas (primera, segunda, tercera cuarta, etc.)
ordinales” (primero, segundo, tercero, etc.)
It's appropriate, therefore, that the Gospel for this
Second Sunday of Ordinary Time (which is actually
the first Sunday celebrated in Ordinary Time) always
features either John the Baptist's first
acknowledgment of Christ as the Lamb of God or
Christ's first miracle—the transformation of water into
wine at the wedding at Cana. Thus for Catholics,
Ordinary Time is the part of the year in which Christ,
the Lamb of God, walks among us and transforms our
lives – as we contemplate the extraordinary series of
events by which God’s unique plan for each of us
unfolds.
That's why there's nothing "ordinary" about Ordinary
Time. These weeks DO count.
That's why there's nothing "ordinary" about Ordinary
Time. These weeks DO count.
Msgr. John Talesfore, Pastor

Second Sunday in
Ordinary Time
A popular hymn used in
many Catholic churches is
Here I am Lord. That hymn
is based in part on our first
reading from the Book of
Samuel. The Lord wants us
to respond just the way
Samuel does in the reading.
God calls each of us to
discipleship through lives of
stewardship.
Just as Samuel was
confused, we, too, may fail
to understand what God is
calling us to at times.
Nevertheless, just like
Samuel we do need to
respond "Here I am Lord."
That is not always easy and
it can be uncomfortable at
times.
Eli instructs Samuel to
respond "Speak Lord, for
your servant is listening."
Samuel does so and "the
Lord was with him."
Our challenge is first to
hear God's call. It is there
always, but we must listen
for it. Then we need to
respond to that call, and we
need to respond in ways that
show we recognize that the
call is to service and the call
is for us to be disciples. It is
only implied initially, but it
is clear that the Lord is
calling Samuel by name. In
the same way God calls
each of us by name. We
need to hear that as Samuel
did, and we need to respond
as Samuel did, "Here am I
Lord. I come to do your
will."

Tiempo Ordinario. Estas semanas cuentan.

This weekend we celebrate
Martin Luther King’s Birthday
It is a day to thank God that so much
progress has been made in this
country in the way in which people of
different races and colors treat each
other with respect and search for a
measure of justice and equality for
all. Yet much more needs to be done
and this weekend encourages us to
reflect on what each one can do, both
individually and collectively, to
promote respect, justice and equality.
Let us continue to pray that these Gospel values
become reality in our society.

Eucharistic Ministers Needed
We have a shortage of Eucharistic Ministers for
the English Masses. Eucharistic Ministers are
those that serve the Body and Blood of Christ
during Communion. Please consider being a
Eucharist Minister. It is a wonderful way to
serve both Jesus and the community, as well as
a way of deepening your own spirituality.
The requirements are that you be Baptized and
Confirmed, attend Mass every Sunday and
have a deep love for Jesus. You will receive
training and can serve at the Mass of your
choice. We are hoping to have new Eucharistic
Ministers start serving in January.
If you are interested please check the notice in
the bulletin and contact Kathryn Cross at 650344-7622 X104 and [email protected]

invita a “orar constantemente” (1 Tesalonicenses
