Volume 49, No. 3 January 18, 2015 could ever come into our house as I was growing up without one or the other of my parents wanting to feed them. We as humans have such an instinct to feed people as a way to nurture and care for others. Food is not only one of our most elemental needs, it’s also a vehicle for celebration and mourning, hospitality and care. It was ironic, then that I didn’t even realize until I was proofreading it that I used the phrase “spiritual nourishment” in the article about daily Mass. Just as we instinctually want to feed others, our heavenly father feeds us with the gift of his Word and himself in the Eucharist. On the Cover Sacred Heart, pre-1913. Editor’s Note I was struck this week that thru coincidence both of my main articles in the Outreach section were about feeding people. It made me think about how no one Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus 404.522.6800 ACTIVE CATHOLIC STATUS: To be an active parishioner, a person must be registered in the parish, attend Mass regularly, and be involved in Time, Talent, and Stewardship. John points to Jesus: “Look,” he says, “there is the Lamb of God.” John’s faith in Jesus is evident, so evident that John’s disciples immediately leave his side to follow this Jesus. The two disciples make their own act of faith. They follow Jesus, spend time with him, and are quick to spread the good news of their discovery: “We have found the Messiah.” It is easy to forget that the expectations of generations, the hopes of many ages of faithful people were being fulfilled in these simple acts of faith. The Lamb of God, the Messiah, foretold by the prophets, had finally come. Nearly everyone among the Jewish people was watching for the Messiah back then; who in our own society watches for signs of the presence of the Messiah today? In the Gospel passages from Mark, we hear of the increasing popularity of Jesus, as crowds gather to hear him and be healed; he continues to instruct them and comes into conflict with the Pharisees over external and hypocritical following of the Law of Moses. Organ Prelude Grazioso, Roe Betty Roe, born in 1930, studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She is a composer in many forms, from solo songs to operas. Organ Postlude Hymn Setting, Hyfrydol, Healey Willan Healy Willan’s (1880-1968) music is very well written and is played in many churches. For many years he was organistchoirmaster at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Toronto. “Hyfrydol” is the Welsh name given to today’s processional hymn. This is a powerful setting of one of the most famous hymns of all times. Butler 4 FAITH LIFE E CELEBRATING WEEKDAYS ach week SPIRES includes the readings used during the weekday Masses. We do this so that even if you cannot attend Mass on a weekday, you can still read the sequence of readings used by the whole church. Over a period of several weeks, weekday readings are often entire books of the Bible, and it can be easier to see the message of salvation unfolding when read in sequence, but in small doses each day. It often makes it easier to enter into a particular Liturgical Season by meditating on the daily readings. reading of the Scriptures, and celebrate the saints and feasts through the year. When we celebrate Mass, we receive spiritual nourishment by Word and Sacrament, and daily attendance is one of the best ways to grow in faith and grace. It is also an opportunity for a parish to be strengthened. We come together to this daily celebration, forging friendships and bonds of care and concern for each other, thus we grow as the Church. It is wonderful when other activities (such as coffee mornings or days out) flow from the daily Mass in a parish. If prayer is to be a heartbeat of our private lives, then daily worship (especially the Mass) is a “public” heartbeat of our parish communities. In the very earliest days of the Church there was no such thing as “weekday Mass” - Mass (the Eucharist) was only celebrated on a Sunday, in memory of the resurrection of Jesus. As the centuries passed, gradually Mass began to be celebrated on certain weekdays and then on every weekday. For many people it is difficult to attend Mass daily, with people working all over the city, a great distance from their home parishes. In an era with fewer priests, we inevitably have fewer Mass times scheduled, which ultimately makes daily attendance even more difficult. Sacred Heart has the added complication of parking availability. So the faithful must do what they can. Realize the value of the Mass whenever and wherever it is celebrated. If you cannot physically attend Mass, then try to find a moment each day to “spiritually unite yourself” with the Mass being celebrated by reviewing the readings for the day. As we begin a new calendar year, with resolutions fresh in our mind, this might be one to consider. It was only after the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s that daily Mass was given a real boost. Prior to that, it was left up to the priest to choose the texts for the daily Mass (unless it was an important feast). The Council gave a new importance to daily Mass, by allocating Bible readings and prayers for every day of the year, and by reorganizing the Calendar of Saints so that they too could be celebrated. The situation today is that the Church considers it a wonderful thing (if possible) to celebrate Mass every day, to follow the ASK THE EDITOR… Catherine, I’ve noticed that when you list the Mass readings on page 3, there are frequently letters after the verse numbers. What do those mean? Those letters identify a phrase of the verse that’s included in a reading if that reading starts or ends in the middle of a verse. For instance, today’s first reading is 1 Samuel 3:3b-10. This means the First Book of Samuel, Chapter 3, Verse 3 (more specifically the second phrase of Verse 3) through 10. The complete verse is, “The lamp of God was not yet extinguished, and Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was.” But the reading you will hear at Mass begins, “Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was.” 5 OUTREACH T MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY he Meals on Wheels Ministry is looking for additional Sacred Heart volunteers to help deliver meals to the elderly and shut-ins. This program helps ensure that the elderly who can’t get out or can’t handle preparing their own meals get a nutritious meal delivered by a friendly face. Sacred Heart has provided drivers to the program for a number of years and is looking to fill several volunteer slots. The service would be on Tuesday mornings, beginning between 10:00 and 10:30am. The volunteers meet at First Presbyterian Church (next door to the High Museum) where the food has been prepared and packed. There each driver receives their list and the food. The routes are in the Midtown area and take no more than two hours to navigate. After the route is completed, the drivers are then free to go home — there’s no need to return to First Presbyterian. For more information, contact Joanne Carey at (404) 4357844 or [email protected]. E MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT: THURSDAY FOOD DISTRIBUTION very Thursday morning, a line forms along Sacred Heart Way, waiting for the Thursday Food Distribution to begin. Each week, Sacred Heart provides a sack lunch and coffee or water (depending on the season) to about 160 people, some of whom are homeless and some of whom simply need assistance. The sack lunch consists of a sandwich, chips, and cookies. The food distribution has been going on every Thursday morning for at least five years, and since it is weekday work, many Sacred Heart parishioners may not be aware of what the process entails. building, will participate, but for the most part, these teams are made up of Sacred Heart parishioners. Typically one person will assemble the sacks while the others will make the sandwiches, which consist of bread, meat, and cheese, and are refrigerated separately. It takes about an hour to an hour and a half to prepare 160 sandwiches, sacks, and to clean up. The distribution takes place on Thursday morning with volunteers helping distribute the lunches made. One hundred and sixty sandwiches are made each week, but occasionally fewer people than that will arrive. In that situation, some of the recipients might get two sandwiches. The work begins with a volunteer (usually the same volunteer, but sometimes others have to fill in) making a supply run to Sam’s Club each week. Then on Wednesdays, teams of at least four volunteers meet to make sandwiches and assemble the sacks. One team meets at 12:30pm on the third Wednesday of the month. The preparation takes place at 8:00am for all the other weeks. Occasionally school groups, or as in one case a group from a nearby office This ministry is one of the ministries funded through the monthly purple “Ministry” envelopes at Sacred Heart. This ministry is evidence of how contributions made through those envelopes are used to serve people in need in our own back yard. The group will be led by Life After Loss co-chairs Linda Kelley and Judy Book, and it will be based on a workbook which has been used by many other parishes, hospitals, and counseling centers. It is geared to help move beyond pain and grief to healing and acceptance of the passing of loved family members and friends. The support group will meet on Saturday afternoons from 4:00 – 5:15 from January 24th through March 14th in the Conference Room. The registration fee is $10.00, which will cover the cost of the workbook. Please make checks payable to “Linda Kelley,” and place in an envelope. Checks may be left at Sacred Heart if clearly marked for Life After Loss. Please contact Linda at 404-663-6537 or [email protected] if you have questions. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
