MISSION: On The Move MISIÓN: En Movimiento
Have you seen the Chicago Magazine this Month? The
cover article is about our Catholic church and is entitled;
“CATHOLICS AT THE CROSSROADS: Why is Chicago
Losing its Catholics?” I suppose the data in this ten page
article is trying to shock people and present something new
as Archbishop Cupich begins his service in the
Archdiocese. But the data presented speaks of the
complicated and challenging church that we are. With all of
our traditions and customs, with all of our buildings and
establishments, with all of our beliefs and study we are a
major community of faith in this part of the world. We also
are a very modern mix of faithfulness and brokenness.
The new Archbishop of Chicago, Archbishop Cupich as
well as the new Bishop of Gary, Bishop Hying, are
enthused as they bring us their leadership. Their energy,
vision and personal style will be absorbed by the ongoing
mission of the Church. They are called to guide us to be
faithful as we share the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus
Christ. We need to resolve so many problems so that our
lives and our shared life as a community of faith can be
clear, solid witnesses to Christ’s Kingdom. This is a time to
revitalize our mission and Church life.
Archbishop Cupich will visit our area next week and
celebrate mass at St. Jude. All are welcome. As he gets to
know us I hope that we can have helpful discussions about
our church life in Calumet City and this region. At some
point the concerns about our mission as a church in the
Calumet region need to include him and the larger church.
This coming Tuesday our TRANSFORMATION TEAM
will present the MISSION NARRATIVE AND ACTION
PLAN from our parish in a meeting with Bishop Perry.
Then we face a new challenge of taking ownership of new
directions in our church. Please continue to pray for this
team and their efforts together with our neighbors at Our
Lady of Knock.
In an interview segment in the Chicago magazine article
Archbishop Cupich said, “We have to be about mission.”

us all to do just that! More to

es acerca de nuestra iglesia católica y tiene como título: "LOS
CATÓLICOS EN LA ENCRUCIJADA: ¿Por qué está
perdiendo Chicago sus católicos?" Supongo que los datos de
este artículo de diez páginas está tratando de impresionar a la
gente y presentar algo nuevo al tiempo que el arzobispo
Cupich comienza su servicio en la Arquidiócesis. Sin

iglesia en Calumet City y esta región. En algún momento las
preocupaciones acerca de nuestra misión como iglesia en la

February 14th-15th, the Parish Pastoral
Council will again host a ministry
(recruitment) fair. Come down to the church
hall to meet and talk with representatives of
the various groups and organizations of the
parish. Have a bit of refreshment, some good
conversation, and a chance at a $25 gift
card.
There are many active and worthwhile things
going on at St. Victor and we’d like you to
become involved, or more involved if you are
already active.
We hope you will consider and stop down
after one of the masses on February 14th15th.

Are you considering “getting involved” in the New Year?
Why not join an organization that helps to make a
difference in the lives of young children? If you value
Catholic education, think about becoming a member of
the Board of Specified Jurisdiction at Christ Our Savior
Catholic School. Since COS is our six parish school, your
input is important and valued. We would relish the
opportunity to welcome more parishioners of the six
founding parishes for membership to our Board.
Christ Our Savior Catholic School is under the
jurisdiction of the ecclesiastical authority of the
Archdiocese of Chicago and is governed by a Board of
Specified Jurisdiction and is subject to Archdiocesan
policies, procedures, guidelines, regulations and best
practices. The reserved powers of the Archdiocese
include the approval of the philosophy and mission
statements for the school, establishment of the board of
specified jurisdiction, appointment of board members,
approval of by-laws for the board, approval for all capital
improvements, additions and structural changes, approval
for all borrowings, approval and ratification of annual
operating budgets, approval of legal counsel and approval
to initiate or defend litigation, approval of auditing
counsel, oversight to ensure no alienation of Church
property and appointment of the Principal, who is the
chief executive officer of the school.
The board is responsible for strategic planning and in the
planning and administration of academic affairs, student
affairs, faith community affairs, business affairs and
development affairs and is also the evaluation of the
effectiveness of local school policies and plans, the
evaluation of the effectiveness of board operations and
the evaluation of mission effectiveness. The board has
oversight of financial operations and oversight of and
participation in marketing, institutional advancement and
development programs to attract human and financial
resources.
Our current Board of Specified Jurisdiction members are:

Principal; Mike Nylen, Chair; Mary Ellen Quinn,
Secretary; Diana Howard, Louis Krawczyk, Felicia
Horton and Cynthia Thomas.
